Morgan Adams fathers dying gifts to her are his pirate ship and a one-third part of a map of a treasure island - unusually inscribed on his scalp. Thinking herself in need of a Latin scholar to unravel the map, she buys learned slave William Shaw and sets off in search of the rest of the map. However, it is Shaw, obviously with plans of his own, who gets the second part. Hes somewhat easier to deal with, though, than the holder of the last part - Morgans less-than-loving piratical uncle Dawg.
At first, I didn't think I'd like it. We used the music for a marching show at school. I watched and it was a lot better than I thought it would be. Overall, I was pretty impressed. I don't know why it wasn't more popular.
This review is from: Cutthroat Island (artisan) (DVD) While the movie overall gives the viewers what they want, a pirate swashbuckler adventure of high action and buried treasure at the end there's nothing to really give it much more then a standard action flick with nothing new. When the movie first came out it was relying on the two main stars to help give it a major boost at the time, and while it wasn't the profit failure that Waterworld was it was not a profit maker either. While this is a good ten years before the Johnny Deep's Pirates of The Caribbean movies came out it still gives fans who enjoy a good pirate action flick enough entertainment to add this to your collection. The acting is a mix of decent to overacting especially somewhat by the main actress Gena Davis as sometimes she seemed to work perfectly for her role and other times she seemed to ham it up so much you couldn't take her seriously though the script dialogue didn't help either. I thought that this released version would have a superior upgrade in the video quality but sadly that's not the case so if you already have the earlier release just keep that as neither the video or audio have changed in quality. There's not much more to tell about this movie other then if you like Pirate movies here's a decent one to check out and while it still feels like it won't reach the overall entertainment of the first POTC movies it's still entertaining to watch...
This review is from: Cutthroat Island (DVD) This is a great action packed movie that I enjoyed more than Pirates of the Carribian series. I mean come on they took the monkey from this movie and put it in theirs. If you love pirate movies you won't be disappointed.
Ok this movie is so bad they should try to give it away when you buy something else...but I guess people would still send it back.
This movie has the greatest chase scene of any movie ever made. From the start in the prision to the ship firing on the fleeing carriage, this movie rocks in excitment. I dare anyone to show me a better chase than this one.
Everybody takes this too seriously. It is a fun movie and that's all. A summer film for kids and adults to enjoy together. I liked the sexy attitude and swashbuckling. But this is not an Oscars film. to give it an F is to say American Beauty deserves an F as well, since it is the other end of the spectrum. Lighten up , will you?
I know it's not cool to say so, but I loved this movie and the sound track cinched the deal. The heart pounding beats, the sweeping melodies, the historical feel of it all. It's definitely a must have!
This review is from: Cutthroat Island [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) FOr the reputation it got as one of the biggest box office bombs it really is an entertaining movie. It has action, humor and sex appeal. The PQ and AQ of this disc is excellent. The new sound mix explodes. My only complaint was the price. Right after I purchased it the price dropped and Amazon no longer price matches their own products. I would have had to return and repurchase. With B&M store having a better price policy I am now using Best Buy and WalMart a lot more.
All the misgivings this movie has been the brunt of are unfortunatelyspot on. Sometimes you can champion a movie no one else will, but thisdoesn't seem like one of them. 'Cutthroat Island' is an action drivenpirate story that harks back to simpler times, but that has the sideeffect of making the story feel rather predictable and the charactersroutine. You know Geena Davis is going to survive every kind of attackon her. It's that kind of movie. There's a lot of money on display. Theproduction values are great, but the flick lacks a real sense ofenergy. The directing is decent too, but everything feels fabricatedand not in a fun way.The basic tale of 'let's get the gold before they do' with the minortwist of having a female pirate as the lead is the sole thing that sets'Cutthroat Island' apart. It pulls no surprises, there's an obligatoryrevenge subplot and the whole thing felt very long in the tooth by thetime it had ended. Gigantic action set pieces can only get you so far.Cutthroat Island is like 'Waterworld' in many ways. An expensive seafaring adventure long forgotten by many with the best of intentions inmind.
What I like about this movie is how most was based on historical fact. This is one of the few movies that deal with pirates and doesn't contain walking the plank. Walking the plank makes a pirate movie a bit unworthy to be called a pirate movie, sometimes...But, most of it was based on facts, which can be entertaining. The action was wonderful! The suspense thrills you and leaves a viewer on the edge of their seat! Never underestimate the power of a good movie. This is one of those once - in - a - lifetime - good - pirate - movies. There are several, and this is one of them.
Whose idea was it to have a woman play a pirate captain? Geena Davis isn't even remotely convincing in this movie, but blaming her for this tragedy would be unfair. As this colossal casting mistake annoys the viewer all the time, it is almost impossible to judge this movie with a neutral view. The movie itself is exciting and the acting level isn't bad. That is whyI think it is so terribly unfortunate that they messed everything up by casting Geena Davis as Morgan. You CANNOThave a woman perform swordfights with 3 men at the same time! (SARR)
I bought this a couple of weeks ago because . . . it has . . . 7.1 audio. I have a 7.1 BD system, and hadn't bought a 7.1 movie yet. The movie was just OK - kinda hokey in fact- but everything exploding and ricocheting in full 7.1 surround made the whole thing totally worth it. Price is right, too.
Don't read any further! Okay, you can read:John Debney's work for Cutthroat Island remains one of the greatest masterpieces in Film Score history! The single album version would make your ears hurt with the intense energy of the London Symphony Orchestra. Imagine how much better a 2 CD version of the score is! All the music along with new cues and alternate cues are included in this release.Highlight tracks:Main titleCarriage ChaseMorgan's Captured . . .Okay, the entire album! Its no use trying to cover it track by track because it would take forever. From start to finish this score will stir your emotions and keep you soaring with its triumphant main theme. You won't regret your purchase of this album. Take my word for it! Oh, this score is becoming scarce so buy your copy ASAP!
A true pirate adventure that is cherished by people of all ages. Those who view it poorly, especially those with vulgar remarkes are simply confirming a universal fact: They're DUMBASSES. In order to make an intelligent comment, you must first remove your head from your ass, think, and THEN speak. Cutthroat Island has everything that makes a film great: a little humor, great effects, great story, and lots of fun. It is the perfect film for people with a little salt and a lot of life running through their veins. Go to the movie store, rent it, watch it. If you are dissapointed in the end then I suggest you check for vacancy at your local psycho ward.....I'm sure they could squeeze you in. OVERALL DOCUMENTED SCORE: A
This movie is one of the rare masterpieces of movie history. It has anexcellent cast, photography, editing, score, special-effects, settings, andso on! Everything is excellent in this movie! Just look at the lavishphotography, the wonderful historical correct settings and props! The actingis of course simply great, too. Davis and Modine are just the right peoplefor their roles. I guess such masterpieces like this that will becomeclassics just have to flop at their first release, like Disney's "Fantasia"did. Renny Harlin can really be very proud of his present for GeenaDavis.
This review is from: Cutthroat Island (Audio CD) This CD is exciting music from beginning to end. It is worth the purchase whether you liked the movie or not. I thought the movie was good but alittle over the top with the action but the music stole the show. If you like rousing music this is a good CD to have.
SPOILERS AHEAD MAITEY!! Cutthroat Island is one of my favorite movies. Now, I am no movie expert, but I have seen more of my share of movies.Geena Davis might not have been the best choice for Morgan, but reallyshe does make a pretty cool pirate! I wouldn't mind hanging out withher, as long as I stayed on her good side. Cutthroat Island may not bethe best action flick, but in it's day (1995) it was a good choice. Ithas some of the BEST real explosions found in any movie (not those CGIexplosions)!! Especially near the end. WOW!! Can that one be topped? Also, the soundtrack is definitely AWESOME!! John Debney is a verytalented composer and his work is like no other. I challenge anyone toget the soundtrack Cd and listen to it alone. I have done it manytimes, and I didn't really care for that type of music until seeingthis flick. Thank you Renny Harlan for bringing this story to the bigscreen. Job well done!
My wife and I saw Cutthroat Island the night it opened at our localtheater- older, downtown, 2 screen. We told all of our friends to go see it,whileit was there (we knew that seeing it on video could not compare to the'BigScreen'). Most of them had never heard of it (had anyone even seen apreview or an ad for it?) and others were more interested in seeing therecent blockbuster or God-awful VanDamme movie at the local multi-plex.Wefound this one of the most enjoyable movies we'd seen in quite a while.Beautifully filmed, full of action, we found no need to pick it apartcritically. It was fun and entertaining.Isn't that the way movies were meant to be?
There is never a dull moment in this swashbuckling action adventure with brilliant actors, thrilling action, and exciting search for thre portions of a treasure map, and exquistely recreated scenery. The scene is recreated brilliantly even if the action is hard to belive, it is a pleasure to watch.Geena Davis is sizzlingly hot as female pirate captain Morgan, and in my opinion a sexier action actress than Angelina Jolie. And Davis plays the role with such enthusiasm and panache, she is a pleasure to watch. Morgan and the slave she has bought in an auction in Port Royal, the roguish thief Shaw, must sail around the Caribbean kicking arse of bad guys pursued by her evil uncle Captain Dawg (with a smooth performance as the chief villain by Frank Langella determined to end Morgan's life after slaying her father Harry and her favourite uncle Mordechai. Adding to our friends' difficulties is being pursued by the British navy led by the corrupt and cunning Governor Ainslee (Patrick Malahide) and including the bumbling Captain Trotter. I've never seen better recreation of 17th century Port Royal. And the pirates are suitably roguish while Morgan's rough crew show her touching loyalty.
I was surprised by the quality of the film. Ridiculous plot, but this is a fantasy. Acting is mediocre but entertaining. Photography (Cinematography?) is outstanding. The visual effects are well done & fairly believable. Audio tracks are superb. The cannon fire is intense, the sword clashing crystal clear, explosions rock you if you have a decent stereo. Watched this DVD twice in 2 days. Just for the sound effects the second time. If you're looking for Oscar quality acting - wrong movie! If you're looking for entertaining fantasy with great photography and superb sound effects - here it is.
