When this show came on..I had never seen such offensive animated materialonbasic cable..I think it does a better job in the offensive apartment thenSouth Park did because South Park focused more on gross out humor and it'ssocial attacks were more annoying than funny. Family Guy had me on theground laughing..it was so morally corrupt..the use of flashback sceneswerealways funny. My favorite scene was when Peter as a teenager is pointingandlaughing at a guy at his mother's funeral going "haha he misses his mommyhemisses his mommy" in sing song..so cruel and funny. I am so angry that FOXjerked this show around. It kept going off and on off and on..never on afull season run..and even now I don't know if the show is cancelled costheywaited a whole full year without reruns before season 3 aired back aroundOctober..for a short period of time even though season 3 wasnt asfunny..thehumor toned down..it was still worthy to watch and keep on..and FOX has areal bad problem with shoving out too many crap shows and replacing thegoodones..they need to cool it. Anyway a box set is out..I guess thats all Ihave to live on to enjoy this classic comedy
I love South Park, I like The Simpsons and Trailer Park Boys isfriggin' awesome, but the funniest show I have EVER seen in my life isFamily Guy. The first thing idiots do when they see this show is say,"oh well this is obviously just the simpsons family with south parkhumour", and if you are someone who says that then do me a favour, die. Anyway regarding the Simpsons family, does Maggie speak English? ...does Santas Little Helper speak? ... does Lisa get abused all the timefor her annoying views? ... does Mr Burns like penis shaped objects?... is Barney black? ... is Carl in a wheelchair? ... is Lenny asex-mad man-whore? ... is Bart a 15 years old? ... does Marge have abrother? ... is Homer a fisherman? ... no? Still think this is a ripoff of The Simpsons? Didn't think so!Fox being the smart dudes they are cancelled this show, probablybecause people were dying from aneurisms through how genius this showreally is, however, finally Fox came to their senses in bringing thisshow back for 3-5 more seasons, with the DVD sales obviously being thecatalyst. Again with Season 4 and 5 people say its lost it edge, but anyone wholikes humour that is outstandingly funny will love Family Guy. I justhope they get as many seasons as possible on air in the next few yearsbefore Fox has another mood swing, long live Family Guy.P.S I am not Seth MacFarlane.Hail Hail.
"Family Guy " used to be funny. There was many similarities with "TheSimpsons " but even that it was funny to watch. But not anymore. Why? because a show that replace humor with cultural references couldbe funny to see sometimes, but when the same jokes are repeated onemillion times is not longer funny. It's the same thing, again and againand it's getting worse. The stories are incredible stupid and the showit's monotone. To get it worst ,the animation and the voiceperformances are terrible. It's true that shows as "South Park " and"The Simpsons" aren't famous for have a incredible animation, but"Family Guy " it's just awful. All the characters seems to have a dullexpression of boredom in their faces (very much like me when I see thisshow ) The voices are annoying.(and the musical numbers are lame)Andaren't funny. The voices are just annoying. Of course, there are somepathetic attempts to generate controversy, making jokes about thingsabout racism, homophobia and abortion. This it's a lame show that usedto be funny, but now it's only stupid. Seth Mac Farlane it's a sellouthack.
This show is, without a doubt, the funniest animated program on television, easily trumping the aging "Simpsons." Nowhere else is "Family Guy's"unpredictable, spontaneous style of humor duplicated (perhaps the unfairlyshort-lived NBC sitcom "Working," but this show really takes it to a wholenew level beyond that). The series relies less on seeing how a storylinewill develop than the Simpsons (not that that's entirely absent) and moreand attacking the viewer with a constant barrage of jokes and one-liners,which it pulls off surprisingly well. The way this show delivers laughs bycatching viewers by surprise would work well enough on its own, however, thewriters go the extra mile with jokes that are also clever and lines thatarevery quotable. As the Simpsons will likely pass soon, Family Guy should be stepping in asits rightful successor, NOT being cancelled. Goodness knows, if there'sanyshow that deserves to be saved from cancellation a second time, it's thisone.
You cannot compare "Family Guy" to "The Simpsons". The only thing they havein common is that they were both on FOX and that they areanimated."Family Guy" is for the adult with no-holes barred, sometimes black comedy. This series tackled everything, and did it from a really cerebral approach.Peter Griffith, the head of the family is not dumb, he's just "here" dealingwith life as it comes to him daily. Lois, his wife came from the upper classbut you'd hardly ever know it. His eldest son Chris is slow but artistic, his Daughter Meg is smart but not drop dead gorgeous, his dog Brian is thesmartest of the household and his baby, Stewie is a mad scientist intraining who is bent on destroying his mother for bringing him into thisworld. Dysfunctional? Maybe. Hilarious, you bet. This show reminds me of what the Farlley Brothers would have done if theymade a weekly cartoon series. Nothing is beyond touch here, so if you have athin skin, get offended easily, then this is NOT the series for you. If youlike tongue in cheek humor, making fun of everybody and everything...you'vefound your pot of gold in this series. I love this show.I'm glad the FOX Network took a chance with this, but currently the seriesis re-running on "Cartoon Network" as part of the "Adult Swim" block andthere is where it should have always been.
SPOILERSI know, Family Guy is a rip off of the Simpsons. Peter is just likeHomer. Lois is just like Marge. But, Chris is not like Bart at all. Megis not like Lisa at all. Brian is not like Santa's Little Helper atall. Stewie is not like Maggie at all. Also, Family Guy's humor is notlike the Simpsons at all. The Simpsons is just like a real family. Ithas some things that would never happen, but overall it's a veryrealistic cartoon. Family Guy, on the other hand, has silly humor thatit could happen, but it would be very odd if it did happen. Family Guyalso consists of flash-backs or recurring gags, like the Evil Monkeythat lives in Chris's bedroom. But mostly, it's just Peter's wackyflash-backs.Family Guy has a story just like the Simpsons. A regular, suburbanfamily are in wacky, silly situations. The thing is, Family Guy'ssituations are much wackier, and unrealistic. For example, a familycould go on a reality show, in an episode of the Simpsons. Family Guy,on the other hand, consists of a talking dog and talking baby going toEurope. See, Family Guy is not really realistic. Although itunrealistic, it's a good show throughout, with all the movie parodiesand wacky plots.Overall, this is a great show, although it can never be as good as theSimpsons. I also find Family Guy's humor very original, which I liked. Also, some things can be pretty offensive.8/10 Recommend Titles: The Simpsons, South Park
Family Guy was, without a doubt, one of the 5 funniest shows I have everseen on network TV. In the first season, you would see a gag and go,"*laughing* Oh my god, that is hilarious!" In the second season you wouldsee a gag and go, "*laughing harder* Oh, my god, that is hilarious! Canthey even do that?!" In the third season, however, you would see a gag andgo, "Hehe, that's pretty funny...haven't I seen that before?" This was dueto the fact that after the show was feared cancelled after the second season(despite winning an Emmy!), many of the good writers left, and they had tohire new ones when the show was renewed. Of course, Fox had to kill theshow by giving it the same time slot as Friends...why must they do that?!?Nothing can beat Friends, which sucks for whatever has to share that timeslot. Anyway, what made Family Guy funny for me was the laugh-a-minute jokesetup, with occasional shock humor (like a 70s-era Peter running up toCharles Manson and several others and saying, "You guys! I just got invitedto a party at Sharon Tate's house! Now you guys can come, but you gottapromise not to embarass me..."). The kind of jokes that were filled to thebrim with pop-culture references that would make you point and laugh andthink, "What must (whoever's being made fun of) think of that?" (orsometimes, "Why would (whoever) so shamelessly skewer THEMSELVES?"). Of course, I would like to praise Cartoon Network for picking it up for thestation's "Adult Swim" time slot, and that there will be a DVD released. Rest in peace, Family Guy, and may you get a resurrection soonenough.
When Family Guy first premiered, I was not in a discriminating mood. With the 1990s containing a wealth of clever, surreal cartoons, whyshould I be? Nickelodeon produced Doug; Ren and Stimpy and RockosModern Life among other fine cartoons(Yes, this includes Spongebob).Allhad quirky, dreamlike animation and surprisingly sophisticated storiesand dialog. The Simpsons became an outright phenomenon, perhaps not asbrilliant as its biggest defenders claim it to be, but a very fineinvestment of your time and certainly dismisses the false axiom thatall TV is junk. South Park started out as a crude but hilarious attackon everything with unique and intelligent satire underneath. It evolvedto become a Monty Python- esquire show with outrageous concepts andbrutally swift and sharp societal critiques(Such as their defense ofthe noble underpants gnomes) and eventually settled to be entirely selfreferential and "meta" like the Simpsons did, and has unfortunatelyjumped the shark. Family Guy is superficially like The Simpsons andSouth Park. It pushes buttons and is a favorite among college studentsand bestiality enthusiasts. However, what it has in loquacity it lacksin true wit.The show is famous for its use of gimmicks, especially for flashbacks. Many are references to bad TV sitcoms or commercials. Some arefunny(Especially from the first two seasons), most are not. Arereferences inherently funny? I'm not sure, but they are mostly what theshow stands on considering that its characters are painfullyuninteresting. Where Homer and Bart have charm, and Cartman has anartillery of self awareness and pure outrageousness to back up hisawful behavior, Peter Griffin has no excuse. He's just a loud, obnoxious pig. Anything funny coming from his character is only becausethe writers forget how to be unfunny that day. Lois is also veryshallow and dull; Meg is a prop, only to be abused; Chris is borderlineretarded and only occasionally funny, and the two main stars of theshow(Stewie and Brian) are so inconsistent in their characterizationsthat it all really kind of pointless.Other gimmicks I can't stand are when a character points to somethingobviously and lingers on it for an uncomfortably long time. Thishappens a lot lately, and I can't bear it any longer. Not just the oftmentioned chicken that likes to beat Peter up, I'm talking about thepainful moments where they talk about pop culture and prod it as ifthey are alien spectators. That's not wit or even ironic humor, it'stotally boring and lifeless. Not that the show can't be funny, in fact some of the earlier episodeshad me rolling. Highlights include the pilot episode, where Peter losestouch with reality after losing his precious television; when Petersreligious zealot father shows up and wreaks havoc; When Peter becomes anarc at Megs school, and the "pancake" episode. I suspect these are theepisodes that accidentally incorporated actual human traits in itscharacters, or merely were times the writers had actual comedicinspiration. One last thing, the show is not offensive. It's only offensive to thosewho wouldn't watch the show in the first place, so it's almost like acircle jerk to the choir of hipsters.
This cartoon, although at times (most times) politically incorrect isthe funniest thing I have ever seen! It is definitely for adults orteenagers, I am 17 and love it! It brings all the things people thinkand are to afraid to say to our screens! It also brings very randomvery entertaining scenarios which no real person would live through! This show is full of bathroom humour and is not at all ashamed to laughat anything. I'll admit there have been a few episodes where I havefelt the writers have been distasteful but overall I can not fault thisprogramme! I'm sure many people would find this programme vile and isuppose it does have an acquired taste, (and after I gave a rating of 1star to the Godfather trilogy many people are going to think i'm nuts!)but this programme is amazing! It is The Simpsons but ruder with a fatman, his skinny, beautiful wife, a daughter everyone hates, a son withan evil monkey in his closet, a talking college-drop out dog and a babyhell bent on killing his mother this show is a must see!
We travel to fictional Quahog, Rhode Island, home of fat, drunkenbuffoon Peter Griffin, sultry wife Lois, dumb, but kind-hearted sonChris, teenage drama queen Meg, Stewie, the British-sounding baby benton world domination, and Brian, the dog; the dog that talkssophisticated, drinks sophisticated...Almost every episode is hilarious, and creator Seth MacFarlane does nothesitate to add celebrities committing acts of, let's say, unusualdoings, (Luke Perry as Adam West's homosexual bed-mate, Keanu Reeves asa brain-dead washout) but that does not interfere with the intelligenceand consistent humor of a show somehow always teetering on the brink ofcancellation. Controversial acts that add to the hilarity include thekidnapping of the former pontiff, (JP2, RIP) among many others. VERYENJOYABLE, NOT TIRED.
One I first heard about another Prime Time Cartoon hitting the networks. Ifigured that was enough. With The Simpsons and King of the Hill. But thisshow puts them to shame And not only other Cartoons but shows with Realpeople too. The comedy is fast and well written, But you must have an openmind and sense of human. Kind of like when you compare Green Acres toPetticoat Junction. Same sort of setting and premise. But Green Acres wasmuch funnier and more hip than Petticoat Junction, Thats how I view FamilyGuy to The Simpsons. Put Family guy in the league with Son of the BeachandGet Smart.
What more can you say about Family Guy other than it replaces theSimpsons as the flagship of animated mass-market (non-cable) prime timeentertainment. This is not a knock to the Simpsons- they have been andstill are shaping the landscape with their innovative writing. FamilyGuy has pushed the envelope past good taste, common sensibility, andeven adherence to 30 minute sitcom guidelines. The rough skeleton of the show serves as a superstructure for comedybits which would be impossible to segue to otherwise. The illogicaljumpiness of the main plots (Which are sometimes thin) to thegutbusting asides is the focus of many of the series' critics. I canonly ask that those watching the series critically to get past this-suspension of sitcom guidelines is essential to enjoyment of FamilyGuy.It's not "The Simpsons", and it's not "Everybody Loves Raymond" (thankGod). It's Seth McFarland's masterpiece, and if you don't take itseriously, it's really darned funny.
Everything about this show is terrible. Its premise even sets itself upto get cheap laughs with bad writing. A "disfunctional family"-themehas already been used too many times, most notably by the Simpsons, which is an excellent show with great writing and many laughs.Meanwhile, Family Guy has about five minutes of story in each episode, with tons of celebrity jokes and random flashbacks thrown in. Now, ifthis was original or funny, sure, I'd think it was clever. But no, it'snot funny at all. In fact, the only reason the episodes are like thisis because it is the easiest way to effortlessly crank out episodeafter episode of this junk. Much of this show is unoriginal, and whatis original is just lame. It is also amazingly crude and irreverent, which again can be fine if it's still intelligent. Animation isn'teverything either, but from an artistic point of view, this show failsalso, proving yet again that Family Guy strives for as many cheap jokesand easy shortcuts as possible. People enjoy this show, and I don'treally care, because people can enjoy anything they want, no matter howmuch it aims for the lowest common denominator. But no, I don'trecommend this, especially for anyone who wants to someday study filmor become a writer. This is cheap entertainment that aims low and hasfound success in this. The fact that this is so successful says badthings about America.
Seriously, this is the best show I've ever seen. It's completelyhilarious;every time I see an episode, I laugh the whole way through. Even if I'veseen the episode before, there are so many little jokes that I always seesomething I missed before. I never get tired of watching this show. Alotof the humor is kind of offbeat, and some might think it's mean, buttruly,as long as you don't have a stick up your behind, you'll get a kick outofit. I'm devastated that this incredible show went off the air. SethMacFarlane is one of the most talented people ever; his characters amusemeto no end.
This is not the best animated show out there. It is a few notches under theSimpsons and Futurama (the new triumph on the network, though they don'tseem to think so putting it below prime time), but a couple of notches abovethe PJs and the god awful King of the Hill, often the most painful show towatch on television. I can understand why people would not like this show. Its plots are almostnonsensical. Plot points occur at breakneck speed, and there are quickpauses for cheap jokes, funny flashbacks, and especially pop culturereferences. These pop culture references are the main reason I watch theshow. The Simpsons and Futurama are abundant with them, too, but The FamilyGuy usually has several a minute. Perhaps you don't like that, and that'sokay. I guess you could call me a bona fide geek, loving to point out thereferences. I love the fact that The Simpsons has parodied/referencedCitizen Kane, a film which many will call the best film of all time, about 5different times. At least 2 whole episodes of that show were based aroundsections of the plot of Citizen Kane.Futurama parodies/references more recent pop culture references. I've seenArmageddon and ID4, among others. They are often funny, but it lacks theobscurity in its references that the Simpsons has.Now there is the Family Guy. Well, its references bounce from old movies, children's literature, retro 70s camp television, Looney Toons, andespecially commercials. It might not have made much sense to some viewers, but when Peter Griffin chased a sock stealing faun through the landromatdrier into Narnia, I laughed hard. When Brian (the talking dog) was chasingaround the Gravy Train, I laughed hard, even though the many people withwhom I was watching this show (when they were laughing constantlybeforehand) were totally silent. I laughed a lot when Meg was handed a bomb,it exploded, and she spontaneously had a duck bill on the other side of herhead. There were a lot of episodes near the end of the first season which werejust plain terrible, so I quit watching it after that. I have checked inthrice since it started its second season, and there wasn't an episode Idisliked. Now I'm going to have to add it to my regular schedule. I justwish Fox would take King of the Hill away and exchange its time slot forthat of Family Guy. Then, with Futurama-Family Guy-Simpsons, I'd becompletely set.
When i first saw family guy i thought it was pretty funny. It had alikable main character and some very good voice acting. But that doesnot take away from the fact that it is just an annoying rip off of theSimpsons. The fact that The Simpsons has been going for 23 seasons andvery rarely repeats it's self is a testament to the shows originality. But some very stale and over used gags make family guy sometimesunbearable to watch. despite the odd brilliant episode family guy isjust a repetitive waste of time that does nothing to keep youinterested in the stories. As far as animated shows go family guy isnot that bad and it's a heck of a sight better than south park. But thefact that some of the episodes story line's are stolen directly fromthe Simpson's makes this carbon copy of America's greatest family.Another thing i find annoying is the show repetitive racism andhostility towards people with physical and mental disability's. I meanthe world is already harsh enough on these people without a crappy TVshow poking fun! Despite all things family guy does offer someentertaining shows and can occasionally be worthwhile.
Family guy is an adult comedy cartoon that has been canceled more timesthan i remember because of its overt nature. it follows the lives ofthe griffin family the worlds most disfunctitonal family. there ispeter the over weight father who is a complete idiot, Lois the caringwife, meg their daughter , Chris their overweight son, stewie a talkingbaby who seeks world domination and the death of his mother, and theiralcoholic dog Brian.the show has had its ups and downs in terms ofcomedy with the jokes becoming slightly more lackluster as the show hasentered the 4th 5 th and 6th series which pale in the first comparisonto the first 3 series. the show is comedy gold and isn't afraid to pokefun at anything or anyone. i hope you have enjoyed the brief plotdescription. heres me saying goodnight and gigity goo
Family Guy is not a better, or funnier, show than the Simpsons (even in it'snewest seasons) but I do grant it the honour of having the funniest sceneEVER in cartoon history, involving a court case and a jug of juice. It'sfunnier then it sounds. That aside, the show was full of hysterical moments, involving people likeWilly Wonka, Hansen, The Brady Bunch etc. One of the funnier scenes, alsoquite awful, has the father reflecting on the most disappointing day of hislife-in a flashback we see him at the hospital being told his baby is agirl. Funny show, it was a lot funnier then people gave it creditfor.
What world do we live in when you can make mice women strip so theydon't have to pay the rent? What world do we live in where you can sellyour daughter to a nerd? What world do we live in where we can laugh sohard at these repulsive jokes that our lungs collapse and we no longerneed oxygen but Family Guy in it's place? A Damn good one! This is the funniest show on TV. I was originally reluctant to watch itbecause I am a big Simpson fan. This is if the Simpsons was on crackfor the half-hour and the some. I love this show, even though I amoffended b y this. This is one of my favorite shows up there with RobotChiken and Scrubs (and don't forget That 70's Show).Recomendations: Robot Chiken 10/10American Dad 3/10
I'll go ahead and say it, I never payed ANY attention to Family Guyuntil about June 2002. It just didn't seem funny in the ads. But I didwatch it, and I'm the happiest man on Earth because I decided to watchit. I think the reason I didn't watch it was because they used Stewieto promote it. He's not nearly as funny as Peter, whom they should'veused to promote it. It's clever, well-written, nicely drawn, edgy, fast, and just wicked funny. There's nothing in the show that's takenseriously, like a lot of stuff in The Simpsons and Futurama. There'snever a sad ending, everything's back to normal, and they just saidsomething stupidly funny. There's something about The Simpsons thatI've always wanted to address. It's a CARTOON! You can do anything in acartoon, yet The Simpsons is more like a sitcom than a cartoon, becausethey fail to do anything ridiculous. In Family Guy, you can gettransported to Narnia through a dryer, you can have a talking dog, youcan turn the house into a giant puppet, you can become Death, become afantastic pianist only when you're drunk, meet Death, or lose all yourbones! The sky's the limit with this show! My favorite thing about theshow is, nothing, I mean nothing, is taken seriously, and everything'sturned into a joke. Everything sentimental is broken by a fart. Alesson learned is turned into a punchline. The jokes just never stopcoming at you!
