Lawrence and Freddie are con-men big-time and small time respectively. They unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this town (on the French Mediterranean coast) aint big enough for the two of them. They agree to a loser leaves bet. The bet brings out the bestworse in the two. Interesting twist at the end.
Movie Photos:
We have taken some photos of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels". They represent actual movie quality.
This movie ia loaded with fun! Scenes that you can watch over and over again and never get tired of! Filled with the great dry wit of Lawrence Jameson (Michael Caine)and the outrageous physical comedy of Freddie Vincent (Steve Martin), this modern day Odd Couple has a slice of blackmail, deceit, and money madness that will keep you slapping your knee till the end!
This movie is absolutely hilarious. This is definitely one to buy because you will watch it often and laugh every time you watch it. Michael Caine and Steve Martin are so good together in this film.I believe it is the funniest movie I have ever seen.
This review is from: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels [VHS] (VHS Tape) My husband has loved this movie since day 1 so now he owns it and watches it and many more over and over and still, he laughs.
I read the review, by Bill Slocum, and bought the DVD. What a let-down.Michael Caine has been constantly miscast by Hollywood, and to expecthim to reprise the role that David Niven made so memorable, was doomedfrom the outset. They did the same with Joan Collins. Caine does bestplaying London, East-End Jewish barrow-boys - Alfie and Mona Lisa aregood examples. To cast him as an English gentleman is farcical. But heis on the Hollywood social "A" List, according to himself; he has agood tailor and he plays by their rules. Steve Martin can be funny, buthe is no Marlon Brando. For those who want to capture the essence ofthis story, nail down a copy of "Bedtime Story" - for a believableportrait of an English aristocrat and a stylish confidence tricksterand that of an American chancer. Another gem of David Niven's was "TheBest of Enemies" with Alberto Sordi as the Italian Commandant of a POWcamp in Abyssinia in WWII. A Nice contrast of styles; the gentlemanlygood manners and humour of Niven and the exasperation of Sordi.Unfortunately, it is not available on DVD; like Hot Millions; Laughterin Paradise; Toi le Venin; Becket; The Switchboard Operator and so manyother gems of the 1950's, consigned to the vaults.
This review is from: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (DVD) I am not a huge Steve Martin fan, but I have thoroughly enjoyed two of his films, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," and this one, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." I think this is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It ranks up there with "The Odd Couple," and "Grumpy Old Men." How can you get much better than that? The movie portrays everyman's fantasy of manipulating women. I emphasise the word "fantasy" because it's not very realistic. Our wives will keep us aware of that. And of course there is the surprise ending. If you haven't seen the movie, we'll keep it a surprise.
Steve Martin and Michael Cain are hillarious in this laugh out loud comedy of two guys who try to scame Women at of thier money. this movie is awesome
This is one of those movies that you can watch over and over again...and it's still as funny as the first time you saw it. Martin is wonderful in this movie and Caine the same. This movie is a MUST SEE!
Steve Martin has done it again. Another hilarious movie! It's about these 2 con-men who scam women for their money. Freddy Benson is a crass, loud American. Laurence Jameson is a suave, urbane European. Their common ground is that they both are confidence men, and they meet in a train compartment as Benson is scamming his way across Europe, taking advantage of women's generosity. The two are forced into a rivalry, which culminates in a wager to see who can be the first to bilk $50,000 out of American heiress Janet Colgate. Then comes a twist ending that'll leave you cracking up for days. This is a must see for anyone who has good taste in movies. Buy it!
Given how great "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" is, it's surprising thatSteve Martin and Michael Caine haven't collaborated a second time. Theyplay con men Freddy Benson and Lawrence Jamieson, respectively, bothvying for the heart of tourist Janet Colgate (Glenne Headly) in theFrench Riviera. But boy do they have a surprise coming! There's somegreat sequences here, namely the whole part where Steve Martin's in thewheelchair, and I sure didn't see that ending coming! All in all, notonly do you die laughing here, you just might want to take a trip tosouthern France to see where they filmed this. Conning always makes forneat movie plots, but none like this. Also starring Ian McDiarmid (yes, the guy from "Star Wars" episodes 1-3) as Lawrence's butler.
What could be more brilliant than the wonderfully entertaining pairing oftwo very funny men, Steve Martin and Michael Caine! Add to the mix the cuteand "innocent" Janet Colgate and you have yourself a hit! Both Martin & Caine's characters are con men, set on working their own turfand not sharing the field. While Caine's character manages to presenthimself as an up scaled, wealthy man in every role he takes on, somehowMartin's character ends up on the low end of character roles, making thismovie even funnier. Michael Caine is perfect as a wealthy upper classgentleman, while Steve Martin plays the odd characters to the hilt! JanetColgate completely makes you believe she is the innocent American girl nextdoor. The ending is a hoot - and the movie is a real treat for ages teenageto 100! If you like a light-hearted, funny movie with plenty of twists andturns to keep you guessing the first time you watch it, then you'll enjoythis movie. The ending is a real treat and will have you chuckling (as wellas going back to watch it again and again).
I rented this movie after not seeing it for a while and it is still hilarious. Steve Martin and Michael Caine are superb as adversaries competing to defraud women in the Riviera. They are both con-men, but very different in how they go about it. It is a great story of one-upsmanship, until they are both brought to their knees by Glenne Headley (stellar as always). I can't add much that hasn't already been said, but if you enjoy smart comedies, check out this one.
Any movie that includes the line,"Ruprict, do I have to get the genital cuff?" is a definate must. Steve Martin doing physical comedy and a pretty good plot for a silly movie. I've watched it a billion times.
Steve Martin at his loudest. Michael Caine at his dryest. Frank Oz at his smartest. Who could ask for anything more? A great script, amazing acting and wonderful direction makes Dirty, Rotten, Scoundrels one of the best comedies out there. It combines humor, surprise and conmen to make a deliciously malicious movie!Fred Benson (Steve Martin) is a loud and obnoxious American con man, who gets sympathy from wealthy women who give him money. Laurence Jameson (Michael Caine) is a sophisticated European con man who takes womens money by playing the freedom-fighter prince fighting the communists. They meet in a train car, and their lives are never the same. They end up having a rivalry which builds up to them having a bet. All or nothing. Whoever gets a certain heiress to pay 50,000 dollars first gets the money, and stays in town to con more rich women, while the other leaves empty handed. An original script executed in such a way that you want to watch it over and over! It has rewatchability and is just to darn funny to pass up!
This movie will make you laugh from beginning to end! I have watched it several times and still laugh out loud. Highly recommeded for fans of Michael Cane and Steve Martin.
This is a genuinely funny movie, with stellar performances by all. Even better, it contains none of the gratuitous profanity, violence and sex that make it impossible for millions today to enjoy contemporary films without being offended. I highly recommend this movie.
This review is from: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (DVD) This is one of my all time favorite movies, which I consider very funny. This is one of the few opportunities in which you get to see a great drama actor like Michael Caine playing comedy and performing wonderfully. Steve Martin, of course, is a natural at this. The combination of both Caine (as the elegant and sophisticated gentleman) and Martin (as the low-life, street-wise guy) worked wonders for the movie. This is great entertainment from the beginning to the end.... and with an unexpected ending!Highly recommended if you want to have a few laughs.
In my opinion, villains are usually the best characters in movies. Theyprovide a refreshing change from the whiter-than-white heroes, often tothepoint that they become more intriguing than the main character (like Dr.Evil in the Austin Powers movies). This film focuses solely on the villains - a pair of con artists. LawrenceJamieson (played by Caine) is an established trickster in the town, pretending he is a freedom-fighting prince to gain money. When FreddyBenson (Steve Martin)arrives, Lawrence's business in the town isthreatened. He proposes a bet between them to be the first to obtain $50,000 from aparticular woman, and the loser has to leave town.Whilst the plot isn't the best or most meaningful ever, the script issharpand funny. The audience is repeatedly tricked into the bluffs anddouble-bluffs pulled by the characters on each other, resulting in asurprise but interesting ending.Fun all the way through, Michael Caine and Steve Martin make hilariousrivals, superbly directed by Frank Oz (perhaps better known as the voiceofYoda and some of the Muppets - but don't let that put youoff!)Rent it, buy it, or watch it on TV - you must see thismovie!
Great movie. It is a must to have in your dvd collection. Some scenes in the movie are hillarious. you laugh until you have tears in your eyes. an interesting comparison of the American and European culture. the twist at the end incredible. Do not miss this movie.
This comedy has been one of my personal favorite funniest movies of all time. I love the way the surprising twists and turns create hilariously funny situations which are the reflections of two characters' personalities. I think Michael Caine and Steve Martin were perfect for this type of humor; they are great together on the screen.Lawrence (Michael Caine) and Freddie (Steve Martin) are con-men who live off women; the former - big-time, pretending to be a King in the Exile and residing in a charming Mediterranean French town, the latter is good conning women into giving him small sums of money or buying him a dinner. The town is not big enough for them to work together. They agree to a "winner stays, loser leaves" bet. Enters American visitor - rich heiress Janet Colgate (Glenn Headly), sweet and naive young woman.Glen Headly - an intelligent, attractive actress more than held her own opposite Caine and Martin. It is easy to first overlook her work but after the movie is over, you realize how effortless, artful, and complicated her performance is. Last time, when I watched the movie, my husband joined me and watching Glen Headly on the screen for what could easily be the tenth time, he asked how she did it. Perhaps, the art of How they do it not only What they do keeps me glued to the screen every time Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is on. Highly enjoyable, sparkling, witty, and hilarious gem of the movie.
I missed this film in the cinema, but watched it on video, on my own andlaughed till I cried. I have since rented it several times and havedecided to buy it if it is available on VHS. The screenplay is witty, interesting and funny. It gives Michael Caine and Steve Martin wonderfulopportunities to display their contrasting comedic styles. I wouldrecommend it to anybody who wants to see something funny and clever. Ifonly there were more films like this.
