The Burlesque Lounge has its best days behind it. Tess, a retired dancer and owner of the venue, struggles to keep the aging theater alive, facing all kinds of financial and artistic challenges. With the Lounges troupe members becoming increasingly distracted by personal problems and a threat coming from a wealthy businessmans quest to buy the spot from Tess, the good fortune seems to have abandoned the club altogether. Meanwhile, the life of Ali, a small-town girl from Iowa, is about to change dramatically. Hired by Tess as a waitress at the Lounge, Ali escapes a hollow past and quickly falls in love with the art of burlesque. Backed by newfound friends amongst the theaters crew, she manages to fulfill her dreams of being on stage herself. Things take a dramatic turn though when Alis big voice makes her become the main attraction of the revue.
This review is from: Burlesque (DVD) This movie was as expected, typical storyline in a differnt setting. Liked the music, but a bit boring at times a alright movie..
OK, first of all - I don't get how people compare this to a 30's movieor whatever.I didn't like Christina before much. I just didn't like her outfitalong with the "pop-ish" music she made. Neither I did Cher. But hell, when Christina opened up her mouth on the stage for ToughLover I got thrilled. The sing performances are simply amazing and showthe vocal qualities of both singers. Honestly, I can't stop listeningto the soundtrack. The arrangements of the songs within the movie areamazing as well, incomparable to those in "Step Up" series. But sadly besides that, the screenplay is typically Hollywood - I knewhow the movie was going to end since beginning. Shallow story and Ireally lol'd when Cher was singing her 2nd song in the movie... Justcame along to the empty club, where the most probably loyal sound guywas waiting for her to rehearse something. And she sang something aboutsomething and then she went off. I was like: "wow great singing, but... where does it fit the context?" I give it a 7 just because Ienjoyed the songs and voice along with arrangements.
Aguilera's movable feast of a body and Cher's immobile face will draw an audience to see this film.
I watched this film at the movie theater, and I enjoyed it a lot, even though the plot is not the most original at all. But for the musical numbers alone and the wonderful voices of Cher and Christina, it was worth the ticket price. However, just because of this horrible cover, I won't buy this blu-ray. The poster for the movie was absolutely gorgeous, with its almost completely monochromatic design, so I don't understand why they would choose another artwork for its release. Completely disappointed by this.
This is all about the music and director/writer Steve Antin has fashioned a spectacle worthy of Broadway.
"Burlesque" never approaches the naughty complexity of "Cabaret" or the precision of "Chicago." For director/screenwriter Steve Antin to approach such musical high-stakes without his A-game on is unforgivable.
Small town girl goes to the big city to make it big. Really? Haven't weseen this before? Well of course we have, but we've never been on thisjourney with Cher! Christina Aguilera plays the small town girl, whomakes her way to L.A. to make it big. She lands in the Burlesque clubrun by Tess (Cher) and starts to wait tables while trying desperatelyto let Tess give her a go on stage. Meanwhile she shacks up as friendswith barman Jack and befriends property developer who has his sights onthe club.Of course Tess does give her a job and everyone is astounded at hertalent and the club thrives. Along the way Ali, treads on toes, getsheartbroken and becomes something of a star, while then discover thetrue meaning of Marcus's interests and therefore saving the club andhelping Tess (mother figure!!) and the romance with Jack can blossom.Hurrah! The films story is pretty standard; small town girl, the younghandsome barman who also writes songs (lets hope Ali get to sing one!)the divaesque star of the club who's limelight is stolen and thecharming, but obviously has something else planned man. But despite allthis the film rolls along very merrily and is really quiteentertaining. Set mostly in the club, the director may have watchedfilms like Moulin Rouge, Cabaret, Dreamgirls or Chicago before walkingon set, but there is a great visual style to it with well stagedmusical numbers which are quite catchy, with only the slow balladsbeing a bit cheesy. Perhaps the burlesque element is a little bit of amodern interpretation, with only a feather fan number alluded totraditional burlesque, but that aside the musical numbers make the flowof the film move well.Aguilera is quite good as Ali, though it's not a big step away from hernormal performing persona. Cher of course is Cher and doesn't reallyhave to do anything, she's just great; there are two handsome lead malecharacters and while it seems Stanley Tucci came from the set of TheDevil Wears Prada still in character, he is fun on screen and there isa nice relationship between him and Cher. The film never really goes anywhere and the plot is painfully obvious, but it also never becomes too serious and the issues are light in theirnature with only a brief foray into the a story about drinking. In factthe film is quite good fun, with some nice moments throughout, such aswhen Ali arrives at Sean's apartment only to find a male guest withneither of them remembering each others name. Not as bad as Showgirls, but without as much style or drama of MoulinRouge or Cabaret, this is still an enjoyable romp that's a lot of fun.More of my review at my site iheartfilms.weebly.com
Cher gets to be a den mother, fag hag and performer all in one. Aguilera wears outrageous costumes and is gifted with shoes that look like they ran away from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Gay men everywhere will rejoice.
The rest of Burlesque plays like an extended version of the "Lady Marmalade" video, with a few contrivances to provide vague conflict.
This review is from: Burlesque (DVD) I never saw the movie at the theater so my grandchildren loved it so I bought it and it was amazing. I just love Cher she is so great. Amazon has great service.
This movie totally ripped of the movies Showgirls, Cabaret and Chicago. The only difference was those 3 films were fantastic. I have never been a fan of Christina Aguilera. In my oppinion she over-sings and her voice can be used as an alarm on an alarm clock. I had to plug my ears throughout this movie. There was no character devolpment in any of the characters and the dialogue was amatuer at best. Totally cliched and streotypical. You could actually predict what the next person was going to say. I also didn't like how the "dancers" in this movie resembled nothing but cheap strippers and prostitutes. There was no class or sophistication with any of them onstage. They all reminded me of The Pussycat Dolls, yuck. I love Cher and I really only enjoyed seeing her. Too bad she had to be in this terrible movie. The music was awful as well. I think I would have liked this movie better if Britney Spears played the lead. To some it up, I still remember the part when Xtina Aguielera was was seeing the Burdancers for the first time in the club and tears welled up in her eyes. All I was thinking at that point is what she wanted to say or was thinking and that is "I want to be a hooker just like them.'
"Get your ass up, show me how you burlesque," growls one of this indulgent movie's indulgent musical numbers that swaggers with pearls, glitter and red lipstick - if not grammatical verb usage.
We loved the singing and dancing in the movie as well as the greatperformances. The plot line was a bit predictable but we were carriedalong by the music. We came to appreciate Christina much more afterseeing more than just a single music performance. Her singing was outof this world ,the dance numbers were extremely well choreographed andthe sets kept getting better. We liked Cher as well - still greatpipes. Watched her all the time on the Sonny and Cher show so haveappreciated her voice for many years. We plan to watch this movie againjust to feel good! It's nice to go to a movie that you applaud at theend because you feel like you've been treated to a great performance.
Played a little hooky today and took my 23 year old niece to seeBurlesque. We both enjoyed it - not because the writing was so smart orthe plot so deep - it was just great fun. Predictable and I'm amazed ittook $55mil to make. Be interesting if it breaks even. But I hope thestudios keep making musicals that are both contemporary and a play onthe past. It is fun to see spectacular dancing and amazing vocals. Cheris an entertainment icon we could enjoy forever. Christina needs tosharpen her acting to match her vocal strength. All of today's actorsare being allowed to talk breathy - what is that spineless acting allabout? The movie must have had something good going for it if an Auntand her Niece both really had a terrific time. Thanks!
This is a music video; an ego piece for two fading stars that is one of the most creatively bankrupt pieces of cinema in years. Actually, most music videos are better.
This review is from: Burlesque (DVD) This movie is like a big video; the acting is terrible; The plot worse than campy. It is a trouble sitting through it. The lines were are bad. Aguilera can't act. She cansing but that is not enough to save the movie. It is a horrible script, dialogue, and very cliche storyline. But this movie would appeal to dumbdowned teenyboppers wholove Britney Spears series were worlds are just a pile of crap, like in this drivel.
This review is from: Burlesque (DVD) Great movie! Christina Aguilera was awesome!! I can watch it over and over again. The music and dancing was magnificent.
The movie is an affront to all things screenwriting; a package of empty envelopes at the cliche factory that actually should have every cliche filing a class action lawsuit to stop the film from using their likeness.
A glitzy mess and ensures the audience will have a gay old time with every bead, feather, wig and boa. Camp on steroids - I could watch Cher quiver her lips for two hours and be in cinematic heaven.
As a winningly knowing exercise in ludicrously OTT extravagance, it's hard to fault.
