Gael Garcia never stops surprising

I think that in this movie Gael really proves to the audience that he is capable of taking any role that is brought to him. I really like the way all the characters develop and the fact that the movie is very unpredictable. The whole movie is just full of surprises! Since before the movie started, the director was there sitting with us at the theatre that was so amazing, we got to enjoy his version of what is was like making this film, and how he came about to choose the cast.

Amor with an I

Director and screenplay writer Matthew Parkhill tells us that one hasto dot the I in the word love in Spanish when there isn't such need foranyone to do so since the word doesn't contain the letter! Well, if onebelieves that, then there is nothing wrong with this film that seems toget a favorable reaction from the people that have watched it if onegoes by the votes of ten and nine given in this forum. We never heard about such thing as the bride-to-be must pick out ahandsome stranger to kiss during her shower, in France, or in any othercountry. Evidently, if Carmen liked what she saw in Kit, then whybother to marry Barnaby? It appears the Englishman was not great in thesex department, something that the hot Brazilian was able to fulfillwithout any problem. The first minutes of the film are fine. Then, it meanders with nodefinitive direction as we are asked to stretch our imagination beyondthe limit. The three principals show no chemistry. What's more thesituation is somewhat absurd and goes from a romantic comedy into afilm noir which doesn't make much sense. The only problem we experienced was one of credibility. Gabriel GarciaBernal working in English doesn't seem as sharp as in his previousMexican appearances. Natalia Verbeke shows stiffness as a flamencodancer. James DArcy goes into a complete transformation from a manconsumed by love for the beautiful Carmen into someone else.

Dark, funny, quite a thriller... It's a forgettable title (that doesn't work in English), but you won't forget the wicked fun of the movie.

While the plot whirls around with a number of deft twists and deepens into darker layers, the story is emotionally uninvolving.

Gael in DOT THE I

I have just fallen in love with Gael Garcia Bernal's latest film DOTTHE I. Gael exhibits once again his mastery of the art of actingeffortlessly and the science of picking roles to play that depict thebeauty and often unappealing truth of human nature. In DOT THE I Gael plays a young Brazilian man named Kit. As Kit, Gaelis handsome, charming, witty, mysterious, deceptive, caring and subtlyseductive. You find yourself wanting to be the object of hisaffections. He plays this role realistically and beautifully.I don't want to give the film away because it's an experience everyoneshould go through for themselves. DOT THE I has a great musical scoreand uses wonderfully unique editing techniques. This is definitely agreat movie to watch is you are a Gael fan, likes twists, and likesgood acting.

Waste of time

Pretentious. Absurd. Not entertaining. Those are three reasons not tolike this movie. It's like poor quality speakers that go "thump, thump". Sure it catchesyour attention, but five minutes later you realize that you've got aheadache. It plays like a student film (subjective camera angles, accelerated rhythm, etc.) but has no sense of pacing whatsoever, andpoor dialog to boot. This film doesn't keep you guessing at all, and you don't identify foreven a minute with ANY of the characters. I think they should havewatched Memento a few more times to see how it's done.

More polished verbally, but alarmingly unexpressive nonetheless, Bernal appears to have learned one essential trick of the budding movie star: When floundering, flash that irresistible horndog grin.

Andy Klein 2012-05-01 21:37:17

... starts off intriguingly but is eventually scuttled on the shoals of plot contrivance.

Very COOL!

When I was watching this movie, I thought: ''Okay,I already know theending of it''. And when I came near the end, all the things I thoughtI would know, vanished. This movie is GREAT, really. The story itselfseems not to be a big deal until you see the End.:)It's very difficult to me, to watch a movie that really surprises me,And ''DOT THE I'' is definitively one of them.I never imagined that the character Barnaby (or he would be Ford?) wassuch a tremendous son of *****! :PAnd I also have to say that Carmen was great in her revenge!Ps:Gael García Bernal is a great actor. Each movie I watch that he isthere, I start to like him even more.

Dramatic and beautiful

This was a really strange movie. In a way you could predict the story, because of all the clues. But still I was sitting here amazed when themovie ended. The love story between Carmen and Kit is very beautiful, its a pity itonly became a love story because of the evil plot that Barnaby set upfor them. And I like to call it evil. As a woman I would be terrifiedto be fooled like that. To have my entire life broad casted in a movie, filmed behind my back.Even though the plot line frightens me a bit I love the way NataliaVerbeke and Gael García Bernal uses body language and facial moves toshow their feelings. They both fit very well for their characters.Altogether this was a very good movie and I have to say that I reallyenjoyed watching it.

What a good movie

Saw Dot the I last night and it has moved me to way you must see this movie. It has turned what might be a mundane movie into one that is amazing. The reason is the incredible acting. The three leads just deliver a fantastic performance. Because of this a play for dramatic twists is elevated to a fine movie.

Worth a look

I waited a day to post a comment to let the movie "sit" with me awhile.First, the acting throughout is excellent. You can't take your eyes offany of the characters, which are richly developed and complex - for thefirst two-thirds of the movie. Then the characters become two dimensional, and I ceased to care asmuch what happens to them - not because of the acting, but because ofthe plot. Characters with which we identify act in ways that areincongruous and we lose connection with them.At that point, the plot remains interesting, but it's almost as if wewere dwelling inside the story and now we've been pushed out. We stillwant to know what happens next, but now we're distracted by thedistance between us and the characters. But maybe that's the wholepoint - that people act in ways we don't expect given the situationsthey face. It's a good movie and I'd recommend a viewing. As I said the acting isexcellent and the plot is very solid - what you think is one thing mayactually be another - but there aren't any holes. Just the opposite. It's just that the first part (the love triangle) is so engaging thatsome of the plot twists that follow are annoying.I would still recommend this film. Don't listen to critics anyway -obviously people really loved this film 100% - you might also.

Disorienting, in the good sense of the word

I quite like this film. I think the script is solid, as well as theediting, which can be a difficult task for something with this kind ofstoryline. Overall the characters were complex. I admit, though, Ididn't like the female character that much. I'm not sure if it's theactress, or if it is her script. Her character fluctuates so much...itgives the effect that she doesn't know what she is doing, nor what shewants. Her lines didn't seem sincere enough. I felt like sometimes theactress was forcing herself to say the lines with certain, expectedemotions.Nevertheless, as I said, this was quite a feat. I hate that somecritics like to compare it to _Memento_, because I don't think it'slike it at all. I have a sort of bias toward Gael García, who I thinkis the most complete actor of his generation. However, James D'Arcysurprisingly shines through, especially toward the end, which issomething I did not expect.I could have done without the last 3 minutes of the ending. I began tolove Tom and Theo as well, and, as I sort of did not like the femalecharacter, I think the ending, while it worked for the script, was veryweak. I suppose it fits with her character, but part of me does notwant to accept it, because of her sheer childishness, and her tendencyto hurt herself in the process of hurting other people.Overall, it's well worth the watch. A word of caution: don't try tolook at the time on your video-playing device. It would take the funout of watching the film.

But despite its trickery, dot the i lacks emotional resonance that would elevate it above the banal.

Miguel Marques 2012-04-18 13:29:52

This is just not a good movie

Well, fellows...LITTLE SPOILER MIGHT BE AHEAD This is just a sentimental twist to "TheGame". Blurry characters, foreseeable turns, not good acting at all(except maybe D'Arcy faking he's hurt by the kisses from Natalia toGael "F*** I'm good!). Not even the two geeks are funny. Theparallelism with the Mérimée is just so sad and weak. Natalia Verbekeis gorgeous as always (incredible flamenco dancing), Gael pretty good, but they can do so much better. A black spot on their careers.I won't watch it a second time.

Awesome movie!!!

'Dot the I' is a very original, cool movie. Matthew Parkhill'sdirection took some getting used to, but it suited the storywonderfully. It was well cast and the acting was superb, though JamesD'Arcy was the standout. I was only able to see it once, and that was ashame. Once is not enough. 'Dot the I' is the kind of movie that stickswith you and gets under your skin. I am waiting with baited breath forthe DVD release. I do hope this movie is not forgotten come awardseason. Such an incredible concept should be recognized in some way. Doyourself a favor and rush out to see 'Dot the I' if at all possible. You won't regret it.

ksutton78 2012-04-17 04:21:48

Absolutely superb plot

This movie has lots of twists and turns and some have said animprobable storyline. Yet who wants to watch a move which ispredictable? Another comment is 'couldn't it have been left as a goodromance?' NO, there are lots of romance films around such as 'TheNotebook'. This movie is basically a good thriller with a mega finale. It has suspense, a good plot, great acting, believable characters andis different from the bog standard thriller.I was glued to this movie from beginning to end. A definite must seefor all who love a great story.Enjoy

DandyFop 2012-04-07 23:06:24

Absolutely amazing love story that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

I was lucky enough to just see this movie as a part of the 2003 SundanceFilm Festival, and I have to say, I am stunned that this is Parkhill'sfirst. The acting is flawless, the cinematography unique and interesting, and the story makes you never want to blink because you might misssomething. Parkhill is a truly wonderful director/writer who obviouslystaystrue to himself in how he wants this story to be told, and all of hisinstincts are wonderful. If this movie is not picked up for widerdistribution, it will be a huge shame, but I don't see how itcouldn't.Wonderful job!
