Volunteering to drive his girl friends son home for Thanksgiving to Chicago from his boarding school in Georgia, little does Dutch expect the picaresque adventures in store for him. When a blunt, down-to-earth construction worker takes to the road with an insufferable twelve-year-old snob (desperately insecure under the surface) who doesnt approve of him in the least, quite a bit must happen before they can reach their destination as friends-- or, for that matter, get home at all.

Likable John Hughes comedy about a working man who does a road trip with apreppie snob. O'Neill is good fun as the title character.
Simply an extremely funny movie. One of my all time favorites. Ed O'neill is outstanding as the loony boyfriend. In addition the movie carries a good story and message. The ending was quite enjoyable as well.
I really like Dutch and watch it every year around thanksgiving. The young boy in this movie has to be the most obnoxious character I haveever seen portrayed by a child actor. However as the film went on it was great seeing him transform into a kidwith some heart and you warm up to him.
This review is from: Dutch [VHS] (VHS Tape) Ohhhh, this is a good one. The magnificent dueling performances by Ethan Embry and Ed O'Neill keep you glued to the screen like you're watching some crackerjack tennis match as the two battle back and forth. Ed O'Neill plays Dutch, a wealthy professional who feels more at ease wearing a softened pair of corduroy pants while drinking a beer and eating pretzels than he does seeing an opera or visiting the local country club. He falls for JoBeth Williams' character, Natalie, the divorcee to a rich, snobby businessman -- the same man who has managed to turn their son Doyle against her. Knowing that he's going to "pop the question" soon, Dutch volunteers to go to Doyle's ritzy boarding school in Georgia to bring him home via car for the Thanksgiving holiday. By doing so, he's hoping that they will have a unique chance to bond and that the boy will be more loving to his mother. Ohhhhh, Dutch....what were you thinking?? It's a nightmare!! From the moment they meet, the two are battling at every level. Ethan Embry is OUTSTANDING as Dobsy (errr, Dwayne...uhmm, no....Digby?). He plays the part of the spoiled rich brat to perfection. Their funny misadventures on the road home put them in all sorts of hilarious situations...from losing their car in a freak "accident" to hitchhiking a ride with some hookers to spending the night at a homeless shelter. It keeps getting funnier with every turn. Ed O'Neill takes Dutch to a whole new level with his calm, cool collectedness. He displays incredible control of his character and you'll just be cheering for the guy the whole time. The touching moments are when we see Doyle by himself, contemplating his attitude about life and his family. When he thinks no one is watching, Doyle is surprisingly sensitive and not so much the young adult who probably has a stock ticker in his closet...he's just a lost, struggling teenager who's as vulnerable as the rest of us. But the ultimate question is...will Dutch succeed in winning Doyle over? You'll just have to watch and see for yourself!
This movie is a great, I would even say fantastic movie. However, why is the price so high? I am sorry, nearly $70.00 for any DVD is theft. Whoever is producing this DVD should really make it affordable for everyone to buy and watch. I refuse to pay this, even though I would love to see the movie again. I do not want to set a precedent for these greedy producers.
DUTCH, in my opinion, is an excellent comedy about an unlikelyfriendship between a teenage boy and his mother's boyfriend. If you askme, Doyle (Ethan Randall) was an absolute snob! That kid really need tolearn respect! However, in my opinion, every mishap that occurred onhis journey home with Dutch (Ed O'Neill) was absolutely hilarious. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that everyone was ideally cast, the direction was flawless, and production design was spectacular, andthe performances were top-grade. Now, in conclusion, I highly recommendthis comedy about an unlikely friendship between a teenage boy and hismother's boyfriend.
Hughes, a man more prolific than Stephen King and less inspired than Aaron Spelling, has produced yet another forgettable project. This movie shouldn't even be allowed on planes.
This film sort of reminds me of the film "Over the Top" without thesweaty men arm wrestling and smacking themselves to psyche up for theirnext match. This is a very good thing. This film is also a comedy andnot an overly serious drama, sorry but a travel film such as thisshould be a comedy rather than a sappy drama. This film does get sappyhere and there, but not as bad as that one. The reason I compare thetwo is because it has two men going after a military kid on behalf ofthe mother. Granted the mother was dying in "Over the Top" I still findthe two similar. This one has O'Neil of "Married With Children" fame asthe new boyfriend of a mom. He offers to go pick up her son at amilitary type school so that they can bond. Well things of course donot go as planned as you end up with a bit of a crazy trip. Thoughnowhere near as crazy as the trip John Candy and Steve Martin had in"Planes, Trains, and Automobiles." The kid has a bit of a problem withhis mom and worships his dad, who is actually a bit of a stand offishtype, not really involving himself in his son's life other than thephone call promising he will be there for sure next time type. Thecomedy is rather good, but it suffers from its similarities to thesuperior "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" movie. You see some of thesame jokes, however they don't have the edge of that movie. Still, itis a tolerable enough flick though they kind of made fun of it on"Married with Children" as the wife spots the movie on sale at a reallylow price an she kind of dismisses it completely. However, I do notthink it is worthy of that kind of scorn as it has some good moments,"Over the Top" on the other hand deserves its scorn.
Dutch is a mix of other John Hughes movies, Planes, Trains & Automobiles,Uncle Buck and Home alone. Out of those movies, Dutch is at least funnierthan Uncle Buck. Although, nothing new, Dutch is still an enjoyable movie.Overall, very funny and entertaining. *** (out of four)
This review is from: Dutch (DVD) I love this movie! A young boy living at a Prep School does not want to go home to his Mother for Thanksgiving, so Dutch..the Mother's boyfriend goes to get the kid. The laughs are frequent as the two try to get along and make it home for Thanksgiving.
First there was Ed O'Neill the dramatic actor, then the comedian andnow the star. O'Neill has had a tough time finding new roles thataren't connected with Al Bundy in some way. If you saw the E! TrueHollywood Story on MWC you'd know that his scenes were actually re-shotwith another actor because the audience couldn't stop saying: "That'sAl Bundy!". Here he does an admirable job with basically a decentcharacter but still a few traces of the madness of Bundy. The kid, played by Ethan Randall (Or Embry, whatever) is the most snotty littlebrat I have ever seen in a movie and according to the trailer he'ssupposed to be like Bart Simpson. Not true. Bart Simpson occasionallygot out of hand but he was kind of decent underneath. Not so with thiskid. He is totally rotten and the 180 degree turn he makes at the endis totally unbelievable. He doesn't even seem to care that he almostkills a truck driver at one point. That scene is followed by aslap-sticky fight that tries to imitate the prattfalls of the twoburglars in "Home Alone". That undermines the seriousness which havegone before in my opinion. The boy's parents, played by JoBeth Williams and Chris McDonald areonly incidental so we don't really know anything about them except thatthe dad is even meaner than the kid. Because he is so mean, we aresupposed to feel sorry for the kid but for that to happen we must firstsympathize with him. I couldn't because he is so smarmy all throughthat the transformation he is supposed to have seems phony. And it'snot like some viewers have commented that he needs love. His mother isbasically a loving mother. The whole film is about who breaks downfirst, Dutch or the kid.In Denmark the movie was released under the title "Driving me Crazy"and that is pretty much a description of my state of mind when Iwatched it. The only reason to see it is because of O'Neill. If youwant to see Embry in a more positive light, check out him and O'Neillin the new "Dragnet". You could even tolerate him in "Vegas Vacation"but that was a stinker for another reason. To close I will say that Iwould like to see O'Neill in the type of role he had on "The SpanishPrisoner". He only had a small part but he made a big impression. Hisperformance here is good but he is undermined by the weakness of thestory.
The acting is only a little more uninspired than the screenplay, which is directed without shame or flair by Peter Faiman of Crocodile Dundee.
Great movie! Will never get old to me! I need to get it on DVD b/c the VHS I originally had it on is about worn out!
I had to go to Amazon to order the DVD because it's so difficult to find it in stores. I highly recommend picking it up. You won't be disappointed. The story was great and it came from a veteran director who gave us other terrific films like Home Alone and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
This review is from: Dutch (DVD) A friend of mine loaned me his VHS copy of this movie a couple years ago and I'd never even heard of it. I was a little skeptical at first, but I trusted his judgment based on previous referrals and so I watched it.The storyline is very engaging and for anyone who is dealing with 'uppity' teenagers full of attitude, this one will really hit home. This film is pretty excellent across the board. It's certainly the best work I've ever seen Ed O'Neill do and that's for sure. He just shines in his role here. The movie is full of surprises so I'll not say anymore about the details, but the writing, acting and directing here are top notch as far as humor goes. NOTE: There are several lines of dialogue that you will make part of your permanent vocabulary after watching this film similar to the way you adopted lines out of Caddyshack into your everyday world. To give you just a tiny taste of what's waiting for you, Ed's character steps out of a truck stop restaurant after a hearty breakfast and belches rather loudly prompting the line, "Ahhhhh... nothing burps like bacon!"You've been warned.
The characters were finely written, I thought, although it may not seem soat first. They seem to be caricatures just to make you laugh. But thereare reasons for the way each of them behave, though they are not alwayssaidstraight out for the usual movie-going public to catch....Someone herewrotethat he thought that Dutch was the one who was brutal and immature. Idon'tthink he was acting that way for no reason at all, but he purposely setoutto get on Dutch's nerves. And maybe he *was* a little uncouth by nature(perhaps from the way he was raised?). But unlike Doyle, he didn't thinkitwas beneath him to be himself, even when surrounded by the hoity-toitysociety he now finds himself in. They both seemed to learn from eachotherand become better people when their personalities clashed.
Hughes has written, directed and/or produced so many of these films by now that perhaps we can even forgive him for beginning to repeat himself.
Every time I was flipping the channels and Dutch was on I would end up staying on the channel and watching it. I hated Married with Children so I was very suprised that I like this movie.
This is my FAVORITE movie. You will find yourself laughing out loud. Ed O'Neill is great in this film.
This movie was SOOOOO funny! In the very beginning it doesn't seem like it will be very funny but that is not the case. The story was really cute and Ed O'Neill made this movie! He was so perfect for this character. The movie got more & more hilarious and I was laughing non-stop towards the end of the movie. All the actors/actresses were excellent. Also, this is one of the few that I could watch over & over.
