Crimson Tide

Instability in Russia results in the deployment of the the nuclear submarine Alabama. Russian rebels have taken over a nuclear missile site and are fueling them for a possible strike against the USA. Tensions run high undersea, when the launch message is received, followed by an incomplete followup. Could the followup message have been to cancel the earlier orders?

Exciting Movie. What Mistake do you Prefer?

In My studies some Years ago I learnt that Complex Systems can make TwoTypes of Mistake. What Mistake do you Prefer?a) System Works when it should not.b) System does not Work when it Should! The more you make sure (b) does not happen the likeliness of (a) happeningis greater.Another example is Balloons in cars. If they go off by mistaketheycan cause a serious Accident.I was Taught that with Nuclear Weapons they Prefer B toA.Supposing that A Nuclear War just Broke out because of a simple technicalmistake..."Crimson Tide" Brings up these Issues in a convincing way. Also the Moral Issue of Obedience in a Army of a Democracy.I voted 8 of 10.Saw it on Israeli TV January 2002.P.S. They should of had a Spare Radio Somewhere...

A high-tech, cold war version of Mutiny On The Bounty

Despite the aforementioned title of this review, Crimson Tide is without a doubt the best cold-war thriller since the 1968 MGM film Ice Station Zebra. However, the conflict between the characters played remarkably by Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington, as well as the mutiny on board the U.S.S. Alabama, is unsurprisingly paralled to the mutiny on the Royal British ship, the H.M.S. Bounty. This downfall to the script is only minor. British director Tony Scott (brother of Ridley Scott) presents audiences with a raw, explosive, brutal, and tense film that truly recaptures the era of the Cold War, and a time when the United States and Soviet Russia were enemies. Even the clash of wills between both the characters played by Hackman and Washington were intense. One wishes that Washington had just given Hackman the missile launch key, instead of being given the left hook twice. If there is one rule that new officers should learn, it is this. You do not turn any order into a debate with a seasoned veteran who has "been there and done that." Overall, a remarkable film with excellent acting, a semi-solid plot, and powerful soundtrack. It is certainly more entertaining than visiting the website of ACRENSHAW - Computer Primadonna.

Give me a break!

This review is from: Crimson Tide [VHS] (VHS Tape) First of all, Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington are two of my favorite actors. That said, as an ex-submariner I found this movie to be absolutely laughable and an insult to those of us who have served in the "Silent Service". Yes, it does raise some interesting questions, especially at the end, but the way it was done did nothing to give most people anything resembling the workings of an American nuclear submarine. I can only hope someone will get it right one of these days.

Dynamite entertainment all around

The plot: Russian rebels have taken over a nuclear missile base in Russia and threaten to strike. A nuclear submarine, the Alabama, is sent out to the area and receives a transmission to launch nukes at the site, the preliminary steps to what will be World War III. While tangling with a Russian sub, they receive another transmission but it was only partially retrieved. Now the clock is ticking to launch the missiles and there is mutiny aboard the Alabama as to whether they should launch or try to retrieve the full transmission in case there is a change of plans. CRIMSON TIDE couples edge-of-your-seat tension with stellar acting by the leads to add up to one of the best thrillers of the 90's. Washington and Hackman both offer tour-de-force performances, which seems to go to another level when playing off of each other in their shared scenes. The rest of the supporting cast is solid, as are the much overlooked special effects and intricately replicated sets. CRIMSON TIDE ranks as Tony Scott's best work, and he paces the film at breakneck speed until the ultimate showdown between the Hackman and Washington for command of the vessel. Dynamite entertainment all around.

What a face off!

\+++**SPOILER**+++/I saw this movie the other day on Sky Movies and had been told it wasreally good so i thought i'd check it out, plus, one of my favouriteactors is in it, Gene Hackam so i had to see him...Iv'e never been that 'hyped' about Washington, even though he was greatin 'remember the titans', but he was excellent! I think during themovie i was cheering for him and not Hackman..With nearly all movies, you have a good guy and a bad guy, maybe not asobvious as the likes of Spider-man but like 'runaway jury', there was abad guy, even if they werent flying around killing everyone, but thereis nearly always a bad guy and a good guy and that proved the point inCrimson Tide...Gene Hackman was the bad guy being the power obsessed Captain whowouldn't listen to reason and believed war was the answer, while DenzilWashington was the good guy being the executive officer who believed inpatience in order to avoid war..The film was basically about a battle between the two most importantmembers on board the battle ship fighting for command to launch thenuclear weapons, or not...The film ended with Denzil washing being in the right as far asavoiding war with Gene Hackman taking early retirement and surprisinglyshowing good will by not dragging Denzil down with him, but putting himforward for promotion...This is an excellent film...10/10 Worth the slice of pie

A must-see.

Typically I walk out of action films thinking: "Not bad, for an actionfilm." I walked out of "Crimson Tide" thinking: "Not bad, for *any* kindofa film." "Crimson Tide" is an exceptional movie. Tense, claustrophobic,action-packed, well-acted. The audience is treated to an incredibleroller-coaster that takes twists and turns galore before the dramaticclimax. The acting is superb. Both Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington are on fire, giving the audience two enormously compelling characters to watch. Also ofnote is the music, which perfectly captures the drama of thefilm.Outstanding. Simply outstanding.

Great movie!

This review is from: Crimson Tide (DVD) Great movie! It has a lot of tension. It has a great ending. Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington are great in this movie.

Hackman tries to carry Washington

While I'm not usually into quick statements as a review (it happensthough) I can sum this movie up quite easily.SPOILER Denzel was so bad that there was an ovation in our theater whenGene's character slugged him. Gene was supposed to be the bad guy butyou're rooting for him throughout the movie and just hoping that Denzelgets what he deserves. Unfortunately, it's Denzel near the height ofhis career and nothing bad can happen to Denzel! SPOILER DONE The movie was unfortunate and predictable. Gene Hackman put up ashining performance but it isn't enough to want to watch this movie.Denzel has fans though that will love him no matter how poorly he acts.

A classic thriller in High-Def!!!

This review is from: Crimson Tide [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I've had this blockbuster film on DVD for many years and was all too happy to upgrade to the Blu-Ray version of "Crimson Tide" recently. The picture is STUNNING in high def and the sound is AWESOME in Dolby 5.1 DTS! The viewing experience is exceptional with details on-screen and life-like audio that enraptures you and gives you that "being there" feeling. "Crimson Tide" on Blu-ray is a welcomed addition to my growing collection of classic films re-issued in the best media format to ever watch movies at home. I cranked my Pioneer Elite THX Digital Receiver with Boston Acoustic Surround Speakers with Sub-woofer which brought the movie audio to life with awesome effect! Now, if they (the respective studios) would only hurry up and release "Bad Boyz II", "Jurassic Park", and "Apollo 13" on Blu-ray... What's taking so long???

Good Submarine Action-movie

Tony Scott has made a lot of great action-movies, such as Spy Game, Enemy ofthe State, Top Gun and not to mention True Romance as my favourtie Scottmovie. Crimson Tide is no exception. A very suspenseful thriller, whichdelivers everything, a good action-thriller should deliver with excellentperformances from Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, memorableaction-scenes and quotes. While the movie has to stand down to the classicDas Boot and Hunt for Red October, it is far superior to the more or lessunimaginative U-571 still making Crimson Tide to a good submarine movie. When comparing with Scott's other movies, True Romance is still the only oneto beat Crimson Tide while Spy Game hits the same rank7,5 out of 10.

Fast paced, exciting, edge of your seat entertainment!

Every time I've watched Crimson Tide, I'm always shocked to see just howinvolved in it I get. From the visceral intensity of Tony Scott's masterfuldirection, to Hans Zimmer's top notch score, to the stunning multi-coloredvisuals, to the somewhat familiar but perfectly executed writing. This, tome, is what Hollywood filmmaking is all about. Story and visuals givenequal importance. The second hour of this film is possibly the mostcontinually involved and exciting I've seen, or at least in recent memory. A modern classic.

Excellent

Possibly the best naval movie ever. Denzel Washington gives an excellentperformance and he was cast perfectly. The rest of the cast was also pickedperfectly. I didn't see a single flaw in this movie and that is thescreenwriter's and director's performance. The story goes by a mixedRussian code that confuses the US by either making them decide to bombRussia if the code is bad or not bomb them and possibly be bombed if themessage is good.Overall the entire movie is shining through and the acting is absolutelyperfect. The direction, writing, and everything else is just perfect. Rating 10 out of 10.

Nope, this picture doesn't bear thinking about, but, if you resist that nasty temptation, setting all your mental gauges at Dead Slow, the flow of the action will see you through.

A Classic!

This movie was one of my favorites. It is full of suspense if you like those kind of movies, it really makes you wonder what will happen next. Though the end is predictable, it does not affect the quality of the movie.

Good action, almost war, movie set in a submarine.

Where does "Crimson Tide" get it's name? The name of the sub is the USSAlabama, and the Alabama football team are the "Crimson Tide."Gene Hackman as the captain and Denzel Washington as his 'ex-o' aregreat. This is Denzel's first actual battle assignment. Gene is thetough, seasoned veteran. Vladimir Radchencho, played by Daniel VonBargen (we actually only see him in TV news clips), is a Russiandissident threatening to take over Russia and their military might andsend nuclear warheads to the USA. The Alabama and crew are sent on amission to deliver "pre-emptive" nuclear strikes, and they get theirorder. However, a new message is being received, but interrupted, during a subdogfight in which the Alabama comes out victorious. So, Denzel wants tohold off until the partial message can be verified, in case it cancelsthe order to send nuclear weapons. Gene doesn't, and a near mutinyoccurs. The suspense comes down to who will prevail - the old captain who wantsto get on with business, or the new 'Ex-o', who wants to avoid nuclearholocaust. There is plenty of action, but the opposing groups ofsailors carrying guns and threatening to blow each others' heads offgets a bit unbelievable. Still, I rate it a solid "8" of 10, and goodfor anyone who likes action movies.2007 update: I just saw it again, on DVD, and found it to be an evenbetter movie than I had recalled it being. Gene Hackman is just superbin his role.

Wow! What an adrenaline rush!

Crimson Tide is awesome in the way it creates intensity and non-stopadrenaline rushes using scenes full of action, and scenes that aren't. Thetorpedo attack with the Russian sub was so fast-paced and packed with energythat it makes you bounce in your seat. Gene Hackman and Denzel Washingtongave awesome performances, and their growing tension towards each other isenough to keep the excitement at a consistent high through the last half ofthe film. I don't appreciate how Hackman's character is regarded by mostmoviegoers as a mad man. He is just simply a seasoned, tough-as-nailsmilitary officer who must assume that the US is in danger, and he must stickby the orders that require him to go to drastic measures to protect us. Thedirector did a good job at raising the tension, even though the ending wasvery predictable. The message at the very start of the film set the perfecttone. The entire film is in a way scary by making us wonder if what wouldhappen in a situation like this, and how could the military establish properoperating procedures for it. However, the message at the end of the filmre-establishes some hope. 9/10, and I love the creative title.

A Suspenseful And Dramatic Story. Five Stars!

My bargain-rack movie for last night was "Crimson Tide" starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. Good movie. Well done! It was something that could have come right out of the Cold War, but this was in the 90s. The story involved a nuclear-armed U S submarine (the Alabama) operating in the north-central Pacific. A renegade Russian general, involved in a civil-war conflict threatened to launch nuclear warheads toward the U S and the American sub was there as a possible counter attack. The timing of everything was crucial. The American sub was under order to file it's warheads at a precise time, unless otherwise directed and the skipper (Gene Hackman) was not one to question orders. However, in the meantime, the U S sub had an encounter with a Russian sub and was damaged to the point where they could neither send nor receive further orders. The last available order was that the warheads were to be launched and that set up an internal conflict within the sub resulting in the overthrowing of the skipper (Hackman) by the second officer (Washington) and some regarded this as a mutiny and it set up a second mutiny, all within the confines of a damaged and sinking submarine. Well, It was a suspenseful and dramatic story, to be sure, and might result in a catastrophic nuclear conflict and World War III in the balance. It was a good tense movie and the acting was excellent. Believe me, One felt as if they might be on that sub. Personally, I felt that it was the best acting I've ever seen for Gene Hackman. Washington was excellent also, but was not as believable as Hackman. The rest of the cast was excellent, as was the directing. Five stars!Gary Peterson

Embarrassing for this sailor to watch (spoilers?)

While I have to admit, this film had good action and a decent plot, therewere too many distracting flaws that made it uncomfortable to watch. Whywas everyone running around when the ship dove? Why would a Sailor try totighten sprung bolts on a seawater flange and ignore an evacuation order? What is bilge bay anyway? Highly unlikely a submarine Sailor would getintoa fistfight over a comic book character when are better things slug it outfor. How about that video game sonar display? Any dog that p***ed on mydeck would be stuffed into the TDU. If an officer tried to make me dopushups, he would be looking at my middle finger instead of me bobbing upand down on the deck. The officers I have had the pleasure of serving withwere not that petty. If I stage a mutiny, I will take all of the guns outof the small arms locker and give them to my comrades instead of leavingsome for the other guys to use against me. Little chance any executiveofficer that placed his CO under arrest and took control of the boat fromhim only to lose it again would be recommended for his own command. I knowthat portraying submarine life as it usually is would put most people tosleep, but a film about the submarine service should not be embarrassingforSailors to watch.

Best movie

This review is from: Crimson Tide (Amazon Instant Video) I've seen this movie before and yet each time I see it I'm at the edge of my seat. What a great movie

Decent Treatment, But Iffy Editing

The original DVD release of Crimson Tide occurred at a time before the trends of including cut scenes, commentary, and animated menus. While it makes sense to re-release the film with what we now considered the standard features, missing from the original, I found the overall experience somewhat disappointing. For die-hard fans of Crimson Tide, this DVD is worth getting just to see the 7 minutes or so (Original release was 116 minutes, this version is supposed to be 123) of exra footage. The title menu is much nicer than before, and the addition of the documentary is a great bonus. But under deleted scenes, we're shown only three very short "scenes": an extra line of dialogue onboard the crew bus, a longer version of Radchenko's speech to the reporter, and a half-minute long nearly silent waiting scene before the panel at the end of the movie. All three are shown as raw footage, without any cleaning, or explanation. All of the content in the deleted scenes is in the primary feature, in a cleaned-up and nearly seamless state. None of the new footage is more than a few seconds in length, but it's clear that all of it consists of short pieces of dialogue removed either for time constraints or clarity. What this means is that throughout the movie we're treated to bursts of extraneous dialogue that the editor had originally removed, usually for a reason. It's interesting from the point of view of a film student, but as a consumer release I think it degrades from the experience ever so slightly. Crimson Tide is all about suspense, and anything that distracts the focus of the audience is consequently lowering the quality of the movie. None of it is very overt, but there's enough of it that it might harm the experience of a first-time viewer of the film.Overall, the extras contained in this release make it a must-have for previous fans, but for new buyers I would still recommend the original DVD cut.
