Why is Superman in this???????

I pretty much enjoyed every aspect of this mini-movie. The animationwas sharp. The story was interesting. The voice acting was very welldone. The only problem I had was with Superman's involvement. Why is he inthis? Aside from drawing in more viewers, his role is nothing more thanthat of a comparatively weakened hero. Even his physique in this is farless imposing than either Black Adam or Marvel, suggesting that thewriters and animators made him less potent on purpose to make theMarvel characters more formidable.I don't have a problem with Superman as a guest star, but I'm reallysurprised DC would place a flagship character in the role of outclassedhero. His ineffectiveness in this movie, both in prowess and influenceon the story's outcome, was painful to watch. Superman's involvementwasn't even necessary for Marvel to win the day.Obviously, DC is trying to place Captain Marvel in front of as manyeyes as possible, hoping to improve his popularity. That being thecase, they really should have relied on the character and the goodstory to draw the viewers in and left out the marketing gimmick ofadding a popular, but for this story, useless character.

Short But Sweet

First off, I'm a huge fan of all things DC and have loved all theanimated series and movies they've done. Some of the newer ones havehad a noticeably different look or feel to them, which is kind of nicesometimes. I'm going to mention the negatives of this movie first, since thatmight be of particular interest to some fans. The main feature isactually only about a half hour long, with three additional "DCSPotlight" shorts, about 20 minutes each, featuring Green Arrow, JonahHex, and The Spectre. The Spectre short was my least favorite, simply because he is more of asupernatural entity rather than a superhero, and you don't have thesame kind of conflict in this one that you do with the others. He's notreally fighting anyone, but rather acting as sort of a physicalmanifestation of "karma" and making sure three criminals get their justrewards. I was particularly pleased with both the Green Arrow and Jonah Hexshorts. I thought the western setting for an animated movie seemedparticularly cool and natural, and I hope someone follows up with someanimated work in this setting, since it's quite rare. Both shorts havesome particularly visceral action, and the Green Arrow one has one ofthe best fights I've seen in any animated movie before. This movie was animated very well and the character models were verygood. The overall appearance, especially the backgrounds, had aslightly hazy, washed-out look to them at times, giving it an almostanime-style look. They do some really cool animation during the fightsbetween Superman/Cap. Marvel and Black Adam, such as some slow motioneffects during a couple of the really hard hits, that really punctuatethe impact. The voice acting and choices of the actors were quite good(especially Arnold Vosloo as Black Adam), but my only complaint is theydidn't use Tim Daly for Superman, again. George Newbern isn't bad, actually, but Daly is the original Superman voice and I just preferhim. I've always thought Black Adam was a really cool bad guy, and hispersonality and voice were pretty much as I've always envisioned themto be, and I thought the ending was particularly interesting andsurprising. If you haven't seen the other shorts before, as I hadn't, then this isa definite must-see. The main feature was pretty short, but it wasstill very good and I hope they give us more Captain Marvel in thefuture.
