In this remake of the Spencer Tracy classic, George and Nina Banks are the parents of young soon-to-be-wed Annie. George is a nervous father unready to face the fact that his little girl is now a woman. The preparations for the extravagant wedding provide additional comic moments.

Movie Photos:
We have taken some photos of "Father of the Bride". They represent actual movie quality.
Although over the top re what is normal, enough of the movie is close enough to what happens to a father of a bride that the movie is a must see for all fathers who are about to give away their daughter, as I am.
I liked it very much. It was my sort of movie especially with Bowringer in it. Steve MArtin is awesome funny.
This is a remake of the nineteen-fifty film by Vincente Minnelli."Father of the Bride" tells the tale, or rather the traumas, of onefather-in-law to be and his awkward misadventures in planning (andaccepting) his daughter's wedding.Steve Martin fits well into the role of the harassed 'had his day'father who is desperately trying to hang on to his little girl, whileKimberley Williams is an attractive bride-to-be. Comically though, thefilm belongs to Martin Short as the excitable wedding planner. In the end, "Father of the Bride" is a happy ending type movie thatwill bring a smile to your face.Friday, December 27, 1991 - Coburg Drive-in
i thought this was a really cute, touching movie.i found theperformances authentic and sincere as well as how each person reactedto the big event, from the announcement of the big event right to thelast scene in the movie.Steve Martin was terrific as George, theFather.Dianne Keaton was great as the Mother.as for the brideherself,Kimberly Williams, she came off as very real andbelievable.however, the character i liked the most was the wacky weddingchoreographer, played by Martin Short.he was a scream.all in all,a veryheartfelt, well done movie.i have yet to see the original 1950 versionwith Spencer Tracy,Joan Bennett, and Elizabeth Taylor, but i hope tosoon.as for this remake,i give it an 8/10
I absoultley ADORE this movie! Steve Martin is hilarious and perfect for his part. New-comer,(at the time)Kimberly Williams was so precious and had the most perfect personality for the part! Fra`nk, played by Martin Short, gave the movie the little touch that it needed. Overall, this more gets my two thumbs WAY up!
this is a great remaeke it even improves on the slowness of the other flim.all the perfomeances are good.martain shorr tis funny. some of the parts are lifted right from the orignal.the onolyy part i did not like was the scene where the two boys drive the car.itt felllt throw in therre like they had tonhave one last slapstick scene.
First, this review is for Father of the Bride 1 AND 2. If run back toback, they run like one beautiful story. This production is great fromstart to finish. Everything about it is wonderful, including the story, the acting performances and the direction. This is the best example ofMartin's versatility as an actor. His comedic style is rather straightwith zany insertions to highlight the otherwise serious atmosphere ofhis performances. He plays a wonderful straight man-turned-comic-turned straight man. This movie is no exception. His performance is comedic, yet startlinglygenuine.Martin Short is hilarious and Diane Keaton is just as genuine in herportrayal of Steve Martin's wife as is Martin's. I love this movie. Ilove its ability to make you commiserate with Martin's character; withhow he feels, and what he's going through. This one brings up every emotion in the spectrum, and I love it. It'sless about family, and more about life's curves; the every-day thingsthat make us crazy, happy, sad, and ultimately stronger. It'sentertaining and at the same time makes you think, consider, ponder theevents which have led us to where we are now.Combined, they rate 8.6/10 from...the Fiend :.
Father of the Bride is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen! If someone is getting married in your family you should get the family together to watch it. The actors in this movie are great! Steve Martin, Martin Short, Diane Keaton, and Kimberly Williams are probably the best actors for these roles!
Steve Martin is again quite humorous as George Banks in this narrative of his daughter,Annie's engagement announcement when she (Kimberly Williams)returns home from abroad. As an over-reactive father, Banks refuses to believe his little girl has grown up and he needs direction from his patient wife, Nina, (Diane Keaton)throughout the movie. Proud to be her father and refusing to accept monetary relief from his rich future in-laws, Banks reluctantly agrees to hire the expensive wedding co-ordinator, Franck,(Martin Short)that his wife and daughter have chosen. Martin and Short will keep your entire family laughing and/or crying in this hilarious yet sometimes poignant movie as you follow Franck's wedding plans and of course the big day for Annie.I recommend this movie for anyone and rate it 4 stars (out of 5) for it's emotional content and comedy.
This review is from: Father of the Bride (15th Anniversary Edition) (DVD) this is a fun movie to watch even though I will probably never be able to afford the wedding shown in the movie. A fun Movie, I recommend it.
Charles Shyer directs this remake of the original classic comedystarring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. This modernized retake hasGeorge Banks(Steve Martin)coming a little unglued upon the announcementof his daughter Annie's(Kimberley Williams)marriage to an independentcommunications consultant. Groom-to-be Bryan(George Newbern)tries to doeverything right to make the best impression; Daddy Banks is just morethan sentimental about "losing" his daughter, but he completely warpswhen he finds out what the wedding will end up costing. Trying to notget got up in the wedding planning, George thinks back about the goodtimes he has had with Annie. Diane Keaton plays the mother of thebride. Martin is pretty funny without getting ridiculous. And the bridecouldn't be more lovely. Also in the cast: Martin Short, Kieran Culkin,Peter Michael Goetz and Kate McGregor-Stewart.
i think this is the best movie ever.
I am 40, father of a young girl and will always want to watch this remakewhen it's on. I enjoyed the Tracy/Taylor version, but I connect with theupdated version so much more. I agree with previous posters when theycomplain about the unbelievable nature of the house, the family, the moneyissues. Many things are fantastical here. However, I love sentimentalityandnostalgia in my movies (It's A Wonderful Life is my favorite) and thismoviecaptures the love of a dad and a daughter unlike many that have comebeforeand after. Yes, it's displayed in an unrealistic setting, but the writingand then the acting of Martin and Williams set that all aside IMO. I willalways cry (yes, a man who admits he cries watching movies other thanBrian's Song) when I see the scenes of Martin remembering his little girlorduring the moment of their last round of basketball the night before herwedding. These are very sweet, touching moments that many would thinksugary, but when you're watching with your only daughter...it warms yourheart and puts a tear in your eye. A very sweet film overall.
Great comic vehicle for Martin as a father who becomes anervouswreck when he learns his daughter is getting married. Based on the 1950comedy classic that starred Spencer Tracy.
I remember a few years ago seeing Father of the Bride on TV, but ofcourse it's edited and I never finished it, it's sad, I call myself aSteve Martin fan and never finished this movie. It's such a classic initself and is just a nice family film that's a good watch. So I decidedto rent Father of the Bride the other day, I just love this movie. It'sone of the rare films that is genuinely good and just means toentertain you, your family and friends as well. Steve Martin makes sucha great over protective dad, as much as he drives his daughter crazy inthe film, you still gotta love him that he's so protective over hisbaby girl. Father of the Bride is a great comedy and is a good watchwith it's sweet story and lovable characters. Before Meet the Parents, there was Father of the Bride.George has an excellent life: good job, nice home, beautiful wife, andtwo loving kids, one of which is his daughter who has just come homefrom Rome getting her masters in architecture and announces she'sgetting married to a man she met there, Bryan. George is going crazy, loosing his baby girl so fast and now having to deal with not being themain guy in her life that she will go too for help. George has to alsodeal with the crazy wedding planner, Franck Eggelhoffer, trying tobreak up his daughter and her fiancée, and Bryan's rich parents.Father of the Bride is a good film and I really recommend it, it's oneof those films that you get a few good laughs for and just feel goodafterwards. Steve Martin made George such a lovable character, eventhough he's trying to break up his daughter and her fiancée, you couldunderstand why through his narration and the way he talks, every dadcould relate too. Martin Short as Franck Eggelhoffer is a little overdone, but still delivers good laughs. Father of the Bride is a just afun movie that anyone could enjoy, it gives good laughs and might evenmake you shed a tear.7/10
Both Steve Martin and Martin Short bring out their best in father of the bride. The comedy gets better and better as the movie goes along. Steve Martin plays a father who is afraid of the fact that his daughter is now a woman and will be getting married. With Martin Short puttin together the wedding, and Steve Martin Dealing with the wedding, this movie will keep you laughing out loud throughout it all.
This movie is probably one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. If you have ever been married or have a really loving dad than this movie will touch you so much. It's also a really good movie to watch if your in for a good laugh and a few tears.
Diane Keaton is a pathetic actress. She is so boring and phony. She isthe same on and off screen. I saw her in an interview with EllenDegeneres and she behaves exactly the same as she does in movies. Herfoolish facial expressions make me want to change channels. She hasbeen in a couple of good movies, but they would have been better hadsomeone else been picked for the part. Steve Martin doesn't add much tothe movie either. He over acts as well and also ruins an old favorite. The ridiculous part Martin Short plays only adds more idiocies to themovie. I've tried to watch the movie twice but both times had to turnit off.
I know a lot of people consider this a chick flick, but it's actually pretty funny and entertaining if you take the time to watch it. Yes, it has its..."soft" moments. But Steve is funny as usual, and the gay wedding planner (or whatever he's supposed to be) is a riot.
I have never seen the original so I can't really compare the two. On itsown merits I thought FOTB to be really entertaining. Of course itspredictable, but its meant to be. martin Short is hilarious as the weddingorganiser, and Steve Martin is at his dead pan best. Kimberly Williams wasexcellent in her role as the young bride to be, particularly as it was herdebut. The story goes along nicely but I must say the wedding seemed likethe most expensive and lavish in wedding movie history, particularly seemingGeorge Banks is your normal suburban father- not a multi millionaire. Thereare some fairly amusing scenes, but really its a nice movie. Its the typeof movie you watch with your mother, or sister and think if only love, lifeand family were really that simple. In other words its escapism, almostlike a fantasy...enjoy.
