When she looked through the microscope to view the egg sack and said"oohh millions", I knew it was time for me to leave the theater I feltlike stabbing myself instead him stabbing the doctor. what was AshleyJudd thinking was she that broke. I think we should get a actors fundtogether to prevent good actors from going bad. when it was over i waslooking around to make sure no one saw me leave. i was so horrified notof the movie but the chance that some one might see me watching themovie. I love Ashley Judd but she next time she needs to read thescript. I think show girls was a better movie than bug and that ain'tsaying much.
One of the worst movies of all times. There is nothing more painful than trying to watch this movie at home. The horror is watching this movie. There it is, I figured it out. They figured out how to bring torture into your life by watching this movie at home. Brilliant!!! But still a horrible movie. People giving this movie a good rating must be the producers trying to get their money back...
Exercising the Bug Somewhere in a roadside town in rural America lies atown of about 30 where events occur to save the world from certaindestruction. The events all occur in a rundown motel room number 7, atthe appropriately named the Rustic Motel. The Rustic Motel isreminiscent of the lonely motel in Alfred Hitchcock's classic Psycho. There vacancy sign hanging outside the Rustic Motel is out ofcommission and it would not be a stretch to assume that the lives ofthe inhabitants are similarly broken.Bug only spends the first 20 minutes of its 1 hour and 45 minute runtime anywhere outside the motel room, before it takes its audience on aweird, claustrophobic, and all together uncomfortable emotional journeyinto the lives of 2 individuals who could easily carry their own movieinto their pasts.Agnes White (Ashley Judd) and Peter Evans (Michael Shannon) are twostrangers that are both in need of stability in their lives until theyfind each other. Agnes, a bisexual waitress whose boyfriend has justgotten out of jail, has diluted herself into thinking that she is acompletely stable individual despite her crack addiction, and drinkingproblems. Peter is a war vet who is keyed in on government activity, and really knows what is going on in the world. The two of them arehold up in the motel room for the duration of the movie, while thingsbegin to unravel. To say this movie is weird would be an understatement. Bug makes theaudience members extremely uncomfortable as the situation progresses, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The setting is so closed in thatsitting in the seat makes one feel as if the room is closing in aroundthem. The experiences of the characters become the experiences of theviewer, and by the end you are left wondering where you are and whatjust happened. This foray into the bizarre is expertly done by Exorcistdirector, William Friedkin, and though this movie is not for everyone, for those who enjoy a taste of the weird, and are looking for somethingnew and original from Hollywood this one is for you.
The loser and lonely waitress Agnes (Ashley Judd) lives in a cheapmotel in Okalahoma grieving the disappearance of her beloved son Lloydten years ago. Her abusive ex-husband Jerry Goss (Harry Connick Jr.)has just left prison on probation and is insistently calling her. Whenher colleague and only friend, the lesbian RC (Lynn Collins), bringsher drifter acquaintance Peter Evans (Michael Shannon) to visit her, they have an affair and Peter stays with Agnes in her room. Peter findsbugs in their bed, and discloses to Agnes that he was a soldier in theGulf War submitted to experiments by the army and presently he isinfested with bugs. Agnes feels the same symptoms and the couplebelieves in Peter's conspiracy theory of the American government."Bug" is a weird low-budget movie, set practically in one location, about paranoia and schizophrenia. The unpleasant story is very wellacted, and Ashley Judd surprised me with a great interpretation of alonely woman with a tragedy behind that feels attracted by a gentle manwith delusional paranoia and schizophrenia tendency brilliantlyperformed by Michael Shannon. This movie is not bad, but it isabsolutely predictable; I was disappointed since I expected asurprising twist in the end that never happens. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): "PossuÃdos" ("Possessed")
In this claustrophobic tale set in a low rent motel in nowheresville, Ashley Judd's character meets a whacked-out Gulf War vet. The latter is convinced that the government has implanted insects into his skin. The story unfolds with deepening levels of paranoia within the walls of the seedy motel until a self-immolating climax at the end. I guess the multiple cans of Raid and flypaper strips didn't work. The pacing is glacial. The plot is thin and unconvincing. Other than that, it's a great movie! This stinkeroo needs a can of Glade air freshener to dispel the stench.
When I see a movie, I like it to be a escape from real life. But in thesame sense, I want my movies to be based in real life. Even movies likeBad Boys 2 hold a place in my heart. Why, cause it's based in reallife.......Mostly. But regrettably this a movie that has to create thecircumstance for it to exist and be good.Bug is a story about Agnes (Ashley Judd) who lives in a small motelhiding from her abusive husband, Goss (Harry Connick Jr.) One night hergirlfriend comes over for a little party with a friend Peter (MichealShannon). Peter has no where to go so he stays with Agnes. What followsis a scary decent into madness. When I said this movie works cause is creates the circumstance, I meantit in the sense that had Peter come to us sprouting out about beingpart of a secret Army experiment and the government has released bugsto spy on him, any normal person would laugh him off at best or tellhim to go F himself while calling the people in white jackets to comeget him. So there goes applying this to normal people. In turn, heshacks up with mentally unstable drug user. That is the only way thispremise would work. Now it is a good intense story. It really is a horrifying look into afragile mind's decent into madness. Watching Ashley Judd and MichealShannon twitch and scratch, shiver and shake from the invisible bugscrawling all over their skin, and in most cases under it. It really iseffective at making the viewer squirm. But there are a few things Inoticed that are never really explained. To bad I don't really have thespace here to go into it. I will close with this. It is a good movie ifyou can look past the obvious "this would never happen to me" aspect ofthe story. It will make you squirm, it will make you swat at yourself.I recommend at least renting it or adding it to your netflix.
Many people have said creepy, many have said that it will get under your skin... they are right. It is CREEPY that anyone has enough money to waste on a fill such as this and it will get under you skin that you actually sat through the whole thing. Do yourself a favor; unless you are itching to see Ashley Judd naked skip it.
A man in London killed his child after watching this movie. He was ahigh flying executive with a wife and 2 year old daughter. Afterwatching this movie he thought that either he or his daughter hadbecome possessed. He went to trial and was acquitted of murder due toinsanity. Probably there were other factors involved but this movie wascited as to the start of his breakdown. Here is a quote from anewspaper, "A millionaire City executive and "totally devoted father"killed his two-year-old daughter by smashing her head against the floorbecause he believed she had been taken over by a "malign and satanicentity". Not the first of Friedkins films to be cited as having amalignant power.
Bug is actually a clever film idea. Stoners actually think that theyare being eaten by bugs. Well, that's why you shouldn't smoke youfreakin retards. Bug is a really stupid and pointless film that justtanks completely. It is so stupid, and I am not convinced by a fewthings. Ashley Judd as a stoner is absolutely ridiculous, come on weall know it. Ashley Judd couldn't even play a hooker let alone astoner. It's like Gary Oldman playing a pimp. Bug is from directorWilliam Freidkin, who did the fantastic The Exorcist. The Exorcist is aton better than this film. This film is just a ridiculous mess that Ihate. It isn't the wort film I have seen, but it's one of them. Thefilm would be a solid 1, but the film is just really stupid. Mysister's smoke and they have never actually seen any bugs. I am notbuying Bug in either way. I wouldn't buy it in stores and I don'tbelieve it. Back to what I was saying, I would give this film a 1, butI think that the film is original. I give Bug a thumbs down because itis just weird, and incredibly pointless. I hate it, and I hope you willtoo, because it is really a bomb.Bug:1/2 out of ****
When it comes to these three ingredients I'm already ready for theride. Its like an alien crash, you cant help but look but this moviedoes everything but crash.A lonely woman named Alice makes her waythrough life livin on her tips while livin in real ugly motel room tillshe meets Peter at the watering hole she works at ,shes got some messedup bones in her closet and hes off his meds..I know a match made inmovie heaven .From start to finish it feels like a play.(because itwas) It rises to a crazy climax and has an explosive ending.Judd provesshe can act and the actor playing Peter has since been nominated for anOscar. If your single or just feel desperate I highly recommend thiscreepy dramatic thriller.
(WARNING: Major spoilers abound in this review.) If you want to be inon bad-cinema history, drop whatever you are doing and go see "Bug." Itis the greatest movie Ed Wood never made. And after "Eye of the Beholder" and "Ya-Ya Sisterhood," "Bug"conclusively proves that Ashley Judd seeks out these humiliations in amovie script: gratuitous nudity; heavy emission of bodily liquids fromthe eyes and nose; and dialogue that turns her character into a totalditz. Our first clue that this movie is off the beam is that it's set inOklahoma, yet the phone that we see in constant close-up displays a 904area code. This is an ominous sight to a Florida moviegoer, but I letit pass at first.Anyway, Judd plays a lonely bar waitress named Agnes. One night, afriend introduces Agnes to a drifter named Peter (Michael Shannon). Atfirst, Peter strikes Agnes as monosyllabic, but soon the twotentatively open up to each other.Later, Agnes' nasty ex-husband Jerry (Harry Connick Jr.) shows up andgives the movie some palpable tension -- fooling you into thinking thatthis might be a rational movie. But soon, Peter tells Agnes he hasn't made love to a woman in a longwhile, and Agnes commands, "Come 'ere, boy," like a road-companyBlanche DuBois. Later that night, Peter gets a bug bite and has a longconversation with Agnes about bedbugs -- because the surest way toscore points with a naked Ashley Judd is to discuss insects. At one point, Peter deserts Agnes, and we're thinking, "Good for her."Then he returns to tell Agnes how the government has been running bugexperiments on him, and Agnes gets the worst case of Stockholm Syndromeever. Before long, Peter is using a junior-high microscope (where'd a drifterget that?) to examine stuff that isn't even there, and Agnes is soafraid of losing this wack-job that she starts seeing the stuff too. From there, the movie derails to a completely bonkers climax, withShannon making like Christopher Walken, Connick doing Jack Nicholson, and Judd doing...well, bad Ashley Judd. And every bit of it is fascinating. Because who cares about Peter --when did Ashley Judd start to unravel so dramatically? By movie's end,you half-expect an usher to come around and solicit contributions forAshley Judd's fading movie career.
if you like films such as OPEN WATER and HARD CANDY and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN as well as smart hardcore horror films , this is probably for you . i'm certain actors relish roles like these . if the above sort of picture is not your cup of tea , you're probably going to dislike this film quite a bit i'd think . some people like much of their film veiwing to really challenge and shock them . count me in .
This film is definitely not for everyone. 'Bug' is a very minimalistbut deeply disturbing psychological horror movie that starts slowly butthen gradually builds into a blisteringly ugly depiction of sharedinsanity. Ashley Judd is excellent as Agnes, a fragile cocktailwaitress who lives in terror of her abusive ex-husband (Harry ConnickJr.)and is grief-stricken over the mysterious loss of her son. Shebecomes involved with Peter- a troubled Desert Storm veteran whobelieves that their motel room is infested with bugs. Agnes, deeplylonely and desperate for a meaningful relationship, buys into Peter'sever-escalating paranoia and the two of them inexorably drift into atruly horrendous delusional universe.William Friedkin directed 'The Exorcist', one of the very best horrorfilms ever made. Once again, he is in top form for 'Bug' though this isnot so much a traditional horror flick as a vivid character study thatis not afraid to challenge it's audience. Practically the entire plotunfolds in Agnes' ratty motel room, which creates a dense atmosphere ofisolation and confinement that mirrors the disintegrating mentallandscape inhabited by our unfortunate protagonists. Though there aresome gruesome scenes, primarily the horror here is cerebral in nature. The brief scenes of violence are shocking but it is the moments ofalmost unbearable tension that linger in the mind. In short, this isone of a small number of films (Roman Polanski's 'Repulsion' comes tomind) that immerse the audience in the inner workings of madness ratherthan simply portraying it's more lurid outer manifestations.
Steppenwolf ensemble member Tracy Letts adapted his play into this fearsome horror movie, directed with single-minded claustrophobia by William Friedkin (The Exorcist).
This review is from: Bug (Special Edition) (DVD) Those expecting a traditional horror film out of Bug may be dissapointed... what we actually get here is a "slow-burn" type film that plays like a psych study on the irrational and depraved behavior that lonliness can create (almost feels like a film student with a minor in psychology decided to make an informative video that got a little out of hand). Bug was originally a play, which is completely obvious in it's delivery. Long scenes of 2 people interacting (with an occasional 3rd thrown-in) and all taking place in the confines of a single set (a run-down motel room is honestly where 99% of the movie takes place). Luckily for director William Friedkin and the viewer, the actors all give their best effort with the kind of gusto needed for the delirium put forth on screen (never seen Ashley Judd look so rough... or full-frontally nude!). Ultimately the movie provides enough in the set-up, Friedkin's always great direction, and the aforementioned acting to make this a worthwhile viewing... at leat once, though I'm not sure that anyone will love it enough to want to see it again anytime soon (kinda tedious for several viewings). A few scenes of gore (not much though) and a couple "twists" (nothing you don't see coming) help push the finale into a maddneing crescendo that, like most of the movie, delivers but doesn't leave much of an impression. William Friedkin has attempted the horror genre a couple of times with mixed results (personally I LOVE The Guardian though!) and this fits in with those films pretty well... unfortuantely I think it's safe to say that he doesn't have another Exorcist in him (but I hope I'm wrong).
**SPOILER WARNING**I Read the plot and I thought this soundsinteresting not to mention someone giving it a 9 out of 10 rating.Starts off strange there in the middle of nowhere in a run down motelwhile she receives calls with no one on the other line. Alshey Juddworks at a Lesbian bar the next day she talks to her lesbian friendthere and thats the only part that doesn't take place at the motel. Soher lesbian friend brings a guy she just met over who is odd from theget go. He ends up staying the night and forms a relationship withAshey Judds character then he starts finding bugs but you never seethem so your lead to believe there just really small and you can't seethem. Then he tells her a story about the army using him as a Guineapig for experiments. So she starts to believe the bugs are borrowinginto her as well and they start cutting them self's to get them out andother weird stuff begins bug zappers and sticky paper all over theroom. Well long story short he was really in a psych ward and was justdelusional thinking bugs were in him and Ashley Judd's character beinga lonely coke head so desperate to be with someone believes it and theyend up burning them self's to death in the room the end biggest wasteof time ever do not see this movie.
Beat by beat, Bug is gripping: It has that feverish compression of great theater, but director William Friedkin gets inside it, so it's never stagy.
Bug buzzes around in random menace for an hour until its third act, when -- zzzzzt! -- it flies straight into the zapper.
William Friedkin ratchets up suspense and terror to an almost unbearable level with his adaptation of Tracy Letts' award-winning 2004 Off-Broadway play "Bug"
No name actors, no name director, no name screenwriter, utterly inaneplot, low-budget, senseless dialogue and an overall pointless film. What's to like about this film?? Michael Shannon (8 Mile) plays PeterEvans, a man with schizophrenia who believes there is bugs everywherein his motel room. Sounds interesting enough? Sure. Well, from thereit's all downhill.A number of irrelevant scenes, pointless sex scene with overwhelming, unnecessary nudity, and a unrelenting slow pace of boring uselessdialogue that propels the movie into a big waste of time. It's barelyninety minutes and yet it feels like you're sitting and watching a twohundred minute film. It's insane and outrageous how stupid this movie is. I've seen Meet theSpartans, Blair Witch Project, and a number of very dumb films, butthis is the dumbest thing ever. The dialogue doesn't make any sense andthe plot has no substance beyond the initial idea. As the movieprogresses, the scenes drag on longer and longer. As Peter gets worsewith the bugs, you feel like you're losing brain cells by the minute. In one scene, the female lead (lead is a bit overstating since themovie revolves around two characters) rambles on, non-stop, forapproximately five minutes. No cuts or shot changes are made during herlong, long speech of trying to figure out where the bugs came from.I'm utterly disappointed that I couldn't give this movie a zero ratingbecause if there is one film that deserves it, it's this one. Evenwhile drunk or high, you will not like this film. I can't imagineanyone giving this a rating higher than one out of ten.Never ever watch Bug as it is the WORST FILM EVER!
