Not really foolproof... or fun

This is a movie I rented pure on the back cover and because of thetrailer. The story after all is interesting; a couple of peoplepretending to do heists get caught by reality. With such a plot one takes into account a certain level of disbeliefand far fetched events but this movie however takes the level just abit too far. For example, no time is spent on telling how thecharacters get their extensive knowledge of almost all high tech alarmsand a simple picture is enough for them to crack any system.Furthermore these people.. all very young and only one of them seems tohave a job have all the latest gadgets available to them... 007 wouldenvy their setup.Even if one takes this as part of the popcorn this movie is - which Ididn't- there are more disturbing factors.Like the female lead who is about as convincing as Halle Berry inCatwoman with her "I am gonna kick his ass" attitude. For pure torturerewind the first time she confronts the body guard of the bad guy..this is so painfully bad it hurts. The bad guy never got caught - atleast so is told to us- for someone who never got caught he acts stupidthe whole movie , some guys must have a lot of luck. No wonder DavidSuchet looks embarrassed the whole movie. The "climax" itself has a nice idea behind it - story of this movie, lots of nice ideas- but the execution makes you shake your head indisbelief. The few twists that are behind it make entrapment amasterpiece.Actually this whole movie feels like an under budget TV pilot. If thisis the best Canada has to offer mainstream nowadays I even start tothink about re-watching 21 jump street. This film is even lower as the nobrainer it is made to be, it doesn'tshow any respect for its audience and takes itself far too serious. Ifyou have anything better to do with your life.. watching paint dry..clip your toenails please do it and avoid this stinker.

A good Canadian movie!

Being Canadian I am extremely embarrassed by most Canadian movies andwas cringing when this one started. What you get instead is a tight, well written and reasonably well acted(Ryan Reynolds... NOT) heist movie, as a group of three friends whodevise intricate robbery plans for a hobby are suddenly force-recruitedby the criminal elite of Toronto (don't laugh - we got mafia too) topull off their latest crime scenario for real.Naturally, with the intelligence in the group you know they will turnthe tables, but the fun is trying to figure out how they do it, whichthe movie does a reasonable job of keeping hidden until the end. There are some predictable gaffs along the way, like the excruciatinglylong time they take to get under some security lasers when they havealready shown they are skilled enough to have just turned them off, andthe fact that if your going to fake your own death, you really need toknow ahead of time how the bad guy is going to do it so you can planit! How exactly did they know he was going to drop the elevator onthem? He wouldn't have told Rob ahead of time as he might tell them! All in all very well written, look for some great acting from KristinBooth as the super sexy ninja-girl and William House as the sinistermobster crime boss trapping them in the plan.Do NOT watch Ryan Reynolds, this guy should go back to modelling.

Foolproof isn't quite foolproof ... but close.

I thought this Canadian movie was pretty well made. I love heist movies or films where they use really cool, high-tech ways of breaking into safes and other things... so this one was right up my alley. I can't say I was disappointed. The movie starts out with a group of three people who, for fun only, plan how to break into places and safes ... making their plans "foolproof" so that they are able to go off without a hitch (it's just a game to them). They never carry out their plans though ... until a set of their plans is stolen. Then a mob-like guy contacts them and makes them break into a safe for him. I don't want to give too much away because it has good twists and turns in it. But if you are looking for an entertaining, exciting, funny, interesting movie, definitely give this one a try. Ryan Renolds is a great actor - he made the movie better just by being it. The supporting cast was pretty good as well. It wasn't an award winning movie or anything, but for a night at home watching a decent movie... it's perfect. Also, check out the extras on the DVD. As stated in the Trivia section on IMDB, an interesting tidbit: The movie was not only the widest release of a Canadian movie in history (as of October 2003), but had a record-breaking marketing budget of $2 million.

Excellent B movie

Recently, I have seen this film, which is great combination of actionand crime. Much better than Oceans 11 and 12...This movie also has one of the best actors working today. Yea, RyanReynolds, who also did a great performance on this one too. this filmshowed he could play in action stories, with his humor always presentedin a right direction. The most valuable thing in this movie is it's plot. Kevin,Sam and Robare three smart, young thieves and they have plan how to steal somediamonds from a high security building. But, much experienced criminal,Leo, steals it first with the assist of Kevin planes and blackmailsthem...The twist is really fantastic, when it turns out that Rob is ontheir side, after all...Highly recommendable, for all you good action kind a people.

foolproof

Good movie, very entertaining, it feels like oceans 11 but with a different cast and smaller budget. Ryan Reynolds and cast pulled it off nicely

surprisingly good for a movie i've never heard of

I decided to watch this because it was free, and it had Ryan Reynolds in it. I was bored on a hungover Saturday afternoon and figured if I fell asleep, so what. I was surprised to find myself totally into the movie and surprised at the end. I recommended it to others as well. Not to shabby for an unknown title.

NOT SO GOOD

Too predictable -- just think as a screenwriter composing a product for pre-pubescent teenagers who groove an geeky hi-tech explanations but haven't a clue about plot development and you'll understand how flawed this otherwise good film really is.The first indication is Sam's initial missed opportunity to off Leo the Touch -- had he been done in, the script would have had the chance to become a great caper, but, alas...

Yeah

This was a pleasant surprise. Great for a movie that i've never heard of. I don't want to give anything away so i'll just say...it's not what you think it is.

Entertaining movie, cleaver, funny

Turn off the brain, kick back and relax, and let this movie pull you through it. The focus of the story is on 3 college friends who started a hobby of studying a place to break into, and then making a "foolproof" plan to do it, but then never do. The scams are elaborate, thourough, and darn near perfect. They have done it 100's of times, but this last plan gets busted...by a professional thief. The plot to break into a jewelry wholesale is stolen from the group of three, then used to actually do the robbery. Then the mobster who stole the plan uses it as blackmail to get them to plan out another, even more elaborate scheme to steel 40 million in bonds, with the threat to turn them in for the Jewels. Ryan Reynolds does not streach in anyway in his acting, and plays the smart, whitty, full of one liners person that he always does. Kristin Booth and Joris Jarsky also make good fits for the other two college buddies, and balance each others characters ot well. This movie is just a fun little movie. If you like action, thrills, and small twists, this this is right up your ally.

nearly foolproof

I have no problems admitting I enjoy this type of movie. I just love tosee heists being well planned and executed. And Foolproof does notdisappoint. Sure, there are a few minor quibbles and a couple ofloopholes, but the pacing is fast enough to not give them a secondthought. If you enjoyed Foolproof, there is a couple of recent movies I wouldheartily recommend. Firstly, Confidence - even slicker, even moreelaborate planning and a better cast (Dustin Hoffmann especially in amemorable role). And secondly, Matchstick Men. This one does take aslightly different approach, with Nicholas Cage playing a very paranoidcon-artist. Only when you get to the end - as per usual - you willrealize that not all is what it appeared to be.

predictable and boring

I wasted my money renting this dud. Story was boring and acting was dull. I didn't care about any of it, never engaged me.

Not Quite Foolproof

After seeing the movie on cable, I can't understand why anyone would ever buy it. The review with 1 star is a bit harsh but very accurate (hence my "2"). The movie is fun-ish but the story itself has more holes than a screen door. It held my attention for about the first 15-20 minutes then I watched the rest as I was folding laundry. I WAS FOLDING LAUNDRY DURING THIS MOVIE! I don't know how else to warn you. It's not horrible, mind you. It is simply way far behind in plot, direction, and to some degree- acting. Everyone mailed it in. The experience was similar to watching a bug zapper at night; there's something almost always happening, but nothing to really watch.

"Fool" is Right

After "The Perfect Score," "Catch That Kid" and now "Foolproof," itwould appear that the heist film genre is in dire need of either ablood transfusion or, at the very least, some serious mouth-to-mouthresuscitation. "Foolproof" features three former hacker buddies - twomale and one female, of course - who have taken up a most unusualhobby: they meticulously devise, plan out and rehearse elaborateburglary schemes that they have no intention of ever carrying out. Evenbefore we have had a chance to buy into that ridiculous premise, themovie goes a step further into narrative idiocy. For what our intrepidlittle band of reformed lawbreakers doesn't count on is that one day adiabolical criminal will steal one of their plans, then blackmail thethree of them into executing the heist for real. Thus, what starts offas an intellectually challenging game for bored computer geeks turnsinto deadly serious business."Foolproof" might have been a halfway interesting film had anybodyinvolved with the project put even the slightest conviction or effortinto it. As it is, the script is juvenile, the direction shoddy, theacting stiff and without emotion. It feels as if everyone on both sidesof the camera had been simply passing through the studio that day anddecided to get together and toss off this flick on their way to betterthings. The movie is so utterly slapdash in appearance and style and soutterly devoid of meaning and purpose that one wonders why any studiowould ever even have bothered to release it.Is there really much point in watching a caper film about a trio ofPollyana-ish "criminals" who spend all their time tsk-tsking thoseinvolved in committing an actual crime? We in the audience are smartenough to know right from wrong even when we're watching a heist filmand don't need a bunch of can't-get-with-the-program moralists spoilingall the fun for us."Foolproof" lives up to only the first half of its compound word title.

Kept my interest throughout the movie

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. Because I'm a prime member, I've been watching movies that are free for prime members and this is one of them. The previous movies I've watched were rated 4 stars or higher and up to now, I've been disappointed. However this one was actually pretty good. Like I said in the title, it kept my interest. Nothing heavy or intense, just a light thriller. Features a younger Ryan Reynolds. Rated R for language.

A bit on the predictable side .. but entertaining ..

The most appealing part of the movie (unlike) other heist movies, is the characters are not professional crooks, but just simulate their plans to perfection (a.k.a) foolproof .. That leads the movie into a bit of a grey area, where there is apparently no intention to commit the crime, but yet the method and plan is perfected. Interesting!!The plot however unwinds as it goes on, and starts becoming a bit predictable. But good performances delivered all around.Would recommend for a one time watch.

Great movie

I really enjoyed this movie. It was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Not a lot of foul language which was great for a change.

I liked it (:D)

I thought it would have been cheesey but it was better than expected it kind of had an alomost ocean eleven feel to it. Don't think it should have gotten a 2 or 2 1/2 stars from some reviewsers..I like Ryan's sense of humor great guy...

Great Little Caper Film!

I had never heard of this Canadian film before, but had seen Ryan Reynolds in "Blade Trinity" recently as well as in "Van Wilder" and, having enjoyed his performances, quickly hunted down a few more of his lessor known films. And I am very glad I did because this film is a real hidden gem! If you enjoy heist/caper films, you will definitely enjoy this. It's not prefect (in fact, it may be just a bit predictable to the most experienced film-watchers) but this is a very slick, beautifully produced, skillfully directed, smartly written movie and is still a lot of fun to watch. Great acting here as well. Reynolds again was terrific in the lead. He is fast becoming one of my favorite actors and is the man to watch in the future. David Suchet is awesome as well as the suave villain. Alternating nicely between suspense, comedy and even a few breathless action sequences, this film is one the most enjoyable surprises I've seen in a long time. Definitely a keeper. An important note to DVD buyers however: There are TWO versions/editions of this film available! One is a single-disc edition distributed by DEJ in the US (the one sold here on Amazon). It is in FULLSCREEN only and is lacking in some of the special features. The other edition is a 2-disc edition distributed in Canada by Alliance-Atlantis. This one is in WIDESCREEN, has more special features (a featurette on the special efffects for example) and has the second disc (a CD) consisting of the complete soundtrack music to the film. The cover art of this Canadian edition is different as well, showing Reynolds, Suchet and Kristen Booth standing in front of a glowing blue vault. Just some info I thought anyone should know if they are thinking about buying the film.
