Clueless

Cher, a high school student in Beverly Hills, must survive the ups and downs of adolescent life. Her external demeanor at first seems superficial, but rather it hides her wit, charm, and intelligence which help her to deal with relationships, friends, family, school, and the all-important teenage social life.

A nice teen comedy

The ads for this movie made Cher seem like a total snob and very superficial. Cher, however, matures throughout this movie. I loved the way that she was totally clueless about her own lovelife!!! It was so ironic that she was the matchmaker for Skye and Elton and her teachers. I also loved the way that this movie poked fun of teens and the "teen lingo".

Everybody loves clueless

I mean, like, if you didn't then why did you watch the whole thing???? I mean, like, for real.Seriously though, I love the way they take a basically PLOTLESS movie and make a cult movie that changes the way a nation dresses and speaks. As a native to California, being outty has always been the thing to be...and I loved to see the phrase brought back, along with the carefree thoughts about life.Clueless if a great...I've got nothing to do, I'll watch this movie kinda thing...and those movies, in this stressed-out madness called life, get a 5 every time.

No brains, no problem.

Cher is a spoiled rich brat who lives in a mansion with her father. Shemanipulates the teachers into giving her good grades and she helps herfriends find love. There is no really good plot to this movie. It'sabout a stupid rich girl who makes everything go her way. Then she hasa crush on her stepbrother and denies it and then snap! It was like"Mean Girls" but I actually liked Cady in "Mean Girls." At least "MeanGirls" had a moral to the story at the end. No one in this movie reallydoes anything worthy. So Cher finds love for her two teachers. Whocares because I sure didn't care at all. I was hoping for a good moralto the story but it was just about the dumbest blonde in any moviepossible. The only part I liked was the stepbrother until he started tolike Cher. Then he got really dumb. Paul Rudd could have done a lotbetter.

Cute, if clueless

Like a lot of chick flicks, this movie is cute, if a bit clueless at times. The plot meanders around, with a few characters jumping in and out in importance. There isn't really anything amounting to a final confrontation. What I do like about it is that main character, Cher, is a clueless Valley girl but also eminently likable. She's popular and superficial at first, but also has responsibilities and doesn't just sleep around. It's easier to feel more sympathetic towards her, even if the plot is a bit unfocused.

A light hearted comedy based on Jane Austin's Emma

When I first heard of this movie way back in the mists of time (okayonly four years ago) I wasn't particularly interested, but then Idecided that I would pop along to a screening that the Film Society atAdelaide University was showing it and I decided to go along and waspleasantly surprised. The critics loved this movie and I also think itwas pretty good as well, good enough to hire it to see if it was worthpurchasing. My conclusion: I won't purchase it but I wouldn't stopanybody else from doing so. The reason I wouldn't buy it is because itcomes out with relationships coming together and working out and it isa really happy ending type movie. This is not bad but it is notsomething that raises the emotions too much.Clueless is a movies of lines, and Ebert has fun quoting them. My twofavourite are "my dad's a litigator, that's the scariest type oflawyer, even our maid fears her," and "is that Josh, isn't it amazingthat when he comes to a party he finds the only Adult. It is as if heis trying to be boring." Clueless is a movie of smart lines with ironictwists and has a pretty good mix of satire, though it not scathing andthere is no attack at the American society. When creating this movie, Amy Heckerling actually went into a BeverlyHills' high school to do some research of the language used and ingeneral the way of life of the students. It is as if she is doing aremake of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, though this movie has verylittle similarities. She seems to have something against sex becauseher two main characters, Dionne and Cher, are only interested insleeping with one person only, and that is the person that they plan tospend the rest of their lives with. In a way this movie is idealisticbecause in the end we are led to believe that the people whom thecharacters have joined up with will last forever.Like Fast Times, Heckerling focuses on the females. This is a moviethrough the eyes of a female and is about females. Not only to wefollow her around, but we delve into her mind knowing everything thatshe is thinking. The voice over representing her thoughts is used veryfrequently in this movie and thus we know everything that Cher isthinking. We know what she thinks of other people, and what her plansare. We even follow her thoughts to the realisation of who she reallyloves.Ebert seems more interested in the realism and uniqueness of thecharacters. I agree with him that Cher's father is a well builtcharacter that loves his daughter and knows what is going on. They havea good relationship, yet he doesn't let her get away with everything, including driving the car without a license. Tai, the looser that comesto the school and is remade by Cher and Dionne, changes from being adag who hangs around with druggies, to a high society girl that picksand chooses her friends. Josh (Paul Rudd) is also a very well madecharacter who is intelligent and caring. Cher is simply superb for weknow her thoughts and we see how she comes to understanding of things. This movie isn't a sex-romp comedy, it is simply a comedy and thecomedy is very good. It contains some of the most wittiest dialogue Ihave ever heard (bar Clerks which is in a league of its own) though itis not the style of movie that I would delve into. I prefer dark moviesand political criticism and satire (though my satire is far from beingfunny).Something that I did not know when I originally wrote this piece wasthat this movie is based upon the Jane Austin novel Emma. I have notread the novel (ergo I did not see the connection until after). AmyHeckerling is said to have replied, when asked to write a movie forteenagers, that she would write one based on Emma as that was a bookshe read as a teenager. Granted, I am not a big fan of Jane Austin, butthat does not mean that she is not a good write. In fact, she did verywell for the time in which she was writing (despite not beingrecognised until at least 150 years after her death). Based on theoutline of Emma that I have read, this movie is actually quite faithfulto the original, though my understanding is that Emma gets herself intoa lot of trouble with her meddling in other people's affairs, whereasCher does not seem to get into anywhere near as much trouble in thisfilm. Further, one starts off finding Cher very annoying, but as we getto understand her more through the film (and her reasons for rejectingElton) we actually begin to develop a soft spot for her character. Assuch, this does make for quite a good movie.

Good Movie but bad acting

This is labeled as a classic of its genere. Its a really greatteeny-boppermovie but it has the worst acting I've ever seen. I think AliciaSilverstoneand alot of others were mis-cast. The only one who seemed right for herpartwas Tai. But if you look past the acting the movie is actually enjoyable. Most teen girls love it.

Defining a generation?

`Clueless' is probably the equivalent of `The Breakfast Club' for the 90's generation. I went to school with these kids; sadly...I was one of these kids. `Clueless' is also one of the smartest comedies to come out in the 90's for it capitalized on everything that made teenagers of that era funny and stupid. The 90's was a much easier time. Now we have films like `thirteen' (probably the best film to come out in 2003) to describe life as a teenager...life today is just so much darker than I remember it growing up.So `Clueless' is a modern adaptation of Jane Austen's novel `Emma' and it revolves around Cher (Silverstone) who is popular and pretty and completely self centered and spoiled. She hangs out with the equally spoiled (and equally rich) Dionna (Dash) and Amber (Donovan). When Cher's step brother Josh (Rudd) comes to stay with her and her father she tries to convince him that she's not the spoiled selfish brat he accuses her of being. In an attempt to do this she decides to help ease the new girl Tai (Murphy) into popularity by giving her a makeover and hooking her up with popular boy Elton (Sisto). What makes this movie so enjoyable is the innocent charm Silverstone oozes all over the screen. She is a complete star here...so much so that it shock and upsets me that after this film she just disappeared. In fact the only actor in this film that actually moved on the stardom was Brittany Murphy, and she was the one I least expected (well not least, but she was more like number four on my list of assumed breakouts). Funny and witty and perfectly cast, `Clueless' is sure to entertain all who watch it no matter what year it is. Sure, if you grew up in the 90's it'll help. I'm sure that my kids will feel about `Clueless' the same way I feel about `The Breakfast Club' but like I always say..."to each his own."

Clever spin on Austen's story with good satire and performances

Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is a popular ditz at her local high school inBeverly Hills. She's a spoiled, pampered little princess with all theright social connections and endless wealth. However she has yet tofind a man in her life - all the Baldwins (as she and her clique offriends call guys they like) have been taken. When Cher receives a foreign exchange student, she takes her under herwing and decides to try and find her a boyfriend - ironically withouthaving her own yet. Predictability ensues.I read "Emma" in early high school as I'm sure most kids did, and themovie puts a clever spin on the tale. Alicia Silverstone issurprisingly good in her role, perfectly playing a blond bombshellwithout a brain but a good heart - only Reese Witherspoon has done sucha good job recently at portraying the west coast bimbos. (No offense tothe west coast bimbos out there.) The movie's director, Amy Heckerling, has always been rather reliable on the whole and her direction is solidhere - she could have turned "Clueless" into a crude, unfunny sexcomedy with little wit or brains, but instead she takes a ratherdubious idea for a film and transforms it into a well-made, well-acted,funny, inspired, lively, witty satire.Much better than expected.

At the feet of the ultimate range, version 1.11

Reactions to features are a very personal sort of thing. To me the ultimate movies include such as Lindsay's Mean Girls andConfessions Of A Teenage Whatever, the question of what sort of movieculture led to these happening in the way that they do is a sensiblequestion to me. In some important ways I do find these Ultimates tofollow in the footsteps of Clueless, I have to honour this feature.Minor pinnacles close to the heights of these two, such as Lindsay'sGet A Clue. Ditto.Even a movie that I found a bit too scary to rate as in that range,Mini's First Time of 2006, seemed to follow in the footsteps, too. These are all more recent than 1995 and if the change in style is toreflect changes in actual girl culture then the flow of history is inbig trouble. Those more in tune with recent features should find a lot more with afamily resemblance. I do not place American Pie in this particularfamily. To me that is male and a different sort of thing. Himalaya sortof thing.Reading the IMDb user comments for Girl Interrupted I noticed a lot ofadulation for Brittany Murphy, I could not understand it at all. Thistells me why. It tells me that the adulation is reasonable. Looking tothe actor details pages at IMDb tells me that the three main actressessuddenly got noticed in a big way after they appeared in this feature. This is an influential feature.Earlier stuff? Grease then Girls Just Want To Have Fun then Heathersfeel to be among those clearly leading to Clueless.* A schoolgirrrl story about 15s played by 18s. To that I have to screamGet A Clue, which appears to have its roots in this feature.First viewing I did think that they were actual 15s. The IMDb detailscame as a surprise. Now, most of them do look a lot older, but BrittanyMurphy can still stand out as a 15 if I avoid Get A Clue. As a kittentoo, she is as someone tied up to be an easy to lead little lamb. So, a schoolgirrrl story that is fun to watch even after a few viewingsduring the first week of purchase. Lovers of traditional good ortraditional Jane Austen might prefer to bin this one, maybe, maybe not,but some find this to be a disk that gets a lot of playing hours.* September 2009, I get the Whatever edition for its lots of backgrounddetail. This does appease my qualms, it is not made by fly on the wallas with Ridgemont but by what I can accept as okay ways. The Whateverbackground videos seemed to go out of their way to make that point andI had needed that. For me, this has to be one of the major pinnacles of DVDs. I also gotthe Paltrow version of Emma and switched off after 30 minutes, eventhough that has high appeal, a major pinnacle, to some.

Much better than I expected. But...

It's much better than I expected.Indeed it's a girlie show. But the story is heart warming. Girls performances are natural. I felt most of the flaws negligible. There is, however, one thing I have to complain about. One Asian girl in the high school wears clothes which looks like 3 or 5 years old children's. And her hair style is the same. Why should Asians be treated in such a way? I can't believe it!!

Showing my professor what I've learned

A cute, humorous movie that illustrates the ideal woman, who acts, dresses, and looks the part that many women wish they could be. The film almost appears to critique the stereotypes set on women, objectifying them ideally for the `male gaze'. Cher, who is of the white, upper class economic status, is beautiful, blond, thin and well dressed, and her friends are of the same economic status... until Cher meets Tai. Tai represents the woman who goes unnoticed, who does not reflect the feminine woman that Cher is, until Cher makes Tai a commodity; objectifying her for all men to see and allowing her to be surveyed. At the end, Cher must realize that she is smarter than people take her for (they must look beyond her blond hair, thin body, and `valley girl' attitude), but Cher must work to prove she is not so stereotypical after all.

You'll be "Rollin' With The Homies" when you see this one!

A great addition to your "Teen Movies" collection! Alicia Silverstone and Stacey Dash are beautiful and too cool for school in this flick. This movie is about high school popularity, teen experiences and definitely all about the fashion. As the most popular girls in school, Alicia and Stacey transform boring and drab Britney Murphy into "one of them". Overall the movie is done all in fun, it's bright and colorful and a must have for every girl's slumber party!

One of my teen favs...lol

Just purchaseing on DVD, I had on VHS but been phasing all those out obviously. Those are like so 1995....lol

2012-05-06 10:51:24

Could be better

The movie was as good as I remembered it but the sound quality of it was not Good.

Rob Hartill 2012-05-06 02:25:55

Probably not what you expect, which is a good thing

I've seen this film a few times now and will no doubt watchit again in the future. I remember seeing the hype andtrailersthat accompanied the release of Clueless, and I probably madeamental note to avoid it like the plague, I was sure I'dhateit.I was very pleasantly surprised by Clueless, it mocks allthosepathetic US teen/high school TV series where all the prettypeople live in some kind of fantasy land. Those shows makeme want to pull out what's left of my hair. Those shows areasfake as a politician's sincerity.Alicia Silverstone is at her best as Cher, a characteryoujust have to love and hate at the same time, but the realstarof the show is the script, the dialog is absolutely hilariousand I'd guess it's aimed at a slightly more mature audiencethan the characters in the film, I think many teens wouldmisssome of the irony. If you've never seen it, avoided it, or thought you weretoo old for it, give it a chance. You too might be pleasantlysurprised.

2012-05-05 18:20:02

Totally Golden!!

This is like, way cool. This movie is way chronic it is a must see. Anyway I'm Audi. END

2012-05-05 10:15:17

Brilliant!

Clueless is one of the funniest films I've seen! Superb, the best film Alicia Silverstone has done, it was also the first one I watched. It reminds me of what life was like at school, a real blast! I loved it that much I bought it on video, despite what everyone says, this is NOT a feminine film. I recommend it to anybody with a sense of humour

2012-05-04 20:40:45

Great Movie But I want more from a DVD

This is probably the best Emma adaptation out there (and yes, I did see the Paltrow version). Fun to watch again and again. One quibble is that the DVD doesn't have any "extras". Hopefully, this one will get re-released soon with some more material.
