Not beautifully bad so much as just plain terrible.
I loved this movie. Saw it when it first came out in the theaters and just adored it. Then my neice came up for a couple of weeks and so she wanted to go see a movie. I asked her what see wanted to see, and out of all the movies she picked this one. Even over the Hilary Duff movie and she loved her more than anything I was amazed. I have been waiting impaitanently for this movie to come out. Cant Wait.
Overcooked is the only way I can describe this film. What's wrong with it? Not the plot. The plot is actually prettyinteresting, but unfortunately, the makers of this film chose to takethe most anachronistic, exaggerated, silly and least compelling aspectsof the original catwoman story and to emphasize and even embellishthem. Catwoman is, in one sense, the story of a woman who must die andbe reborn as an embodiment of feline magic and physical prowess inorder to free herself from what appears (in the film) to be imaginarysocial oppression. What can we make of this? Are we being told that thelot of women is so awful that death and potential spiritual andphysical augmentation are the only ways to achieve feminine freedom? Are we being told that cats are good role models for would-be strongand independent women? These themes, though treated a bit more subtlyin the normally more outrageous and fantastic medium of DC comics, areraised to the level of ambiguous, slightly offensive, and reallybizarre social commentary in this film. The Script. The script is the primary problem with the plot. Combinedwith the editing and the director's overall (lack of?) visionconcerning the story The love story could have been an important aspectof the story, but it is poorly developed and only really pays off inthe last scene (possibly the best scene in the film). The flirty butunemotional script couldn't even be saved by the talented Berry andBratt combination.... while I am at it...The Casting. Bratt and Berry, as pretty as they both are, and astalented, have NO CHEMISTRY in this film. As much as I like HaileBerry, this was not a good role for her. First, she's not a veryphysical actress. Second, she was apparently not appropriately inspiredto internalize her character well enough to create consistentcharacterization. In the end, she was more likable before she actuallybecame the Catwoman. Haile - stay away from sci fi, it's simply notyour genre. Bratt is fine in his supporting role - playing a stereotypeTV detective - as are Sharon Stone and Lambert Wilson - the heavies. The Cinematography and Camera-work. Were simply awful. The CGIsequences, which tend to dominate every action sequence, are neitherbelievable nor artistically done. After seeing the CGI in LOTR, itastonishes me that anybody would think they could get away with whatpassed for action animation in thi film. I would have rather seen thefilm cut to a cartoon for the action sequences than to go where itwent. The film also uses a lot short clips and cliché close-ups to grabthe viewer's attention. these techniques have become such a standardapproach that they no longer have any impact. Ho hum. The directing. See all of the above.Catwoman is not nearly as bad as many seem to think (the modal votehere on IMDb is 1). I can honestly say that the film really had goodpotential and occasionally made me think. I even liked some of thecharacters. Hopefully the next time somebody takes on this interestingtale (if that should ever happen again), they will learn from theplentiful mistakes this version supplies.
This review is from: CATWOMAN (2004/DVD/WS 2.40 A/DOLBY SURROUND 5.1/ENG-FR-SP-SUB/OS)NLA (DVD) I'll just confess up front: I liked the movie. I must be in a tiny minority, to judge by all the negative reviews out there. But what bothers me is how repetitious the reviews are; it's like a feeding frenzy where the jaded professional critics pointed out a few flaws and everyone else just jumped on the bandwagon and imitated them.I like Halle Berry; I enjoyed seeing her in her various personas of shy graphic artist, assertive post-transformation woman, and wild Catwoman. She's a versatile actor; OK, maybe not the most talented actor out there but she's entertaining and fun to watch, and enjoyably beautiful.Critics complain that the CGI was cheap looking. Well, I don't own a Sony PSP so can't compare but it seemed more sophisticated than the average video game I have seen. The scenery of the city and the jumping over buildings footage could have been made a bit more realistic. Score one for the critics. The plot--not so great but not a total disaster. It was comicbook stuff. The evil corporate overlords planning, somewhat irrationally, to get women addicted to their toxic beauty cream. If you stop using it, you get really ugly, and if you keep using it you get skin like living marble. Silly. But then, this movie is a fantasy to begin with. Catwoman doesn't have a monopoly on ridiculous plots; you can shoot a lot of holes in the Spiderman movies as well.More seriously is that the movie takes itself too seriously. Had it had more of a sense of humor, like The Mummy, a generally serious movie which is full of hilarious moments, it would probably have earned a bit more respect from the moviegoing public. This is probably the downfall of Catwoman as a moneymaking franchise. Her costume--who cares. This is a comic book movie; of course she's got to wear a sexy outfit. Who's going to see a Catwoman movie where she's wearing running shoes, a baggy warm-up suit and a ski mask, though arguably more sensible? I liked the costume. I'm a healthy male. What more can I say.The dialogue--not a strong point but once again, I enjoyed watching Halle interact with people. I would have liked to see stronger supporting actors and much better written lines. She was good at fighting. I don't know how much was Halle and how much was stunt women but it was convincing. The music--it grew on me. I'm into folk music; this isn't really my cup of tea. But it created a sort of light hearted ambience that helped bring the movie up a little bit.See it; it's not as bad as the critics say.
I've given this movie a rating of 10/10 just for the story.I thought this movie had a good story at least it was different notlike the boring remakes of Batman,Superman,Spiderman,Starwars,Hulk andall that other remake crap.If the greedy producers would just take achance on a new story every now and then we may have some good moviescome out instead of these crappy remakes that I would not be paid tosee. I liked a lot of the scenes, where you got to see heaps of cats, and the mad cat lady with all the cat's that were everywhere and alsothe outfit Halle Berry got to wear, those claws were pretty neat. So ifyou like cats or your sick of remakes then see this movie.
I liked the movie, eventhough most guys I talked with didn't. I think it was cute and my daughter sure loved the punch lines and the leather suit. However, I thought the writers could've put in a lot more work. Her identity was discovered too soon and the rest plot was a little flimsy. I liked the fact that this movie appealed to women, especially after watching both Spiderman and Spiderman 2! There's no comparison because women still can't seem to get enough justice :)...I can't wait to add this one to my personal collection.
This movie was by no means AMAZING, but it was entertaining. I expected it to be terrible from all the negative buzz it got from critics. It really wasn't all that bad. Sure, the graphics could have been better, but I've watched pretty much every single movie that has been out for rent recently and it stands out as one of my favorites.
After reading some horrendous (and I mean really, really bad reviews of'Catwoman', I was definitely considering giving it a miss). I have tosay that after having seen it, I am absolutely at a loss to words as towhy the critics have mauled it so doggedly, and in my opinion unfairly. Were we watching the same film? What was so bad about it? Sure so theplot was on the thin side and the dialogue was highly camp, but otherthan that I can't see what has provoked the spewing of critical vomitall over this film. Halle Berry makes an adorable Patience, anddisplays her vulnerability believably and effectively. On the otherhand, she really sexes up the screen as Catwoman with the wittyone-liners, the hot costume and the raunchy whip cracking. Once againHalle has displayed her versatility. This film is called Catwoman, the name should explain itself. I don'tunderstand why people are ripping it to shreds or calling it laughable,e.g. as in the way Patience acts becoming Catwoman, i.e. the catnipincident (once), the hissing at dogs (once), the tuna (once, which Ifound to be amusing), the prancing around. What exactly did you expecther to do? How else do you act like a cat? How else does a human gainfeline tendencies? Got any better ideas? I didn't think so. Yet wedon't rip Toby Maguire to shreds when he shoots web from his arms (yeahlike THAT makes sense.) There is clearly a double standard approachadopted by some critics, who contradict themselves more then they'dcare to admit. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy Spiderman as well as this. This not brain food and you don't have to evaluate your life after itbut hey, people need that once in a while. It's a fun movie... The CGIwas NOT bad, sure it was obvious at times that it wasn't Halle but forthe most part it was done to a high standard. Let's be honest here andgive credit where credit is due the cinematography is superb. It hassuch a visual allure, a dark, rich atmospheric look, and it is almostsexy to look at. The camera work is very original looking, kudos toPitof, am I the first person to actually praise him? I think so. Thescene where the Egyptian Mau brings Patience back to life is beautifuland picturesque. The music creates an epic mood.Sharon was fun to watch as the 'past it', shallow, bitchy LaurelHedare. Alex Borstein shined as Patience's best friend and BenjaminBratt did the best that he could with what he was given as dialogue.Lambert Wilson plays his part, in the usual camp style, but does it toperfection. All in all the acting is not bad, and unless somebody has apersonal vendetta against Halle Berry, it can't be said that she didn'tput her all into the part. She was sizzling as Catwoman. One critic inparticular said that she looked "as sexy as a hairball in the outfit".Either a jealous woman or a man with terrible taste in women must havewritten that. Halle has undeniable sex appeal in the part. Thesoundtrack is typical summer movie fare with the usual dramatic themesong, mixed with the current popular styles, hip-hop, r'n'b. This isafter all a film that has to appeal to a teenage audience. The actionscenes are exciting and well executed. The ending is suitably over thetop but still entertaining. One scene that I thought was ridiculous wasthe basketball scene and some of the dialogue could have been muchbetter, however the positives weigh out the negatives for me.This is no Citizen Kane or Pulp Fiction but its no Gigli or Swept Awayeither. I have seen way worse comic book movies. Daredevil, Hell Boyand undoubtedly Hulk were worse than Catwoman. It is, on no level oneof the worst films ever made. What were people thinking writing that? Iwent in with the lowest expectations possible for Catwoman and came outof the theatre having seen a supremely entertaining, undeniably aboveaverage film. Critics should be ashamed of themselves and audiencesshould not be puppets. This is worth seeing. There has been a 'Let'sjump on the bandwagon' attitude regarding this film. One person bashesit and suddenly everybody does. I'm glad I went to see this film so Icould make up my own mind regarding it. I usually do agree with criticsbut on this one, I beg to differ. Everybody is entitled to an opinion, you might not like mine, and I might not like yours but there is noneed to be downright nasty and unfair when reviewing something. Thereis such a thing as being balanced. Oh and before people startcomplaining about the absence of Selina Kyle, and Gotham city, whocares, life is too short. So if you want to some light, leave your brain at the doorentertainment, go to see Catwoman. If you want to see a high dramaOscar category film, go to see something else. It's fun, sexyaction-packed, camp, stylish summer fare. It is a step above the usualHollywood fare in the style stakes. Pitof shows a typically stylishFrench attitude. Halle Berry does herself proud. If you want to be agullible puppet, believe the 'we're failed artists', overly critical, intellectually snobby critics. I don't really care if that seems like ageneralisation because it is most likely true. I bet many of themhaven't even seen it. See it for yourself, and make up your own mind. Ilook forward to a sequel ..
I have no idea what everyone wanted out of this movie. It this moviewas for entertainment not for literary composition. It was what Ithought it would be and I found it entertaining. Yes, at points it wasfar fetched but all supper hero movies are. I thought some of the sensecould have been better but I say that about every movie but I have noidea why everyone insists that this movie was so bad in fact I thoughtit was good entertainment. Also, after seeing some of the deleted senseon the DVD I think they would have been better off putting them in themovie to help the story along. For those who go to movies like thislooking for a plot and literary content please go read a book and stopmessing things up for the rest of us.
Catwoman is not necessarily the year's worst movie, but it is 2004's most pathetic.
Catwoman is such a fantastic idea -- like Spiderman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc. And yet, the directing of the this film was so music video-influencedand A.D.D. that it did a disservice to Halle Berry and Ben Bratt. Bratt andBerry's talents remain untapped for what they could have done. Additionally, the reduction of Berry's power to sexual attractiveness is abummer -- and what are girls and boys to take from that? Spiderman is sexy, but not looking like a centerfold. Compared to Michelle Pfeiffer'sCatwoman's walking the line of vulnerability, sexual power, and physicalpower, this presentation of the superhero/antihero feels like a disserviceto the genre & to women and girls in general. The base story pits womanagainst woman over beauty and sexual virility -- what's that about? Is anaging gorgeous model really a sufficient nemesis? And finally, is theoverall "moral" that a strong independent woman cannot have a relationship? These are questions I fear the filmmakers never asked themselves, and, though this movie could have been great, it instead does a disservice bothto the actors and to the audience.
Isn't it strange that a whole back of positive comments for "Catwoman" justpopped up in the past few days? What is even stranger is that 8 of thesepositve "reviewers" have reviewed only one movie: Catwoman. Draw your ownconclusions. As for the movie: Sharon Stone phoned in her performance. Ms Berry dancedand pranced to no avail. Is there any way I can get thoese 90 minutes of mylife back? Quite a few people left, but I stayed to the end. "He chosepoorly". All I can say is: Lame plot, wooden acting, bad special effects. Stay Away!Bad Kitty!
[A] sloppy, dull, brain-dead waste of a movie.
Cartoonish effects and overacting make this more corn than catnip.
this movie is great i loved it it had great action'fun'humor'love story'actors & actress'and it is exciting and sexy please don't lisen to the people who are so negitaive they can't tell from a good movie or a bad movie so are the critics.but lets not talk about the sensles people. i also bought bought my 2 buds a copy couple of day a go the saw and told me they loved it. please see it for your two eye.great movie:)
I really enjoyed this movie. After reading all the negative commentsabout Halle Berry doing such a movie, as if it were beneath her as anactress, I was pleasantly surprised. The graphics and fight scenes wereimpressive, and it's even more impressive to know that Halle did mostof her own stunts. If I'm being honest, and I am....The movie was very enjoyable and Ihonestly liked it better than the "Bourne Supremacy". It's unfortunatethat people want you to act in the movies they think you should (that'sa lot of nerve). I respect that Halle is very versatile and she's avery good actress. I did not like Monster's Ball, although she did anexcellent job, so to see her in such a lighter toned movie waswonderful. The movie was fun, exciting, and simply purrrrrfect!!! Andmost importantly, it looked like she had a great time making it. Sharon Stone was great as well....she makes for an excellent villain!!!
One of the most enduring and popular superheores of the modern age isBatman, and one of the most enduring and popular females in hisuniverse is that of Catwoman. As in the comics, the character of theCatwoman has evolved thanks to the portrayal of numerous actresses, from the sexy cat-burglar on the "Batman" television show, to thetortured soul expertly played by Michelle Pfeiffer in "Batman Returns."Now, "Catwoman" has her own film. Unfortunately, it's about asappealing as a lump in the litter box.Patience Phillips (Halle Berry) is a timid art designer at HedareCosmetics, answering to the imperious George Hedare (Lambert Wilson)and his icy ex-supermodel wife Laurel (Sharon Stone). Hedare is readyto release a new cosmetic line called Beau-line, which promises direand disfiguring effects if the wearer stops using it. When Patiencediscovers this secret, she is killed by Hedare's goons and brought backto life by the spirit of the Catwoman. Now imbued with fantasticagility and cat-like senses, Patience sets out to stop Hedare's plans, all the while dogged by handsome detective Tom Lone (Benjamin Bratt),and having to decide if she is a hero or a criminal.Advance reviews of the movie were dreadful, and for the most part, they're right. The movie is flawed at the most basic level, and thefilmmakers have decided to reject the standard Catwoman character ofSelena Kyle and make an altogether new character with the same name whois in no way related to the Batman universe. Previous screenincarnations of Catwoman relied on basic acrobatics and undeniable sexappeal to have their way. By giving this new Catwoman fantastic powers, the basic nature of the character is altered, making her just anotheraction hero in a silly costume. She is no longer the ultimate femmefatale, the one adversary Batman could never bring himself to finishoff. She's simply a fashion disaster with a whip and high kicks. It's clear that Halle Berry wants to make an impression in her role asCatwoman. She has big stilettos to fill, from the sexy Julie Newmar tothe exotic Eartha Kitt, not to mention the previously-mentionedPfeiffer's electrifying turn. Berry relies heavily on Kitt's mannerismsand Newmar's attitude, but it's obvious that she's just copying themoves. Berry is a decent actress but lacks self-confidence, and whileher heart may be in the right place, everything else in the film isworking against her.The film's director, French music video helmer Pitof, wants to make astylish, sexy film, and he almost succeeds. There are times when thefilm does have a giddily campy feel, much like the "Charlie's Angels"films, but a massive amount of obvious computer-generated workdistracts heavily from the seamless look Pitof strives for. EvenCatwoman's whip is mostly CGI. The script is equal parts camp andaction, but it's never comfortable in either and mostly comes off asludicrous and pieced together by committee: a series of scenes thatwere strung together with little forethought. There are a number ofembarrassing performances as well, not least of which is thenormally-hilarious Alex Borstein, stuck in the role of Frumpy BestFriend. Frances Conroy and Lambert Wilson also seem to be phoning intheir performances, as well. The movie is prevented from being a total disaster by Sharon Stone.Stone's Laurel Hedare is a beautifully manipulative and ambitiouswoman, hateful of the world for the fact that she must age and make wayfor a new spokesmodel for her husband's company. Stone also seems to bethe only one who realizes exactly what kind of film she signed up forand was determined to camp the hell out of it. In a sea of relativelyearnest performances, Stone is a beacon of delightfully viciousmelodrama that makes a painful film at least marginally watchable.Halle Berry deserved a better film. Catwoman deserved a better film.Anyone who's ever picked up a comic book deserved a better film. Fansof Catwoman would be advised to skip this film entirely and hunt downold episodes of the "Batman" TV show or watch "Batman Returns" instead.Meow? Yeah, whatever, kitty. 3 out of 10.
The movie was simple and easy to follow. Its not so suprising that it looks like all the other comic book movies, which are starting to bore me. Yet, with all of this in mind, I thought it was a very captivating pychodelic flick.Be aware of sensual dreams that may come to rub up next to you after watching the movie!
Being Catwoman, Batman's most beatutiful and intreaguing character, I definitle vote 5 stars.
