THE STORY:Freddy Prinze Jr. (She's All That, Summer Catch, etc) and Julia Stiles (Ten Things I Hate About You, Save the Last Dance, O, etc.) play Al and Imogen who through a series of flashbacks and weird cut-aways recount their on-again/off-again romance. Overall, deep down inside the story is probably pretty nice - IF YOU CAN TOLERATE THE STORYTELLING TO THE VERY END.In sum, the countless flashbacks and seemingly pointless cut-aways will leave you confused, frustrated and ultimately very bored!!! I personally stopped watching the movie about 40 minutes into the rental. My fiancé managed to make it to the end but even she said the movie "was not that good" and "was not worth the rental" (well, it's a paraphrase as a little more colorful language was used) citing the same reasons (confusing jumps from scene-to-scene, etc).Overall, I think this movie suffers from the "promising story, BAD execution" syndrome.THE DVD Features:A little sparse on DVD special features the DVD also includes these:1.Billy Myers "It All Came Down To You" music video: An alright feature, but not alone worth the DVD2.A "making of the music video" special: a 45 second video set to the song. 45 seconds??? Geez, what was the point???3.Trailers for two other movies, "She's All That" (starring male lead Freddie Prinze Jr.) and "Ten Things I Hate About You" (starring female lead Julia Stiles).THE VERDICT:In all, it's safe for me to say that if you've never seen this you're probably better off saving your money and renting/buying some better movies to watch (such as the two other movies featured in the trailers section). In all, unless you don't mind the non-sensical storytelling you're off probably - most definitely - better off spending your time and money on another movie.Apparently, I wasn't the only who felt this way about the movie as I remember it not lasting more than a month in the theatres before it was yanked when it first came out.Recommendation to Take A Pass and Rent/Buy Something Better...
I love this movie. It is a modern day romantic comedy that anyone will enjoy watching.
ok, i was reading the other reviews (most GOOD) and I was thinking :Are these people out of their minds! " This is honestly the WORST movie I have ever seen! The story makes no sense, the acting is horrible, and it is dragged out for WAY too long of a time! I would not reccomend this to anyone, considering the funniest moment of this "romantic-comedy" as when someone told an 11-year old Julia Stiles she "kissed like a fish" and followed by throwing a basketball at her. This moie is just too ridiculous for words. If you don't believe me, attempt to watch it and find out for yourself!
I'll be honest right off the bat: I do NOT like Freddie Prinze,Jr. I have never found him appealing in his looks or acting talent. This aside, I still try to give him the benefit of the doubt, especially when it is a boring rainy day and the video store is out of "Magnolia", and "The Hurricane." This was not the movie to watch in order to give him a second chance. It is the typical cookie cutter teen fare at it's worst. I know that all of these movies basically have the same plot points, but at least some ("Never Been Kissed" in my opinion) provide some fun, light entertainment while getting us to the obvious happy ending. This does not. The path this movie takes us on consists of: porn star roomates, drunk college kids making friends with spiders, and an attempt at "romantic exorcism" by downing a bottle of your lost loved ones shampoo to name a few. I really didn't know if we were supposed to be laughing with this movie, or at this movie because for a comedy I wasn't laughing at all. No light, fun entertainment was to be had down this road to predictability. If you are a hard core Freddie Prinze, Jr. fan odds are you will find this passable, but if you don't care for him, or just find him to be okay, pass this up. Once again Freddie: Thumbs down to you.
OK; to start- this is not like anything Freddie has EVER done. It is romantic, sweet, undoubtedly the best, and just about flawless...wait a second. Am I talking about DOWN TO YOU or Freddie's girlfriend Sarah Michelle Gellar? Anyway, this is not like any of Freddie's previous projects- it does not have a man with a hook, another man with a hook, has no planes, and does not have Usher. Most people compare DOWN TO YOU to SHE'S ALL THAT, but the two are nothing alike. If you are looking for a comedy/romance, do NOT get DOWN TO YOU. I did not laugh once the entire movie! But if you want something that will make your date hold you tight or make you smile and cry, this is the film- TRUST ME!
This movie was really good. It does get boring with all the narration, but it's a good inspiring love story. Makes you want to kiss the one you love and if you don't have someone to go find that perfect someone. This movie was funny and very romantic. This is a good choice in movies if you like "chick flicks" because this is definately one of those. Freddie Prinze Jr. and Julia Stiles are great together and it adds some charisma and spark to the characters, which totally makes up for the others in the movies who performaces weren't as stunning. This is a great pick!
What can I say about a great movie. Even thought it was a "ckick flick" I surprisingly enjoyed it. It's a great and realilistic story about love.
Freddie Prinze Jr and Julia Styles star in a teen-targeting romanticcomedy. Against a backdrop of life at college in New York, a coupletake it in turns to describe the highs and lows of first love.Coming off the back of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and 10Things I Hate About You, both Prinze and Styles were in the ascendantin 2000. First-time writer-director Isacsson's film doesn't take eitherof them into radically new territory, but with its tricksy structureand high cute quotient, Down To You does prove an efficient romanticcomedy driven by charismatic performances by two of Hollywood's mostattractive adolescents.Told largely in flashback, lovers Al (Prinze) and Imogen (Styles) takeit in turns to describe how they met, partied and parted. The son of aTV chef (former Fonzie Winkler), straight-laced Al's love for artyImogen follows the usual honeymoon-boredom-infidelity arc, but Isacssonemploys a sort of cut and paste technique, scenes from the early stagesof their relationship segueing into scenes from its end.The screenplay, with its pithy one-liners, split screens and to-cameraasides, clearly aims for an ironic, knowing cool. It doesn't alwayswork, and some of the best moments actually have little to do with theplot at all: a prolonged fantasy sequence involving a reality cookeryshow is unexpectedly effective, as is a sub-plot focusing on Al'sroom-mate-turned-porn-star Monk (Orth). Finally though, it's a filmbuilt around its stars and if, towards the end, Down To You does beginto stumble, Prinz and Styles prove more than capable of bringing itback to its feet.Verdict: An enjoyable and, in terms of style, unexpectedly imaginativeteen-friendly romantic comedy. Prinz and Styles are solid andattractive, and though Isacsson's screenplay occasionally overreachesitself, a quality cast ensure watch ability is high.
I expected this movie to be kind of hackneyed to begin with, butthe overall package of "Down to You" was beyond my worst expectations.Budding young starts are thrown in haphazardly as sex, drugs, and alcoholtake center stage. The whole film is an insult to my age bracket -- saveyour money on this one.
Ok, I didn't like this movie at all. I watched it with high expectations, expecting a light, funny, happy romantic comedy. However, with all the narration I kind of lost interest. When it was over, quite honestly, I was like, "Was there a point?" Despite all the main characters' struggles, it seems like nothing dramatic or exciting happens. Its just kind of a story of the ups and downs of a troubled relationship, which is definately nothing worth making a movie about! There was simply nothing that made "Down to You" stand out from any other romantic comedy in my eyes.
This movie has a great, and largely realistic storyline. The female leadisplayed charmingly and convicingly by Julia Stiles (herself a talented andrising star)and the whole cast provides a cross-section of some standardarchetypes found in contemporary college settings.Worth seeing for any 20-something in any type of relationship...
This is an awful mess, so bad it's hard to sit through for more than fiveminutes. I guess this film was supposed to be "quirky," but it just comesout as a muddled mess. There are no laughs, the couple at the center of thestory is boring in the extreme, the acting is pretty awful (Julia Stiles hasbeen good in some other movies, but not here), and half the time it doesn'teven make much sense. If this isn't the worst movie I've ever seen, it'spretty close to it.
Because of all the teen-hype, I was planning on never seeing this movie.Luckily, I ended up renting it and loved every minute of it! As it says on the video-cover, "Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Julia Stiles shine!" After seeing it, I took the movie to be about two very mature human-beings having a very mature relationship around friends who were anything but mature. The ending, by the way, is wonderful, I love Barry White! (You'll have to see it to get it...)I felt a little bad for Selma Blair's acting résumé, though. She plays a highly promiscuous porn-star.Julia Stiles is always amazing, so it was no surprise that she was great in this film. Her acting abilities are incredible. Freddie Prinze surprised me. I'm not one of those screaming fans of his, and never really liked the "teen-ie" type movies he was doing, so I was quite pleased to discover that this wasn't just a teen-flick.I'd say, in the beginning, before I saw it, it seemed like a movie that would attract tons of "first-date" couples. You know the ones: 5th graders-through-Freshmans in High School. But after seeing it, I think that college couples and young-couples in their 20's might benefit more from seeing "Down To You".It gives you a more realistic idea of what makes a relationship work than most of the romantic comedies today do.This is a really sweet movie. But not too sweet. Guys will like it, too. :)
I am well aware that many critics have refered to 'Down To You' as a clichèd romantic comedy, that "wasn't even saved by it's star studded cast", and was a let down from miramax.WELL I BEG TO DIFFER! This is the perfect example of an indie film.'Down to You' is the best most originally presented romantic comedy I have seen in a long long time. The dialogue was witty and having the actors talking to the audience made you feel as though you knew them. You love them too, it's like a realtionship sometimes you think "how could you have done that!" but mostly you just want to see what happens.I really think it perfectly captures a real relationship with some surreal elements that makes it interesting to watch. The filming techniques were also extremely effective you feel immersed in the story but yet are aware that you're not part of it. I thought it was really great ... it's not like other teen movies; granted some parts are slightly clichèd but the whole of the movie surprised me and I wasn't even sure whether they would actaully end up together... do they? You'll have to watch this stunningly artistic movie to find out! :)
Overall, the movie was bad. The plot was not well developed and don't evenget me started on the moral aspects of this flick.Yet the movie offered three or four moving scenes. I found it romantic whenshe danced for him at the rhythm of "their song;" I suffered for them whenshe confessed her infidelity, and I was emotionally touched at the finalscene in the park. I really was.To me, Hollywood is very good at showing the romantic side of love, eventhough they don't know squat about all the other aspects involved in a trueloving relationship. In conclusion, what I do when I watch a flick like this, I fast forward 90%of the movie and just watch the romantic scenes.
I'm making an exception to my usual practice of not reviewing anything on amazon, due to the utter vileness of this movie. I saw it when it came out in theaters and hated it, and then a friend purchased the DVD and convinced me to give it a second chance... all in all, this movie ended up taking about four hours of my life that I will never get back. The performances are thin and uneven, the plot is inconsistent, and the dialogue sounds like it was pulled from fortune cookies made by the cast of Friends. To be fair, this movie does face several major obstacles. It has the misfortune to depend on the "acting" of glorified Ken doll Freddie Prinze, Jr. and the vastly overrated Julia Stiles, and in addition to trying to rise above these challenges, it also attempts to survive the intrusion of Ashton Kutcher. It fails on all counts. I do not hate the whole romantic comedy genre; nor do I hate the "teen" movie sub-genre, under which some would place "Down to You." (In fact, "Can't Hardly Wait" is one of my favorite movies.) I simply hate BAD movies, and this movie is a true abomination. If you enjoy the experience of wanting to drill into your own skull, then by all means, buy this DVD. If, however, you value your sanity, then please do not make the same mistake I did; stay far, FAR away from this movie.
I saw this in the movie theater and I just wasn't all thatimpressed. I thought that it would be a typical teenage "She'sAll That" movie but it wasn't. They tried relating to collegestudents but it just didn't help at all. Julia Stiles does sucha great job in everything she's done, but I was disappointed inher, too! Freddie Prinze Jr. just got a little annoyingthroughout the movie because all he seemed to do was complainand get scared of the relationship turning into somethingmore.Selma Blair could have done so much better than she did! Thisrole did not fit her whatsoever and I think she needs tore-evaluate what kind of actress she wants to be because hercharacter was just a psycho obsessed with sex and pancakes (* Ithink the whole sex thing is probably because her character is aporno actress*) but still she just needs the right role and notbe desperate for any role that is laid at her feet. Shawn Hatosy just didn't fit his character at all, he played a dumbassmost of the time and didn't care about anything but sex andhaving the right body. But the only really good character wasFreddie Prinze Jr.'s Dad. He was so funny and seemed to care buthad that "my career comes first" kind of stamina but he reallydid care about his son Al and his girlfriend Imogen. The wholeshampoo thing was ridiculous but by the end it turned outsomewhat okay but the movie itself needed so many touch-u
I'm not exactly sure why this movie is getting bad reviews. I happened tolike it, but maybe it's because I'm into teen movies. This wasn't a usualteen movie, though. It was about the whole "love at first sight" thing, andplus it was about college students, not high school students. Oh, and foranyone who doesn't understand why it's called "down to you," i think it'sbecause it means no matter what happens, with your true love it alwayscomesdown to them. they're the ones that matter the most.
This movie was simply horrible. I like both Freddie and Julia and waslooking forward to it. I really like both She's All That and 10Things...but this movie could not have been a bigger disappointment.Everyone in our audience thought so too. The writing and story wasterrible, and the acting sub-standard. I just kept hoping for the movie to be OVER, Icared so little about the characters, who lacked chemistry. I knew we werein trouble when Freddie began addressing the audience at the beginning ofthe film with trite little comments. It degenerated from there. Thesupporting cast was also horrible, with the notable exception of HenryWinkler, who's only fault was the poor judgment of being associated withthis dismal, meandering picture. 1/2 star on a scale of 1 to10.
This film seems to have fallen out of a cookie cutter for RomanticComedies.Everything that happens in this film is cliched and predictable. The actingis bad(especially Freddie, who has two expressions and a very hollowsoundingvoice) but the script is worse. It creates boring and stereotypicalcharacters. The dialogue is hokey and irksome. You can almost predict whatthe characters will say before they say it. A horrible, horriblefilm.
