Purchased this movie as a Gift

This review is from: Blood In, Blood Out (DVD) A friend of mine has a housekeeper who was watching this movie on TV on her day off from her regular job. The housekeeper did not show up at my friend's abode at the appointed time because she was engrossed with the movie. My friend called the housekeeper to find out what the problem was. The housekeeper quit watching the movie to come over and do her duties. They ended up having a big spat about it. My friend wanted to make-up and restore a peaceful relationship. So she asked me to order the movie for her housekeeper. I have not seen the movie, but I keep wondering what the fuss was all about. Maybe the housekeeper will read this and then lend me the movie so that I can watch it. I keep thinking, "What am I missing?" Maybe you can tell me.

Wish I could learn Spanish from these guys

With a title like - "Blood in, blood out"* I thought this movie wasgoing to be a joke - it was anything but. I can't say enough about howgood this movie is. To all who have not seen it - rent and watch ittoday! * "Blood in, blood out" - I would later learn the significanceof it, as you'll too, if you decide to watch it. The one-liners aresuch a treat. With many of them containing surprising truths. Lastly, was it just me, or did anyone else start talking like the charactersten minutes into the watching the film! There's such a roll to the waythe words sound. You just know what they mean even if you can't speak aword of Spanish. I wish I could learn Spanish from these guys - then noone would mess around with me!

Three Latino gang members follow divergent but related paths: criminal, cop and artist

This movie is average. It's a 5 or a 6. It has a number of problems anda number of good points. The good points are that it's an ambitiousfilm that makes a serious attempt to show the changing lives of threedifferent men from the barrio from the time they are about 18 to whenthey are 30. They are bound together by blood, by background, and bygang. But their actions eventually lead to one being in jail, anotherbeing a cop and a third being an artist. This is not Manhattan Melodrama, however. There is far more realism. Most of the focus is on the prison life of Miklo (Damian Chapa). In theprison are three gangs, divided by race: brown, black, and white. Theirrivalries for power play a critical part in the film, and it's almostas much about these gangs as anything else. This is a strong point ofthe script. The character arcs of the three leads create another strongpoint. The main problem with the movie, in my opinion, is the direction ofTaylor Hackford. There are simply too many scenes in which the actorsare shouting at each other at the top of their lungs. The directorshould also have had a hand in cutting down the excessively wordy linesthat clutter up many scenes. A movie is not a book. There are somegroup scenes that are not well staged or managed at all and in whichthe result is awkward. The script has too much verbal exposition andexplanation. It has clichés and lacks progressive tension, but gooddirection and acting might have overcome these issues. Unfortunately,it seems to me that the acting abilities and charisma of the actorsvaried widely. They just didn't all pull off their roles. Some did, andothers didn't.I was straining to watch this one to the end. I didn't find itparticularly engaging and that's due to how it was written andexecuted, not the story or characters.UPDATE: After writing the above, I went back and read my review ofAgainst All Odds by the same director, written more than 2 months ago.Interestingly, some of my criticisms of that movie are similar to thosemade here.

International brotherhood of vato locos?

Although I didn't watch this movie straight on through it didimpress. There was tension throughout because every verbal confrontationcould or did lead to a sticking. At times I thought this movie was onthe Spanish channel and felt it might be a problem for a lot of theaudience. The Spanish was mainly Pachuco which goes back to at least the1940's and usually is only spoken by Pachuco's.That being the situationit was surprising to read so many positive comments from persons in theU.K.,Toronto,Israel and many other places. It seems as though modern dayaudiences are more broadminded and should be complimented for it.Growing up in Oakland in the 1950's and 60's there wern't too many vatolocos around just a lot of people that wanted to kick butt, now it'sworse.Being far away from east l.a. and a little bit closer to Q I'llstill take the liberty to call the main characters veterano's.What theyhave been doing they have been doing for many years. The one scene thatI did not like was when the kid was in the storage room with the aryanboss, the thumb scene.Going along with the flow of the movie I foundmyself yelling out "Nel Ese". Otherwise this was a very interestingmovie.Hay te wacho(see you later)

Blood In Blood Out - Criminally under-rated!

I first saw this film a few years ago when my brother stumbled acrossit in a bargain basement basket bin! What a travesty for a start thatit had not made a bigger mark at the box office and had been consignedto a cheap basket! I'm sure if released with more fanfare this time itwould reach the audience it deserves! It is a story of rival gangs, family, love, betrayal, loyalty, acceptance - every film cliché youcould think of.It thoroughly explores the destiny of its 3 young stars as theystruggle to make their way with the life path they have taken. I won'tgive away the plot as I believe anyway who truly loves films should seethis film in its full glory with no knowledge of the plot or how thefilm eventually plays out.I have been reading the postings, and many negative comments have beenmade about this film, but I believe this film stands up to much of itsunfair criticism.I will admit though, that I did squirm at some of Miklo's earlierexpressions in the film, but a 3/4 of the way through he really picksup the baton and completely takes over. In fact, he is a revelation. There are some cheesy bits of dialogue, but I don't think this takesaway from the piece in any way.It is a long film, but it needed to be. I don't think there are ANYscenes they could have done without - it is very effective, just theway it is.Anybody who has seen it and didn't like it first time round, I employyou to rent it/buy it again and give it another try.I purchased another copy of it again just a few days ago. I watched ityesterday and was still moved - as if it was the first time I saw it.Its definitely TOP TEN best film material! MUST SEE!

The most under-rated film of the 90s

Taylor Hackford's movie about the Chicano culture,is a tale about love, friendship, honour and brotherhood. It's a lot better then most of the films that have won the Oscar for best picture in the last ten years, and I believe is one of the best films of all time.

Sangre

A friend of mine told me that this movie was really good, so I went and rented it. It was actually really good. The only fault that it has is that it's a little long (over 3 hours!) and it's a bit drawn out. Oh well. Damian Chapa is really good as Miklo in this movie. Benjamin Bratt is really cute, especially at the beginning of the movie when he's all vato. The guy who plays Cruz looks a little bit like Snoop Dogg when he has long hair, but he's really great, especially in the middle of the movie. So, go rent this movie. It's a little bit on the gory side, but it's still a great movie.

excellent story line and plot....

Definitely one of my favorite films ever. Also a very underrated film.I was turned on to this movie by a Latino roommate I once had whoexperienced and or witnessed some of the events similar to those thattake place in this film. Outstanding depiction of gang life both in andout of prison. An excellent representation of the distance people willgo in order to stick together and survive. Interesting how the 3 boysstart their lives together. They all go their own ways then are thrownback together by circumstance. A great look into Spanish culture. Notthe best acting that I have seen in a film. However the story is basedon the real lives of former gang members and criminals. Many of theactors in the film come from violent and crime filled backgrounds. Anoutstanding film overall!

Outstanding

This review is from: Blood In, Blood Out (DVD) Jimmy Santiago Baca wrote the screenplay-----some of the information came from his award winning book A PLACE TO STAND. This film actually had scenes filmed in San Quentin with only a few actors and many inmates. The realism displayed by award winning director Taylor Hackford is sobering. Benjamin Bratt seen early in his career does an outstanding job. This film follows 3 brothers who make different choices with different results that impact their lives forever.

Cinderellaaaaa why don't you get a fellaaaaahh!!

I have seen this movie way too many times, its a true cult classic. 3hours of brilliant (and sometimes corny) mobstermania.Miklo is a great character, and the surrounding cast is equally great. The 90's vibe oozes out of every frame, and there are so many memorablescenes, its hard to name the best.Although its fair to say the prisonparts are very amusing and might belong to the movie's best moments.its not the best movie ever made by far, but for fans of the genre itsa very memorable and highly amusing movie i have watched countlesstimes and enjoyed every time. Great characters, great atmosphere, hilarious scenes and a 3 hour journey through a pretty well writtenstory.Cult classic, gotta watch it every 5 years.

Ties From Within

It's always interesting to see a picture based on the ties between family or close relatives. The most curious part is to see how each person deals with and in the family they're born into. Since we cannot choose our family or the position we were born into, some give in to the circumstances around them while others use them to their advantage. What I mean is if the circumstances are not as they should be or undesirable life is much difficult. Some ties can never be broken! One of the most important factors that shape our life is the family we're born into.

Excellent

This film is a really masterpiece of Mr. Taylor Hackford! This movie isa reality theme of the prisons life and the life of the Latin peoplesin America. The story is fluency. Its elaboration is fantastic. You canslip into the characters life and you can find the emotions in theirfeat. The pictures about the city, the music and the action are live inan enthusiastic fluctuation. The spiritual attitude is going to seduceeverybody. The complexity of the characters is brilliant. Sometimes thestory looks like too hard but this is only way of illustration thereality of the prison life. Damian Chapa, Jesse Borrego and BenjaminBratt made an excellent acting in this drama.

Glad to have seen it

I got this movie from my friend Alex and he told me to give it a look. I watched it 4 times before I returned it to him. this is a much deeper bond than the reviews make it sound like. That changes the whole movie knowing all 3 are family, 2 brothers and their cousin Miklo who have been together for most of their lives. When Miklo goes to jail and El Gallo Negro to the Military to avoid prison you realize sometimes blood is not as strong of a bond as some people think.Miklo thinks that the gangs and the fact he is familia with "the black rooster" makes him safe. Watch this movie and realize it is not a prison movie it is about the strong bonds in families as well as the ups and downs of being handicapped. Sometimes nothing can stop someone from doing right or wrong.

This is the greatest gang-movie ever!!!!!

The story is well done and the cast did a great job making a creepyatmosphere troughout the entire movie..... one of the few 3-hour-moviesthatcan keep you entertained for such a long time.Is there any other movie that comes close to this one?

Rip off of "American Me"

This tale of Mexican gangsters seems to be totally ripped off of the film"American Me", which was released one year earlier, a lot of the socialcomments are addressed in "American Me" and this movie just expands on theplot. Anyone who has seen "American Me" will realize that this is just aninferior effort with a bit more padding although the plot remains thesame.

Bound by Horror

I only watched this movie yesterday and I can say that it was rather toolong. Scenes dragged on and what could have been said or shown in fiveminutes lasted for twenty. The beginning of the film was slow and I was waiting for something tohappenand then when it finally does you're already worn out fromwatching. It did have some good scenes, worth watching, and the realisation thatsuchgangs and death actually exist really gets you thinking. It is a lesson initself and shows you what can happen if you get caught up ingangs. But it was too long and I have to say I was relieved when itended.
