Juli Baker devoutly believes in three things the sanctity of trees (especially her beloved sycamore), the wholesomeness of the eggs she collects from her backyard flock of chickens, and that someday she will kiss Bryce Loski. Ever since she saw Bryces baby blues back in second grade, Juli has been smitten. Unfortunately, Bryce has never felt the same. Frankly, he thinks Juli Baker is a little weird--after all, what kind of freak raises chickens and sits in trees for fun? Then, in eighth grade, everything changes. Bryce begins to see that Julis unusual interests and pride in her family are, well, kind of cool. And Juli starts to think that maybe Bryces brilliant blue eyes are as empty as the rest of Bryce seems to be. After all, what kind of jerk doesnt care about other peoples feelings about chickens and trees? With Flipped, mystery author Wendelin Van Draanen has taken a break from her Sammy Keyes series...
You won't find two better youthful actors directed by a comic genius in any other film this summer.
At times, the movie feels like a commercial for Wonder Bread, stretched to feature length.
Coming-of-age romance brings light touch to heavy themes.
Flipped offers an achingly familiar look at puppy love from two contrasting angles, each of them insufferably saccharine.
Though the dialogue rings too chirpy ("Gee whiz!") and faintly anachronistic ("Get over it, man!"), the acting is wonderfully subtle...
I didn't know anything about this book or movie when it appeared at mylocal cineplex, but some quick research showed me there were somequality people associated with it -- Aiden Quinn, John Mahoney, AnthonyEdwards and, most especially, Rob Reiner. Reiner has made some of myfavorite movies of all time and shown, perhaps, more diversity than anyother director working today (could you get more different than This isSpinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, and WhenHarry Met Sally?). At his best, his films are a home run, and even hisworst films were solid base hits, but I guess everyone has to strikeout once in a while. As I watched this story unfold in a very straight forward, obvious anduninteresting way, I struck by the uniformly poor acting from everyone(with the possible exception of Mahoney). Then it dawned on me -- it'snot the acting, it's the characters. Each was a simple stereotype andbarely even 2 dimensional. The actors were doing exactly what was beingasked of them and the only fault I can really find with them is theirpoor choice in choosing this project in the first place. And the worstpart of it is that the story itself was not that bad. It was justpoorly executed.I have not given up on Rob Reiner as filmmaker. He has given mehundreds of hours of enjoyment over the years. So I'm just going to tryto put this clunker he phoned in out of my mind and will go back andwatch The American President for the 20th time.
It's great to see Rob Reiner make a film that is every inch as warm and human and enjoyable as the films he made his name with in the early part of his career.
This review is from: Flipped (DVD) This is a sweet movie. It will definitely appeal to the younger teenage set. The relationship in the movie is cute, and I like that the characters change and grow for the better. I wish there was a little less foul language, though.
I went into this with a lot of hesitation and was amazed at the execution and flow of this film. It should have received much higher review but I can see people sitting in it with judgment blinders. Here is my view: First off what was done that I rarely see is how the movie tells it's story from two perspectives. Not simultaneously, but they tell a section of the story from the perspective of the boy, then gracefully back track and the story then is seen from the perspective of the young girl. It really is a seamless transition. It's like giving you a secret view into the another's life and mind. Beautifully done, as I've seen other films try this but they did not have the same flow and pull as this. This is not quite love-story and in no way is this sappy (blinders). This is a self-realization movie that cause everyone particularly the girl to really reexamine why she/we like people--are people beyond or below the measure of their parts. Just to briefly talk about the story:- A young boy is constantly annoyed by his neighbor who has a very strong crush on him. He can't see her value and she doesn't realize to much later that she i over-valuing him. The boys grandfather recognizes the girls inner strength and befriends her. She eventually come to a beautiful peace and lets him go internally and he has"Flipped". Meaning he finally see's just how strong and real this girl really is. Love this movie for it is not shallow but yet it is fun to watch!
This review is from: Flipped [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) We ALL LOVE IT!We love the dialogue, the perspective from both sides, male, female and the issues covered. A great family movie. We watched it three times and we even bought the book. You'll Love it. Rob Reiner does great family movies like this, i.e. Princess Bride.
A somewhat leaden piece of work, its considerable charms nearly smothered by strange pacing and awkward staging.
I forgot how I ended up finding this movie, I had assumed it was likeany other romantic movie, Flipped however is so much sweeter and withmore individual and original characters, each with their own uniquepersonality and individual quirks. The way the film is structure andnarrated from each protagonist makes it even more heartwarming. It isunexpectedly different, original even, in comparison to theregurgitated romantic comedy movies that have no depth. It is a moviefor all ages as Flipped explores each family member and I assure you,you can definitely relate to one of them in someway and feelcomfortable and warm watching this movie. I fell in love with the cast, each actor took their role seriously and fitted in their rolesperfectly. It has its funny moments, cute, heart-throbbing and sadmoments; it's Truly Wonderful, Original and sweet. A Great familymovie. With an original storyline and a lovely portrayal of onefamily's bonds.
This is a coming of age film set initially and briefly in the late1950s and mostly in the early 1960s. The boy, Bryce, is chased by hisneighbor girl, Juli. And is he chased! Juli is immediately smitten or"flipped" by Bryce's eyes and the story unfolds. What is unusual about the story telling is that each major event isplayed back twice - once through the eyes and voice of Bryce and oncethrough the eyes and voice of Juli. It's the same scene, but youwouldn't know that from their differing viewpoints.Juli is the adventurous and interesting one. Bryce just wants to fit inat their Junior High School. Juli slowly begins to unlike Bryce andBryce slowly begins to appreciate Juli. Will they ever meet at the sameemotional place at the same time? That is the drama and story. The art direction and era are right on. It is the Eisenhower andKennedy years in look, and even in feel. The wives are subordinate tothe husbands. The children are mostly respectful to their parents. Andthe teachers teach and the students learn. But, you can see the seedsbeing laid for the rebellious war babies of the late 1960s.Rob Reiner is a talented director for romances - "When Harry MetSally." And he is a talented director for handling young actors -"Stand By Me." He combines these talents to help us understand thebetter part of the human condition; that is, love, respect, sacrifice, forgiveness, and honor. And we have fun and laugh along the way. Thisis like the TV program, "Wonder Years" - but heightened and deepened.-Bob, a Heartland Truly Moving Picture Award Jury Member
Maybe what makes Flipped such a warm entertainment is how it re-creates a life we wish we'd had when we were 14.
The movie feels static, like a diorama of ?60s life rather than a living, breathing story.

Wow. Rob Reiner has directed so many terrific movies (The PrincessBride, When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me, The Bucket List ...) that myhopes were high for this one - but what a letdown. The plot is cheaply melodramatic, and the acting (despite a strong"name" cast) is shallow and uninteresting, The usually excellentAnthony Edwards does a paint-by-numbers portrayal of an angry dad. OnlyJohn Mahoney, who played the dad on "Frasier," is worth watching froman acting standpoint. The story is painted in such broad and simplified strokes (by both thescreenwriters and the actors) that I can only conclude this movie wasintended for young teenagers. I wish that had been mentioned in thepromotional blurb, so my wife and I wouldn't have wasted an hour and ahalf watching it (she feels the same way). We kept thinking that the"good" parts of the movie must be coming later ... but they neverarrived. If you are older than about 13, I strongly recommend you steer clear ofthis piece of claptrap.
The last good movie Rob Reiner directed was "Misery" in 1990, nearly 20years ago. Since then he's been pumping out a lot of crap like "TheAmerican President" and "The Bucket List". Flipped falls into the samecategory. It's a movie about a suburban, middle-class white Americankid who comes of age. To top it all off, I discovered that Flipped isbased on a book which takes place in the 2000s. You've seen this movieif you've seen 'My Girl' or 'The Wonder Years' you've already seen thismovie.American Graffiti and Hairspray are at least more challenging and addsomething new. 'Flipped' adds nothing new except for a dual-narrativefrom both the teen boy and teen girl. This is interesting but since themale character is so utterly devoid of any charisma I couldn't standlistening to him. Reiner got it right with 'Stand By Me' by using anadult narrator (Dreyfuss) who could actually handle the task. The youngactors are pretty bad narrators. There's nothing new here and it's pretty much an all-white cast. Thisis not a time to be sentimental about with it's lack of diversity andsterile environments. Reiner had the option of having the film takeplace in the 2000s and obviously rejected it. He prefers to work in thecocoon which is the 1960s coming of age story.
First of all, I was sure I'd enjoy this when I watched the trailer, butfeel free to watch it before you watch the film as you might get adifferent vibe from it than I did. The film itself is a coming of age story set in America in the 50's,following the story of two young teens as they mature and age. This isjust a very brief outline of the film itself, but overall the filmincludes comedy, romance, drama at points, and really just a heart feltstory. It was thoroughly enjoyable to watch and leaves you feelinghappy! It's also easily relatable as we've all lived through thoseyears of having to grow up and mature and it's also interesting as thefilm looks at the female and male perspective of a situation, which isfunny when comparing them. Anyway, I'm blabbering, but this film isWELL worth watching, it's a good family film and can be watched betweenfriends! It deserves more praise! Hope I helped!
This review is from: Flipped (Amazon Instant Video) It was nice to watch a heartwarming movie with my teenagers children. We all loved it. It reminded me of Anne of Green Gables.
