This is certainly not a movie for the mind or for the soul. I won't even try to list the logical problems with this one, as my quota of 1000 words would just get me warmed up :-) Suffice it to say that if you are looking for a well-knit storyline that holds itself together, about turn right now.On the other hand, if you have an hour to fritter away and are not in a particularly picky/discriminating mood, give this one a shot. You might be surprised to find yourself grinning more often than you expected to :-)My only kudos to Dennis Hopper is his choice of Tom Berenger. This is one heck of a good thespian, and he shines, even when cast in an otherwise silly, non-entity of a movie. Sure, Erika gets her share of attention, but mostly when she's baring it. And McNamara, well, I can't remember any other movie he was in, so I'll just say he has latent talent. A little too cute for this role, maybe. You've probably read other reviews, so I won't bore you with a detailed storyline. Tom and McNamara are Navy guys sent to escort a prisoner from a Marine detention center. Turns out that the prisoner is a woman (Erika) and a slippery one at that. Several travails follow. Erika and McNamara fall for each other. Tom eventually helps the couple make off to Mexico or somewhere. Like I said, suspend your belief, all ye who enter here :-)Tom plays his part to perfection, as the gruff, hardboiled, no-nonsense, sardonic military guy. I can't see anyone else better suited to this role. Watch out for a couple of hilarious scenes, when they land up at the marine detention center, and when they take a detour on their way back to base. Pretty funny 'camaraderie' too, with McNamara and a couple of sailor pinheads who want nothing more than to yank his chain.Summary - with a couple of beers to help, what the heck, I think I actually enjoyed it!
I'll admit, when I first saw this film, in 1994, I thought it wassophomoric, with overripe performances, a brain-dead plot, and an extremelygratuitous sex scene tossed in to show off Erika Eleniak's considerableassets. However, seeing it again, recently, I came to realize this was actually asend-up of the 'good ol' boy' comedies of the seventies, the kind of 'B'movies Roger Corman produced, when he introduced directors like Ron Howard. As such, it's very enjoyable, and certainly worth another look! The premise is that of an old-fashioned service comedy, with wheeler-dealerWilliam McNamara and put-upon pal Crispen Glover pulling off one last bigscore before McNamara's discharge. Unfortunately, the scam goes awry as theyoung con artist is 'recruited' to assist grizzled vet 'Rock Reilly' (TomBerenger, spitting out dialogue with a whiskey-soaked growl) in a prisonertransfer. The prisoner turns out to be the luscious Erika Eleniak, and asshe quickly makes the first of several escape attempts, you get to see: a)exciting new uses for feminine hygiene products; b) the redneck charm of thecountryside between Charleston and North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; c)some great cameos by Dean Stockwell, Seymour Cassel, Gary Busey, MariluHenner, Fredric Forrest, and Hopper, himself (sporting a bulbous nose and ablow-up sex toy!); d) the famous Eleniak nude love scene, followed byMcNamara chasing her, naked, after she runs, again (he shows more skin thanshe does); and e) the obligatory happy ending, as Berenger proves he has a'heart of gold', and that 'love (or a healthy lust, anyway!) conquers all'.Is this a classic? Are you kidding? Then again, neither were the Cormanfilms...but as a tribute to the genre, 'Chasers' is fun, and a terrific'kick off the shoes, pop some popcorn' flick!
Erika Eleniak is a gorgeous talent that I would enjoy seeing in a string offilms showcasing her talent. She was the best thing about "Baywatch." Doyou remember her getting kissed by Eliot in E.T.? Though it was a shortscene, who could forget her? I've first followed her career in "Charles inCharge" (she played Stephanie) and in the remake of "The Blob." When shedid a Playboy centerfold and Playboy video I couldn't wait to go out and buya copy (the first and only reason I've ever purchased a Playboy). The videoshowed that there was real talent there, not just a centerfold's body. Fora former child star to take that direction in her career and have itcatapult her into stardom is unusual because most centerfolds don't have hertalent. Her performance in "Under Seige" really made her a star and theremake of "The Beverly Hillbillies" showed she was really funny as did"Pyromanic's Love Story." If only this movie would have risen to hertalent. Though Erika is really good, the movie stinks. Because of it Ithink Erika is going to be doing cheap thrillers for a while. Too bad, because she is a gifted actress and comedian that deserves roles similar toJulia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, and Meg Ryan. I will continue to watchanything she does because she is so wonderful, including this film, butshe's the only good thing about it.
THIS MOVIE IS A TYPICAL LOVE STORY WITH A STRANGE TWIST. CHECK IT OUT YOU JUST MAY LIKE IT. IT ENDS WITH THE TRADITIONAL HAPPY ENDING BUT THAT IS WHERE TRADITIONAL MOVIEMAKING ENDS WITH THIS ONE.
This review is from: Chasers (DVD) The movie actually was not bad at all....I like Berringer....Maybe a bit 'cheesy', but still funny enough to watch more then once. However, the 5 stars are for the 1 scene with Erika Elaniak. Those that have see the scene I am referring to know what I am talking about. She may not be the best actress....she's not bad..but not great...but how have we not seen her in the buff more often? How could any producer see that scene and not want her in ANY "romance" scene? While watching, my wife even commented "It's ok to drool baby..how could any normal man not drool watching this scene".....OK movie...worth watching.....but "the scene" earns it 5 stars!
Navy officials Berenger and McNamara are assigned to escort prisonerEliniak to start serving time but their trip doesn't go all thatsmoothly.Despite the presence of the terribly annoying William McNamara, Chasersis really an O.K. way to spend less than two hours. Obviously it's notas good as 1973's The Last Detail but it has it's moments. Tom Berengerand Erika Eliniak compensate for McNamara and deliver good performancesbut the array of good cameos are sorely misused. Gary Busey and CrispinGlover provide a few chuckles but Dennis Hopper, Dean Stockwell andMarilu Henner have nothing to do here.Still, if you're in a forgiving frame of mind and keep yourexpectations low this film quite alright.
"Chasers" vacillates wildly between military drama, and frat slobs onvacation silliness. There is a steady slide downhill in believability. The acting is only average, and the script well below that.Nevertheless, the movie is watchable, mainly because of the interestingsupporting cast. The best scenes are with Gary Busey, Crispin Glover, and Dennis Hopper. The real problem is that the film doesn't have aflow, with sex scenes giving way to cartoon-like silliness, kung fufighting, and ridiculous romance. I suppose if you can throw logic outthe window, there might be enough here to interest some, but that's along shot at best. - MERK
Yet another film in which a large group of star talent is wasted. DennisHopper directs this 1994 Warner Brothers release and appears briefly inthistale of two inept Navy officers (Tom Berenger, William McNamara) who haveaseries of comic misadventures while trying to escort a prisoner (ErikaEleniak) to another prison at a naval base. Awful film just features onestupid scene after another.
Forget about Erika and concentrate on cute Billy's buns and abs. Erika is an amazon and Billy is the real interest in this movie because of his fine looks and nonchalant acting. He is well worth the price of this item.
This movie is funny!! Actor Robert McNamara, the Ricky Nelson look-alike is1 day away from being done w/the Navy when he's given an assignment w/thegruff-voiced Rock Reilly (Tom Berenger) to escort a female prisoner toanother facility. They don't find out she's a female till it's too late &the 'fun' begins. She flirts w/Rock but he defiantly resists, has McNamaraby the nose, runs away, etc, etc, & the CHASE is on! Actually, the 2 fall in love, Rock (Berenger) allows them to escape, they goto an island & live happily ever after. Marilu Henner, always a pleasure towatch, is a waitress in a restaurant they all go to & that's who Rock getstogether with at the end of the film. That's nice to see since he's such a'by the book' officer who needs a good woman & some spice in his navy life.I recommend this film but I didn't like Erika Eliniak, the girl prisoner.I've never seen her again in anything & I wouldn't want to. She's tooskinny, her eyebrows are too dark & thick & her acting is just ok. She'snothing to write home about in my book. But that Tom Berenger is anotherstory!
It's not a good movie. It's not a bad movie. It's just a movie worth watching to pass the time. It was a comedy and I didn't laugh but it held my interest. I thought the sex scene with the girl who has one eyebrow didn't fit well in the movie but what the heck?
This movie has it's moments. It's entertaining but not a mega-blockbuster. You do get an under skirt view one time in the movie. No nudity.
Fairly desperate military comedy.
no movie with dennis hopper, gary busey, erika eleniak, tom berenger, dean stockwell, marilu henner deserves a rating under 5 on here. Thisis a poor mans version of movies like 16 blocks or the timelessMidnight run except the prisoner being transported here is the veryeasy on the eye Ms.Eleniak. Tom Berenger plays another gruff, maverickmilitary type well and William Mcnamara plays his rookie-about to bedischarged foil well. The plot on the face of it is absurd because Ilost count of the times Eleniak should have and could have escaped butthis is an entertaining feel-good movie and there are good cameos fromall of the above actors that keep the movie rolling. This isn't reallya family movie as there is some swearing and a rare nude scene witheleniak but this is a lot better than some of the other guff that cameout around this time.
Those two words describe this movie best. I served in the Navy for 20years, as an enlisted man, with a father who was also in the Navy andserved in a Brig Recovery Unit. Bad acting coupled with failed attemptsat humor are the watchwords for this film. Plus the numerousinaccuracies make watching it as a Sailor unbearable. One reviewerposted that this was a good example of how life is in the Navy . . .the French Navy perhaps, but not the United States Navy. Want a goodNavy brig movie, watch the Last Detail. Want a good Navy comedy, watchOperation Petticoat or Down Periscope or even the horrible McHale'sNavy movie. Why not 1 out of 10 . . . Erika Eleniak is good looking.
Is this your typical women in chains navy transport love story? Maybe, hell, you know how the formula works by now, pretty woman is introducedin to a picture, someone has to fall in love with her.I think this film does follow some typical story lines, but thatdoesn't say anything about the content. There are great scenes withCrispen Glover, Dennis Hopper, and Gary Busey, although short. Somethings didn't make sense, such as the need to get in to random fights, but it is entertaining to watch, the fights were actually well done. This is definitely a comedy foremost, but it does have a lot of goodfeel to it. The humor is well balanced, you won't hurt your stomach onthis, but you will keep a smile. There is a little bit of steamy action, so not one for the kids.
Well, the movie isn't exactly "funny."Okay, I admit, there are a few HUMOROUS lines, but definitely nothing thatis laugh-out-loud funny. For example: Right before a steamy sex scenebetween Eleniak and one of her male costars, sh is handcuffed to thebedpostand he cannot remove her shirt. Before leaving the room to retrieve thekey,he tells her, "Okay, don't go anywhere."See, humorous, but not funny. The plot and acting are pretty good. But Erika Eleniak definitely steals the show. She's hot and sexy and thereis a really steamy scene with her that one can't help but rewind andre-watch.There are also some other very sexy scenes with her and she has some veryprovocative lines.Overall, 5 stars. I'd only give it three if not for ErikaEleniak.
Two naval officers (Tom Berenger and William McNamara) are given the taskof driving a sexy waitress (Erika Eleniak) to prison. For some reason shedoesn't want to go and sets out to waylay them.I have seen some thin movies in my time, but this takes the biscuit. Theentire props budget seems to have been blown on two navy outfits, a rustywhite van and one of those waitress dresses that girls with good legs rentfor fancy-dress purposes.Director Dennis Hopper comes on for a moment to do his I'm-a-bit-mad act andMarilu Henner is desperate enough to play a bit part, but they are bothdone-with in minutes: leaving us stuck with the tedious threesome in a vansomewhere in Middle America.Curiously the thing seems to be influenced by the Jack Nicholson film TheLast Detail (navy prisoner being led back to the stock), although that is afilm that is actually worth going out of you way to see.Yes Erica is appealing in a plastic, peroxide and staples-through-the-bellyway, but the other two leads have nothing to offer other than brisknessand/or dim-witted nativity. For those interested in these things, the Baywatch blonde does get herclothes off a couple of times, but most viewers will have fallen asleep bythe time her stand-up-all-by-themselves breasts come out.Insomniacs watching on late night cable might be able might be able to makeit through to the end, but anyone actually shelling out money for thisultra-cheap product will feel a fool afterwards. Trustme.
Not a bad movie at all. I spotted it in the video rental and thought why not. It isn't the best movie in the world, but it isn't the worst one either. Of course seeing Elena naked was a big plus.
This is a good movie. Only thing is, it's not really a comedy like it is said to be. There are a few humorous lines bt whatis there is unoriginal humor and definitely not laugh--out-loud funny. For wxample, in te bedroom scene just before Toni(Eleniak) and Eddy(MacNamera) make love, Eddy is unable to take her shirt off as a result of her being handcuffed to the bed post. Before leaving to retrieve the handcuff key, hey tells her, "Okay, don't go anywhere." See, not original and definitely not laugh-out-loud funny. But, the movie is a good drama and ha a pretty good plot. And having some provocative lines from Eleniak, a scantily clad Eleniak and the one scene with Eleniak naked alone make this movie worth 5 stars. 10 even.
