Sweet Movie

This review is from: Easy A (DVD) This is a fun and sweet movie. Emma Stone plays a High School kid with somewhat eccentric but loving parents, who are also fun to see and gets caught up in what many would say is something silly. For a High School kid it also can be socially destructive but in the end teaches a moral lesson. This movie is pleasant to watch and fun as well. Emma does a good job at showing humor and a dramatic side as well. She is always a pleasure to watch and brings life to any character she portrays.

Pleasantly Surprised

I attended a free preview of this movie and without having done anyresearch on the movie and just based on a short synopsis, had prettylow expectations walking into the cinema. It's always great coming outof a cinema being pleasantly surprised by an enjoyable movie and that'sexactly what happened! I've always been a fan of fast witty dialogueand this movie definitely delivers! Virtually every character in themovie whether minor or major seems to have something funny to say, andwhile there wasn't a lot of ROFL moments, there were quite a few LOL'sthroughout the movie! To me, it's one of those movies perfect for aFriday night to unwind from work without having to use too many braincells (but enough so that you don't walk out of there thinking you'dwasted your time and intellect!) - it's one of those movies that i'lldefinitely be purchasing on DVD when it comes out!!

Average

This movie wasn't very realistic. It was pretty annoying to watch. Some parts were funny but a really "that's lame" kind of funny. Overall this movie could have been so much better. I thought it was stupid how the main character wore a corset after she started lying for her acquaintances. Her corset was the only thing she wore and with a pair of jeans. It looked like lingerie and nobody wears lingerie to school, eh? Yeah right. So, even if you were lying for your friends that doesn't mean you're going to start wearing lingerie outfits to school!?!? Nobody does that. Get real! Stupid movie. I also didn't like how the the nerds kept asking her to lie for them, it was just, again, very unrealistic. Does this really happen, where a girl degrades herself all in the name of someone else's insecurity!?1? Yeah, right. Only in Easy A. The plot for this movie is easily sexist and not very thought provoking. It is your typical teenage boy male plot which was also very poorly executed. I cannot begin to fathom. I agree with the person who said this movie just didn't really leave any type of particular feeling behind. I didn't feel like "oh my god, that was an awesome movie" like I did in the movie they made fun of (in the movie) Can't Buy Me Love. Now that is an awesome 5 star movie for this particular genre. Go see it, if you haven't seen it. :) I would honestly give this movie 2 1/2 stars. I barely recommend. We all know who would like this movie though without offending anyone. :)

Fun, entertaining but unrealistic movie

If you take reality out of the equation and look at this movie as a funloving teen comedy then "Easy A" can be considered quite entertaining.Emma Stone was perfect for the role and it was fun watching hersuccessfully transform from an innocent teenager to the school sexsymbol. Her narration throughout the movie added to the story line andhelped the audience to get to know the real Olive. However, in myopinion, it seems highly unrealistic in modern day society that theschool would be in such an uproar after learning of her activities asit is common knowledge that teenagers are sexually active and highschool is a playground for sex and drugs. All in all it was a fun moviebut I recommend you save your money and rent the DVD.

Director Will Gluck shows wicked comic timing and uncommon warmth in an overworked genre.

Cool

Well first I would like to congratulate the writers of this film. It'ssociologically very well written and show no lies about relationshipbetween teenagers. It's interesting to see a movie that doesn't show that inexistent highschool people with much older actors and stuff like that. "Easy A" getsto the many issues in society and mainly in youth in general. Guilt, reputation, need to acceptance, gossips, sex, envy, religion and thelist goes on and on.Emma Stone is an ordinary actress, her character isn't that likable butisn't hateful. Amanda Bynes for once in her life gets out of the nicegirl zone and becomes a spoiled girl alienated by religion, eventhought it's clear to notice she's just jealous of Olive.Good film, go see it!!

A sassy and funny movie that gives imagination, pluck, and creative playfulness a good name.

It's a keeper.

doktorf 2012-05-09 08:23:16

Way better than I thought it would be.

This film is well written and well acted. Ms Stone puts in a fineperformance and just about everyone else really gives their best, particularly Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, Thomas Hayden Church andLisa Kudrow. Also thank you Amanda Bynes for rethinking your decisionto retire from acting! One reviewer said that the characters were not fully fleshed out but Ifind myself disagreeing. The writer and director got a lot out of somecharacters that sometimes had only a minute or so screen time. Some ofthem we learned a lot about their private anguish or history orrelationships in only a few lines. Solid writing.Others have said it, but what the hell I will too...this film is aloving tribute to the '80's teen films of John Hughes including many ofthe implausibilities. It's a comedy that actually veers into somefairly sophisticated satire at a few points, plausibility isn't theissue here. Like the Hughes films, it isn't about what teens wouldactually do or say, but what we *wish* they would or what we wish wewould have in our own high school days. One thing. What John Hughes did in his films was work with real teenaged actors whereas Mr. Gluck has chosen to return to the old cliché ofhaving actors in their 20's play high schoolers and that is a mistake. The kids in the Hughes films *look* young and vulnerable and theviewers are reminded of that. When older actors are used something islost, that's all I'm saying.

Smart but a bit smart for its own good.

It's refreshing to see a teen movie that is actually for teenagers andis not diluted to appeal to young girls. Just like how it was in theeighties- and eighties films are referenced quite a bit in Easy A.The title is clever, witty, and has a bit of attitude. However, Easy Adoes not entirely live up to the promise of its title. It's anintelligent off-beat film for the most part but the director and writerkeep congratulating themselves on their wit and quirkiness so oftenthat the film begins to grate. There's also an unpleasant snarky toneto the whole proceedings. Olive (Emma Stone), our slutty protagonistwho is not really a slut, is frequently bitchy to pretty much everyother character, except her 'favourite teacher'(it's not a euphemismbut the film would be much funnier if it was). She has a massivesuperiority complex, using every excuse to show off her wit andpretentious intellect. Apparently this film is supposed to beindicative of our generation, and it is, in the sense that everybody isself-obsessed. Despite the protagonist being sour, Emma Stone brings abit of attitude to the film and perhaps indicates that Olive is just asself-absorbed as everybody else. The film's premise has parallels with 19th century American classic TheScarlet Letter, in which a woman is persecuted and forced to wear an Aas a symbol of her adultery, whilst the man is not punished at all. However the filmmakers seem to have got confused about what adulterymeans, as they keep saying that Olive is an adulterer whereas heractual sin is supposed sluttiness. The film's attempt to convey thereligious themes of the novel does not really pay off. I'm notreligious at all but I found the obsession with attacking religiouszealots rather sour and a distraction from a promising, albeitimplausible, comic premise. So, school report for this film: intelligent, but a big attitudeproblem.

A high-spirited, whip-smart high school sex comedy told from a female perspective, Easy A is The Scarlet Letter on laughing gas.

Felix Vasquez Jr. 2012-05-05 17:02:32

One of the most smug and obnoxiously self-aware films I've ever seen...

Bryant Frazer 2012-05-02 08:28:49

The whole affair is PG-13 toothless and TV slick - I kept feeling that the movie was insisting on its own embraceability, and I resisted.

Angelus2 2012-05-02 01:45:11

Easily not an 'A'

Olive decides that she's tired of being a 'Virgin' and makes up liesthat she has lost her virginity to a boy...But then she makes themistake of saying that she has slept with a fellow friend to help himfrom being bullied in school...and soon it seems that all the boys inschool want her to do the same.I thought the plot was quite intriguing from what I saw in the trailer,I thought that Olive was making up stories in order to get A's, but itwas not..Instead what I got was a lame comedy that does not know whatit wants to be. At first I thought Olive was quite clever, but shedoesn't seem to understand the repercussions of her actions. People tryto pass this off as intelligent...but I didn't see any of that. There are a few meagre laughs but its not for me...And I felt thatChristians were portrayed badly...I am not a Christian but why doesHollywood have to portray any group of people continuously throughstereotypes?

David Stratton 2012-04-29 18:03:27

A cut above the usual teenage romance thanks to the potent presence of Emma Stone, a young actor who looks a bit like a youthful Myrna Loy and who has a refined sense of comic timing.

Dan Lybarger 2012-04-29 07:58:57

As the title implies, 'Easy A' is a movie made by some smart people.

Easy A

I wanted to see this movie after watching the previews. It looked funny, and it really was. A bit unrealistic, but still funny. When Olive has a rumor started about her at school that she lost her virginity, she decides to let it go, she's actually getting noticed for once. But from there it just spirals as a few other people approach her for help with faking sex with her in return for giftcards. It boosts their popularity and keeps her noticed. However, after awhile it starts to get out of control and Olive wonders if she's done the wrong thing.Characters:Emma StonePenn BadgleyAmanda BynesThomas Haden ChurchPatricia ClarksonCam GigandetLisa KudrowMalcolm McDowellAlyson MichalkaStanley TucciI love Stanley Tucci, so I was so glad to see him in this movie. And he proved to be exceptionally funny as Olive's father. Emma Stone as Olive wasn't too shabby either. She had a dry wit and while not a completely believable teenager, she was still entertaining to watch. Amanda Bynes was annoying, but then again her character was meant to be that way so I suppose that means she did a good job. The other characters were ok, I didn't think her best friend really added anything except unneeded drama. For a plot it was funny. They openly borrowed from the Scarlet Letter for ideas and it was an interesting modern take on the story. I enjoyed the comedy aspect as well and the writers on the movie did a great job at making it funny. There might have been music in the movie, but honestly it was secondary and I didn't pay attention to it obviously. Definitely not important to the overall premise of the movie though so its not too much of a negative.Overall it was a good movie. Somewhat unrealistic at times but still funny. I enjoyed it.Review by M. Reynard 2011

"A is for Awesome"

I am a 20 year old girl and usually hate teen movies. This looked amusing from the commercials and I'm a big fan of Thomas Haden Church, so I decided to check it out. I've read the one-star reviews and I'm not sure why people thought this movie was boring or confusing. I admit, sometimes people don't understand what certain age groups find funny, and I think this movie is probably a good example of that. There is a LOT of sexual humor, innuendo, swearing and somewhat inappropriate situations in this movie. If you have any clue what it's about (a girl who accidentally gets a reputation as the school slut), you'll know that before buying it. It doesn't make it bad. In fact, quite the contrary, I thought this movie was hysterical. I thought the acting was great and this movie has actually made me like Emma Stone a lot. It's not for everyone, and it's not for youngsters, but for teens, it's a pretty decent movie. After one viewing, I intend to buy it.

Better than the average High School comedy

This is an enjoyable comedy marked by excellent performances and aslightly dark take on at the problems of High School life.Emma Stone is an unremarkable student who, by accident, gets thereputation for being a slut (She isn't). In some ways she is glad ofthe attention and plays along with the reputation. However this onlyleads to bigger problems.I've liked Stone in films such as "Zombieland" and "Superbad" and hereagain she plays her smart and sarcastic character well so that we havesympathy for her, even though we may not agree with all her decisions. There good performances from Thomas Haden Church and Lisa Kudrow asteachers. However Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson almost steal theshow as Stone's laid back parents. It looks like they had a ballplaying their parts.A small quibble is the casting of obviously twenty something actorssuch as Stone and Penn Badgley as High School students. As expected there is a share of hugging and learning towards the end ofthe film but that is only to be expected in this genre. It is awell-written and acted comedy that doesn't shove its message at theviewer too hard.
