Spike Lees semiautobiographical, 1994 film about the good and bad times for a Brooklyn family in the 70s has passion and nostalgic good feeling, but it is also a mess of random reflections and arbitrary storytelling. The centerpiece of the movie is a little girl (Zelda Harris) who views the ups and downs of her parents experiences (mom and dad are played by Delroy Lindo and Alfre Woodard), and who navigates the life of her neighborhood. Lee tosses in a lot of 70s detail (watching The Partridge Family) and other diversions (Harriss journey through suburbia), but he has no master sensibility controlling the flow of it all. The film is more wearying than anything, although bright spots include Lindos fine performance as a talented man suffering from irrelevance.

This movie is a cult favorite in my family. I've never lived in NYC, but really enjoy the way this movie makes me feel. It reminds me of the 70's and growing up in a "family". Nobody's perfect, and lord knows we fight, but at the end of the day we all love one another. I believe this to be the best Spike Lee movie and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good movie on a Saturday afternoon. You will probably cry, though.
This review is from: Crooklyn (DVD) This Spike Lee joint tells the funny, but also sad story about life growing up in Brooklyn in th Early '70's through the eyes of a no-nonsense mother, a struggling-musician father and their 5 children. The music of that time was great and you get to hear some of it throughout the movie like The Stylistics, The Staple Singers & Aretha Franklin just to name a few. Also, clips from nostaglic commercials and TV shows like The Partridge Family and Soul Train (the first season) are also featured in this story that makes this movies worth watching. And I think the formula used for CROOKLYN may have been some sort of inspiration for the 2002-2005 NBC show AMERICAN DREAMS since they were both produced by Universal Pictures.
This movie is one of my all time favorites. Once a year me and mysister watch this movie. After the movie we sit and reminisce about allof the characters that we grew up with. It takes us back to the dayswhen we played kick ball, red light green light, catch a girl get agirl, dodge ball, smear the qu%$r (known today as rugby)...all of whichI'm sure are banned today. This movie is nostalgia in its purest form. If you grew up in theconcrete jungle you will laugh to tears. The acting is outstanding andthe cinematography is brilliant. Big ups to the Lee family for helpingall of us to remember the good IL days.
If you're wondering which Spike Lee film to watch first, if you're a littleworried that you won't like his work, Crooklyn is a good one to start with.I certainly don't want to express disdain for his more polemic works, whichrepresent some of the best work the cinema has to offer, but it mightintimidate some people. Crooklyn, written by Lee, his sister, and hisbrother, seems to be a representation of their childhood in Brooklyn, mostlytold from the sister's point of view, named Troy in this film. It's mostly agreat film about childhood, among the best ever made. It's a marvelousexperience. However, Lee trips a lot in the scenes which take place when Troy is livingwith her aunt in the South. First off, the scenes are filmed with a wideraspect ratio than the rest of the film and then are pulled to fit theoriginal aspect ratio. The result is that everything is pulled out ofproportion. I'm assuming that Lee did this to represent a distorion, a worldout of whack or something of the sort. Well, it doesn't work. Every minuteof those scenes are annoying for that reason. To boot, the characters in theSouth are underdeveloped, as well as the situation in general, andeverything is treated like with smarmy humor, the religious aunt and thelittle dog and so forth. Luckily those scenes are short. It feels almost asif Lee aborted this section of the film. The rest of the film is simplywonderful. 9/10.
This is a great movie to watch and it's also one of my favorite movies. Highly Recommended
There is much to commend "Crooklyn". Each shot is composed with a level of craftsmanship and creativity approaching Hitchcock, and the rich visual ideas just keep coming at you. In particular, I loved how the glue sniffers moved along the sidewalk upside down to suggest their state of mind, and the way the whole Maryland episode was shot in a smashed-in distored fashion to underscore that it was "squeaky clean" suburbia that was stifling and strange (and thus potentially damaging) to little Troy, not her crowded Brooklyn neighborhood. And what's nice is that these visual ideas don't exist is a vacuum, but are housed in a genuinely good movie. The episodic story is funny, touching, involving, and rings true from start to finish. The movie also has what must be the funniest sight gag involving someone opening a sofa-bed in the history of movies. But to say more would be a crime-- see it for yourself! And, rest assured, you'll enjoy the rest of "Crooklyn", too.
Oh this is a good movie! I first saw it when I was maybe around 9 or 10, I loved it! Its about a girl growing up with her family probably around the 70's in a city of New York. A Very good movie!
Spike Lee takes viewers into the life of the Carmichael family, and a leap back to the 1970's.The Carmichaels experience one wild and crazy summer in the Brooklyn neighborhood that has good times and bad times as anybody else has. Though the family fights alot throughout the movie, they also bring rich and remarkable experiences into their home.
this is a must-see it is funny a little bit sad. it is a great film, it was very realistic. great, terrific, charming, what else can i say about this movie!!! i have watche it so many time GREAT MOVIE GO WATCH IT NOW!!!!
IT'S A FUNNY& GREAT MOVIE. IT SHOWED THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIVING I NEW YORK VERSUS VISITING VIRGINIA. I CAN'T EXPLAIN THE REST.
I belive that this movie was a great story of anger, love, and trying to overcome the impossible. I really enjoyed the way Spike Lee protrayed his life living in Brooklyn and how they tried to overcome the death of there mother.
This was the first movie done by Spike Lee that I have ever seen, and I sawthis movie by accident. Out of all of his films, why is this one of theleast known? It is worth seeing, because so many things work. It'sdefinitely one of the most thematic movies I have ever seen, and I candefinitely relate to many of Spike Lee's memories. It is sad, but it isalso hopeful. Alfre Woodard was awesome, and I definitely think that she isone of the best unrecognized actresses in the US today. Delroy Lindo playedhis character well too. The relationship between Troy and her brothers wasespecially memorable and so universal! The best scenes in the movieshowcase the children in front of the television. This movie was on theverge of greatness but it didn't capture it just because some parts of themovie were melodramatic and drawn out. The movie itself was about 15minutes too long.
Troy is a bright, beautiful little girl growing up in a fairly large family in Brooklyn. She is delightfully brash and original, traits she undoubtedly inherited from her indomitable mother. Her gentle father, a musician, is a soft hearted dreamer who leaves the more practical aspects of family living such as guidance, business issues and discipline to the no-nonsense mother.Troy gets a taste for life outside of Brooklyn when she spends part of a summer visiting an aunt and uncle who live out of state. Their adopted daughter, raised as an only child, teaches Troy some of the finer points of independence -- Troy does not have her brothers to rely on with this family.Matters come to a head when Troy's mother dies. Her father and other concerned neighbors help keep the family together in a pinch and it is Troy herself, the bright, beautiful little girl who really radiates hope throughout this ordeal.
This review is from: Crooklyn (DVD) This was a great deal and I received the item in less than 2 days. I would purchase from this seller again.
This review is from: Crooklyn (DVD) I love this movie. I use to watch it back in the day on HBO. Never new what is was called. Years later I found it on amazon. I was excited when it came in. The way the kids grew up reminds me of the days I spent at my friends house growing up. Their mother reminds me of my ex boss/friend. This is a great movie that touches your heart. Specially the ending when the only girl, Tory, has to take her mothers place.
This film is probably one of the best films ever produced from an autobiographical point of view. It's depiction of the 70s and the world through the eyes of a child is so well crafted that you "lose" yourself in this film. It literally transforms you and takes you back to this time and you totally relate to the experiences, the love, the anger, the joy, the sadness that exists in this family. Alfre Woodard and Delroy Lindo give performances that are just too good to put into words. But, folks, the work of the young actress who is at the center of this movie is absolutely astonishing. She is completely believable and in my opinion born to play this role. How they found her just goes to prove that probably the strongest talent that Spike Lee has, among his many, is his ability to cast his films. This little woman steals the movie from every accomplished actor/actress in this movie and I can't imagine it having worked without her. This is a must see film and should be watched when you have some quiet time and want to relax and enjoy a good, heartwarming, film about love, family, triumph and tragedy, friendship, and above all, youth and innocence. A brilliant film.

Although I wouldn't say this is a great Lee film, it is still verysolid. There isn't a story as such, instead it is a love letter tochildhood and family life in Brooklyn. Imagine Radio Days, includingthe sentimental streak. The actors are great and this movie only goes to prove that DelroyLindo is one of the best actors around. Zelda Harris as the young girl,Troy, is also brilliant. Alfre Woodard is the pivot of the film, aroundwhich most of the film revolves around - even if she has less thanTroy.Tonally the film doesn't quite click. Sometimes the original music isquite sour and does not fit with the images. Some scenes seem forced. But the amazing soundtrack helps put things right.Even though the film isn't perfect, it has a great soundtrack and avery unique take on things.
This is one of the funniest and sad movie I have ever saw. It is about a little girl name troy(Zelda Harris) who lives in Brooklyn and has hard times with family, friends, and neighbors. The movie may sound sad but it is funny. only the end of the movie is the sadest part but I am not going to tell you why. Just see the movie! I love this movie every time I see it. It is FUNNY! The soundtrack is awesome! It had most of my favorite 70's songs.
This movie has no point. It is a series of random events that sometime relate to one another. The acting was descent, but the lack of plot nd story made the movie annoying to watch. You will find yourself waiting for the movie to end and then wishing for it to do so.
