The story begins with Goku, who seeks out upon his adoptive grandfather Grandpa Gohans dying request to find the great Master Roshi and gather all seven Dragon Balls. Of which he has one, in order to prevent the evil Lord Piccolo from succeeding in his desire to use the Dragon Balls to take over the world. And Gokus quest is to obtain the mystical Dragonballs before Piccolo does.

We have taken some photos of "Dragonball Evolution". They represent actual movie quality.
Well, quickly, I hope Fox sees the huge reaction this has gotten, evenif negative. It shows the number of fans who LOVE this series, EVENAFTER THIS DISASTER, and their level of enthusiasm for the franchiseacross all cultures and ages (I never got into anime and comics, maybeI was a weird kid, but this series turned me around at age 22-23. Itwas for this show ONLY, still couldn't get into other anime, they allseemed to suck compared to Dragonball to me). When I'd get home fromwork, couldn't help but to watch the recording and follow the story, hell, we'd watch this as adults AT work during breaks, allraces/ages... love it's depth, the characterizations of the charactersetc., such a beautiful story, even if a cartoon, in an ugly world...the lead up the fighting, then the fights, ridiculous). So if Fox issmart, I hope they see the potential of what a movie about Dragonball Zdone right could be... along par with Star Wars and Avatar, I mean. Now the adult in me thinks this... and I challenge my fellow DB and DBZfans to answer this... how would you make it as cool as Star Wars orAvatar? Do you go with the 3 foot hair for Goku? A poof of smoke forcapsule corp cars? Jurassic Park like flying dragons? You know what, Isay yeah to almost all that except maybe tone down Goku's hair. Avatarhad allot of fantasy but indoctrinated real/believable characters likethe scientist and soldiers into the movie and fantasy. The tree nearthe end was awesome, they could have a huge dragon, with a dark sky andlightning right after being a real life sort of setting, and had usbuying it.I think Fox just didn't have the balls to risk kids who maybe did notgrow up on the show (though I am seeing many have in the constantreruns) liking a movie they thought they could not relate to, being tooweird, but a great story is a great story, great characters, story ofgood vs evil etc will always stand the test of time... and too manyolder folk would have buoyed a good adaptation as well.Movie needs to be long or a trilogy too, along lines of LOTR and HarryPotter.OK, geek out, back to the real world. Just do it FOX people./rant
from the start of the movie, you can tell were most of the money went.I don't want to say this is an abomination, because there are worse, but, even as a movie I can't say its in any way good. The dialog is alittle corny, the names are bad, and things feel a bit rushed andcrammed. And if you do know the DB series, your gonna hate it.Honestly, if your going tot he movies, I'd say go see Fast and Furious. But then again, I guess its a matter of taste. The only thing I wishabout this movie, is, it was the kind of bad that made it fun to watch, but sadly, the production tried to hard to make it a good movie withall the special effects and stuff they could afford. I think if yourgonna cash in on Japanese pop-culture, leave it to the Japanese to doit. But then again, there are some anime/mangas that just cannot belive action. Anyone remember Fist of the North Star? Its a lose-losesituation for live action anime movies not made in japan. Don't believeme, check out Deathnote live action or prince of tennis and compare tothe original source material, and then watch DBE and FotNS and compare. But to FotNS credit, it was true to the source, at least somewhat
This movie made me so angry, I joined IMDb for the sole reason ofwriting this crappy review. This was the worst movie I have ever seen.I left the theater very, very depressed.Every single person in involved in this movie should be ashamed ofthemselves. The acting was horrible, the dialogue sucked, the story was as staleand rehashed as... I don't know... day old hashbrowns? Look, eitherthey put together a team that can do this movie justice, or they getthe people that did FFVII Advent Children and Resident Evil: Extinctionto do a CGI version.Bottom line, this movie was, from start to finish, DEPRESSING AS HELL.The original cartoon (especially the original Dragon Ball series) wasincredibly funny and upbeat. I never saw Goku getting put down orpicked on.This is just typical Hollywood thinking that if they water everythingdown for the lowest common denominator they'll generate the mostrevenue. Hopefully the next team to undertake a project of thismagnitude will give it the RESPECT it deserves and not give us moreD-list Hollywood GARBAGE.
LoL, OK, so here is my revue on this movie. Seeing as Dragonball andDragon Ball Z were a big part of my early childhood, I was taken withnostalgia and decided, "hey, why not.". Let me tell you, this movie isfunny as balls, more specifically, funny in the way you laugh whilewatching those old b-rated horror movies on VHS in them moldy boxes youfound in your mama's attic. The one liners are as cheesy as DavidCarusso's from CSI, and the special effects team seemed to also betaken by nostalgia and decided to go all retro. But then you realizeit's the same special effects team in charge of the original MightyMorphin Power Ranger special effects. No jokes, check it out. The bitwhere Goku (SPOILER ALERT!) animorphs into that big foot looking thing, you realize the costume specialists probably got drunk and totallyforgot to fabricate a legit looking costume, so (ANOTHER SPOILER ALERT)they bus'd it down to the 24/7 walmart and bought the 20$ skunk apecostume three sizes too big on the sales rack mid November. Regardless,I was a happy camper while watching it, worth a few chuckles. I alsohappen to be fried out of my mind. Holy cow. Sucks how you cant swear.Go watch the movie and share your thoughts.
this is a real bad movie, I Saw the movie on the internet. I was verybig fan. i was looking forward to it when it was announced that therewill be a real life action movie of the cartoon i liked so much.however, this movie was a real disappointing for me. but that doesn'treally bothers me. what bothers me the most is the fans, who are sayingto be disappointed in casting rather then to be disappointed in themovie it self. because there is no line to it as it was in thedragonball series. people saying to be disappointed because goku isn'tChinese looking, he doesn't look Chinese in the anime either. a classicexample from Asian looking people is general tao, look at different. sopeople goku isn't Japanese, he comes from another freaking planet. youpeople are really stupid to think like that. i guess you moraans thinkits a Japanese cartoon he should be plaid by a Japanese figure. this was a terrible movie, so if you ever have to post your comments isuggest you comment the movie and not why goku doesn't look Chinese orJapanese.
By and large I think, Dragonball Evo was alright. It wasn't groundbreaking, or necessarily a mirror of the original Dragonball series. It's quality wasn't exactly stellar either, though.I'm an artist, and a fan of the Dragonball universe. I wouldn't want tomake a movie that was a mirror of what has already been made. That'd belike me trying to recreate the Dragonball comics. In terms of making amovie based on something as extensive as Dragonball, there aresacrifices that need to be made. There are over 100 eps of the originalDB universe, and that needed to be shaved into a single movie. All the base elements are there. Roshi is a perv, Goku loves his foodand rigorous training at the hands of Roshi, Bulma has capsules (whichwas her big thing in the original series), there ARE capsules, Yamchais a desert bandit, Grampa Gohan raises Goku, etc etc. The baseelements are all there, and the director deserves some credit for evenmaking that effort. Not every director tries that hard. Now, do I agree with all the liberties with the characters made? Not atall. Roshi was a hoot, but wasn't a bent over OLD man. Chow Yun Fat dida brilliant job with one of the series' most memorable characters, butthere were some aesthetic changes that didn't sit right with me. Also,no Krillin. Yamcha, but no Krillin? Dang.Ironicly enough, Dragonball Evo maintains the history of pacing issuesrenounced throughout the Dragonball universe. Except for episodes fullof staring and gruntings, it was lightning fast the whole way through. It even felt rushed by the end.Riddled with flaws, and by no means the perfect take on the Dragonballuniverse, it was still kind of entertaining. :) It has all of the baseelements necessary to make a Dragonball movie, and it's own uniquetwist of the story. They did alright, I think. :) Now they need totrain their movie making skills to make a better movie. :) Train at 100times gravity!
More concerned with recruiting the testosterone troubled boys of today than it is rewarding fans of yesteryear.
[Chow's] hamminess doesn't make Dragonball Evolution make more sense, but it's a great way to cope with an otherwise inexplicable kitschfest.
First of all, I am a DBZ fan. And unlike most of you idiots that wantto belittle anything that has to do with dragon ball manga, I take itwith a grain of salt. The basic problem with the movie is that nomatter how hard you try you can't cram 130 episodes into a 90 minmovie. But all of you seem to think that it is possible... right. And,oh yeah, I totally forgot... HOW COULD YOU LEAVE OUT KRILLIN!!!!! WHATWERE THEY THINKING... I mean it would be so realistic to have a midgetplaying the strongest human on Earth!(s/n.. for those of you that arejust bashing to bash... Krillin is only 3 feet tall) Oh yeah... Yamchadidn't fight...because we all know how much of a fighter he was in DB!No Puar...GEEEZ.. cause a shape shifting cat would be believable. ( Ididn't leave out oolong... just felt no need to comment because all hedoes in DB is try to scare Goku... and then promplty gets his a$$whipped) Although I could go on for hours about how retarded everyoneof you are (knowing you will own the DVD) My real point is... IT ISWHAT IT IS... you spent your money to go see it... and there will be asequel, and you will go see it.. because we are human and curious.. sobefore you start an internet petition.. don't be gay sparky! Don't beGay! For the review.... its an adapted movie that fanboys will hate..because.. they're fanboys... for the rest of the world... its a movie..you will like it or you won't, End of story. So grow up, and move on.
its a disgrace it doesn't understand the premise of dragon ball whoeverwrote it clearly didn't read or watch dragon ball literally an abortionof a film if u enjoyed it your wrong.Goku doesn't like fighting what is up with this film!!unfortunately not even spike could save this film if your consideringwatching this just go watch the program i was angry watching this filmi sat shaking with fury never watchlet's pray there's never a sequel never watch ever the following wouldbe better: history channel, reading, exercise, music, the internet, literally anything
I went to see the movie today and i loved it!! I have been a fan foryears now and when i heard this movie was coming out i couldn't wait!!I know some people have been giving this film bad comments because its'not like the series', well I'm sorry but obviously its not going to be'exactly' like the series, for one thing it was a cartoon! There is noway Bulma was going to have big green hair and Goku was going to havemassive spiky hair. I think Akira and the other directors did afantastic job. The storyline was brilliant and it did follow thecartoon series storyline for the majority of the film. And when Gokudid the Kamahamaha wave i was so excited i was practically screaming!lol And Chow Yun-Fat did a brilliant job of portraying Roshi includingliking the dirty mags lol The one thing i will say i was disappointedin was that Krillin wasn't in it, but i can live with that (plus hemight be in the sequel). The fight scenes were also really good and they managed not to put inany of those noises where the characters sound like they areconstipated lol They also did a good job of showing the characters Kienergy around their bodies.Im sorry if there are fans of DBZ that think it didn't follow thestoryline or whatever but there is only so much live-action versionscan do and considering what the directors had to accomplish i thinkthey did a brilliant job. Also i read how strict Akira Toriyama waswhile making the movie, he wanted it to be right and i don't think hewould have gone through with it if he thought it wasn't. I for one can not wait for the sequel, so DBZ fans please watch it andthen make your decisions :) Just because it doesn't match some peopleshigh standards doesn't mean u wont enjoy it! KAMAHAMAHA!!!
Ok. This movie was good to me, but if your a fan of the anime you might not like it. A few things were wrong in this movie that they should've seen. First of all where the hell is Krillin? He was there from the beginning, and I can't beleive they missed that! They never explained that Goku is a being called a Sayien, only saying that he was sent to earth as Ozaru(a giant monkey) in a human body, and that on his eighteenth birthday he would be ready to awaken. So where the hell is his tail huh? The Kamehameha wave sucked in this movie. Why the hell was he flying through the air with it? Overall good to watch one time around, but anime fans would not really like it.
Let me start by saying am 14 years old and since i was like five istarting watching dragonball, i really liked the show and when theyannounced 20th century fox was making a movie i got really excitedbecause i liked the cast, (No i wasn't mad because Goku wasn't Asianbecause Goku is an alien not a Japanese guy) the posters and thedirector but when the trailer was released i was laughing my ass off athow bad it was and i noticed krillin wasn't there(i liked the cast butthe main characters were in it so i thought krillin was in the casttoo) so i lost my interest in watching it but finally i bought ityesterday for like 2 bucks so i didn't have good expectations butreally the movie wasn't that bad in fact it was OK i mean everybodytried their best the acting was good, the director did a good job i hadthat feel like i was watching dragonball, the effects were OK, shenglong and the dragon balls looked awesome and piccolo looked really goodbut the dialogue was horrible it felt like a was watching a streetfighter movie and the major changes weren't good like krillin and theoozaru (that was the worst part of the movie the oozaru wasn't even bigit was just like a really big chimp) but really this movie deservesmore that it gets and also i gived this a 10 because i wanted the movieto have a higher score common this should have at least a 5 or a 6 nota 3.2 (so i would of give this a 6)
I'm a huge fan of the original Anime and Manga versions of the Dragonball franchise, and if the fans reading this are like me, nothing said about this movie will keep them away. That being said, this movie is a miserable failure. But I'll be fair, and give proper dues, as I break it down by category.Story: (con)I can't completely dismiss the film's story as crap because it is based around a story that I love, but the film's version shares nothing with the original other than character names, terminology, and a VERY broad semblance of the original plot. The 14 plus year plotline of the anime has been condense and jumble into one film (with possible sequels). It was an attempt to make the story more open for non-fans of the anime/ manga and reinvent the story for this generation- they failed.Characters: (con)You will definitely notice the absence of several main characters- Krillin, Tien, Chaotzu, Kami, Popo, and all of the anthropomorphic animal characters just to name a few. The characters that are in the story are misrepresented terribly, different in personality and attitude Goku is now an unpopular highschooler that is picked on and struggles to refrain himself from hurting the bullies. The naive and gentle nature he had in the anime is gone. Bulma is fairly close to capturing the arrogant, prissy attitude- but she is now a gun slinging rough and tumbler. Yamcha is still a desert bandit- but not a fighter and has an attitude like a surfer bum. Roshi is close, not quite enough of a lech, but a decent portrayal (despite the fact that Gohan- his student is inexplicably much older than Roshi himself). Piccolo was also portrayed in a decent manner- but he has far too little screen time for a main antagonist. Chi-Chi shows glimpses of her dominant attitude, but the relationship with Goku is completely different than in the original story. Also the Namekians (not even known about in the original Dragonball franchise until Z) are portrayed as evil, human haters. And the Ozaru, the saiyan's ape transformation, is now a demon minion of Piccolo trapped in Goku's body- and he is nowhere near large enough when he makes his appearance.Special Effects: (neutral)The effects in the film aren't bad, but they don't really fit the tone of the film. They are the kind of effects that would fit well in a full 3-d film (think Final Fantasy: Spirits Within) but for a live action they appear cartoon. Intermittent slow motion similar to the Matrix is used through-out the film much to the film's detriment. Also the Ki engery waves look to wispy and are constantly referred to as "Air Bending" -(Avatar ripoff).Acting: (meh)With the exception of the dope playing Yamcha, the acting is decent. At least I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt- given the poorly written dialogue of the film, I'm not sure acting legend could have done any better.Other botches include the Eternal Dragon (who is named Shenlong instead of Shenron), and the real world setting rather than the alternate Earth of the original Dragonball.Actually the only thing the film accomplishes well is humor. Even with the distraction of everything bad, the film provides a good giggle or two. And to put some minds at ease- the slight change in hair styles isn't that bad.I know that all sounds harsh, but its true.
This movie exceeded my expectations completely. I never thought thatthey would be able to cram that much info into practically 80 minutes. They did a great job. Sure the script was a little bad and Yaumcha waskind of not we expected but it felt like a DragonBall movie. ~Spoiler~ Goku going to school and actually living somewhat of a normal life wasa unique and gutsy approach to the intro of the movie but I think itfit nicely. Chi Chi still lived in a castle yet it looked like it wasin the suburbs and Roshi lived in the city but at least it wassomething different.~/spoiler~Everyone who complains about how you should never see this movie shouldjust not talk. Being closed minded really doesn't help and it reallyshows how ignorant people can be.Sure it may not follow the story at all, but its still a DragonBallmovie no matter what. As I recall The Tree of might doesn't fit intothe DragonBall plot either so let it go. Justin Chatwin was an amazingactor as Goku. I'm glad they chose him then say someone like JustinTimberlake or Jon Heder. He fits the profile well. Before I even watched the movie I told myself. Its not going to fitinto the series so just keep an open mind. I did and I enjoyed it. Ithink the Final battle could have been longer but it was still verygood. One thing I didn't like. The clothing for Goku. The pants for hisuniform could have been tighter as they went down. -FOR THE PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN IT- See it. Keep and open mind andenjoy the movie. Thats all I have. Thanks for reading my review, its myfirst one.
When i first heard about the idea of a dragonball movie i thought itwould be a flop to be honest, because you just can't capture what thecartoon could! although as time went on i could see a vision of a greatmovie if it was on a high budget but i was to learn that it was theopposite. From within the first 5 minutes of the movie i could tell where it washeaded and seemed continue going downhill throughout the movie. thefirst scene is a fighting scene between him and his grandfather gohan.from watching the action displayed in this scene you would understandwhy it hurts to watch being a dragonball fan (of the cartoon). all ofthe cartoon series' were high impact, full on, fast paced, heavy and aone of kind martial arts fighting style.. from this first scene.. itwas disgraceful. was a terrible sort of elegant slow (when i say slow imean sooo slow) martial arts fighting action. The matrix seemed fastedwhen they were in slow-mo. made me sad :(Goku in the movie was an okay performance.. could of been better butalso could of been a lot worse. Goku's top characteristics are thirstfor battle, his ever always hungry stomach, his childlike personality, his hair and his strength. in the movie they touched on his hair andhis strength. Goku was the typical teenager in the movie and thisdidn't work for me as Goku is always the childlike grown up and in themovie he gets bullied!! I don't think goku should of gone to school inthe movie and if he did the school like vision should of been a lotdifferent.Bulma's character had all the right personality traits but bulma withguns??? huh? shouldn't she be smart one as well? she seemed like a twitto me. The only thing i noticed about ChiChi was what was on her chestto be honest!I thought that Yamcha's character personality was probbaly the thickestwhen it comes to the cartoon but he wasn't even a fighter?! huh?Piccolo's character had potential.. but wrong makeup department! helooked like a tool to be honest. as soon as his face came onto thescene the cinema erupted in laughter.. the funniest bit of the moviewas his face. Piccolo's character was never really developed.. hedidn't do anything wrong.. well really anything that wrong. Maybe heshould of killed more innocent people? He just wasn't seen as a threator a big bad guy.in a nutshell, poor action, cheesy jokes weren't funny or slightlyenjoyable, the romantic teenage love wasn't necessary, Yamcha wasn'tever a fighter! actors didn't seem to understand there roles very well, poor selection of characters, poor storyline and writers.. sorry outthere all you fans but that's the absolutely nicest way i could putit.. they left it off for there to be a sequel.. so i don't believe itshould continue but perhaps have another shot at doing it from adifferent director and crew.. perhaps bring in the old writers of thecartoon. try and bring in all those who worked on the cartoon and makea really good film because there is great potential. perhaps tackle onthe Z side of dragonball. Vegeta/Raditz Vs Goku main story lines?
I knew all along that this movie was vaguely based on the actual storyof Dragonball. The reason why I went to go see it was to laugh at it.The feeling I had going in was, "Oh man! They made a movie out of ananime with flying people who shoots beams and fight really reallyfast!? I must see it just to laugh at its cheesiness" yet... It washard to even laugh at it cause it was just generally bad. There are afew quotes and some visual effects that I found really funny, but theylasted only a few seconds and that is all. It was just so bad that itwas hard to make fun of it, or laugh at any of its parts. If anyonewants to watch it, rent it, it is not worth the price of watching it intheaters..... What am I talking about, just don't watch it. Seriously,if someone watches this in the theaters, it's equivalent to giving ahomeless person some money and watching him/her go buy alcohol.
if there is a grade lower than F, im happily will grade this ***** movie at that grade. the director, producer, actors and actress for this ***** Dragon Ball: Evolution should be ashamed for what they have done. James wong, u r totally idoit. thanx for ruining the great masterpiece of Akira Toriyama.
Dragonball Evolution... Where do I begin? First off, I am a huge DragonBall fan, I own all the episodes for the original series, Z, and GT,seen them in both English and Japanese, viewed every movie, special, and OVA. Now that I've probably diminished my online reputation by thatstatement, let's talk about this terrible film.First off, when I heard that a film adaptation of my favoriteanime/manga was going to be live-action, I had low expectations, theonly way DB (especially Z) could be pulled off is a completely CGfeature. And then... came the casting, much more displeased. Nothingmore Dragon Ball-esquire than Goku going to high school, eh? Of coursewe do have the optimists, actually believing in some way that this filmcould be good. And then, the trailer. Oh, that trailer. When Ki lookslike airbending, we have a problem. Seven mystics created theDragonballs, eh? Oh, not the Nameks? Alright. Bulma using dual guns, with only one blue bang. Tomb Raider joke, anyone? Capsules now useCybertronian technology apparently, and of course, the most epic lineGoku could say, something we absolutely know Son Goku himself wouldsay, "I'm not ready for this".Then came the movie, which astounded me. I had such low expectationsfor the film, it really surprised me when the film was worse than I hadinitially expected it would be. If not succeeding as an adaptation, Ithought it would have at least served as a mindless action flick, andeven at that it fails. The acting is horrid, the script is flimsy, thescreenplay is corny, the effects look 8-10 years old, the music iseasily forgettable, and the climax is so short and unsatisfying thatyou might need to watch Street Fighter and Super Mario Bros. to get thebad taste out of your mouth. I had hoped for little things, like theKamehameha being at least somewhat cool, fail. Piccolo beinginteresting to watch, fail. Well, they probably at least make theOozaru and Shenron look epic! ...Oh. Are you serious? Hulk is biggerthan the Oozaru! Shenron is... speechless... and brown... and small...and with rejuvenating red breath... Big Red product placement, maybe? But the worst part of the film was Yamcha, no contest. What is he doingthere? Where's Krillin, for one? And I cannot believe the film hints ata sequel, oh its there, people. Dragonball 2: Reborn. Excited?Exhilirated? I'm looking forward to having my childhood sodomized witha rusty spear. I hope other Dragon Ball fans out there are too.
From looking at some of the reviews on here, I will keep mine simple aspeople seem obsessed one way or another. I am reviewing this film onthe credits.1. Relation to the original series. 2. Quality of script 3. quality ofactors/actresses/acting 4. quality of effects 5. Final product. This film bears two relations to the original. The characters and theDragonballs. There is nothing else to link the two. This is so sad whenyou consider how much they had to work with and all they could producewas this. The characters also bear little resemblance to their animepredecessors. None of them do what they are supposed to do, except ChiChi, who didn't do much anyway. Where's Roshi's turtle shell. Why doesBulma carry several fully automatic weapons? And why is Yamcha now aladies man? To their credit though, Roshi's behaviour soon after heappears is very accurate even if it is short lived. The script for this film is its downfall. It's just awful. The writershave tried to fit too much into a short period of time. This filmneeded to be 2.5 to 3 hours long to even come close to allowing all thecharacters to be fleshed out. Attention should have been paid toTransformers when they were making this film. If you want to make afilm based on a TV series, as those who watched it, not a bunch ofsuits that are paid to watch it and come up with a story. Many peoplewho enjoyed the show could have given suggestions throughout the wholemovie making experience.AS bad as the film was, it doesn't take anything away from the actorsthemselves. They did the best they could with the tools they had. Ifyou ask a builder to build you a house out of sticks, don't complainwhen it falls over. This film had all the effects of an 80's movie. Think of A Nightmare onElm Street 3: Dream Warriors and the scene where the Freddie battlesthe kid in the wheelchair. That's the level of effects in this film. And I will leave the dragon, Shenron, so you come to your ownconclusions. I don't want to seem prejudiced. This film lands not just way off the mark for a spin off movie, it's inanother continent. They should never have made it if it was going to beso lack lustred. It could have been done with a comedy element, whichwould have saved it, but no. They even try to throw in romance, but youhave only seen the characters for an hour so who cares. Why so manyinconsistencies from the original anime series? For example, Roshi doesnot live on an island. All these little details could have beenincluded with another hour of film time. No one wants to watch an 88minute film nowadays. Its just not value for money. Some may think that1 out of 10 is harsh, but when they made such a hash of what could havebeen another Transformers, its all it deserves.
