Bridget Jones's Diary

Can a single woman over 30, who smokes too much, drinks too much, and has a tendency to say whatever comes into her mind, find her place in the world... and a man? Bridget Jones is an assistant at a London book publisher, feeling time pass her by. When Daniel Cleaver, her boss, starts flirting with her in a vulgar way, she plunges straight in. An affair ensues and shes head over heels. She also keeps running into Mark Darcy, a reserved even stiff barrister who has known her since she was a child young enough to frolic naked in his wading pool, seems to look down his nose at her, and hates Cleaver (truth is, Daniel may be a bit of a bounder). What are Bridgets choices?

Absolutely Hilarious

Absolutely one of the best romantic comedies I've seen in a long time! Reneedid a great job in her role. She played her so perfectly and even gained 25extra pounds. I liked Bridget's alcoholic, single, workaholic craziness andhow we basically got to go inside her head and really discover what she wasthinking. Other movies such as "City of Angels" and "What Women Want" havetried to go inside women's thoughts and have not really suceded. "BridgetJones Diary" will become a classic like Pretty Woman. I can predict italready

surprising language

When I watch a romantic comedy, I'm not expecting to be bombarded with the use of the f-word, but that was the case with this movie. I had a hard time focusing on the plot because I was wondering the whole time if we're supposed to believe that Brits use the f-word in every other sentence. I remember back when Al Pacino's Scarface was criticized for its language. It didn't bother me in that movie because you expect gangsters to use it. But it seemed out of kilter here and spoiled what otherwise would have been a more enjoyable movie experience. I mean, what would Sleepless in Seattle have been like if Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan were saying (...) all the time?

Bridget Jones's Diary

I really loved this movie for it's simplicity and honesty and showing me that chilvary is not dead.

The script ... loses sight of the book's breezy wit and stacks up implausibilities as high as Bridget's half-eaten boxes of Cadbury's Milk Tray.

OVERRATED & UNFUNNY

I watched this COMEDY without laughing once. And most of the people in thecinema weren't exactly off their seats. Either they were laughinginternallyor just didn't find it funny. The latter is more than likely.I thought Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant were good but the script waspredictable and boring. The jokes were forced.Co-writer Richard Curtis is good when partnered with Ben Elton, who is asolid joke writer but (with the exception of FOUR WEDDINGS) he has failedtoimpress me.Interestingly enough, Ben Elton's big screen mission, MAYBE BABY wasprettyaverage.I suggest the two embark on a big screen project together. Then and onlythen are we likely to see a theatrical British release with jokes asstrongas the ones seen in their classic sit-com BLACKADDER.

Chocolate Fudge Sauce from the Jar

Delectable movie up to a point, but then it cloys, just like one ofBridget's snacks of chocolate fudge sauce from the jar. Two gorgeous men vie for the love of our hapless heroine -- how's that for afemale fantasy flick? They even duke it out for her -- how's that fortrite? The Darcy relationship relies on a sequence of annoying-to-watchmisunderstandings so protracted one wants to fling one's buttered popcorn atthe screen. On the plus side, a sexy plump heroine on the screen is long overdue. Withher spilling brassieres and full thighs, Renee looks luscious. Her ditsysincerity is charming, though one wishes she didn't have to be so stupidsometimes; at one point, she demonstrates a total ignorance of some big-dealfront-page trial in which her would-be boyfriend is a key player! Also on the plus side, a nice subplot involving her mother and father. Theseniors get their moment.A romp of a movie, enjoyable but ultimately witless and about 15 minutes toolong for its own good.

the film through the Kring Filter

the film through my Filterdid the diary of bridget jones hit or miss the mark?i was disappointed with the lack of seriousness/intensity of the film.therewere some beautiful moments of humor/grace and wit...but i found most ofthescenes to be predictable and strung together in a contrived way which mademe feel 'set up' to respond in the way the director hoped for...!renee is a luminous actor- her unique energy shines through every role ihave seen her in...but this character seemed a bit hollow and empty...ifeltlike getting the english accent down and gaining weight was the main focus!the journal writing of bridget should have been more of a key element inthefilm. the pacing and rhythm of the movie began with a nice flow and thenbecame very choppy and slapstick comedy cliche. the climax scenes thatcouldhave touched me failed to do so. the dialogue never felt real to me. was itthe screenplay that missed the mark? i found myself not really feelingconnected to any of the characters. i wanted to care and to feel like i wasright there in the setting. this never happpened...it was clear 'i waswatching a movie'. i never lost myself in the story. great films transportyou into their world. this one missed that mark. it had the potential to bea transcendant and wildly funny movie. such rich and interesting subjectmatter- why waste it with punch lines and two men fist fighting overbridgetand food splattered on aprons in the kitchen? -falling off exercise bikesand cutting from one actor to another with a predictable 'look' on theirface- it was condescending! such cliche!!! i will say that the lighting andsets were beautiful and the cast of actors filled their roles with a solidquality...i cannot seem to pinpoint what made the film feel so hollow? theediting or script perhaps? ...i got the feeling they were trying so hard tomake it funny and lost sight of any seriousness to the life and feelings ofbridget jones. the story got lost in the humor and the props in each scene.it is a 'self conscious' film. they wasted an opportunity to develop hercharacter and delve into her mind. what makes bridget tick? why does shewrite? single and 32. that is juicy material. she seems to be a veryauthentic honest person and that was not fully expressed or honored yet ifelt like they were hinting at that and missing the bullseye of it. now iwant to read the book and see how that differs from the film!-shannon.

Sweet, Witty and British

Bridget Jones. I love her. I really do. That's why I think everyone lovesthis film, because so many women can say: "That's me!". The jokes aremainlyat Bridget's expense, and there are times when you cringe for her.Overall, its a sweet feel good film about falling in love. Its witty, charming andvery adorable.

A must-see for all women!

I absolutely adored this movie! I laughed all the way through andrelated to everything that happened. I am just now reading thebook, so I recommend that those who have already read it go tothe movie and not compare it to the book...try to think of it asanother installment of sorts (or another view?) or Bridget's life. Ithink that ALL women should go see this movie! Learn to loveyourself just as you are!

A teen's point of view

Before seeing the movie, I read Helen Fielding's book, which was, I think, one of the best books I've ever read, so I had high expectations for themovie. I was disappointed by how much of the book was not in the movie, butall of the best parts were. I was disappointed by the fact that most of theplot with Mrs. Jones and Julian was cut out and that Jim Broadbent was notgiven much screen time. I was especially impressed by Zellweger's andGrant's performances and had no idea until after I saw the movie thatZellweger wasn't British. Bridget Jone's was a very sincere character that Icould relate to easily, and I thought the movie was funny despite what somepeople say. I was particularily glad that the Tarts and Vicars scene fromthe book was in the movie--that was, in my opinion, the best part. All inall, I loved this movie. I'd give it four stars.

BJD is the best!

Bridget Jones Diary is a must see for all. Its really really funny, andthefact that it stars Hugh Grant and Colin Firth makes it even better. Thisisone of my favourite films of all time, and i can't wait to see The EdgeofReason.

Entertaining - Good Belly Laughs

Ignoring the obvious stale "plot" development, this film should be enjoyedfor what it is, a very funny British film (with an American lead!) in thestyle of Four Weddings. Lots of good belly laughs to be had here and wellworth seeing (with or without previous alcohol unit consumption).

For the ladies and the men who love them...just the way they are.

"Bridget Jones's Diary" tells of a single thirtyish Englishoffice worker (Zellweger) who is plumpish, klutzy, andunsure of herself but dauntlessly playing the mating gameinspite of her imperfections. A sort of "Rocky" for singlewomen, "Bridget..." gets off to a quick start and keepstheentertainment coming nonstop all the way to its delightful conclusion.Charming and laced with wry British wit, this film out of the UK is a laugh/cry feel good flickforladies and the men who love them...just the way they are.

Not Just a Chick Flick

"Bridget Jones's Diary" is much more than a chick flick. This movie has all the makings of the funniest of funnies- it combines comic situations with mature (and not-so-mature) humor, but also takes a more serious tone. What makes this movie much more than it seems is that it is a modern day Pride and Prejudice. The central characters all line up to Austen's- the plot is very similar, if not exact. Helen Fielding cleverly makes this movie about womens' issues enjoyable even for men. See this movie with a date, or by yourself for a good, hardy laugh.

Achieves the rare feat of being both old-fashioned and post-modern and still finding a way toward a happy ending.

Mr. Colin Firth was outstanding as Mark Darcy.

Colin Firth's portrayal of Mark Darcy made this a most memorable film forme! It is a joy to watch the low-key acting of Colin Firth, not to mentionwhat this actor can do with his voice, eyes, gestures, and gracefulmovements during this film. He makes it look so easy!

davidguy 2012-04-22 20:04:39

So exquisite!

Even if this is not the masterpiece of the year, it is still very very goodentertainment! If you know BBC's Pride and Prejudice, well, this is just themodern version... Same twists and turns... And same very good lead thanks toRenee Zellweger. She is so amazing, so natural as a typical 30 somethingBrit. Same Mr D'Arcy - Colin Firth should put a copyright on the role as heso embodies D'Arcy. I have to admit that Hugh Grant excelling as thewomaniser somehow steals Firth's thunder... Perfect date film of course:chick falling in love for the not-so-gorgeous but attractive man, funny, good music...If I may, 9/10.

A winning adaptation of a wonderful book

Like many others, I was unhappy when I heard that Texan Renee Zellweger was cast as Bridget Jones. How was a svelte American supposed to play the beloved, blubbery, British Bridget? But Zellweger carries off the role beautifully. She's not afraid to seem as awkward, as perpetually embarrassed and as chubby as the book Bridget. To those unfamiliar with the plot, here's a summary: Bridget is a thirtysomething Brit who struggles with her weight and her dead-end job -- as well as her lust for office scoundrel Daniel (Hugh Grant). Her overbearing mother keeps trying to set her up with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth from the BBC "Pride and Prejudice"), whom Bridget despises. The plot bears a vague resemblance to "Pride and Prejudice" overall -- making Firth's casting rather clever, especially given Bridget's obsession with him in the second book, "Edge of Reason."As in "Pride and Prejudice," our heroine discovers that the handsome, charming man is not quite what he seems -- and neither is the proud, arrogant one.The dialogue here is clever and the acting is superb. This is one of those rare chick flicks that overcomes its genre on the strength of its humor: My boyfriend was playing a football game on his computer while this was on, and he had a hard time pretending he wasn't watching!

Compromises don't come much finer than this

I sat down to watch this film certain that it would be a horrid compromiseof British humour and US influenced shmaltz. The casting of Renne Zellwegerover the likes of Minnie Driver aggravated me. There's just no *need* forit. And the news that Renee had the same voice coach as Gwyneth Paltrowfilled me with horror. Paltrow's English accent is very credible StandardEnglish. The only trouble is, nobody except newsreaders speaks StandardEnglish. Everyone - *everyone* - in the UK speaks a recognisabledialect. And initially, Renee struck me as similar. Her accent is Standard English, except where it verges into generic over-rounded "posh". It's not adialect, and it rings just a little false. Oh well, I thought, here we go. At least it's not Dick Van Dyke. But to my delight, five minutes into the film, I'd (nearly) gotten over it. Because Renee *is* Bridget Jones. She looks perfect, and her mannerisms areflawless. I was won over, and quite in love, and considering that Bridgetis actually not a sympathetic character, that's quite afeat. And from there it was plain sailing, because the rest of the cast acted asthough the roles were written for them. Colin Firth's role *was* writtenfor him (in the original columns and book) in fact, and Hugh Grant's mightas well have been. The support were equally as comfortable andrecognisable, with only a couple of exceptions: Cosmo, who should have beenmore Tim Nice-But-Dim (British reference, but it's a British film) andJulian, who, to be fair was playing one of the few characters that had beenchanged significantly from the book.Highlights were the scenes that were recognisable re-workings of the 1995BBC miniseries of "Pride and Prejudice", lowlights were the slightly kludgedending that actually veers away from the Diary (and Austin) original, andthe couple of Americanised scenes. All in all, a splendid adaptation and a splendid film in its own right. Thebig outstanding question is: if they film the sequel, which features aninterview with Colin Firth, who will they cast to play him? Enquiring mindswant to know. ;-)

Not a patch on the book

I can't believe most of the comments here, which generally seem to suggestthat this film is a decent attempt at filming a brilliant book. It is atravesty. It is a typical Richard Curtis affair, filming by numbers (allthat was missing was the disabled character). All his films are like overlysweet chocolate - delicious at the first bite, then afterwards you feelreally nauseaous. So what is wrong with it? Bridget the book is greatsatire. Here, the satire loses all bite. Bridget the girl is not a sad, lonely muppet. The whole point of the book is that she has a fab life, andstill feels inadequate (see an interview with Fielding in a copy of 20 ansmagazine if you don't believe me). Bridget is supported by wonderfulfriends, who are entirely neglected in this film, with not one 'emergencysummit' at cafe rouge convened. They also did all those stupid , pointless, irritating things films of books always do: Mark Darcy's Mum's name ischanged from Elaine to Geraldine. Why? Daniel's other woman's name ischanged from Sukie to Lara. Why? Magda goes from being a supportive friendeven tho she has defected to the world of smug marrieds to another of theirnumber. Why? Because Richard Curtis is so in love with his own writing hedoesn't know when to leave well alone? I really went with an open mind tothis film - and usually I adore Renee Zellweger. Here, all I got was a loadof tosh. yes, Colin Firth mumbled quite admirably and looked embarrassed atthe right moments. Hugh Grant has at last got rid of his floppy fringe andposh bloke stutter. But what a shambles (and it's cinematically bad too, with embarrassingly obvious slow mos whenever Maguire wants you to feelsad). Save your money and buy another bottle of Chardonnay instead. It'swhat the 'real' Bridget would have wanted.
