Everyone who believes in God Must see "Devil"

Everyone should see this film.Every CHRISTian MUST see this film.I can't stop thinking about it.5 people stuck on a elavator, and one of them is The Devil. One by one when the lights go out one of them is killed untill there's just 2 people left. You will never guess who's The Devil untill the end,and what a ending

Entertaining, but frustrating at the same time.

I began watching "Devil" with the worst possible expectations, and cameaway pleasantly surprised yet my expectations were still affirmed. The cinematography, for the most part "Devil" has decent camera work, and lighting. The lighting is mostly "cool" going for the cleanprofessional look of the office building, giving the film a cold feel. There are a lot of rapid cuts in the elevator itself giving manyopportunity for many obvious jump scares. Sadly the movie main horrorcomes from these jump scares, and leaves atmospheric dread or emotionalfear to be desired. The writing, is where the film falls very short. First of all I am aChristian and this rendition of the Devil completely profounds me, andeven though I tried to alienate myself from this opinion, the moviesplot gave it room for some lazy writing. As the Devil is responsiblefor the events happening in this movie, it allowed the movie to haveover 9 deus ex machinas. From a guard walking from into a pool ofelectrified water to pigeon jump scare killing a mechanic, this movie'splots is just padded with unfortunate circumstances from the victimsbeing rescued in the elevator. The most ridiculous scene (now infamousI am sure) involves a Latino character finding out that the Devil isresponsible by flipping a piece of toast, and seeing it fall jelly sideup. This scene truly dumbfounded me as he chose the an event that had a50% chance of happening to prove the existence of the Devil. I mean hecould have tried several other random occurrences to strengthen hisargument (he believed that when the Devil is around bad occurrenceshappen) e.g. he could have tried using a vending machine, he could havetried going to the toilet with a blind fold on to strengthen hisbeliefs. What I am trying to get at is that this movie completelyrelies on idiotic writing, coincidences and lazy plot holes to work. The ending made no sense as the Devil just leaves one of the victimsalive in the elevator, because he confessed his sins , yet it killseveryone else in said elevator with no qualms. (It is also quiteobvious who the Devil is)The acting, for the most part, was good. The actors in the elevatorwere able to convey their fear and panic to the camera quite well, andeven though there were a lot stereotypical characters e.g. ( thereligious Latino, the gangster African-American, the snake oilssalesmen), they were mostly done in a believable standard. The score, was decent but had a few jarring scenes. It was mostlycomposed of heavy bass driven sound, and ghostly strings (to createsuspense I assume) similar to that of Hans Zimmer movie's, but Ithought the movie should have relied less on the score and have a moresolitary feel to it. The bass was used to accentuate the jumpscares, but this did nothing to effect me. Devil is not a bad movie but it is not a good one either. It was notboring and some bits were entertaining albeit annoying. Where it fallsvery short is the plot. I would not recommend renting this, but if itis on the TV it would not hurt to watch it.5.8/10

One by one, they all fall down

Five people are trapped in an elevator. You know one of them is the devil, but you don't know which one, making this one nice whodunnit. What's nice about this whodunnit is that the suspects all look guilty. Just when you think you've pegged the right suspect, that person gets killed. One by one, though, they all fall down. I mean that both in the literal sense and in the spiritual sense. Although this story is a mystery, it's also a morality tale, too. There's symbolism from the start with the world being filmed upside down and the goal of this story is to bring it right side up again. When the devil is revealed, I kind of suspected this person because I've seen this plot twist used before in a book by a famous author. However, it was by no means obvious, so those looking for a good mystery should be pleased.

M. Night Shyamalan is back!

First i'd just like to say that i rarely post reviews, but when i sawthat this movie was only given a 6.2 i had to set it straight. Afterseveral past movie busts, M. Night Shyamalan returns with Devil. I wentinto this film expecting sub-par acting, lengthy and complex dialogue, and a lack of suspense from Shyamalan's past movies, but was i wrong! This movie starts off at a great pace with upside down shot's ofPhilly, making it seem like the devil is walking the earth, looking forpeople to devour, and then at the end ties in it all back together verynicely (you'll see what i mean when you watch it), though i thoughtthat was very creative. The acting was also much better than expected. The usual killer with these movies is the acting that takes away fromthe experience, but for the most part the acting was pretty good. Iwouldn't say this movie is very scary, there are some moments thatmight make you jump but for the most part it was the ability to keepyou on the edge of your seat that really engaged me into the movie. Icould ramble on, but im not, JUST GO SEE THIS MOVIE! :D

A great thriller, m night shyamalan is back!

im a big shyamalan fan so after the happening and last airbender i wasdisappointed. i thought he had left his more original and thrillingfilms but he's back with this one and it delivers.although not directed by m night shyamalan - which i fell would havemade this better - the story is by him and it really is amazing.you might think its going to be rubbish, set in a lift but it will keepyou hanging on to the edge. its not over the top at the end and thetwists are perfectly set out.i hope more films come out like this from m night shyamalan.8/10

Devil

Someone jumps from a high rise landing with a loud thud upon a van andthis event sets up the plot for DEVIL about a collection of characterswho become trapped in an elevator which stops while going up. DetectiveBowden(Chris Messina)lost his wife and son to a hit and run driver(wholeft a note saying he was sorry)and has recovered from nearly drinkinghimself to death. He is on the case of the unusual suicide and soonenters the high rise to try and help the trapped people in the elevatorescape. Jenny O'Hara is an older woman(she is a pickpocket), BojanaNovakovic a lovely who blackmails wealthy men, Bokeem Woodbine a tempsecurity guard with a history of assault, and Geoffrey Arend is amattress salesman who gets on their nerves. Logan Marshall-Green entersthe high rise with a satchel(which isn't in the elevator with him) andmentions how he served in Afghanistan, wearing the baggage of adifficult past on his face, also trapped in the elevator. Jacob Vargasand Matt Craven are the security guards who work in the high rise'scamera room, able to see the trapped people in the elevator, unable tohear what they say(but these two can talk to them). Bowden joins themalong with his partner, Detective Markowitz(Joshua Peace)trying tofigure out some way to get these people out of the elevator before theytear each other part, watching helplessly as each falls victim tosomething within, as the lights go out, coming back on the reveal agrisly murder. Is one of the group a serial killer or could the trueculprit be the devil himself?!?I have to admit that I actually enjoyed DEVIL far more than I hadplanned. I found it to be a rather exciting little thrill ride, utilizing the claustrophobic confines of the elevator rather well. TheChristian overtones might irk the non-religious, and most of theviolence which occurs within the elevator happens in the dark, thesound effects telling us what we need to know, the flickering lightsominously representing impending doom. We watch as those in theelevator bicker and fight, relations deteriorating fast as bodies startpiling up. The filmmakers, much to many's chagrin, understand thatmaking an entire movie inside an elevator is practically an impossibletask so they incorporate the story outside its confines, with perilbefalling several trying to uncover what was causing the lift to haltits course. Ultimately, DEVIL and its outcome touches on themes such asfate, forgiveness, and closure. Messina has a strong role here as doesMarshall-Green whose character is questionable. Woodbine is suspect theentire time he's in the elevator, but DEVIL does a fair job of castingdoubt towards Novakovic, also. Messina's detective spends a great dealof time attempting to put names with the faces of those inside theelevator, and the mysteries of the captured cast's identities ensnaredmy interest. While DEVIL is a PG-13 movie, it teeters on the edge inregards to the rather unpleasant deaths of several in the elevator, such as a piece of broken mirror stuck in the throat of a victim, another's head twisted all the way around. The performances, to me,help lift DEVIL past the rather so-so climax when the murderer isrevealed and one is allowed a reprieve, admitting to the past sin whichlanded the person in the elevator to begin with.

The only way this could stink worse is if someone farted in the lift.

Reading some of the quotes from US reviews gave justification forcautious optimism, there were a few glowing reports but at worst theconsensus appeared to "the best thing M. Night Shamalamading-dong hasdone since The Sixth Sense".No probs being runner up to an all time classic like that - a shame nowthat I must report that Devil wouldn't have made the qualifying heats, let alone the final. We open by being informed that this is part of "The Night Chronicles",indeed part 1 apparently. That's like being kicked in the nuts and thenbeing told that is the first in a series of such kicks, in other wordshardly anything to look forward to.The film starts with an annoying voice-over spouting supposedly seriousand ominous information about an old folk tale and foretelling ofevents to come in the film. Unfortunately this laughable device is usedagain and again throughout - I guess it was to build suspense but to meit only heightened the frustration of being $20 lighter in the pocketfor all this! Now Ding-Dong likes suicides in his films and they dolook pretty cool and give an abrupt, sudden scare - the only one inthis film - the cops lead by Detective Bodan are on the case. They ascertain that the deceased must have jumper from a great heightand sorta floated across the road to where he landed, so they taketheir case to the nearest high rise.Meanwhile seemingly 5 random people enter an elevator in the building -a businessman, a businesswoman, a slightly more casually dressed man, amore senior woman and a security guard. The lift breaks down shortlyafter and they are stranded momentarily.I'll go without naming or providing any further descriptions forreasons that will soon be obvious.Within minutes people lose patience, they get a little touchy andangsty, and the fact that periodically the electricity shorts out for afew seconds only gives them more reason to be jumpy and irritable. The building security "team" and old guy and a younger Mexican (Ithink) man are on the case, informing the maintenance man to get movingon the lift and informing the trapped quintet that "it will all be oversoon". If only...Now the security team has access to a camera in the lift and canmonitor the goings on and the temperament of the trapped, the intercomunfortunately only works into the lift, so no message or informationcan get out. Some "odd" visions appear on the camera, the lights continually spot inand out and someone gets a minor injury.I'll leave the descriptions of events there. After all the title alonesays one thing, the byline on one poster brags "Five strangers trapped. One of them is not what they seem".Join the dots people! The jumpy little Mexican security guard seems afew steps ahead of everyone else, he declares early that "You mustconsider that one of these people might be the Devil". Bold words youmight think, bizarre nonsensical words, but then our amigo backs hisclaim up by... dropping his toast and seeing it fall jelly-side down! That proved it for me. Without a doubt the Devil is in that lift! Afterall toast don't lie! So we get another 40 odd minutes of peopleoverreacting way too early, as if they saw the poster themselves andfelt "Well the audience know it's coming, might as well act quick".The lights continue to flicker and blackout in the lift for shortperiods, but the events that occur within become more serious anddeadly - creating even more tension and panic. Don't worry though kids:you never care about any of them enough to hope they live or die, infact one in particular I prayed would endure a brutal and intenselypainful death. The rescue attempt outside muddles along and the Detectives find moredirt on each and every one of the trapped people - helping the audiencestill awake try to pick the "One". The Mexican guard has time tounleash one more genius comment before the disappointing reveal andobligatory Ding-Dong twists that must be at least attempted before thecredits roll a merciful 80 odd minutes in: "Everyone believes in him alittle bit. Even guys like you who pretend they don't" Well thanksSenor for speaking for us. One thing is for sure though, he is nolonger speaking about Ding-Dong, this was his last chance with me, thatis now dead and buried. Each time he releases a film from here on I might drag out my SixthSense DVD and watch that instead of blowing good money on bad rubbish.Final Rating - 5 / 10 . Surely after a dozen years and many deplorablefilms we might see sense and avoid anything "from the mind of"Ding-Dong? Don't make the same mistake I did - the only thing thatmight make this film stink worse is if they farted in the lift.I

who cares about pg13!

even though its a pg 13 movie some of the scenes are still violent. pg 13 is only blood, its got nothing to do with scares or suspense. i thoguht this movie was fantastic from beginning to end. its a small movie but it has a good bite to it. its almost liek a mini horror movie because of the short length. it movies slow enough to make the movie feel somewhat longer then it is which makes you feel liek you definately got your moneys worth.

Not the type of Ride I would look forward to

The Devil can take human form and claim the people he wants. He likes to play games, letting others see it, making certain that things play out his way. There are other rules, too, and those rules are left like breadcrumbs through the movie. Still, the reality of it is that a group of people end up in an elevator and something starts happening. There are oddities on the visual, people doing strange things, touching when it shouldn't happen, criminal acts coming to the front, and wonder who is doing it all. The bodies stack up, the people freak out, and watchers try to understand just what is happening.Spooky.I was REALLY relucant to watch this because movies like Lady in the Water have burned me badly. So have things about communities, things about aliens, and other notions tha came from M.Night's mind. The one thing he seemed to get right in this movie was the fact that he didn't do all the jobs that were available and, as such, he got it all going. It was a help and more.As far as the set goes, I thought the building and the elevator worked. The confined space and the lights going out were really something horrible when you think about it. Even thinking you might be trapped like that would be terrible enough. Now you add in some little things on the side of the monsterous as well and you have something that is starting to roll forward. you have a nice place to kill and you have a set that makes men seem like sheep as they cower and try to understand why.The actors were good, too, but I would have liked one thing out. The story is told by someone fearing the devil and, really, it felt like the Catholic church was in their giving me lessons. I wouldn't have minded him being there to help us along, either, but he kept telling the viewers aobut what might come for the people. I get it is the big baddy, too, but the guy just couldn't leave it and let it soak in.Even people around him got really tired of his Grandma's passed down knowing. The mopvie had a fair turn of scares and I did like it. i found the ending to be matter of convience, but a matter like that can be ignored when watching something like this. I know a lot of people did not like this, either, and maybe you would be one of those. I say that you throw out your expectations and think B-movie. If that is all you have, you will at least get what you want it. Regardless, I liked it and am happy to own it.3.5-4 stars - Thank you for your time.

It's just a "damn" good story

Whether you're a believer (of any kind) or not, DEVIL is just a good story. It opens with a panoramic city view that's filmed upside down. An opening the likes of which I have never seen before and one that works incredibly well to unsettle the viewer and give them almost a sense of "vertigo" (I couldn't help myself!). You don't really know which side/end you're supposed to be focused on and that is also what makes the film work so well.Just who are these people and really.... what the hell is going on? It's not supposed to be a horror film, not even necessarily a thriller. But it serves incredibly well as a psychological examination of how people end up responding in situations of crisis. Especially when you don't even really know for sure if it IS a crisis.I'm going to have to give a nod to Agatha Christie's TEN LITTLE INDIANS because as the passengers begin to die, one-by-one, in front of each other and the security crew and police who are unable to get to them, you can literally make yourself crazy trying to figure out "whodunit". Which isn't necessarily the point and if you make the point of getting caught up in that particular aspect, you're going to deprive yourself of a LOT of the content... and content (all of it) is what sets this film aside from anything I've seen in a long time. So, no slashers, no spoilers, no scene-by-scene replays. Just a heartfelt endorsement for a great story about people under pressure that was marketed and distributed in a manner that seemed almost destined to drive away the audience who would most have enjoyed it... People who like a good story about people. Good, evil or somewhere in-between.You should see it for yourself and decide. As always, INMO; - )

The Girl Should have made It!

This review is from: Devil (DVD) This was a really good movie. The Suspense really kept you on the edge of your seat. I Think that the young woman in the movie should have survived.. that is the only flaw! lol A Great Movie, that i will deffinatally watch again.

A wasted opportunity

Despite not actually having had a critical hit since 2002's 'Signs' anddirecting two of the most critically drubbed movies of the last coupleof years ('The Happening' and the truly dreadful 'The Last Airbender'),M Night Syamalan still feels warranted in launching his own brandedtrilogy, egotistically titled 'The Night Chronicles' (see what he didthere). Thankfully, he's only on writing and directing duty for thisfirst instalment. Quarantine director John Erick Dowdle takes the helmof this Hitchcockian cautionary tale of five random strangers who aretrapped in an elevator of a nameless office building. Unknown to them, one of them is the devil. The situation quickly descends into paranoidchaos as the stranded strangers become increasingly erratic – anddangerous to each other. It's a neat concept, and one which was soldincredibly well in a slick and targeted marketing campaign. Sadly, allthe potential shown by those nifty posters and trailers is squanderedon an entertaining but forgettable yarn that proposes some great ideasbut doesn't capitalise on any of them. The major mis-step isperiodically taking the action out of the confines of the doomedelevator. Just as the tension starts to mount inside the car and anysense of dread creeps in, we cut to the two-dimensional cops that arewatching events unfold on the security monitor. The net result is anextended Twilight Zone episode that would be perfectly serviceable as aTV special but just doesn't cut it as a major movie. The Shyamalancareer-tailspin continues unabated.

A surprisingly very good horror film....

I found the horror film The Devil to be a surprisingly very good horrorfilm. I really enjoyed the upside down images at the start of the filmwhere camera was flying across the skyline of the city. The filmcentrers on a group of people that are trapped in an office buildingelevator and apparently one of the them is supposedly the devil. I wasvery surprised at how good the acting in the film was, as much of thefilm was filmed just inside of an elevator. There was strong actingfrom all of the cast in the film. The atmosphere of it felt very tenseat times. especially when they all started arguing at each other whilstbeing stuck in the lift. I thought it was a very good film throughoutdefinitely recommended. 7/10

Watch Blackout instead

The producers of Devil pretty much took the idea from the 2007 movie "Blackout". I think that Blackout was better than Devil. Not saying Devil was dumb but Blackout is better.

Decent

This review is from: Devil (Amazon Instant Video) I think M. Night should stick to writing movies, and let someone else direct them. This was much better than his last movie, and the concept is good. Easily figured out, and there is lots of foreshadowing...lots. Some questionable moments throughout, but a decent horror movie.

@rjun .... 2012-04-28 07:20:34

Good concept but few thrills....

I must say, that i was disappointed in the end with the total movie, but having said that it wasn't too bad too. I guess Shyamalan relies onsame trick ....presented in a different way. Even though he idolisesSpielberg, i don't reckon his movies fall in Spielberg's genre. I wontgo into the story of the movie but "Moral of the story" - people willeventually bear consequence of what they do. Apart from few thrillswhich makes you jump from the seat...the movie is calm... Somehow ithought that the movie would have been brilliant if there were few morethrills. I appreciate the effort made by the technicians who had torely on a story which was way simple and therefore it is highlychallenging to attract viewers. But that is what cinema is about ! Ifyou are about to watch the movie My suggestion...don't have too muchexpectations!!!

The Ultimate Movie Review! - http://tss5078.blogspot.com

From the master of the modern day dark thriller, M. Night Shyamalan, comes Devil. Going into a Shyamalan movie, you know you're going to seea tragedy, a hero, and an amazing twist at the end. Coming off twoabsolute bombs, Shyamalan needed a good film to get back on track, andDevil is it! This is one of those movies that's hard to describewithout giving stuff away, so let me just say, it's Shyamalan at hisbest! It's a great story, a young unknown cast, and the ending willjust blow your mind. Unlike most Horror/Thriller writers, Shyamalandoesn't use gore to shock you, but rather has a story that will justscare you to your core, and by the end of this one I was rattled! Thisis a top notch film that fell way under the radar, because of itsunknown cast, but if you like scary movies or edge of your seatthrillers, you have to see this film!

anthrob 2012-04-27 02:43:30

Not Bad

The movie is better than other M. Night movies out there. I honestlydid feel that something was going to pop out on certain parts. Also, like all other M. Night movies, this one does indeed carry a twist. However, there were somethings in the movie that I did not like aswell: I felt that M. Night was preaching to us throughout certainsegments of the movie, which made me feel uncomfortable. The Devil, Ithought was an alias for the killer, but it was actually the ChristianDevil. Ramirez, in my opinion does a horrible job at security: whilethe elevator's occupants were fist fighting, he was on his knees withhis eyes closed, praying. If there were an intense situation going onlike that, especially if it had a mythological super-villain involved,I would have my eyes glued to the monitor at all times.Besides the bits of Christianity throughout the movie, it was decent.7/10
