The best of the new shows

I started watching this from the beginning, intrigued by Fox's promos. I had no idea who David Boreanaz or Emily Deschanel were, so I went into it with no expectations. The first episode was a bit awkward, but I saw something exciting there. I was a huge fan of the X-Files, and when Booth's character made reference to Mulder and Scully in the pilot, it made me snicker, because I didn't think that this was going to live up to the X-Files standard.I was wrong. After a few episodes that played around with the characters, they finally found the right mix, and it quickly became one of Fox's best, right up there with 24 and House, MD. David Boreanaz is absolutely wonderful, managing to make us giggle and cry, sometimes even in the same scene! Emily Deschanel is adorable too, and while she comes across as slightly wooden at times, it doesn't detract from the story because her character is supposed to be very detached. The supporting cast is also brilliant, with the socially awkward 'squint squad' rivalling the Lone Gunman for both comic relief as well as professional contribution to the cases. I'm looking forward to this coming out on DVD, and I hope Fox continues to promote and work with this show, because it has the potential to be the best.

The Funniest double act on television

This is another show I didn't know about till I was flicking throughthe TV one day and saw it, I have been hooked ever since.I really enjoy the partnership between Brennan(Emily Deschanel) andBooth (David Boreanaz), it is the funniest part of the show. Brennanhas the academic smarts and Booth has the street smarts and there isalways a debate in the show about which of their approaches work thebest, in fact they both work and that is why the partnership is sobrilliant. Another bone of contention is Booth's faith which Brennandoesn't understand as isn't visible and she, being a scientist needs tosee it before she can believe.I love the character of Temperance Brennan. The reason is she's not aperfect character, despite being very clever, she is always putting herfoot in her mouth quite a lot, she comes across as a know-it-all thatfeels superior to people who are not academic, never in a nasty way butmore matter of fact. She is also a very feisty heroine who doesn't needa man to take care of her, she has shown on more than one occasion sheisn't scare to take on bullies, even taking on a gang leader in one ofthe episodes. She also isn't afraid to use a gun if the occasion callsfor it.Another partnership that has been hilarious to see is Dr. Hodgins (T.J.Thyne) and Zack Addy (Eric Millegan) who always likes to carry outexperiments that always go wrong. They are like little kids when theyget to test their theories. It is sad that Zack has left the showbecause I miss the interaction between them especially when they arecompeting with one another.

Chemistry and Science

Sick of sitcoms I went looking for intelligent television and found itin Bones. Yeah, some of the science is unrealistic and happens at lightspeed comparative to real life forensic analysis, but it's science --and it's sexy. The characters are quirky and not canned, theycompliment each other well and there's plenty of friction. I'll keepwatching cause it's interesting and not badly written. Booth andBrennan keep us watching to see what she'll let him get away withbecause we all know she like him more than she lets on.I wish actual crime labs, forensics and morgues had these beautifullabs and stunning people that show up in television, then this dumb copwould be surrounded by hot people in amazing clothes, but until thenthere's television :)

It is what it is

This review is from: Bones: The Complete First Season (DVD) Thought this would be a typical series set but there are no pictures on the CD's just that 6 point font that I can't read. Also, did not realize you had to flip the CD over to see other episodes, no writing on the other side.A little disapointing but the episodes are great.

Stupidly unrealistic - nearly fairy tale level fantasy!

Okay, it's good to see Boreanaz again - I loved Angel. Here's the problem:If you're trying to create a modern-day crime drama you need toestablish a sense of adult realism combined with a realisticdevelopment of human relationships.1) Use the real tools of the trade and explain real limitations. 2)Demonstrate professional adult relationships with perhaps a dash ofoffice politics in the department. 3) Solve the case using REALscience. Be clever and research your subject. Keep experts on the setwho might correct you if you step over the line. This drama has NONE of that! A science-fiction hologram machinecreating details that are impossible to deduce. Impossible to reachconclusions such as the precise type of knife used in a murder or theweight of a hammer used to kill someone. Add to this mix; comic-book,2-Dimensional, cardboard relationships with contrived antagonismsapparently shared by everyone for everyone. Boreanaz's behaviors aremore reminiscent of a 40's Dick Tracy than a modern day criminalist anddisplays a contempt for scientists that is just absurd. If this show continues it would HAVE to change into something likeX-Files. The show has absolutely ZERO credibility and has severed anyconnection to the real world so it needs to move on to ascience-fiction/fantasy world.Either that or continue to assume that its audience is a group ofdrooling morons who really believe all this crap is possible. There will be those who jump to their feet screaming "It's JUST a TVprogram - it doesn't have to be realistic." These are JUST apologistsfor the lazy. It's EASY to fake it and hope your audience is too stupidto catch it. It's HARD to actually do the work and research yoursubject. "Can you figger out what kind of knife was used to stab avictim?" "I dunno, who cares, we got Boreanaz so just stick it inthere."

Technologically Interesting but otherwise routine

Happily, I see the show at this point is in its sixth season, so that nothing I might say will have any impact on its success. In brief, I did find the technical stuff interesting but the remainder of each show is a rather tedious, abbreviated rehash, of every man-professional woman relationship since Tracy and Hepburn made a series of classics (and, no doubt, before that). I have no quarrel with rehash when well done but here I find it so compressed and stereotyped as to make it nothing more than an adjunct to the modern machine stuff and predictable to boot.Overall, this first year would have discouraged me with it after several weeks were I watching it in real-time. Never having seen it on TV, perhaps I am mistreating an experience intended to be seen in 45 minute segments only once a week.Oh, yes, the discs themselves, while looking and sounding OK (so far as I can tell since I used the subtitles), forced me to get out the most powerful magnifying glasses I have just to read which side I was on and what it contained.

So good that you are going to feel it in the bones

I love this show. I have to say, the pilot is not that good but keep onwatching the episodes and I can assure you, you are gonna love it.The character are really amazing and you can see them dealing with reallife and their own "world of bones" at the same time. Zach is one ofthose character I don't really have much to say. Angie is really niceand at the same time I can't stand how she always seems to connect withthe cases they are working on. To emotional. Hodgins has his own viewof life and really wants to stay away from his family, so he spendsmost of the time at work... just like all the characters. Booth andBones have an amazing chemistry together and exact opposites, but atthe same time they are the same. Both of them, you can say, uses theirwork as a way to "fix" their personals issues.About the cases, it's amazing how they always seem to solve them in themost amazing and clever ways, LOVE IT.You have to see it.

Bones

Well, I never read the books so I guess I can't give an opinion onthat. As for the show, I really enjoyed it. I find that the charactersare interesting and the show has a BIG growth potential. I know I'llkeep watching! One of the doctors on the Lab team is the fella in the SUV commercialsinging his heart out to Shania Twain. I laughed so hard at thatcommercial. Anyway, I like that little guy! This show has much potential and I will look forward to seeing how theseason will progress.Okay, I think that's enough.

TOO EXPENSIVE!

This review is from: Bones: The Complete First Season (DVD) You can purchase the 1st and 2nd season together at walmart for a little over $20. My wife pointed that out after i overpaid here!

Truly excellent!

This programme is pure genius. The main characters play off each other so well because they are so very different.Booth is light-hearted and shows his emotions (up to a point - he is a man!) where as Temperance has been so effected by the disappearance of her parents and her perceived abandonment by her brother she is unable to show her emotions. She has no social skills to speak of and this makes her unique and very interesting. The supporting cast are also great, individual and complex. The comments about poor acting really made me annoyed so I have had to put my opinion in. Emily (Temperance) is supposed to be hard and unfeeling, that is the point of her character! When she delivers emotive dialogue it is supposed to be wooden as she is unable to express how she feels, her work is everything so even when holding her mother's skull she is the consummate professional and doesn't let emotion cloud her work.I have looked forward to this programme (and CSI; NY) every week and have watched every episode even though they play opposite Lost and Invasion and Cold Case and Close To Home here in New Zealand.I can't wait til this is released on DVD and am extremely happy to hear there will be another Series.

Logic Meets Instinct

There are a LOT of crime procedurals/dramas on TV nowadays, but Bonesdefinitely stands out. What makes Bones so different is that it mixeshumour and drama perfectly. Plus it doesn't hurt that the whole cast isgood-looking. True, sometimes the sex discussions can be a bit over thetop sometimes but that can be overlooked by the episodes that just showhorrific crimes and the team of squints bringing the criminal tojustice. David Boreanaz's portrayal of Booth is beyond brilliant, it'sas if he was born for the role. Emily Deschanel does pull of Brennanquite well, although I think the writers should make her a little lessclueless about pop-culture (she's been working with Booth and the othersquints for years now so she should've learned something). OtherwiseBones is a fantastic show, it brings out all the right emotions in meat the right time. I cried when Booth went in for his brain surgery andlaughed when Hodgins hit himself in the face with nunchucks. Brilliantshow, which should be higher on the list of best TV shows.

Mystery; yeah it's got that too.

I'm not going to tell you that Bones is the best show ever; I won'teven tell you that you're definitely going to love it; but I will tellyou why you should.Bones mixes fast paced crime drama, with romantic comedy, and stillleaves enough explosions, bugs, and dead bodies for your boyfriend tolike it too. It's not just another crime drama, that leaves you guessing who killedthe guy. Well yeah it has that; but there is also a more human elementto it. It's not forced, it just is.If any part of you likes a good mystery; if you enjoy being on the edgeof your seat wondering what's going to happen next. If you findyourself trying to find the answers before the main characters do;you'll like this. Not only is there mystery among with the crimes, buteven among the characters.I suggest you watch an episode, and decide for yourself. I also suggestpicking up a book by Kathy Reichs; they're very different from theshow, but still VERY good.

An intriguing idea with a disappointing script (*Minor spoilers*)

I am sorry to say that this particular show may have been sweet talkedpast the head honchos at FOX, but it won't fool viewers. A summary ofthe show (which I won't give here) might offer comparisons to showslike CSI or Cold Case. Unfortunately, this show pales in comparisonwith a very weak and predictable script that does not show any faith inthe intelligence of its viewers (i.e. EVERYTHING is explained - everyprocedure, all of the theories, down to every joke, every detailed stepof the way.) The script is so bogged down in explanation, the viewerhas no chance of being engaged in the show itself, or even laugh atlines that have potential for being entertaining and humorous, becausethe show just tries too hard to be funny. (I see similarities in thecharacter played by David Boreanaz to the character of House.) Overall, this show definitely has some potential, and it's an interestingconcept, but the acting by most of the major characters is quite weak, and the script needs some serious re-vamping. (It needs a little visitfrom ABC's "Extreme Makeover" and I don't mean that it in a kind way)Penny Marshall from TV's "Laverne and Shirley" makes a slightlyhumorous cameo where the "time and space paradox" is mentioned, andaffects viewers too young (and without a cable connection that offersreruns of classic shows). The only lead actor on this program that shows any potential is AngelaMontenegro in the role of Michaela Conlin, to who I would advise to getout of this show as quickly as possible and get somewhere where peoplewill see your talent. (Or an alternative might be to ask for a raise, because without you to carry the show, it will disintegrate evenfaster.) In short, it's pretty obvious that this show was added to theschedule in an attempt for FOX to latch on to the CSI craze, but thisseries lacks all of the intelligence, acting talent, humor, and specialeffects. I recommend if you are looking for a show like CSI, trysticking with CSI.

Bones is good.

This review is from: Bones: The Complete First Season (DVD) I really enjoyed this cd's. I really don't like the "Bones" doctor being so technical and perfect. The stories seem to center on mainly her and not the rest of cast. I hope it will get better.

Liked it enough to keep watching

I found the first 15 minutes or so to be a little "trite". Thecharacters didn't seem to fit comfortably in their skin. But by the endof the pilot I was very much interested, especially in the forensicsaspect. I have a friend who is an anthropologist and I'm going to gether opinion about the Dr. Brennan character. The series has a lot of potential and I especially like that unlike XFiles, these characters are dealing with "real life" events rather thanother worldly events.I think the lead actors are good together and am looking forward to thebuilding of their chemistry together. Whether as working partners orromantics, I don't care, I just want there to be a degree of tensionbetween them that will keep things interesting.

Bruce_the_Brilliant 2012-04-25 11:11:43

Disappointing, bordering on dire

I a essentially a reader who enjoys movies and TV, rather than theother way round, and to see the Temperance Brennan of the admirablethriller series by Kathy Reichs degraded to this asinine bimbette was adisappointment. Emily Deschanel is pretty enough but has none of theintellectual weight needed to carry the role. Little Emmy is only 30for Christ's sake, she would have just left school and could in no wayhave qualified for the job she is portrayed doing. The score is a jarring nightclub shade of bland and the script isbanal. It was obviously put together by someone with no real clue whatscience is all about and who has presumably never read the books. It's a shame; both Hart Hanson and Kathy Reichs can do much better.I bet Kathy is pleased that her name isn't prominently featured in thecredits.

Hopelessly inferior to other shows

As much as I have tried to give the show the benefit of the doubt, Icannot bring myself to like Bones. Being a fan of CSI etc. I expected asomewhat generic but entertaining who-done-it with scientifictrappings. Alas, I was disappointed with what has become a poor copy ofprevious shows in the genre. Yes, it might have all the trappings of adecent TV show, but it has no soul. The characters are clichéd andunlikable, the plots two-dimensional and the jokes utterly trite.I find the characters of Brennan and Booth quite irritating, and I mustadmit I find myself totally unsympathetic to their plight, which byitself drags the show down immensely. Booth, instead of providing therough edged guy-with-feelings character we came to appreciate in othershows, comes across as somewhat thuggish, thick headed and uncaring inmany plots. I would suggest the poor script writing failed DavidBoreanaz (the acting highlight), as he should have been a somewhat morelikable character. Brennan on the other hand has absolutely no likablepersonality traits, a horrific combination of her depressing monologues(almost every episode) and her unpleasantly formulaic reactions tosociety or culture. “I don’t know what that is” (in reference to apopular film/actor/song) may be cute once or twice, but as a charactermainstay it becomes utterly tedious. Likewise, her constant criticismof Booth’s catholic upbringing (or his feelings, intuition etc.)renders her character as both arrogant and unpleasant.Secondly, the show has no intellectual value whatsoever. Plot devicesare crude and unimaginative, scientific jargon is copiously thrownaround just to show off and ultimately every imaginable ‘twist’ isspelt out, just in case you missed it. There is an overuse of ‘labtechniques’ (a trap CSI falls into at times) to hide the lack ofsubstance in the scripts, as well as a lot of posturing for it’s ownsake. Similarly, there is only so much Tough-Cop Vs. Geeky-Scientistdialogue that a person can take before being able to predict thedialogue verbatim, allowing me to practice a primitive form of fortunetelling. Temperance Brennan would not approve, and would doubtlesslyjump at the chance to dispel me via a long, depressing and pompousmonologue. That being said, it isn’t all that bad. The direction and cameratechniques are quite good (though the overuse of ‘blue screen’ in somescenes is just cheap), and the inclusion of Stephen Fry was a welcomedistraction for an episode or two. The music backing is acceptable too,but doesn’t provide any ambiance or setting. A 4/10 is justified, onlybecause giving any lower would be a discredit to some of the decentacting and reasonable direction that this show enjoys.

Great show

I absolutely love Bones. It is a fantastic show. It contains all theelements I look for in a show. Drama, mystery, humor, sexual tensionand interesting characters!! And did I mention humor? I laugh so muchsometimes that I have to rewind to see what I missed. I think HartHanson has another winner here. I will admit that the only reason Istarted watching Bones was to see David Boreanaz. And as usual he isdoing an excellent job on this series. However, I have come to love allof the characters. And if you like looking at David Boreanaz you willalso like looking at T.J. Thyne. He is more than just pretty eyes. Andnot only did casting do an excellent job with the weekly cast, but theguests stars have been phenomenal. If you like the show be sure andcheck out Kathy Reichs books also. There are different from the show, but they are so well written, interesting and funny also. I just lovepeople with a good sense of humor!!

First Impressions - Bones

Any show that starts off with a hot chick flashing has got myattention, now the only question is if Bones can keep my attentionafter that. The show, itself focuses around Dr. Temperance Brennen, aforensic anthologist, and her team as they help the FBI solve mysteriesthat involve, ironically enough, bones. On the surface, it looks likeCSI: Washington D.C., but Bones has humanity to it, delving into thelives of the characters then he 52 shows of the CBS series. The shows stars Emily Deschanel, best know for being Zooey sister, whoin turn is best known for being random girl #5 in a couple of moviesthat have shown up on Comedy Central every once in a while, as the Dr.and David Boreanaz, who will be known as Angel for the rest of hislife. Boreanaz has been fortunate playing Angel as he was surrounded bygreat actor the hid his wooden demeanor although his dry wit that hedisplayed as a vampire comes through in this role. But the breakoutstars of the cast are the supporting characters including theuber-smart young dude, the conspiracy theorist who could be anillegitimate child of one of the Lone Gunman, and the toke hot computerchick, who was the previously mentioned flasher. The first episode was well contrasted with our fair Dr. being stoppedat the airport by homeland security, but it only turns out to be a plotby Angel, who just wants to bring in the Dr., who he affectionatelycalls Bones because who wants to say Temperance, to help him out on acase. I like how the two have had history and we are brought in aftertheir last case didn't go too well. But since Bones is the best in thebusiness, Angel has to cave into her request for full disclosure in thecase and even asks "Do you want to be Mulder or Scully." But this leadsBones into some trouble as she is not aware of protocol and breaks afew laws along the way while solving the case at hand, the discovery ofan intern who has been missing for a couple years.Verdict: I'm not the biggest fan of crime dramas, but the first episodewas well written and I'll get the show a couple more viewings as thereis nothing much on Tuesdays at 8:00. Plus I'd like to hear theconspiracy try to top his "Monica Lewinski was a sex robot created bythe KGB" theory.
