This is a very enjoyable movie that takes a typical formula and puts it into an attractive setting. It's the formula of the struggling young athlete, who has potential raw talent to be great in the field, but has some of life's obstacles thrown in the way to make it happen. Some are character flaws, some are being dealt some bad cards in life. The athlete needs to overcome these obstacles in time for the big game so they can, well, you know. But these stories can be very enjoyable when they take us to new worlds. In this case, the sport is surfing, the location is Hawaii, and the star is a hot blonde who spends much of her time in bikinis or her underwear. With all these potential winners going for it, Hollywood still has the ability to wreck it with the leering, sniggering attitude towards sex that today's teen comedies take. Thankfully, this is bypassed. We get all the good stuff described above, but without the potential blueprint for destruction. There are no cardboard idiot characters in the movie. There is grossness, like when the girls, working as chambermaids, discover a really trashed room, but it's handled realistically. There is sexuality, but it's also handled tastefully, especially when the youngest sister shows an incredible amount of poise by having a mature discussion about the topic with a 400-pound football player. All in all it's a good story that I have no problem showing to my nine-year-old daughter to aid in some lessons on life.
This movie is definitely aimed at the current MTV generation, and anyoneelse probably won't enjoy it very much. The story is very simple -- itsabout a girl who wants to be a surfer champion...don't worry, they don'treally spend much time going in to the sexual politics of surfing. Theyadded a cheasy love scene and lots of cool surfing scenes and -- VOILA --Blue Crush! This movie is not worth the ten bucks I didn't have to pay (freescreening),but I suppoose it is worth a rental.
Blue Crush (2002) Kate Boswell, Matthew Davis, Michelle Rodiguez, Sanoe Lake, Mika Boorem, Chris Taloa, Kala Alexander, Ruben Tejada, D: John Stockwell. Susan Orlean's magazine article, Surf Girls of Maui is stretched into a feature-length chick flick that does catch some credibility from the girls' blue-collar jobs as hotel maids and their bonding. Hard-hitting surfer Boswell bunks with her fourteen-year-old sister and childhood buddies (Rodriguez, Lake) in an island shack and being the best of the three, she takes a risk by entering a contest among the hotshots to surf the world's biggest wave, the Pike Master, with the danger of colliding against the reef; Davis plays her NFL-football crush whom she gives surfing lessons and could affect her chances to win. Remains conventional and equivalent to any teen movie with not enough substance to last longer than its article basis. Not a total wipeout from good wave footage filmed in Oahu, Hawaii. Running Time: 104 minutes and rated PG-13 for sexual content, teen partying, language, and a fight.
When i watched this movie i felt a RUSH of comedy and action./ I loved the story it made me feel like i was in the movie surfing. that was awsome for me because i love to surf. Blue Crush should be the RUSH of the year i think!
Another shallow movie with a bunch of young MTV punks who can't act their way out of a paper bag, Hollywood should be ashamed!
Blue Crush does have the grace to get two things right- David Hennings (VeryBad Things) on photography greatly captures the surfing sequences, inparticular the beginning ones that give off a colorful, vibrant feel, andalso the girls in the movie have a realistic attitude on life, if realismfor you is girls who are on Hawaii surfing in their free time. While toomuch of the injected skag of usual turns and characters are found in BlueCrush, not to mention the always important climactic contest (can a sportsfilm not lead to a major contest in the end?) and (spoiler) picture of thewinner on the cover of surfing magazine, while all that is there, there isan audience for Blue Crush, and they ride that wave out. C+
OK, it's rated PG-13 because it has teen partying, language, sexualcontentand a fight. So you might think already, it's stupid, and you should saveyour money. Yet, this one is worth it. Instead of it being all about goingout and wasting your life over some stupid guy/girl you've met thenight/daybefore, the main character (played well by Kate Bosworth) meets herboyfriend on a wave (I don't remember who it is but he was goodtoo). After her mother leaves her, Kate Bosworth is destined to win an annualsurfcompetition. She has been training all year for this and she doesn't wanttoblow it. She and her two best friends work in a hotel, until one day shegets fired. Her sister is a smoker, so she doesn't have the most charminglife style. She meets a boy when she's trying to teach him how to surf.Butmeeting him soon takes up her life. She comes home late and leaves herfriends and sister by themselves. What makes this movie better than other sports teen movies, is that itfocuses more on the sport, than just falling in love. Grade:B+
Let's face it, surf movies don't exactly make for Oscar-worthy drama, so Ifor one went to the theater expecting lots of surfing and lots ofbeach-bum-babes. The good news is this movie is much more than a 2-hourepisode of Baywatch.Yeah, there's plenty of hot chicks, but they aren't on a Sport IllustratedSwimsuit photoshoot here, they're serious surfers. The lead character,Anne-Marie, has some serious issues to deal with. In addition to overcomingthe trama of nearly drowning in a surfing competition, she working forminimum-wage as a maid for a fancy Oahu hotel, and struggling to take careof her rebelious little sister and pay the bills. (It's kind of funny howthis movie paralells Lilo and Stitch). But who cares about the back story? This movie's about surfing, and surfingyou will get. The camera work is great, you can almost feel the 20 footwaves crashing down on you. Don't listen to the people who say wait for thevideo, because your tv isn't going to portray the intensity and mass of thewaves. If you're even somewhat interested in seeing it, you have to see itin the theater. So while the non-surfing portions are pretty cliche and forgettable, thesurfing is awesome, so at least see a matinee.
I thuoght that this movie was going to be all stupid and dramatic, but when I saw it, it was really good! I loved it and so will you because if you love to play sports and stuff then you will like this movie please go ceck this on out!
Not even one bad word about the outstanding movie 'Blue Crush' ! This is the best adventure movie for all people who are interested in surfing! The surf-shots are awesome. Director John Stockwell has done a great job! Acting is also great! Kate Bosworth, Michelle Rodriguez and Mika boorem are great! And introducing Sanoe LAke has done a great job.For all sport-people: ... go see this movie if you haven't seen it!
Would you guys get a grip and READ what this movie is??? It is NOT the "Blue Crush" movie with Kate Bosworth!! Look at what you're ordering! Before you start blabbing about things and looking stupid!THIS movie (by the same name) is a DOCUMENTARY!!!!!!! BTW...BOTH are very good. But remember...it's better to keep your mouth shut and look like a fool, than speak and prove it.
I hate to throw cold water (no pun intended) on a film that most reviewers seem to have enjoyed, but a thoughtful look at this movie reveals it's not really an awful lot to cheer about. The story is old-hat cliche'; Young, aspiring girl overcomes fear based on an earlier accident and triumphs over obstacles. In the meantime, there is the obligatory romance with jock, fight with long-time girl-friend who is living vicariously through our heroine and much-expected and telegraphed final denouement. The soundtrack is certainly nothing to write home about. Technically, it's not good. There are many places where the dialogue is all but unintelligible (turn on the captions). The selection of music is questionable, at best. This movie supposedly used surfing as its vehicle for getting its message across, yet the soundtrack is almost exclusively rap--great if you're a fan of Eminem, but where are the great old surf songs of the 60s?The acting is passable, if predictable. We don't really care too much about these girls, with the possible exception of Penny, our heroine's young (12-13?), whiney, bratty sister who mouths off to her older sister and friends, smokes and displays her knowledge of sex at the drop of a hat. We never do find out what happens to her. Anyway, the surfing footage is adequate, although I don't understand what the fuss is all about regarding the "fabulous footage". It's nice, but I've seen better camera shots on ABC's old "Wide World of Sports" when it used to cover the Pipeline championships. But the bonus extras on the DVD are nice.Summarily, it's a nice movie to waste 90 minutes on, but don't expect it to live up to the hype of most of the reviewers here.
When you see the name of Oscar winning producer Brian Grazer (A BEAUTIFUL MIND, 8 MILE) in the credits, you could be forgiven for expecting something special. Sadly BLUE CRUSH (related to the earlier doco in name only) is about as formulaic as movies get and has everything a surfing fan could ever want. For guys who aren't into surfing, Kate Bosworth (REMEMBER THE TITANS) and Michelle Rodriquez (RESIDENT EVIL) are in bikinis for pretty much the whole movie. That's basically BLUE CRUSH's drawcard. The shoestring plot surrounds Anne Marie (Bosworth) and her dream of winning the world's most dangerous surf competition, the PIPE MASTER. The only problem is the other competitors are all male chauvinist pigs (so that gives female viewers something to [ogle]) and so Anne Marie predictably (as is the case in so many movies coming out these days) sets out to prove them wrong and win the prize. Surfers will enjoy all the action, but anyone else will be bored stiff. BLUE CRUSH is basically the surfing equivalent of COYOTE UGLY or FLASHDANCE. Flashy commercial garbage that people will watch anyway, and then feel annoyed at wasting 100 minutes of their time. When will Rodriquez finally get a chance to fulfill the promise she showed in GIRLFIGHT?
I do not understand why movies like this get made. It is predictable the actors do not know how to act.Very mainstream,Scammainstream.......... Warning for surfer lovers only.
I absolutley LOVED this movie! It shows that girls can kick butt at waydifficult things!Kate Bosworth as Anne Marie Chadwick couldn't have been done better! Shereally got into the character and made it believeable. Every character shehas done is like that too! She had some great lines in the movie too! Ihopeto see her in a lot of movies soon!Michelle Rodreguiz did a great job as Eden. She showed her famous "toughgirl" role, but didn't make it seem like she was just one of the guys. Sheis a great actress. She did a good job with the other characters in themovie too.Sanoe Lake was very good. For her first movie she seemed like she has donethis a million times! I especially liked the fact that she lives in Hawaiiand knows what she is doing out there and not risking killing herselfduringfilming. She better be in some other movies soon!Mika Boorem as Penny was great. She was a very believable 14 year old andreminds me of my friends. I have a Disney Sing Along Video with her in itwhen she was about 5! Well anyways she was very good in the movie andseemedlike a little sister who's mom left her.Overall everyone did a great job in this movie. I wouldn't mind seeing itagain and again! I can't wait untill it comes to dvd for me tobuy!P.S. I think that you have seen the plot before but i havent since im onlythirteen and i thought it was a good plot! Reminds me of Bring ItOn!
I love to surf and this just brought it alive. It has two stories going on in one. There is the romanitic story and the kick [bottom] surfing story. Its about a group of twenty year old girls who have been surfing since they were 6 and now are surfing the Bonzai Pipeline. I think it is the best movie of the year.
This movie should have had a lot going for it. There should be plenty of eye candy to go around with the scenery and the cast. But, what passes for a plot is reed thin. The actors state their lines like they are reading them off cue cards for the first time. There are also holes in the surfing and employment details. I did not care for one character in the entire production. Had it not been for the scenery, this effort would deserve an F at best.
Blue Crush is a gratifying movie. It has the potential to get your vision stuck on the screen. The presentation of the film is really good. It would make you feel as if you were in a "surfing" atmosphere. It has a very simple story but an extraordinary rendition. The movie came to a point where in the story became a drag. That didn't bother me at all because its presentation, visuals, and acting kept the movie in an electric pace. Overall, the movie was good and memorable. Watching the film is definitely worth it.
Started as a great comparison to earlier Redford film, and would have been better off if they'd stuck to that formula. Both 'events' are at the extreme of their sport, very comparable -- and enthusiasts similar personalities. "Best" really are at the razors edge. This isn't a 'story', it's a personality description.Contestants absolutely consumed by sport, all else secondary. Hangers on (in this case guys) don't really see it.Hadn't remembered Bosworth's first film (Horse Whisper) and Redford connection until after seeing Blue Crush.Final shots should have been her sister coming down the pipe, not her.
I LOVED THIS MOVIE.THE STORY THIS MOVIE WAS TRYING TO TELL IS IF YOU WORK HARD FOR SOMETHING AND IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU CAN DO IT.BUT YOU GO AN HEAD AND DO WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF DOING ANY WAYS.THIS MOVIE SHOWS THEN THAT YOU CAN ACOMPLISH YOUR GOAL IF YOU KEEP ON TRYING.INSTEAD OF GIVING UP ON AN DREAM YOU MY HAVE.THE ACTING IN THIS MOVIE WAS REALLY GOOD.I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS MOVIE.IT IS AN MUST SEE MOVIE IN MY BOOK.
