Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Great 80's movie! But was this DVD made politically correct?

I have always LOVED this movie.Bought it right away when it came out on dvd.But was very disapointed with the final product.Too many scenes were left out. One in particular is the one where Stacy(Jennifer Jason Leigh) gets the abortion, why skip over that. During that time that was a ballsy thing to put in a movie!Hopefully this SE Fast Times will be much better!

The American Graffiti of the 80s

I was a few years out of high school when this came out, and really hitclose to home for me. After I saw it, I looked up some of my old friends, most of them also saw it too, and we said to each other, "that'sus!"Many of the characters were a lot like the people I went to school with. Iknew my share of stoners, studs, and girls who getting guys wasn't thebiggest hang up in their life. Even today, I can sit, and watch this and Iget fond memories of my old friends, and the fun we used tohave. This was made during the post-disco, pre-greed era of the 80s that was fartoo short. I'm surprised to find out this movie is still popular consideringit is far from being politically correct. I'll admit, I wouldn't want mykids to some of the things these high school kids did, but it is a reminderhow much fun the era was.

Excellent Movie But The DVD Lacks

FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH is a classic teen film. Its like the CITIZEN KANE of the "Rated R Teen Films". FAST TIMES is a timeless classic. I was somewhat dissapointed at the DVD. I was dissapointed cause they didn't bother to put any of the "deleted scenes" or "additional scenes" on this disc. I think they should have put out a Director's Cut of this movie cause evendentally they show alot of deleted stuff on TV. The commentary track on this DVD is great also, the commentary track was longer than the movie. What was with the "HANGOUTS" featurette thing. The featurette was informative. Overall the movie is excellent but the DVD is missing a lot.

STILL GREAT 22 YEARS LATER....

I can still remember the first time I saw "Fast Times". It was back in 1983 and this was one of the first tapes I rented when we finally got a VCR. This is a great film because it not only captures a period in time correctly, but it is also right on the money in regards to many of the things that take place in high school. The one thing that really stands out is the way director Amy Heckerling has created a place which it would seem is only inhabited by kids. The only adults in the film who are given any amount of screen time are the teachers. Make sure to watch the film with commentary by Amy Heckerling and Cameron Crowe, that alone is worth the price of this DVD.

Proof that regardless of the era, high school has never been a simple experience.

"In Ridgemont? We can't even get cable TV here, Stacy, and you wantromance."I have a budding appreciation for the 80's. I was just a wee tykeduring the later part of that decade, so I don't remember anythingabout those years. But all the teen movies that I've seen have led meto believe it was an awesome and corny time to be an adolescent.Fast Times at Ridgemont High is one of the iconic movies from that era,and that reputation is richly deserved. It still holds up very welltoday. It starred younger versions of a bevy of today's biggest stars, like Forest Whitaker and Sean Penn, alongside some of the names thatwere synonymous with the 80's, like Jennifer Jason Leigh and PhoebeCates. It's very much an ensemble movie, with a collection ofcharacters and scenarios that range from light-hearted (Penn) to moredramatic (Leigh).   The script was courtesy of the talented Cameron Crowe, who adapted itfrom a book that he re-entered high school to research as he waswriting it. As a result, this wasn't a simple sex romp or teen comedy.Sure, it was pretty funny in parts, but it also dealt with thesometimes heavy issues that teens were wrestling with back then (andare still tackling today). The twists and turns of teenagerelationships, unplanned pregnancies, jobs, abortions, and the like, are touched on in a genuine (if simplified) manner. Even so, this movieis a lot more evenly split between comedy and social commentary thanThe Breakfast Club was, for example.  Movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High are pretty ageless. It's not abad idea to give it a viewing if you missed it the first time around.I'm glad that I did.

FAST TIMES KICK'S A _ _ "

Exellent portrayal of high school kids during the late 70's early 80's.Sean Penn is very amusing as a burn out surfing dude and turns in a memorable performance.Very enjoyable film with "rockin" soundtrack.

A real treat

A movie like this may be "slightly" outdated. I'm sure this movie faredbetter with the teens and pre-teens of the eighties/the "Me" Generation. However--being that I saw it just recently--I thought it was very good andvery original. You can spot up-and-coming stars of the present like SeanPenn, Forrest Whitaker and if you look really quickly--Nicolas Cage. Thefilm definitely has some memorable characters, including JeffSpicolli--played amusingly by Penn. It's nice to see Penn--who's usuallycredited for serious roles--in a light comic persona. I've always been abig fan of the music of that decade. In that area, I cannot bedisappointed. The film opens with the great Go-Go's hit "We Got the Beat." There are landmark moments, like Spicolli ordering pizza into a classroom. And there is the famous Judge Reinhold masturbation scene in which he dreamsof Phoebe Cates--who looked EXTREMELY HOT back then!--rising from theswimming pool, about to romance him. That, in a way, continued theslowly-growing fad of the gross-out comedy, first spawned by "Animal House"in 1978. I'm sure I can't totally relate to the characters in this movie, though they are well drawn-out. However, I'm sure anybody who has been ateenager in the decade can. I like how the teenage characters in eightiesmovies, compared to those of now, are a lot more...real! In teen moviesnowadays, you see these polished blondie bimbos with no zits or any facialblemishes. They all look like Barbie Dolls. If you compare the girls ineighties movies to those of the nineties and the millenium--there's a hugedifference! "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" is a very funny comedy that is a sheer treatand will make you feel refreshed. It's a bigger treat for people who grewinto adolescence during that decade, but it's still fun for everybody. My score: 7 (out of 10)

aight

This is a pretty funny movie. Not one of my favorites but probably because I didn't grow up in the time that it came out. It still makes me laugh quite a bit when I watch it but for my generation it wouldn't be one of my first recomendations.

80's Cult Classic Leaves Something to be Desired on DVD

"Fast Times at Ridgemont High" is truly one of the funniest films to come from the so-called "me" decade. The fact that this picture has such a cult following is a testament to its staying power and relevancy in 2000. I predict that in 2010 it will still be a good snapshot at high school kids in that era. It's clear to me that amazon.com reviewer Marshall Fine doesn't have a clue about movies when he refers to Cameron Crowe, who scripted this picture, as an "overrated filmmaker". To the contrary, Crowe has established himself as one of the brightest of the most recent crop of filmmakers. His script as well as Amy Heckerling's direction in "Fast Times", show that they really have tapped into what makes high school kids of the 80's tick. Sean Penn turns in the performance of his career as Jeff Spicoli, a stoner with no direction and little ambition (other than to have Van Halen play at his birthday party, of course). This movie also marks the acting debuts of Judge Rheinhold, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Forest Whitaker, Anthony Edwards, and Eric Stolz. Ray Walston's brief performance as a crusty teacher is also noteworthy. My only complaint about this motion picture is that certain scenes which were added to the television edit of the movie were deleted for the DVD. They helped give some direction to the plot and will be missed. That aside, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" is to 80's high school students what "Porky's" was to 50's high school students and "The Hollywood Knights" was to 60's high school students. I'm still waiting for the definitive comedy film on 70's high schoolers.

Philippe Martine: Spicoli!!!!What a mervallous man !!!

Wowe!!! What a movie! The idea of a drugged in the movie was mervallous, but the idea of the life of little mongols in a city don't make me happy. Spicoli, a sozi of me .(If we talk about drug)...His mervallous stock of pipe water, pipe, paper... What a beautiful man! He's everytime buzzed at the school and he said to his teacher "Hey Dude".His teacher was a little nurds who think that everybody was buzzed. I think that the movie is like today. Sex, drugs, a beautiful world. In conclusion, this movie requered a best scenario but SPICOLI up my rate of stars.

Truly a classic!

If you are looking for any sort of depth in a film, this one's not foryou. If you're looking for a fun, funny film, this is it! In my opinion, thisisfar and away Sean Penn's best performance thus far. Jeff Spicoli and hisfriends are the essence of the 80's. Everyone is looking to get 1) highand2) laid. The film shows the happiness, frustration, ugliness, and joy ofbeing a teen during the 80's. However, none of this goes too deeply, sotheviewer need not do anything except enjoy the (largely sophomoric) humor. This is one not to be missed!

Great movie, but not the DVD it should be

While the film itself is a bona fide classic, and the transfer is crisp and clear, this DVD production is sorely lacking. The extras are slim, and the bonus soundtrack featuring commentary from directory Amy Heckerling and writer Cameron Crowe is unenlightening. The original trailer (showing how the studio sold the film to audiences), and the documentary (including contemporary interviews with several of the players) are nice bonuses.Like other seminal teen films (e.g., American Grafitti), so many imitations sprouted in their wake, it's hard to remember the ground that was broken with the original releases. But this was a truly groundbreaking film in its attitude and perspective on high school life. Crowe's undercover study yielded a dead-on portrait, and Heckerling's direction makes the most of it.As a DVD production, though, the enhancements are disappointing. The additional soundtrack, featuring the director and writer in conversation is incredibly insipid, repetitive and sycophantic. 90% of it is taken up with Heckerling complimenting Crowe, Crowe complimenting Heckerling, and Heckerling and Crowe drooling over Sean Pean. Very little of it concerns the actual filmmaking, and, surprisingly, given the lucidity with which Heckerling and Crowe are able to commit their thoughts to film, they shed very little light on the film itself.Even more maddening is that Heckerling and Crowe often speak of alternate takes and extra footage included in the TV version of the film, yet none of it is included on the DVD.Move: 5 stars. DVD production: 2 stars.

not so good

I find this movie not as good as people told me that it was. There are moments that are interesting and times that were slow.I especially like Spicoli because of is attitude and how he acted in class(when he ordered a pizza in Mr. Hand's history class). It's the type of film that I like to watch to lough.Do there was some good part that came close to are reality.I give three star.

A good movie about the life of students!!!!!

I really like this movie. Is the best movie I see about the life of students in high school. My favorite actress in this movie is Stacy. At the beginning of the movie, she just want sex and sex she forget, in a couple , he don't just have sex, he have love first. But in the end she now that. She don't just want sex again, she want love first. The life in 1983 and 1999 is not really different. The students have her boys or girlsfriends and he sleep with her. O.K. I now he have a person, they sleep with all the people he see. But the life in school don't really change, for me.It's a good movie for each person. You can see the life in 1983 and the life in 1999. But d'ont forget he have small difference about the two world..!!! If you d'ont see this movie, run take her in your videoclub!!!!!!

Film that defined a generation

Much like Easy Rider in the 60s, and Saturday Night Fever in the 70s, FastTimes defined the 80s. Some of the themes, though, transcend the timeperiodand still ring true today. It's a very funny film and I highly recommendchecking it out if you are interested in a trip back to the 80s.

this one defines CLASSIC

THIS is a blast from the past. Was funny then and is funny now. Its got a great cast of so many young stars that really would go on to Great hollywood carreers. That made the commentary on the film by the creators a treat to listen too as they reflected back on the cast and the roles etc......i liked that alot. The movie itself holds up well over time. A classic movie has alot of classic scenes and i was a highschooler when this came out so it was GREAT revisit to a classic comedy.
