Fear

On the surface, the Walkers were a picture perfect family. Steve had a great job as an architect and a beautiful house in Seattle overlooking a lake. His new wife, Laura, loved him very much. Toby, her young son, looked up to him like his own father. And Nicole, his 16-year old daughter, meant the world to him. As Steve would be the first to admit, it was almost the perfect life. Until one day when Nicole went to a party at a local rave club with her best friend Margo and met a young man named David.

LIked it

I liked this movie because it was real to life and I thought it reallyshowed how easily it is to get caught up in things. I would show this tomychildren for educational purposes.I liked the way it showed the transitionfrom a great boyfriend to an evil man.

Familiar material enlivened by direction, performances

James Foley's knowing direction and the performances of the principal actorsnearly keep Fear from being just another entry in the Fatal Attraction/HandThat Rocks the Cradle/Single White Female sub-genre of "psycho vs. decentfolk" thrillers. Unfortunately, the inevitable "siege and showdown" styleending that mars each of those films sinks this one as well. The first partof Fear, however, is deliciously sleazy as bad boy Wahlberg insinuateshimself into the lives of Petersen's upper middle class family through naivedaughter Witherspoon. The escalating romance between the young lovers issatisfyingly lurid, and the psychological interplay between father andsuitor makes for some of the flick's finest moments.

Ultimate Mark Wahlberg

Although many have claimed how badly acted and utterly cheesy they think this movie is, it's pure escapist entertainment. If you're going to have an obsessive boyfriend, wouldn't you want it to be someone as hot and magnetic as Mark Wahlberg? Engaging and often suspensful, it will keep you wondering what's going to happen next to a young Reese Witherspoon and a typically trampy Alyssa Milano. After watching this, the Rolling Stone song Wild Horses (performed by the Sundays) will definitely take on new meaning for you.

Best Movie Iv'e Ever Seen

This is the best movie i've ever seen in my life. It is really suspenseful. My friend Stepf and I must watch it every weekend. My favorite actress is Alyssa Milano. She was great in this movie and so were the other actors and actresses. Anyone who says this movie is stupid or that Alyssa is a slut are stupid and crazy. Also Mark Wahlberg is so hot. best soundtrack ever.

A scary and aggressive ride into the world of obsession.

While this movie had mixed opinions from critics, I thought it was thoroughly underrated. I didn't really see what this movie didn't have to please people around the globe. It had a story, and an intriguing one at that, it had a lot of genres to mix its story up in, it had well-developed characters - especially the character of the father - and it had excellent direction, acting and a great script that explores further into the world of terror. The film succeeds highly because of its characters and the original bunch they are. Reese Witherspoon plays the short-skirt wearing, blonde-haired and extremely family-bound and nice young girl that gets involved with a psychopath and doesn't know how to take it. Mark Wahlberg plays this psychopath excellently, his character is someone obsessed with Witherspoon's character and we will go to any great lengths to protect her and assure that his and her relationship is safe. And then he gets violent, very violent, and the outcome is horrifying. The father is not the most original character in the film, but the most developed. He is the caring, brave and extremely clever dad who wants the best for his daughter but doesn't want to hurt her. Anyway, enough about the characters. The rest of the movie rocks too - the script is surprisingly original for its premise, taking the boy-meets-girl, girl-dumps-boy, boy-gets-angry angle to new areas in psychological horror. The suspense scenes are incredibly tense and the movie has some gut-wrenchingly scary but incredibly good ideas. I really enjoyed the director's point of view and liked the way he built his film as each of the characters slowly drifts off. I appreciated this thriller a lot and think it is worth your time, but beware, you're in for a pretty darn scary and atmospheric ride!

Pretty Good

It's your basic boy meets girl, boys insane, boys tries to kill girl, and so on. But I really enjoyed this movie, Reese Witherspoon is a pretty good actor, and Marc Walhberg is a good psychopath. Watch this movie.

Is it possible to hate a movie but love a character?

This movie reminds me of those old fifties flicks like "Curfew Breakers!"and such. The message of this movie is: "Girls, don't get hot and heavywith boys or they will turn into homicidal maniacs who kill littlepuppies!"The Cheese factor is so high in this that even I couldn't stomach it. Atleast until Mark Wahlberg did his flip-out thing. I was impressed with hisacting the whole movie, but when he did his kill everybody routine, I lappedit up. He was excellent. Crazy down to the core. I liked his performance somuch,I watched it again (Fast-forwarding through everything else). This oneis a decent rental, check it out.

Reese was just an idiot...

in this movie, she acted so dumb, and her father was really getting on my nerves. Alyssa Milano really took the cake, playing the friend who sleeps with her friends man. The ending was the worst part of this movie, I found myself being able to predict what was going to happen (she only gave him the alarm code when he snuck in to sleep with her)....the only person who had any sense in this movie was the little brother....

Who's fear?

This review is from: Fear (DVD) The movie seams ok. I just don't see the fear in this movie. The DVD does not have much on it, just the movie. Not much else to say.

my point about the movie "Fear"

when i first heard about this movie i didn't know Mark Wahlberg was in it until i watched it. i was in like total shock, but if you ask me i thoght it was a really good movie but not his best. to me i thought he did really well in three kings and perfect storm. Neways back to Fear i thought it was great and ne 1 that hasn't seen it should. i just had a problem with the end. i'm not going to say nething b/c i dont wanna ruin it for those who havn't seen it but i did not like it. i know i know it wouldn't make sence if it didn't happen and not every movie has to be perfect but i guess its b/c i like him so much i just didn't like it you know, but of course thats my opinion right. well i just wanted to make my point and get this out to every 1 pluse i had nothing else to do. Stunning Story And Acting!

This movie is rated as a B+, but the story and the acting is stunning. The story is suspensful, clever and fun. The acting is believable and great. The direction is absolutely memorable. The visuals are good-looking and perfect for this type of film. Overall, this is recommended.

I know this kid

What makes such an impact here is that it's not that far fetched. My ex-brother-in-law was just like Mark Wahlbergs charactor. He was abusive and manipulitive and downright aggresive, overly protective/controling and jealous beyond no end. That to me is what makes this movie so scary (not really scary but intence)...it's very close to home and very real. This could happen, this does happen because there are people that are really like this. Mark Wahlberg plays the perfect psycho, all sweet on the outside but you can see through it. That was my brother-in-law. You almost wonder why they bother to pretend because it's so obvious you can see through the fasade. Too bad Reese couldn't (then again neither could me sister)...Teenage girls beware...just because he says nice things to you and you lost your virginity to him doesn't mean you should forgive him when he punches your friend in the face and tries to kill you family. Very well acted on all fronts with a tightly wound believable script. Recomended.

FEAR is a must-see for any Mark Wahlberg fan!

I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it wasn't your basic "teen thriller", which usually has no plot or storyline. Fear kept me on the edge of my seat at all times and I was dying to see what happened next. Although this movie is not one of the huge, widely-known blockbusters out there, it's definately worth checking out! Who knows, you might enjoy it! This movie ROCKS!

Far Better Than I Expected It To Be

I had very low hopes for FEAR . I'd read the synopsis in the TV guideand the plot sounded like one of those psycho killer stalker from hellthrillers that were being churned out without any thought in the mid1990s . Considering it starred singer Marky Mark , Reese Witherspoonand William Petersen who's a rival to Eric Roberts in the straight tovideo / cable TV movie stakes I didn't think this was going to be up tomuch While not being a classic thriller FEAR certainly did hold my attention, probably because much of the characterisation is credible . All toooften in this genre the actor or actress playing the villain reallygoes to town showing the audience what a bad ass they are therebyparodying the role . Mark Wahlberg as David is very restrained for themost part which makes David and credible character and his on screenchemistry with Reese Witherspoon's Nicole is believable , you canbelieve these two characters are genuinely in love with one anothersomething that is all too rare in this type of movie I should also point out that much of the movie revolves around theinteraction of Petersen's Mr Walker who is concerned about hisdaughter's relationship with David . You can't blame the guy forwanting what's best for his offspring and it enhances the credibilityof the story . It's refreshing to have a more thoughtful approach tothis type of genre because if people start turning up dead after 15minutes then things start to get silly , so the violence is kept to aminimum until almost at the end of the movie which does suffersomething of a plot hole because no one seems to have a mobiletelephone at readily hand and don't tell me professional people didn'thave mobile phones in 1996 . Also watch out for references to STRAWDOGS , THE SHINING and NOSFERATU at the climax Even if you're burned out on those 90s stalker from hell thrillers youcould do worse than watch this on a wet Friday evening

Bad boyfriend.

Fear starring Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon is a wicked thriller to say the least. The film also stars William Petersen and Amy Brenneman. Wahlberg plays a psycho boyfriend and Witherspoon is very effective as the naive teenager he falls for. I like this film, some of the scenes seem kinda silly now but overall Fear will keep you coming back for another viewing, enjoy!

Predictable But Entertaining.

"Fear" is a solid but formulaic thriller about a teenage girl namedNicole (Reese Witherspoon). Nicole is your average teenager, and shelives with her architect dad, stepmom, and little brother in herfather's custom-designed, secure home. While going clubbing one nightwith her friend Margo (Alyssa Milano), she meets David (Mark Wahlberg),who seems like a charming young man. She and David begin to form arelationship, despite her father's instinct that David is a dangerousguy. But David's true colors show after he beats up one of Nicole'smale friends for giving her a friendly hug. As Nicole tries to distanceherself from David, he keeps coming back, obsessed and determined toget her back. Nicole relapses for him again, but she finally decides tobreak it off after she sees him being abusive to Margo at his home, where he lives with a bunch of lowlife thugs. But David will haveNicole, and nothing less - even if it means killing her family andfriends. All around, "Fear" is a pretty predictable movie. While it may bepredictable, it is also quite entertaining and held my attention theentire way through. Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon did well in thefilm, especially since this is some of her much earlier work. Wahlbergwas menacing as David, besides some of his angry facial expressionscoming off as a little corny. The chemistry between the two worked wellthough. I found the story to be halfway decent, even though these"romantic thriller revenge" stories have been done before. The finalehouse-attack was great, it was definitely the best part of the wholemovie. If you're a horror fan, this movie may be a little slow for you.It is mostly dramatic and slightly romantic through the first half, then David's true character is really established. Throughout the filmthe violence is kept to a minimum, but the ending sequence is actuallyquite gory. The only problem with the finale is there is one major plothole - nobody has a mobile phone! It was 1996 and this is a ratherwealthy family, you can't tell me they don't own cell phones! Otherthan that though, I thought the ending was really well done.Overall, "Fear" is a decent thriller. The story was interesting (if nota little bit predictable at times) and the acting was decent. Forhardcore horror fans, this may be a little bit slow, but the endingmade it worth it, for me at least. Not bad for the type of movie it is,quite entertaining. 7/10.

A Teen Version Of Fatal Attraction

This film is along the lines of "Fatal Attraction" about an obsessed boyfriend that wont let the girl of his dreams out of his life. But when her father tells him to stay away from her, he becomes crazy and violent as he destroys anything that stands between him and his girl. A great psychological thriller!

Works Quite Well

Movie like this either reach out and pull you in or they don't. Fear pulledme in. I rented this movie about a week after Halloween of 1996 and put itin my VCR not sure what to expect. 2 hours later I ejected the movie fromthe VCR feeling somewhat dazed and overwhelmed. Fear isn't a classic. Butitworks well. It is scary, violent gory and well made. The reason it works sowell is because it was made by people who knew what they were doing. Thewhole stalker style of movies is full of uninspired trash that sounds likeit was made for the USA network.Fear stands heads and shoulders above that (And to some extent above theoriginal Fatal Attraction). It's not afraid to push, to pull us inside, toscare us and give us a good conclusion at the end, one that movies of thistype always mess up.***
