Let me first start off by saying this movie kept true to the words ofthe bible and kept the sabbath day holy, as this movies plot wasriddled with them. If you wondering why I have "HA." as my summarytitle that is because at the time i read that they called this movie acomedy under genre. This movie has about as much comedy as Roots (andno I did not find Roots remotely funny). So first let me start with theplot. This story is completely messed up. First off lets start withsomething i noticed off the bat while watching the movie. A man in themovie (spoilers) is blind and cleans the church at nights. This doesn'tbother as much as the point that in one part of the movie he is able towalk by a gun within mere inches of his face and not notice it, yetlater in the movie is able to find a bag of money which no one elsecan. Another thing in the movie that i only realized happenedafterwards was that two characters were completely missing for half themovie. In one scene there is the character of a woman in a greenishshirt with black dots on her shirt played by comedian Rickey Smiley whois a man. Her character another character who is sitting next to her ina church meeting they are having, completely disappear within minutes.The director didn't even bother to show where they had gone. Anotherthing that i hated about this movie was the acting. Ice Cubesperformance rivals Clitista Flockhart's performance when she stared inAlly McFeal. Not only were his drama scenes unconvincing, they were thefunniest parts of this movie (not really a good thing). Another thingthat bothered me was Tracy Morgan and Katt Williams. They are put inthe movie for comedic relief and do not deliver. They act in this movieexactly the same way the acted in previous movies they were in such asWho's your Caddy? or Gone with the Wind. By now i hope you noticed thati hated this movie. The acting ability is equal to that of someone in aelementary school play, the plot has more holes than a pasta drainer,and the jokes aren't present. Im just hoping they called this movieFirst Sunday for some other reason than to open the possibilities for aSecond Sunday. I would recommend this movie to no one unless you are aamateur in the movie industry, whether it be a director, actor, or evenproducer, and want to know what not to do. In that case this is a goodmovie to watch as i shows how not to act nor how to direct a movie. Ifyou aren't one of mentioned people, Stay Away!!!.

Turned out to actually be a very good movie

This movie truly exceeded my original expectations.Okay, maybe not "exceeded", but it certainly wasn't as terrible as Ithought it was going to be, although close.I had rented this movie a couple of weeks ago, along with several otherfilms, and never hearing about or any mention of it I thought it wasgoing to be one of those lame, cheesy movies.After watching it, however, I was proved wrong.The first half of the movie seemed somewhat difficult to laugh through,and contained a lot of badly-played-through jokes, but the second halfcompletely redeemed it, in a way. I was consistently cracking up overand over. Ice Box and Tracy Morgan acted well all the way through, butI must say, Katt Williams' performance was absolutely, comp-uhletelyastounding. I would watch the movie over and over just because he's init.Overall, this odd dramedy of an awkward story happens to be a casual,fun, and even compelling movie that I would definitely request for youto see in your spare time.

Entertaining

It was supposed to be entertaining. I doubt Ice Cube is crossing allfingers and toes that he'll get an Oscar nod. Lighten up! Big deal.Not every movie has to be a groundbreaking blockbuster hit. Theinspirational messages (considered silly by some) might hit certainpeople that didn't anticipate getting a message from the movie. Momma Ttalking to Ice Cube at the end was a great message and the teens thatmight see this movie need to hear it. Lots of teens will see this movie I'm sure and they will walk away witha positive message, who knows. If you saw this movie and weredisappointed in it, you must have had sky high hopes and it was CLEARAS DAY what the movie was going to be like in the commercials. If youthink you wasted your time, you need to pay more attention tocommercials before going out to the theater. Come on man!But to me, Katt Williams made it worth while, he never fails me.

My Review

"First Sunday" is a film about two down-and-out gentlemen living in thehoods of Baltimore. They've been to court several times, and the one isabout to lose his son because he can't provide alimony for him.Then they come up with a totally hair-brained scheme...rob a church. Sothey do, but in the process they discover that someone else alreadyrobbed it, so they hold the congregation hostage until someoneconfesses to the crime.The humor in the film is lacking, but the heart is clearly visible. Youfeel for these criminals, and as their hostage standoff prolongs, theybegin to realize what type of people they really are, and learn avaluable lesson in forgiveness."First Sunday" is a good, heartfelt comedy that delivers the laughs andthe compassion.

A Comedy Movie That Became Serious

Reynaldo Rey had the first line in this movie. You can't lose in amovie with fly Regina Hall and fly Melinda Williams. We all should haveknown that Michael Beach's character, the deacon stole some of themoney from the church. This movie was zany and hilarious. Until someserious plots started to happen. The little boy who was with LorettaDevine's character said he was waiting for his mother who left him tocome back. And Tracy Morgan's character never had a birthday partybecause the foster home lost his birth certificate. Plus Ice Cuberobbing a church so his baby's mother wouldn't take his son to Atlanta.Olivia Cole from Roots acted for the first time this millennium in thismovie!

I didn't see what was horrible about it, but it's certainly not that good

Let me start off with the downsides of this movie. There was a lot ofunbelievable material, and it got so out of hand at times that I reallycouldn't enjoy it for how ridiculous it was being. Some of the actingwas poor, and I felt the actors and actresses really didn't care howthey portrayed their characters, except maybe a few, and therefore theyended up being unlikable and ultimately forgettable. Most of the funnymaterial wasn't funny at all, and I got super tired super fast with allof the lame jokes and mundane, black comedy antics. Not to mention itwas predictable to the point where I wasn't enjoying any surprises.Now, the actual upsides. I did laugh a few times, and it was becausethe material was actually humorous. No, it wasn't hysterically rollingon the floor laughing, but it got smiles and chuckles nonetheless. Itmanaged to keep me entertained, and I was actually sucked into thestory plot a little. I became interested because even though most everyattribute about this film is average or poor, the plot truthfullyseemed endearing to me, for some odd reason, and overall, while themovie is mediocre, and I certainly wouldn't watch it again, it's notterrible. I wouldn't recommend it, but you don't have to completelyavoid it, per say. It was nothing special, but if you feel likewatching it, be my guest.

LOVE IT!

I think people who didn't like this movie are missing it. Yeah, because of the cast we are expecting the same raunchy humor from them. But I loved this character for Tracy Morgan. I have never seen him cry in a movie before! I am coming from a Christian point of view too: I like how they wanted the church planted in the ghetto and how they showed unconditional love and forgiveness towards those who don't deserve it; none of us do. The Lord shines brightest in the darkest places! That's just my opinion. :) I loved it.

One of the funniest movies I have seen in years

First Sunday was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It willhave you laughing throughout the whole movie. It also had some greatmeaning and a great message as well. The acting was very good as well.I think that Tracy Morgan is the funniest actor out in movies today. Ithought that the story of them robbing a church though was not a goodmessage and not thought through that well. After they tried robbing thechurch though at the end the movie taught you a great message. I thinkthat all ages can also love this movie. Some of the funny parts in thismovie almost made me fall on the floor laughing. I don't think I havescene to many movie that were as funny as this movie. All and all thismovie was great. It was sad, funny and had a great message to it aboutGOD always giving you a second chance in life. That is true to that GODdoes give everyone a second chance. I don't think that this movie wasall about GOD either it was mostly a comedy. It was very funny atseveral different scenes. I think Tracy Morgan is very funny. I dounderstand why people don't like this movie. Most people will probablythink that it was stupid. Some will think why in the world would youmake a story about two people robing a church. In my opinion it wasgood they made a movie like this. It was very original if you ask me.Well anyways just see this movie and see what you think. It's not asbad as people make it sound.

Uneven but worth a watch

I'm baffled by the anger in some reviewer's critiques. Sure, this movieis hardy Citizen Kane or even up to the level of the Barbershop movies,but it's not terrible. It's main issue is its inability to sustain atone. Instead, it varies between pathos, light comedy and (of allthings) hostage drama.As with the Barbershop movies, the persistent theme is community andfamily. The central characters are two petty criminals who remaincriminals because of previous convictions. This isn't a laughabletheme. A felon has a very difficult time making a living. When's thelast time you saw a job application which didn't ask about previouscriminal record? Anyway, in an effort to both pay off scary people andmaintain family cohesiveness, two of society's losers decide on onemore crime.The subsequent series of events combine serious situations withinteresting characterizations and then throws in some scenes of suchsilliness that they tend to stomp a bit on the rest of the movie.Approach with an open mind and you'll be for a light, decent movie withsome interesting character sketches.

Will get you laughing

This review is from: First Sunday [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Oddly enough the 2 stars,Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan had their moments but Katt Wiliiams had me laughing with every word that came out of his mouth.I enjoyed the movie but it was a comedy with a serious tone as far as Ice Cubes child in the movie.The comedy itself as I said was mainly from Katt Williams whereas Ice and Tracy just seemed to set up a joke for Katt to do his thing.Its worth a watch maybe not a purchase although I am glad to have it in my collection.

Shamelessly deeding stereotypes on screen!

With scenes pumping off like in a TV show, this film exposes an urbancommunity with an appeal that's worst off than the dirty red-lightdistricts in some cities. The film blares with loud music that seemingcompetes with noise from the loud-mouthed characters. TheWriter/Director brings out a Baltimore community, inhabited by eitherdysfunctional characters or low-based folks – gangsters, masseurs,street alcoholics, homeless folks, macho men who can't resist glaringat female bottoms, and those who fill their time in an overheatedchurch where the choir director maneuvers around like a court jesterand any one dressed like a manicured, fruity dude could be troublesome!Even the court room has the appeal of a noisy street market! Hhhmh,what a pathetic way to portray a community… especially when it's soabsurd to see Ice Cube's Durell – a man obviously with brains andtalent – so easily becoming enticed to crime by his dysfunctional pal,LeeJohn, or having nothing better to do than be obsessed by a female'swriggling rear end.Boy, aren't we getting rather bored with film after film that makesexcuses for irresponsible bums who turn into gun-trotting robbers justbecause they are short of cash or are being hounded by ugly loansharks? Boy, it's even more freakish to have to watch misfits turningover a new leaf by some lonely old church ladies with ogling eyes!Absolutely a lame movie without any witty humor, but with lots ofunflattering stereotypical clichés to attempt at drawing out laughs…and where events and characters flow and end at very predictableexpectations. Yep, this film is simply overloaded withnon-complimentary logic and ugly characterization of an urbancommunity!

You will not stop laughing

I knew that the movie had to be great cause Ice Cube was in it and I liked his movies. Until I saw "First Sunday" I had no idea who Katt Williams or Tracy Morgan are (Unbelievable) But now after watching it I know that Ice Cube, Katt Williams, and Tracy Morgan make a perfect trio and they should make more movies together. You will not stop laughing, promise. But this is just my opinion so watch it. "First Sunday" is worth every penny!

Entertaining, Not Award Winning

I really enjoyed this film for a number of reasons. I think KattWilliams is hilarious all by himself and was a great person to cast aschoir director. I thought the plot was not as generic as mosttheft-based plots that hit Hollywood. I thought the transitions thathappened as the film developed were fun to watch. Overall I thought themovie was really good.If you are trying to decide whether or not you want to go see thismovie, consider this as you make your decision. First, the film isstereotypical. The main characters live in and attend church in a rundown community exposed to crime, drugs, and other stereotypical thingsyou expect to find in a stereotypical community overrun withstereotypical people who are stereotypically Black or Hispanic. Second,the film is funny. Things that are funny to people who understand thecomplexities and realities of being Black will realize this; people whodo not understand will find it challenging to find the comedy. Third,the film will not be an Oscar nominee. The movie was not so well shot,scripted, edited, or presented that you will see it up for majorawards. That being said, a number of movies come out every day that areentertaining but are not award-winning and we watch them because wewant to be entertained. This is another one of those films. So, if youwant to be entertained, you understand the positive and negative innerworkings of Black society, and you do not mind viewing a film thatdisplays both stereotypes and truths about the way Black people live,move, and have their being, this movie is for you.

LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY!!!! A MUST SEE!!!

The Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan pairing reminded me of the comedy days of Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, and Sydney Poitier. I highly recommend it. It also had a great message about single fathers. David E. Talbert hit a home run in my book.

Katt Williams...need I say any more?

So the movie wasn't perfectly solid and not completely believable either, but it definitely did its job as a knockout comedy with a serious, positive message.Ice Cube is not the greatest actor at all, and Tracy Morgan quickly becomes annoying, irritating, and repetitive. However, the several other Church members were outstanding actors/actresses, especially Katt Williams, who surely delivered the best and biggest laughs of the whole movie. Some of the one liners had the entire theater rolling.There are some slow parts to the movie, but it was surely worth the money, which surprised me. I was just going because some friends wanted to see it, but I loved it, at least as a good, black, family comedy.
