dont see it trust me!!! i thought it wwould be good but i was tottlay wrong!!! so please dont waiste ur time on this rediculous movie!!!
This is not in any way, shape, or form, a good film. It is your typicalrun of the mill story only played much worse than normal. I guess it'snice that they got a few real poker players in this, but that's allthat is worth mentioning. It's already been said, but Shannon Elizabethis in it for about 5 minutes and then they just do away with hercharacter completely. Burt Reynolds is grabbing another paycheck andthe main character is not at all convincing. If he is supposed to bethat good, how come everyone knew what he had at the end. This movie isjust weak, i wouldn't waste your time. Go ahead and rent Rounders oreven Lucky You if you want a better poker film.
A product of the recent poker craze, this can't compare with the movie that helped launch it, John Dahl's tense Rounders.
This review is from: Deal (DVD) Great fun for card players and solid acting makes this an enjoyable movie. It's all about risk...love...and trust. The plot is predictable as it unfolds, but this flick hits the mark. Bret Harrison and Burt Reynolds hold this film together. The rookie and his mentor square off in the world of gambling and within the world of reality. Shannon Elizabeth's brief but poignant role glues the storyline together. Four stars for the pure entertainment value.
Another dud poker film. Why? Two main reasons; firstly, it does not look and feel like film. The script is really lazy: where was the REAL education, where wassomething we haven't seen a thousand times before. It is no way and atno time touches the heart and soul of the game. Plus it just looks andfeels like a TV made movie: there is no attempt to use film tocompliment the story, the grading, lighting, editing etc; are some ofthe most unoriginal I've seen for a while (And don't get me started onReynold's hairpiece). And secondly, and for my money this is incredibly off putting the wholefilm reeks of being an ad for a poker company and its site - there isjust no integrity, and not enough fun, excitement, or film here. The positives are the chemistry between the leads is good and thatmakes it just viewable for a really lazy beer and pizza night...But it's really just 90 minutes of regurgitated slick willy crap.Hugely disappointing, the best thing about this was the trailer....
There is so little originality here and so much faking it that it hardly justifies critical analysis.
...a movie making a brief stop at local theaters on its way to DVD bargain bins and cable showings at two in the morning.
It's not the cards you play but the people . . . which is why poker movies (in this case Texas Hold'em) are far more interesting than many sports movies
It feels like it would be more at home on the small screen rather thancinemas, There really isn't any suspense or tension. It tries, butnever delivers. the movie's box office explain it all: the film cost $5million to make, grossed less than $100,000 in theatrical release!!what a disaster, But I think "deal" was not that awful neither good,Had some good scenes like the scenes which take place at the pokertable are very entertaining and well made. But if you don't like poker, you'll find this flick boring and the plot really stupid. The storylinewas so predictable, I think a child could write that story! and gotBurt Reynolds a Razzie nomination for Worst Supporting Actor!! HAHAHAthats tremendous, He's not deserving it!
A movie made solely to promote an internet poker site. You have seen this movie many times before.
You've got to know when to walk away from a movie like this: right away, and that's only if you can't run.
Success isn't in the cards for this plodding poker drama.
Iv'e been waiting for this movie to come out.Where is it?They gave a date to come out likeOctober, but I still don't see it in the theaters.
Okay, so this is my first shot at this. I was compelled to writebecause of all the abuse this video is taking. It's not that bad.Actually I enjoyed it. Especially the ending which was a Great One bythe way. And also about the comment that poker fans would not like it,actually I think the contrary would be true for the simple fact it ISabout POKER and all most nothing else (although Shannon Elizabeth addsa little spice to it). No, other than Burt, there is no actor in thiswell known to be outstanding but there doesn't need to be. No, it isnot Rounders and the comparison wasn't, I don't think, a very goodchoice. If you want a comparison on how the movie is set up it moreclosely follows "The Color of Money" as pupil and teacher going off tothe big tourney. Anyway, I think poker fans will love it, if for noother reason you get to see almost every big name poker pro in the bizbe in a movie. Regardless, you'll LOVE the ending.
Every time now and then we see some new poker related title, what isvery understandable with all that "Americas last gold rush" going onall over the place. And every time I hope there will be something decent. But no - except"Rounders" there isn't anything worth your time and money.I am not talking about poker content even (which is truly horrifying inthe sense of realities of the game world and poker as such). The storyis as good as the baddest chick-flick may go in the terms ofstraightforward storyline that goes as far as "A man got into train inthe city A. Rode for an hour. Got off in the city B. The end"."Donk-flick", if you wish. Acting looks like someone intentionallywanted to make this film as "seconds-grade-project lookalike".Do Hollywood is out of professional actors? The only worst poker moviecould be "Lucky You".To sum it up - this movie is good only for one reason - we seeShannon's sexy ass in tight panties for a second. That's all. There'snothing more.
The film has more of a checklist of clichés than an actual script and, when it comes to the cast, director Gil Cates Jr. is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
A raft of pros appear as themselves, but this story will likely seem less exciting than an actual competition.
Move over Rounders...this film will rock the poker world! Brilliant movie with superb acting from a mixture of both actors and professional poker players, (including the beautiful Jennifer Tilly who is both). Great story..puts the sub-par poker film Lucky You to shame. Although Bret Harrison is no Matt Damon, both he and Burt Reynolds shine and sparkle separately and together. Great poker action and Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten play their usual delightful selves as the World Poker Tour announcers. The lovely Courtney Friel, (who now works for Fox News), also plays herself as she indeed used to gig for the WPT. Poker pros Phil Laak and Antonio Esfandiari also are natural actors and many other pros make cameo appearances. And the very sexy Shannon Elizabeth, (of American Pie fame), really heats things up as the love interest of Harrison. My only minor quibble with the film is that these two don't reunite at the end. Oh, and Burt's make-up is a bit much. But overall, a must-see for all poker fans!
Someone has to point out that the moral of this story is: "Don't go to work. Go play poker and you'd make millions (easily; almost everybody does)". Or: "Playing professional poker is a productive contribution to society". Or: "If you show them you bring enough money, your parents will forget their plans for your future and support you". There is a minor lateral message: "Prostitution is ok, as long as you tell your customer that you are a pro, so he does not fall in love with you. The problem lies in lying, not in prostitution itself".I cannot imagine what kind of influence could this movie have on impressionable kids.It is entertaining all right (one star goes for that), but it certainly cannot be "very very good". After all, it features Burt Reynolds, an actor with a long career of making bad, irrelevant, white-trash movies.
This movie deserves a higher rating than it's received here. It isn'tanything particularly heavy, and maybe the poker world is a bit tediousfor a full-length film, but I though the ending was really beautiful, about youth deferring to an elder who has taught them everything. It'sa story about personal relationships meaning more than winning. Theclimax is delivered in an engaging dramatic way that revolves aroundthe drama of a poker finale. In that way, this movie actually became a sort of classic Hollywoodparable, and since I'm a fan of Burt Reynolds, I was perfectly OK withthat homage.
