Upon his release from a mental hospital following a nervous breakdown, the directionless Anthony joins his friend Dignan, who seems far less sane than the former. Dignan has hatched a hair-brained scheme for an as-yet-unspecified crime spree that somehow involves his former boss, the (supposedly) legendary Mr. Henry. With the help of their pathetic neighbor and pal Bob, Anthony and Dignan pull a job and hit the road, where Anthony finds love with motel maid Inez. When our boys finally hook up with Mr. Henry, the ensuing escapade turns out to be far from what anyone expected.
I'm a big fan of Wes Anderson's other work but had never sat down and watched "Bottle Rocket" all the way through.Unfortunately, it felt rather amateurish. The facets that make Anderson's other movies so satisfying are not very well fleshed-out here. Perhaps the obvious shoestring budget played a large role in it, but I didn't sense a strong conviction in the direction of the film. The script has some nice lines and some funny quirks, but not much resolve. Like some other reviewers, I just couldn't get why Anthony kept letting Dignan drag him into such clearly stupid plans.I do wish that I would have viewed this when it was new and I was young, and could see it now through nostalgic eyes. I think my opinion would be higher of the film.
the wilson brothers are great in this film. i see everything they do nowbecause of this movie. one of my five all time favorites. little thingsinthis movie make it so good. you will like it if you like movies likeraising arizona and european vacation.
This review is from: Bottle Rocket (DVD) Bottle Rocket has to be the best movie I have ever seen. Every aspect of each scene seems so basic, but every time you watch it you see how much genius goes in to every line. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson are the two best writers in the nation right now. People say that movies like Scarface or Caddyshack have the best lines, but after seeing Bottle Rocket, I think this is the king of great lines."Bob-Watch the road.""On the run from Jonny Law-Ain't no trip to Cleveland""Look at his guy Clay-He look's like a big banana!"Buy this movie Now!!
This review is from: Bottle Rocket (DVD) Someone said in their review this is "not a real ladies movie." What!?! I fell in love with Anthony and wanted to take Dignan home and just take care of him! This is a movie for ANYONE who appreciates subtle, intelligent humor and loves movies with great characters instead of movies with lots of explosions and fast cars.
This review is from: Bottle Rocket (DVD) The only gem in this film, (I am so sorry, Wes) is Luke Wilson's gas station attendants performance. I felt so sorry for him and his perspective in this movie.
Definitely one of the greatest films ever made. Perfect in so many ways. Anabsolute must see.
Dallas filmmakers Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson have crafted a delightfullysubtle comedy about small-time criminal wannabes. Unfortunately, the filmsuffers somewhat from a slow, obsolete, obviously-tacked-on romanticsubplotthat has no place in a film this hip and fresh. Although James Caan was thefilm's only name actor at the time of production [and it's one of his bestmovies in recent years], brothers Owen and Luke Wilson have since madenamesfor themselves as actors as well. Rumors of swollen budgets and on-settensions with infamous producers Kit Carson and Cynthia Hargrave aren'tevident in the final product, which--overall--is a fabulous debut film forAnderson.
It's a very subtle film. It takes time and getting used to. But theperformances are fantastic, and very dry. It's just a film that can make mesmile just thinking about it. I started drinking Tom Collins after it,thanks to Dignan. And I agree with James L. Brooks, who said that Dignan isthe greatest first name is movie history. Very comical, but it needs timetogrow.
I feel this movie is way under rated. Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson worktogether like chicken and gravy and pizza. Which means this movie isdelicious. A lot of the scenes were improvised by the genius of O-Dawg.If you haven't seen this, see it. It's one of my favorite movies ever. It's a little slow in parts, but in a good way. Having slow scenesrules. Kick back and get ready to laugh. Have fun with thismasterpiece. If you don't like this movie, you suck a little bit. Gettherapy OK? Take a couple pills and drink a beer. Relax and figure outwhat's funny. This move is funny. Go rent it dude. Owen Wilson is thegreatest actor ever.
This review is from: Bottle Rocket [VHS] (VHS Tape) I actually caught this at an indie theater in San Antonio the last day it ran. Wow! I was impressed and in love with Dignan! The music is also perfect. My favorite line is ...when that cop hit me he gave me CRS disease...! Love it! Most of the lines make me laugh out loud. Wish we could see more movies like this one and more of Owen Wilson as he is in this and Permanent Midnight.I aspire to Dignan's enthusiasm!
Bottle Rocket isn't one of those movies the average person would like, its alot like Rushmore & The Royal Tenenbaums. Wes Anderson has his own touch inall 3 of the movies which he has directed. Personally i liked Bottle Rocketa little more than Rushmore even though that was still a pretty good movie,Bottle Rocket is a bit of a slow movie & somewhat a little pointless attimes. Owen Wilson is pretty funny in this & Luke Wilson is more serious butstill funny. This movie really gets interesting towards the end of themovie, which makes you like the movie even more, even though a lot of thescenes at the start were pretty pointless. It's good how it's very differentto most of the comedies that come out now, I appreciated this movie for whatit is. Overall this movie is a good alternative movie for someone who likessomething different. Thumbs up for this i'll give it around a 7 / 10.
To this day this is still one of my favorite movies. I saw this on VHS originally in high school around 1996, when my buddy brought a copy over. I knew I liked it and later re-discovered it again a few years later and have since been a big Wes Anderson fan.Bottle Rocket creates a world where low level crime seems appealing. "A life of crime does pay". Dignan plays a great ringleader of the gang with his odd, quirky behavior. His brother Anthony plays the level headed character who falls in love with a girl, Inez, under unusual circumstances. It's cool to watch the chemistry between brother Luke and Owen in their acting debut. The criterion addition also includes the original 13 minute black and white short which was a nice addition.Great cinematography and music produced by Mark Mothersbaugh compliment the film very well. This is the movie that introduced me to the band "Love" as well as a host of others. Bottle Rocket's laid back breezy approach to crime is always a joy to watch.
A friend of mine said "you have to watch the funniest movie ever" and he was right the comic timing is odd, yet hilarious, Dignan is a heartbreakingingly pathetic person, played to perfection by Owen Wilson. JAMES CAAN! great casting, Dignan makes this better than Rushmore, although Bill Murray was great. A must see!@
Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson's finest. The humor is sometimes outlandish, sometimes so subtle you barely catch it. Owen and Luke Wilson's on-screencomedic chemistry is great! This movie has become my all-time favorite, anda perfect cure for a bad mood. The music is perfect for the film, though Ican't really describe why. It's good. It's good, cause it hits me righthere.
A rambling, oddball shaggy dog story, but it packs some real emotion and laughs along the way. Terrific understated performances, and good use of images and music.I recently watched it a 2nd time and thought I wasn't all that into it... until near the end, when it suddenly got me on a deeper level emotionally than on first viewing. There's something in it about the loss of childhood dreams that resonates beyond the silly and playful surface. Always a good sign when a film deepens with time and re-visiting.Of course Criterion do their usual great job with both the transfer and the extras, and seeing the original short film is very interestingand a lot of fun in it's own right.
Bottle Rocket is one of the most touching, and one of the funniest, offbeatcomedies I've ever seen. For some, its brand of subtle humor may be a bitoffsetting, but the deep themes underlying the shallow asides create aterrific story on every level. The movie, at its heart, is a brilliant takeon love as well as the things people will do for those they care for. Whilethe character of Dignan (a truly inspired performance by Owen C. Wilson, whohas since gone on to play shallow, surfer dude type characters in big budgetaction films) provides the central drive for the story, the heart of themovie lies in the character of Anthony, a man whose good nature, loyalty, and altruistic heart provides the thematic web on which the true force ofthe movie lies. Truly a great picture. I highly recommend one of myfavorite movies of recent years. Give it a chance; you won't be sorry.
"come on get on!" yells blond buzzcutt dapper self respect trimmed Dignonashepeels the two wheeled smoking rattle box through the lounge paved drivewayof a borrowed low slung suburbancrust class crash pad in front of which his brother stands."no, that thing is too small for the both of us."too small indeed. this is the most deeply insightful moving commentaryblahblah etc etcon this blah etc generation decade century millennium people postmodernetc etc you know and all that unlike the other sucky @#$@ this is good hahaha.anyways the best part about this movie is the way it smells. you can tellitwasshot in oklahoma because of the lighting and the wind on the faces of theactors and the sky and etc. wait let me check. ok i check the imdb. ok imwrong. so its was shot in texas. well its really damn close. anyways yougetthe idea i hope.
This review is from: Bottle Rocket (DVD) This is Wes Anderson's first movie and the last one I watched. Great story line and very entertaining. I bought it because it's definitely a movie that can be watched over and over.
For me, MTV has never been much of a cultural beacon. So it was quite asurprise when, as I was flipping through the channels, I caught thempresenting Wes Anderson with an award for best new director. At this time, back in 1996, I was but a promising but aimless high school student with avague notion of what I might do in college. Sometime later I found "BottleRocket" in a video store and gave it a try. What happened then can only bedescribed as a religious experience. That was the day I knew I would majorin film. Though this film may be too low profile to have any more than themost subtle of impacts on the industry, I think that future films by thisAnderson/Wilson team will change the face of comedy. The likes of theFarrelly brothers will find themselves in straight-to-video B-movie hellbefore long. I guess you could call me an optimist.
I rented this movie with high expectations after reading the reviews posted on this site. And with a very funny opening scene, and a great soundtrack, I was still encouraged. But after that, this film goes nowhere. It's one of those heavy dialog movies like Swingers, but the dialog just isn't very funny. You don't realize just how flat and amaturish the acting is until James Caan's two minutes in the film blow everyone else on the screen away. The final heist scene is hilarious, and there are some nice moments in between, but not enough to make it worth ninety minutes. Try Go or Swingers instead.
