Charlie St. Cloud is a young man overcome by grief at the death of his younger brother. So much so that he takes a job as caretaker of the cemetery in which his brother is buried. Charlie has a special lasting bond with his brother though, as he can see him. Charlie meets up with his brother (Sam) each night to play catch and talk. Then, a girl comes into Charlies life and he must choose between keeping a promise he made to Sam, or going after the girl he loves.
I don't know why it appears people are indifferent to Charlie St.Cloud; saw it today and it was great! Zac Efron should do drama all thetime. It was the right amount of sensitivity mixed with humor. I lovedall the ocean scenes. The characters were great and I think Charlie'sco-worker was Australian, though they never clarified.Efron should always be in dramatic roles. After "17 Again" thought hemay never work in movies again. However, this totally redeems him as anactor. Leaving the big question of why he is still trying to go intocomedy. The relationship between Charlie and Sam Cloud was heartfelt.~shrug~I would see it again and looking forward to when it is on the HallmarkChannel. :p
This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (DVD) I was very unhappy with my purchase. The seller listed the DVD as "like new". It was a Blockbuster movie rental which is hardly new! They have been viewed many, many times and the case was scratched up without art. I paid $7.48 for the DVD including shipping and was able to buy a brand new DVD at Best Buy for $9.99 with free shipping! It's worth the extra couple bucks to get a much higher quality DVD.
in fact, interesting. for story. for presence of Kim Basinger and RayLiotta. for nice characters. and, first, for Zac Efron metamorphosis.far from High School series, he does a seductive role and the lines ofromanticism are perfect for sustain a character between worlds andduties. it is not a great film but its gifts are not smalls. echo ofexpectations of readers , fans of young Zac, hunters of romance andlife after life, personal experiences or memories from old corners, itis nice piece of reflection, dream and entertainment. and this virtueis fundamental. short, it is the film of Zac Efron. his proof to bemore than the universal teenager. and it is the second fundamentalvirtue of this movie about the things who gives sense to existence.
Zac Efron's acting was questionable, especially during the moments where he was supposed to be upset and sad. His crying looked like he was "acting". He is more suited for light hearted comedies like "17 again".
I watched this movie last night and really enjoyed it. I had it on my hard drive for awhile but since I really like action and adventure, I thought it might be slow and not interesting for me. Not so at all. It was excellent! It starts off with Charlie and his younger brother Sam sailing (nice shots too) and hanging out before he is to go to Stanford on a sailing scholarship. It's obvious that they are very close and enjoy each other's company. But one night, their car gets hit while Charlie is driving and Sam dies. While clinically dead, Charlie makes a promise to Sam in the visions he has that he will meet Sam every day for baseball before sunset. Then the movie skips five years ahead. Devasted and tormented by guilt, Charlie has taken a job as caretaker in the cemetery that Sam is buried in instead of going away to college and moving on with his life so he can keep his promise to Sam. Every day at sunset, Charlie meets Sam, who is caught in limbo between 'here' and the afterlife. It doesn't really explain what Sam does all day long and where he is, but it does make it clear that Sam doesn't want to 'move on' because he will miss Charlie and that he is afraid if Charlie doesn't meet him each day, he will disappear. Then Charlie meets a girl, Tess, who also has a passion for sailing. Charlie struggles with moving on with his life versus keeping his promise to Sam. Then she disappears while boating and Charlie is forced to make a decision. I really enjoyed the film and didn't realize Charlie was Zac Efron (who my son hates). His acting was excellent. The cinematography was great. This is a movie for all ages, nothing profane or sexual in nature in the movie, which is rare to find. But don't expect to see lots of Ray Liotta and Kim Basinger because each appear only briefly, especially Kim. Thumbs up and four stars (I reserve five for my very very favorites).
This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (Amazon Instant Video) My daughter received for Christmas and loved the movie. It ariived nicely packaged and quickly! I will sit and watch soon
Zac Efron stars in the touching tale of a young man who must deal withthe untimely death of his little brother. It is the last few weeks ofhis senior year in high school and Charlie (Efron) has a bright futureahead of him. From a single parent, working class family Charlie is atalented sailor that has a scholarship to an Ivey league university. The night of Charlie's graduation, with the responsibility of watchinghis brother Sam, he attempts to sneak out to attend a friend's farewellparty who will be leaving to join the military. But as he quietly turnson his car there's Sam right in front of the car. After a littleteasing Charlie agrees to drop his brother at a friend's house. As theyare driving tragedy strikes, they are in a car accident that kills hislittle brother. Unable to release the pain and guilt of his brother'sdeath Charlie doesn't accept the scholarship. Years go by and Charlieis stuck. Stuck in the same town in grew up in and stuck in a routineto keep his brother's memory alive.A young woman Tess, a sailor, enters Charlie's life. While sailingduring a storm Tess doesn't return. Charlie has a decision to make doeshe stay for Sam or go save Tess.In his first adult role Zac Efron was believable as the pain strickenbrother. I was interested to see how he would fare in this dramaticrole. I was impressed. One scene that stands out in my mind is when hewas asked to come to the local bar after work. The emotion that heexhibited without words was clear as he attempted to fit in to thehappy crowd around him. Zac's got some acting chops. He carried thismovie well and made it enjoyable. We know Zac is a cutie that can sing and dance. Now we see he can holdhis own in a drama. All we need now is to see if he can be a tough guy;execute some martial arts and handle a weapon then ladies and gentlemanwe may have our next superstar.www.rivareviews.com
I have to admit, that I never gave much thought of the phenomenon thatwas surrounding Zac Efron. The ladies seemed to love him and no onecould have blamed him, if he just kept making the simple romanticmovies, that would please his fan base.He seems to have other things on his mind though. He is trying to act.And I have to admit, that I was surprised at how engaging and howtruthful he seemed in this one. I do think he is better than the HighSchool Musical tag he has stamped on him (which would mean, he is a badactor, which frankly I don't think could be said of him). His character does get a lot of attention from the female characters ondisplay here, which seems natural. On the other hand, you do have thefemale lead in here, that does not seem to get any attentionwhatsoever, which makes you wonder if the male "population" in themovie is blind or into other things. Whatever it is, this is one of thethings that do not feel right. The other being the mixture between theelements on display here. Let me just tell you, that this isn't neitheryour simple romantic movie, nor just pure drama. There is other aspectsto it. I can see though that this might ruin the movie for quite a fewpeople. Especially if they expected something more straight-forward.
This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (Amazon Instant Video) It was something different than what I normally watch. I really liked it a lot. I'm a sucker for a happy ending what can I say?
This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (Amazon Instant Video) A story of losing a loved one is always heartbraking, specially a child. I have seen losing a loved one from a parents perpective, but this first time a see it with a hurting older sibling.Zac Efron did a wonderfull job, I will recomend this movie for ages 13 and up.
This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (DVD) Underated movie about a man and his sunken dreams when his younger brother dies in a car crash. Nuanced understated performance from the usually happy go lucky lead supported with a tight script and cast. Zac Efron is a real revelation as a serious and considered actor, and Augustus Prew is perfectly cast as a "kinda" alter ego to Charlie. Subtle moments of direction and photography from Burr Steers. Cool songs throughout underscore feeling in the viewer from the likes of Electric Owls, Ramones, Andrew Bird and Pink Mountaintops supported by a superb melodic score from Rolfe Kent. A magical, MAGICAL, allegory comparing the sailing setting against Charlie's home setting as a metaphor for life, dreams and the choices we must ultimately make. Bought the US release of the DVD weeks ago - gets even better with more viewings and Bluray on order for its imminent release in the UK next week - my best of 2010! Seriously...buy it!!!
This movie was totally enjoyable. As a sailor myself, the sailing shotswere right on, really brought back memories. I loved the rapportbetween Charlie and Sam, as Charlie was 6 years older than Sam, andtheir father not part of the family for most of Sam's life, Charlie hadto be both brother and father. I thought Zac handled it well. Sam wasadorable which makes Charlie putting his life on hold for five years abit more believable. The one thing about which I am confused islocation. They call the town Quincy, so I think Quincy, Mass. untilTess is sailing and she tells Tink she just passed Whidbey Island onPuget sound and when they go to rescue her, they head for CapeFlattery, which is on the western tip of WA, near the Olympic NationalPark. I loved how Charlie interacted with spirits and we were kept inthe dark, such a captivating idea, I like to think it is possible forany one of us, though it has never happened to me. As no one gets outof this alive, we must say goodbye to those we love, some too soon, andgo on living, just as Charlie finally does. I recommend this film.
This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (Amazon Instant Video) In short this is the underlying theme of the movie, it makes you think about the lines between real and what is real to you. Sweet, sad, funny and very well done with a good message.
This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (DVD) This movie was very good. Zac Efron is definitely going to be a big star. I loved him in this movie. He can do it all.
This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (DVD) i love this movie....totally worth buying it and the sender sent it right away..no problems at all i would tell everybody about it
This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (Amazon Instant Video) I have not read the book that inspired the movie. Even still the movie was extremely good! You do cry in this movie! I cannot express how good of a movie it it...It's definitely inspired me to read the book =D
I like movies that are exactly as they claim to be. "Charlie St. Cloud"is just that, a romantic drama, nothing more and nothing less. There is nothing profound, although with a few thoughtful dynamics,it's just the story of a young man (Zac Efron) unable to overcome thetragic death of his younger brother until he meets a beautiful girl whoshares his same passion for sailing. The problems are plentiful, with cringe-worthy dialogue, supportingactors who haven't yet learned how to act, no affecting drama producingfew tears, and there just isn't enough to completely hold yourattention. But yet, because it's a simple love story that doesn'tpretend to be grandiose and doesn't force out-of-place tears, I liked"Charlie St. Cloud". I found it to be sweet, subdued and modest. It was also the perfect choice for Zac Efron as he matures in hisacting career. Sure, there are probably a few too many shots of Efronstanding in his jeans and t-shirts staring into the sunset with hislonging, blue eyes, but that is, of course, partly why we would watchit in the first place.Follow my blog Napierslogs' Movie Expositions athttp://napierslogs.blogspot.com
this movie is and was an always must buy because of how zac efron is such a good actor and how this movie always left me with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes...
I went to this movie with my girlfriend, not JUSTTTT because she wantedto, but because I was also interested in seeing this sad tale. Thepreviews looked good and I'm not a guy who's afraid to watch some"sappy" love/drama film. I give props to Zac Efron because that dudecan really act (and cry). He has the ability to make the audience feelthe pain and hardships he is going through in his own life and he isvery good at toning down some of the cheesy screenplay with his ownexperience as a well-achieved and believable actor. The kid who playedhis brother Sam was also GREAT for being cast at such a young age. Theyhad a realistic bond and it perfectly personified the true relationshipof any brotherly comradeship. Girls, if your looking for a sad/happyending, zac efrons shirtless body, and a movie that will make your eyestear up then this is the movie for you.
This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (Amazon Instant Video) Good movie. Saw a preview on another movie for this movie and checked it on imdb. found it to download for a great price. Wish it was louder though.
