Still more Stiller

"Dodgeball" is another Stiller formula comedy which packs wackycharacters and silly stereotypes into a story about a glitzystate-of-the-art health club owner (Stiller) who wants to add a failinggarage gym, owned and operated by Vaughn, to his empire. Unwilling togive up his small time but nerd-friendly operation, Vaughn challengesStiller to settle the dispute over a champion dodgeball tournament inVegas. Factor in a babe and the usual good vs evil elements with theunderdog issue and a screenplay which is hyperkinetic and kaleidoscopicand the result is an enjoyable comedy romp worth a look by anyone whoenjoyed similar Stiller fare such as "Zoolander" or "Duplex" or"Starsky & Hutch" or "Envy", etc. (B)

Dodgeball - PG-17 or higher is appropriate

The movie is very funny, but I felt much of the humor was not appropriate for kids ages 13-17. We had two nieces watch it with us and the sexual inuendo was not appropriate for their ages. Be prepared to answer questions, what does that mean. Otherwise, the movie is completely appropriate and very funny for adults over the age of 18.

Stupid Humor is Fine, But...

...this is ridiculous. I have no problem with so-dumb-it's-funny humor(love Steve Martin), and it's extremely rare that I find any joke atall offensive (love Sam Kinison). Somehow, I found this film beyondstupid (even after 3 beers) and often squirmingly offensive (thestereotypes of Asians and Asian-Americans - of which my date was one -were not only insulting, but committed the equal sin of not even beingfunny). Of course you go to a movie called "Dodgeball" with lowexpectations, but it managed to miss even the lowest. Have you everbeen in a movie and wanted to scream, "When is somebody going to dosomething funny?! Please?! Anyone?!" Lots of talented actors and agoofily promising premise is wasted in an utterly, completely, totallydreadful script that could well have been written by a thirteen-yearold of below-average intelligence. No offense intended to anyone wholiked this film. And maybe it just caught me on the wrong night. Butthis is the one time that an IMDb rating (6.8) steered me completelywrong. This is the closest I've ever come to walking out of a movie,and thought you needed to be warned.

Funniest Thing Ever!!!!

you will absolutely love this film. it should have been nominated foran Oscar. Ben stiller and Vince Vaughn are so hilarious in this its noteven funny. peter la Fleur (Vaughn) owns Average Joe's gym and has aton of friends there, including Gordon, Owen, and Justin and manyothers. He then finds his world in danger when a sexy tax person comesand says he hasn't paid any attention to any of the files or turnedthem in and they're overdue and he needs to pay a fee. But he doesn'thave a lot of money. Then Gordon suggests they enter a DodgeballTournament because the winner gets big bucks. It is worth a try. Iwatched it and laughed harder than Ithought I would. My friend laughedso hard he cried. It is a very funny movie and I rented it. But youwon't have to rent it, because I know boom right off the bat you'llwant to own it and watch it over and over again.

I don't know, maybe it's just me. I didn't laugh.

I love comedies that are cleverly made. 'Dodgeball' had all of the SNL ingredients and that's what made it old. The concept of a movie based on the game of dodgeball is brilliant, it just wasn't executed right. This could have been a marriage made in heaven with Ben Stiller and a 'Rocky'-type ending. But there's no emotion here and the jokes are stale 90's retro. How many times do you have to throw in a 'lesbian' joke or mock Asian people? I would be ashamed to even be associated with a movie that puts down people who are in the minority.Yes, the film did great at the boxoffice, but so what? The crowd went to see Ben Stiller and the concept of dodgeball. I think this film brought the American comedy to yet another low. Will someone please bring back the great American comedy?

A wonderfully stupid movie!

I guess my husband and I just don't have the sophistication needed to appreciate "films," because this movie is just our type! We actually had to stop the DVD a couple of times to compose ourselves. My stomach hurt so much from the wrench-throwing and car-dodging scenes. I know it's stupid, but it totally cracked us up! If you want to watch something that requires no thinking but entertains you to the max, give this one a try.

A great companion to BASEketball!!!

Dodgeball is a great sports comedy. If you can call dodgeball a sport.When you make a movie about the big spectator sports like baseball andfootball, there's only so far you can go because you have to staywithing the widely recognized rules of the game. When you havesomething like dodgeball you can go hog wild, because the event itselfis already so over the top. Vince Vaughn is great as thetoo-nice-for-his-own-good owner of a small time gym that is,unfortunately, located directly across the street from Ben Stiller'sGlobe Gym wannabe. In an effort to save his business, he signs himself,and some of his regulars up in a dodgeball tournament to win enoughmoney to get out of debt. Well Stiller's character will have none ofthat, and signs up his own team to stop them. There you go. That's theplot. It's as deep as a mouse's grave. The movie lives on the charm ofit's two leads. Fortunately, Vaughn and Stiller are more than up to thechallenge. Vaughn plays it relatively straight, but sneaking in thesnide one liners with a smoothness that would make the like of BillMurray and Chevy Chase proud. Stiller gives a severely over the topperformance that perfectly fits the over the top character. If I had tosay something negative about his performance, it's only that it'sbasically the same performance he gave as the demented, fitness crazedleader of a fat kids camp in the Dusney movie "Heavyweights". But hewas so good there, I liked seeing a revisit of that character. Rip Tornis great as the old time dodgeball player whose coaching style willhave you doubled over laughing. Chritine Taylor doesn't have much to dobut look hot. But she's DAMN good at it. You are one lucky man BenStiller. Then there are the dodgeball games themselves. There are morethan enough vicious hits, beanings, and low blows to have the audiencesrolling in pain and laughter. Is it low brow humor? Of course. So whenit comes on DVD, get your buddies together, get the chips, tap the keg,and set down with a double feature of this and BASEketball, and have agreat old time.

Same old stupid comedy. But it works, and somehow it's actually really interesting

I didn't really have much hope for this film. I saw an ordinary, stupidVince Vaughn comedy featuring Ben Stiller. How wrong I was. It's notthe best written of scripts, but oh well, it's funny. Ben Stiller isespecially funny in the role of the "villain". I really enjoyed thestory as well, I was really interested in the dodgeball, and by the endI was really rooting for the underdogs. The characters weresurprisingly well developed. So it's a bit stupid at times, but whocares? It's enjoyable, I enjoyed it. It had me laughing for hours. Idon't like Vince Vaughn, but he was watchable in this. If you'relooking for a light-hearted comedy for just relaxing and not having tothink about, this is the perfect choice.

Sporting Entertainment of the Future

Balls go deep in this movie and Dodgeball: A true Underdog Story reallyseems like some sporting event that has about as much history asprofessional boxing. With White Goodman (Ben Stiller) playing the roleof they feared,outspoken,comical Mike Tyson and Vince Vaughn as, well,almost like a laid back Brad Hamilton from Fast Times with a dodgeballseeking revenge on Mike Damone for impregnating his sister. With abunch of misfits comparable to the Mighty Ducks, Average Joes Gymcoached by Young Patches O'Houlihan (Hans), gets ready too exchangemore than just balls with White Goodman's Globo Gym. With awkwardromances, pirates and red rubber balls, dodgeball brings theentertainment of a professional sporting event too another level (nottoo mention can be viewed live on Espn 8 "Espn Ocho").

Funny Movie, though not as funny as Zoolander =)

This movie is pretty funny and has a lot of good jokes. It has a few "painful" parts, but mostly the humor is good. And Steve the Pirate makes the movie!

Very funny

** HERE BE SPOILERS **White Goodman (Stiller) is running an aggressive, elitist gym. The gymis economically successful and Goodman is looking to take over PeterLaFleur's (Vaughn) Average Joe gym across the street. Only very few oddcustomers visit Average Joe gym and business is extremely bad. In fact,LaFleur is short $50000 and Goodman is about to finally take over thebusiness. The Average Joe crew has only one chance to save their gym,to enter a Dodgeball tournament with $50000 in prize money.The story is not great, but the little mishaps and adventures the crewexperiences, along with odd characters and great cameos, make this ahilarious movie. Ben Stiller is great as Goodman (I have a hard timeimaging anyone else that could make that role better). Vaughn and theother are also good, and especially Alan Tudyk as Steve the Pirate isreally good. Otherwise, it is the little things that make this a goodmovie, as mentioned the story is not great, and unfortunately it is alittle too predictable to merit a higher grade. But a must seenonetheless.8/10

Dodgeball: A Truly Unfunny Movie

I remember when I first saw the ads for Dodgeball on TV. This movielooked hilarious! Then, the moment of truth came; I watched the movieand it was horrendous. The only funny parts of Dodgeball are what wasshown in the trailers, the rest of the movie is a miserable,cliché-ridden, unfunny disaster. many of the jokes fall flat. BenStiller's character is annoying and unfunny. (And his "belly dance"during the end credits will haunt my nightmares for the rest of mylife.) I had such high hopes for this movie, and they were all crushed.I didn't enjoy this movie. (It gets a 2/10 because of the funny partsthat were used in the trailers.)I warn you as a friend; do not watchthis movie, because if you're anything like me Dodgeball is not whatyou would expect it to be from watching the trailers.

90-Minute Saturday Night Live Skit Works

This film is so stupid it's funny and it knows that it's stupid and wants to be stupid. It actually goes out of its way to be over-the-top stupid, complete with a gym owner (Ben Stiller), so overwrought by a secret eating disorder, he massages pizza while surfing the Internet in his private moments of "gastroporn." He's determined to take over a smaller "loser" gym, Average Joes, run by Vince Vaughan. This comedy is a good-hearted fable about the average guy respecting himself and maintaining his integrity in the face of a culture rendered grotesque by its extreme vanity and naricissism, the embodiment of which is seen in the Ben Stiller character. I don't mean to over-intellectualize the film; I simply mean to say that the film, for all its silliness and over-the-top humor, is about something.

This is what you should expect in a dumb comedy

I love hilarious and gut busting movies. Unfortunately I did not think thismovie fit either of those categories. Do not get my wrong, I usually enjoyBen Stiller's comedy but this movie did not work for me. I thought I wouldbe laughing uproariously but in fact for the first part of the movie I mighthave chortled at the most! Ben Stiller does a fairly decent job as the megalomaniacal Globo-Gym owner,I especially enjoyed his over the top statements in which he would finish bysaying, " I'm just kidding....no I'm not". That was pretty funny but therest of the movie was pretty stale. Vince Vaugn is also a fairly good foilto Stiller's over the top performance. The cast of 'average joe's' are justthat, average and uninteresting. The wannabe pirate guy was just annoyingto say the least.The plot bothered me the most because the script writers put absolutely noeffort into writing this story. I would not have minded as much if therewas a tongue in cheek, sort of "wink, wink" to the audience but I did notreally see that. The plot is just a narrow sort of progression to the finaldodge ball tournament but nothing really interesting happens in between. Iguess the funniest part of the movie was people getting hit in the crotchand head with dodge balls. I must note that while I was not laughing atseveral parts of the film, other people were; maybe I was missing something. Overall I would give this film an average grade of: ** out of *****

Absolutely hysterical

I laughed for all but 5 minutes of it. The randomness in jokes was very well done. The silly humor, clever lines and pop culture satires were blended in perfectly.This movie is one of the best comedies I have seen in years. It is exactly that, a great comedy. Not some lame Oscar drama, repeated copycat thriller/mystery or some predictable suspense/horror. Just a film that will make you laugh your pants off and forget about the worries & stress of reality.To the critics and reviewers that give this low ratings because it is not worthy of Oscar garbage like Crouching Tiger, the world would be a happier place without you.

Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive & Dodge

I also found something interesting during my visit to the Special Features. The first thing that you notice is that the layout of the section is Average Joes and the little scene off to the side is Justin's ever-hilarious attempt to catch Patches's dodge balls during training. However, look next to the balloon that says "resume film". You see a balloon that is Globo Gym's logo. Click it, and you are taken to a scene where the fat White Goodman says that every time he snaps his fingers in the movie, hit enter. It happens three times in the movie. 1. When White tries to seduce Kate in his office, 2. At the Dirty Sanchez, after White pushed the waitress onto the Average Joes's table, and lastly, 3. After Kate throws White against her door and he says "nobody makes me bleed in my own blood. Nobody!" After you press enter for the third time, you will be taken to the scene where White does his "Patented 'Peek-a-Boo'" dodge ball throw, then to the t.v in the Globo Gym building (the one where he says "There's a good energy in the gym". You, for quite some time, watch the little show on the screen before you are taken back to the scene where White gets on the Blue motor scooter driven by Me'Shell. The show is funny. I found that you have to press enter right when he snaps his fingers. It's kind of hard to get it right, but it does work. I absolutely LOVE this movie!! I even stepped out of my preferred genre of action/horror/sci-fi movies to add it to my collection. This hilarious movie is better seen unrated, but if you don't want children to see it, or you just don't want to see it, you aren't missing much. Which is wonderful, because you don't want to miss any of this hilarious comedy. Patches' training procedure is enough to make yourself roll on the floor laughing. How Ben Stiller, Rip Torn, and Vince Vaughn say all those hilarious things with a straight face is beyond me, but it's funny as all get out! Although...I must say that I really hope you aren't drinking any liquids or are tired from laughing already....I really do...because the ending credits are priceless!!! It's too funny! I'm still laughing!!!

Cute, Funniest Sport Movie Since Basketball

Sports movies usually bore me. I'm not much into sports, and I remember "Any Given Sunday" seemed to go on longer than the entire football season. Anywho, sport movies seem to work better as comedies. "Caddyshack" and "Happy Gilmore" made golf actually look interesting and fun. "The Bad News Bears" and "Mr. 3000" made baseball fun. Even "Field of Dreams" made the sport seem spiritual as a movie. This particular film is funny. Great comic performances from all the cast. The film breezes through nicely. There's even a couple of romances. Some good plot twists and fun, fun, fun. Now imagine if t he boys from South Park would have helmed this project...

Not just a film for average Joe's.

Peter LaFleur {Vince Vaughn} is the owner of Average Joe's Gym, barelymaking any cash, LaFleur looks like losing his Gym to corporate bighitters, Globo Gym. Globo Gym, run by sleazy White Goodman {BenStiller}, is the complete opposite to Joe's, big money, big clientèleand big ego's. So when the few hardy members of Joe's decide to enterthe Vegas Dodgeball Tournament, in the vain hope of winning the cashprize to save the gym, it's no surprise that Goodman enters his ownteam to hopefully thwart their plan.A joyous, crude and eminently quotable underdog story that demandsrepeat viewings to fully catch all that is going on. Dismissd onrelease as being a throw away comedy from the Stiller/Vaughn frat packbrigade, Dodgeball has since gone on to surpass expectations and risetowards the top of the sports comedy table. A true ensemble piece {thoStiller's preening Goodman takes the honours}, few films of its typehave fused a character based heart with such dumb shenanigans andgotten away with it. These are odd and even sad people, but unity is afine thing, even when wrenches are bouncing off their heads and ballsare thudding into the groin! Yes it's that type of film, and we are allthe better for the experience. Boasting smart use of cameos from suchluminaries like William Shatner and Chuck Norris, Dodgeball is atestament to how good physical comedy can be, and of course it's alwaysgreat to shout for the underdog. No matter how bizarre they may be.8/10

not what i expected, but "ok"

it was definitely a ben stiller type comedy. if you don't enjoy his style of movies, I advise you not to watch dodgeball. it was a pretty good movie in my opinion. it was really a story of the little guys overthrowing the bigger ones.first the good review. I enjoyed the hilarious acting of ben, although this was one movie where his jokes were a little flat and strange. he plays another slow character as he did in zoolander. of course this movie has people getting hit in the face or crotch and is always funny to see, so there is a little slapstick comedy in it. rip torn plays an aged coach, and had probably had the funniest jokes. pretty sexual jokes though. i liked the whole tournament scenes and were very fast paced. entertaining at the most.now the bad news. i laughed, but not as much as i thought i would when i went to see dodgeball. all of the funny jokes and scenes were shown in the trailer, so i knew what was going to happen. I've seen it so many times that all that came out was a small chuckle. i heard some of the people in the theater complete sentences of the actors even though it was there first time watching this movie. too much was put in the trailer and was a big disappointment. ben is one of my favorite comedians and i really love his style that makes me laugh. but dodgeball was one of his worst attempts. he had jokes that a 5-grader would write. dodgeball was not what i expected. i guess you could say i didn't get what I'd thought i would from ben. i still think its a movie worth watching, but only watch it if its your last resort at choosing a flick to see on a friday night with your friends.
