Remember the "Stonehenge" joke in This Is Spinal Tap? Imagine that joke, or something similar, stretched all the way out to the edges of a 100-minute movie, so thin that it's transparent.
Comic timing, themes of tolerance and commitment and the marriage of farce and empathy lift the film above the mockumentary pack.
Confetti is both a curse and a blessing to those looking to Britain for comedy film; get on board with it and you'll have a riot but fail to pick up on the experimental nature of its humour and you'll likely be lost.
Christopher Guest can breathe easy, his crown as the Master of improvfeature films is under no threat at all. Aware of the positive reviewsthat "Confetti" had generated, I was anticipating a well-conceived,superbly performed laugh-fest that was a cut above. Was I ever in for arude shock! Martin Freeman, Jessica Stevenson, Julia Davis and AlisonSteadman alone may hold their heads high. These performers acquittedthemselves well in spite of overwhelming opposition from an underworked concept, a total lack of effective direction or judiciousediting and a cast of over-actors, out of their depth and intent oncaricaturing their roles to within an inch of their life. Without theentire tennis-themed nuptials, you would be guaranteed a slightly lessawful film, so woefully bad was each teeth-grindingly drawn out sceneinvolving these dull and unwatchable characters going about theirirritating and unconvincing lives. It was a great shock for me to laterlearn that the actress who limped along as the female half of thisunpleasant partnership, was actually a graduate of the highly esteemedRADA. As for the actor (and I hesitate in labeling him thus) portrayingJosef, such inexcusable miscasting and lack of conviction has rarelybeen seen since Keanu Reeves was afforded the opportunity to mangle thebard in "Much Ado About Nothing". This film is laboured, unoriginal, heavy on predictability and stereotypes, and yet full of wastedopportunities to be genuinely fresh and amusing. I noted that a fellowboard user gushingly stated that he had not seen anything as funny as"Confetti" since "The 40 Year Old Virgin". That about sums it up forme!
Deserved of it cult status, truly a great comedy, genuine acting andkept me going right till the end. A must watch comedy, I have never written an opinion on this forum(which is pretty obvious)and this film has made me sit up and say whata brilliant film this is. If I have one qualm, it is with the extras on the DVD, which I wishedthey had included the out-takes and cock-ups which it deserved, but thefilm itself is a little gem.10/10 For so many actors on top form in one film.Sorry it is not up to the high standards of other reviewers, but theintention is there :)
A textbook example of what happens When Improv Falls Flat.
A more assured hand could have made it better.
This British-made and very comic mockumentary portrays the conflicts and potential mayhem inherent in the run-up to any wedding and multiplies it by not three but about ten, as a wedding magazine launches a self-promoting competition among three couples for the most unusual marriage ceremony. Here everyone is at loggerheads, including the editors of the magazine, and the pair of wedding planners who attempt to pull it all off with a paltry budget and the less than enthusiastic cooperation of all involved. Very much in the spirit of Christopher Guest's "Waiting for Guffman," which helped create the genre, this hugely enjoyable film eventually sweeps all promise of disaster aside and ends triumphantly with all the excitement of - well, a Busby Berkeley musical. The DVD has at least a half hour of additional scenes as entertaining as the rest of the movie. There are also three alternative endings, plus filmographies of much of the cast. Look for Martin Freeman, from BBC's "The Office," as one of the beleaguered bridegrooms.
The search for the most original wedding of the year results in Confetti, a lively mockumentary-style comedy that is as funny as it is spontaneous.
Simplicity can either work for a film or against it. Confetti justhappens to rise above the fad of reality TV enough to comment on it andon some of our comfort zones. There may be some repetitive reaction shots and either you appreciatethe inclusive spirit of the film or you don't. That may influence a fewratings.Martin Freeman (Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Shaun of the Dead)once again turns his reaction-to-absurd-surroundings schtick to newheights. The rest of the cast is excellent but he manages to ground themovie.Though the directing is deceptively simple for much of the film it isdefinitely not just coverage. There are brilliant shock value momentsand sustained beats of comic discomfort. Despite the mock documentaryformat, the ending presentations allow a display of razzle dazzlestyle.
The characters are stereotypes and the action is mostly sitcom-ish, and the film seems to invite an audience to laugh at the characters rather than with them.
...doesn't have a whole lot to offer in terms of laughs or even character development...
I went to see confetti the other day. Lots of people were saying thatit wasn't going to be very good or that is was going to be lame, but itwas actually quite good. Even though it was a film it was made a lotlike a documentary with camera's following the couples, this was OKthough i thought. The gay wedding planners were a laugh at one point itwas even them breaking down in tears instead of the couples. But bewarned there is quite a lot of nudity in this movie (naked men playingbadminton etc. on a naturist camp) But over all it was actually A lotbetter than I expected. One of the best lines for me had to be the onewhere one of the men says to his wife-to-be 'Can't you get it into yourthick head that I do respect you!' It's a good laugh for anyone whowants to go see it. x
I really wanted to enjoy this one. I great cast made up from shows Ilove, an interesting premise - what could go wrong? Well for starters,a lack of a decent plot. There's a flimsy storyline about three couplesgetting their (insane) dream weddings, and the preparations that leadto the wedding, but this appears to be nothing more than a narrativethread so they could decide what order to have the jokes in. Secondly, all the couples only have one joke. Admittedly, for two out of thethree couples it is a funny joke, but it wears thin towards the end andcould easily have been trimmed to make the film lighter. However, onecouple (Josef and Isabelle) are just relentlessly annoying, their storyfalling flat. Finally, all the actors appear to be playing their sitcomroles. Martin Freeman plays his character as at least a relative of Timfrom the office. Steven Mangan is Guy from Green Wing. The guys fromPeep show are their characters, Jimmy Carr is Jimmy Carr. Only JessicaStevenson is allowed to make a new character from herself, nowhere nearto Daisy from Spaced (which, would've made an interesting addition tothe film). But whilst I love Green Wing, The Office and Peep Show, itdoesn't mean I want to see these characters merely transferred to film. However, despite these criticisms, the film is funny, with scenes thathad me laughing loudly in the cinema. Unfortunately, it's nowhere nearas good as it could've been with more work, more jokes and originalcharacters.
Well its a typical British movie. That being its pretty poor. What isit with British films and British filmmakers. I can't remember the lastdecent British film. Its not even funny. The only reason to watch thismovie is Jessica Stephenson. But when other reviewers mentioned comictalents in this movie, there isn't any. Martin Freeman, from Officefame, was not funny in the office. He was the unfunny one where as themain comic talent from the Office was obviously Ricky Gervais. Theothers mentioned are from poor comedy shows on British TV and when youadd that to an unfunny script you have a typically unfunny Britishfilm. The other actors I recognised were bit part players from thegreat Alan Partridge series. Them being the guy who played DAN from the2nd series and Lynn, Alans much maligned PA. So this film. As a comedy, its unfunny. If your expecting a great comedy, forget it!
Such a simple concept, a wedding, well three weddings, and as itsuggests it lots of fun and laughter without the serious note of 4weddings and a funeral.Considering most of this was ab lib, absolutely amazing. Funny fromstart to finish, excellent story line and visual comedy as well aswritten.Definitely recommend, but not for those who are looking for weddingideas (the main reason I went to see the film really, but unless yourlooking for a completely out there wedding, this isn't the film foryou).
This Film has an ass kicking humor and excellent crew cast.Don't Miss out this all time of totally excellent opportunity of humor, and stomach age.. ;)The story itself is nothing to get exited about but it is the humor andthe characters that is worth seeing.Don't miss out, just run along down to the nearest store and buy itdon't go to the movies, too much noise from all the other laughingpeople. ;)Miss a little bit more comedy scenes, but it is still enough, but whystop there.. hahaha
I thought this film was great. I was laughing out loud in the cinema, and so was everyone else! The idea of the film is witty and the actingis brilliant. Great choice of cast. I love every character! Theimprovising acting is amazing. The jealousy from the couples is wickedand the film seems strangely realistic. Definitely one to watch (butnot with grandma....surprising amount of nudity!) ... Ultimately amovie for adult humour (avoid showing the kids!) The end result for thethree weddings is so funny and I guarantee you'll have a smile on yourface by the end of the film! I'm definitely planning to buy Confetti -well worth the cash!
While the situations are pretty funny and the actors are committed, they're not ripe with hilarity.
Confetti may be mostly forgettable, but like bubbly at a wedding, the impression it leaves is light and effervescent.
