The summer of 2000 will be remembered for being the summer of movies that did not make us laugh. Sure there were some exceptions, but there also were two films that made us realize that unfunny comedians get paid way too much in this country. The first black eye to comedies was that of nutty professor II. a painfully unfunny film that featured an ego maniac (eddie murphy) in 6 different roles, many of them in "fat suits". come on eddie, you need a "fat suit" to get laughs. then comes Martin Lawrence. another comedian with a complex, this one not so much with his ego, but the thought that everything he does is funny to everyone. well, truth be told, you are only funny to yourself Martin. does anyone realize that someone does not need to have a funny costume on to get laughs. real comedy is made with situations and clever dialogue. comedy needs to come from those that are truly funny, not those that get paid way to much to annoy us with the same formulaic jokes that we have seen over and over again. I think i speak for many of Americans when i say that Martin and Eddie owe some of us some money for having to watch these painfully unfunny films
This was worth seeing if you just want to get out of the house, but not asgood as Lawrence's other movies such as A Thin Line Between Love and HateorLife. The make up job was good but not as good as the make up the was doneon Eddie Murphy in the Nutty Professor or in Life. 6/10
I am a fan Martin Lawrence and some of his movies, like " Thin Line BetweenLove and Hate" and " Life" but it's films like this that make me ask why hemade it. Normal going undercover film, he plays Malcolm and man that goesundercover as a big lady to get close to a women, Sherry(Nia Long),suspected of helping her ex-boyfriend Lester(Terrence Howard) of robing thebank she worked for. Malcolm has help from his partner, John(Paul Giamatti)to make up the suit and to keep him in check when Malcolm begins to fall inlove with Sherry. I really didn't enjoy this film but I'll admit that someof it was funny but most of it was boring. I liked three preformances inthis film, I liked Paul Giamatti as John because I am just a fan of himsince his great role in " Howard Stern's Private Parts", I also likedTerrence Howard as the villian, though his role isn't large, when he is onscreen, he is good, and last but not least I liked Anthony Anderson asNolan, the dumb brother of one of Sherry's friends. I don't suggest you goand see this film for laughs, I didn't get any, if you want to see a funnyfilm, wait for June 23 and watch " Me, Myslef, and Irene" now there is afunny movie.
If you are looking for a good laugh buy this movie. Fans of Martin Lawrence will definatly enjoy this.
Well I thought that this movie was going to be the bomb because it had Martin the comedian of all comedians. However once reviewing it I was a little disappointed because it was like I had heard most of the jokes in previous movies, so I really felt like I knew what was coming next. I do believe that ole Martin needs to get some more jokes before he makes another movie.
When I read the comment at this site about the film, I spontaneouslydecidedto add mine.We saw the film in a lesson of Business English - which seems quite odd -but I really enjoyed it. It was not as flat as I expected, actually it wasreally funny and romantic. I had not seen a film with Martin Lawrencebeforeand found him really cude. Also his girlfriend "Sherry" is verysexy...And at last, the music was really good: The soundtrack met my favour andthegospel song "happy day": I could not sit quiet any longer...So my opinion about the film is much more positive: I think it's the rightfilm to pass a nice video session with some chips andlaughter!!!
i just saw this movie yesterday, and thought it was hilarious! I don't knowy people r comparing this to the Nutty Professor. The ONLY similarities: Twomen in a fat rubber suit. Differences: School teacher, and FBI Agent. Soanyway the story's about a master of disguise FBI Agent Malcolm(MartinLawrence), who goes deep undercover as a fat old woman to protect andhopefully to get information from her granddaughter Sherry(Nia Long) on abank robbery her ex-boyfriend commited. Malcolm has to stake-out Big Momma'sHouse, and in the process he finds out she's going out of town. So hedresses up as Big Momma. This movie is hilarious! And i didn't even see thereal version. I give it 9/10.
This review is from: Big Momma's House (Special Edition) (DVD) I love this movie and couldn't believe I didn't own it! It's hilarious and entertaining the entire way through! It's truly a classic.
This was a surprisingly good comedy, despite the predictability of itand the typically-sappy Hollywood ending. Nevertheless, this film has abunch of laugh- out-loud scenes and jokes and Martin Lawrence is alikable guy. He has the ability to make us laugh just by making goofyfaces. His best were when he was trapped in the bathroom behind theshower curtain when the real "Big Momma" (Ella Mitchell) was taking adump a few feet away! The looks of Lawrence's face during that periodwere hilarious! Lawrence eventually dresses as a big fat woman and provides laughsdoing so. Ever since the early days of television and Milton Berle, people have laughed at men dressing up imitating women. Pretending tobe a 300-pound woman makes it even funnier.Throw in a pretty female lead (Nia Long) and a little drama to go alongwith the yuks and it winds up being a decent movie.
Big Momma's House is directed by Raja Gosnell, written by DarrylQuarles and Don Rhymer, and stars Martin Lawrence, Paul Giamatti, NiaLong & Terrance Howard. Lawrence plays FBI Agent Malcolm Turner whogoes undercover as "Big Momma" Hattie Mae Pierce (Ella Mitchell), so asto hopefully snare escaped convict Lester Vesco (Howard). "Big Momma"is the aunt of Vesco's ex-wife, Sherry (Long), who is on her way to"Big Momma's" to hide out after hearing of Lester's escape. In spite of baffling critics-and not finding many casual film viewerswilling to say they enjoyed it! the film was a surprise hit and openedas the number two movie in North America. It went on to gross over $117million at the box office and subsequently ensured that a sequel wouldfollow down the line (it arrived in 2006). The film isn't pretending tobe anything other than the mindless comedy it is. If viewed on thoseterms then it can be enjoyed. Sure some of the gags are puerile, andLawrence is an acquired taste, tho his energy and comedy timing arefirst rate here. But it does work to a degree. It's been done better inthe likes of Tootsie and Mrs. Doubtfire, and the plot, with it'sboorish romantic strand, is merely an excuse for "Big Momma" to getinto daft scrapes. Yet the action is nicely staged and the pace of thepiece never sags. There's also fun to be had in watching Giamatti &Howard looking like they just know they should be doing better stuffthan this!.Forgettable juvenile fluff for sure, but likable enough; in that brainat the door-bucket of popcorn-way. 6/10
wow just watching this movie and you know your gonna laugh Martin Lawernce is a funny guy ever since he did 1990's House Party and that was a funny movie but this one i laugh get the giggles oh man real funny movie can't wait to see the 3rd one but this one was probably the best one outta all The Big Momma's House movies!
I thought this movie was pretty good for a comedy, martin lawrence washilarious in his performance they are lots of laughs. I recommend thismovieto martin fans.i give this a 10/10
I never saw this movie during its original theatrical release. I neversaw this movie during its original showings on premium cable. I onlyviewed it some eight years later. I wish I had never seen it at all. This has got to be one of the stupidest movies I have ever watched inmy whole life. Almost, but not quite as bad as Weekend At Bernie's. Thewhole premise of the film is a complete insult to just about anyone'sintelligence. The key to making even a very incredulous plot linepalatable is to create one in which the audience will at least WANT tobelieve. To me, this film doesn't even come close to meeting that test. But one redeeming value I got from it was that it made my mind up veryquickly that I will never watch Big Momma's House 2.
Don't compare this to an Eddie Murphy movie, Martin is not Eddie. Don'tread too deep into the movie, just enjoy it. The laughs are aplenty buttheyare mostly predictable. I liked the movie cause I was in a mood not tothink, and the time moved quickly. You will definitly have to suspenddisbelief. I did think Martin put on a good performance in and out of thefat suit.
I think we should take Big Momma's House as a comedy, nothing more, nothingless. At first I thought it was really bad, but then I was watching it theother night and my ribs were tickling. When Big Momma was fulfilling therole as the local midwife, I was in a hysterical fit, as she applied thecooking oil, to lubricate for the pathway for the baby (sick I know). Thesecurity guard was an absolute nutter, when he walked into Malcolm's place, and he thought Big Momma had been carved up. If you haven't seen the movieyet, you should see what happens with the flashlight. Great Comedy, worth of a 7 out 10.
Big Momma's House is a brilliant!! movie, one of the best I have seenin a long time. I think that Martin Lawrence played a great part as bigmomma in this film. My favourite part of the film is the bathroomscene!!, how can we all forget that scene in a hurry, When MartinLawrence character Malcolm Turner sneaks into big momma's house andhides surveillance equipment in big mommas house and while he is doingthis big momma comes into the house so Malcolm turner hides in theBathroom away from big momma, then big momma came into the bathroom andran to the toilet pan and put her pants down to her ankles and saysbless this oh lord and after that Malcolm turners character is nearlysick with the smell, then all of a sudden big momma starts to take hercloths and you see her fat ass and well lets just say that it was not apleasant sight. The other scene I like in the film is the scene where aGirl is having a baby and "The fake big momma", tries to get the babyout by plunger. I would advise one to see this movie because it suremade me laugh but it had a sad twitch to it.
Although critics claimed it had plenty of rude jokes, there were virtuallynone. Malcolm goes undercover as a suspect 's grandmother to find out howmuch she knows about her former boyfriend, a dangerous felon. Although thelook and feel is very much like MRS. DOUBT FIRE, it is nowhere close. SinceI wanted to like this movie, it's kind of a shame to know that it is prettymuch BLUE STREAK, or a sequel of it. Martin Lawrence definitely has to get abetter act going for him sooner or later. The jokes seem to just keepgetting dryer, no matter how original they are.
Martin Lawrence is FBI agent, Malcolm Turner, and he specializes ingoing undercover in disguise. He gets a case involving missing moneywhich turns out to be tied up with a former girlfriend of the bankrobber named Lester. Sherry(Nia Long) is implicated in the robbery ofthe bank, and her grandmother, big momma has a large house whichMalcolm is staking out. When big momma leaves for a couple of weeks,Malcolm puts on a dress a wig and impersonates the large woman, even tothe point of fooling Sherry and her ten year old son. She believes thatgrandma is acting strange due to senility. Lawrence is a talented comic, and he does well as the cross dressingFBI agent, and Nia Long is beautiful as the love interest. I have anallergy to men dressing as women, whether it's old clips of MiltonBerle, or Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in the horrendous, Some Like itHot, I am not amused. Big Momma's House is just another run of the millslapstick comedy, and a 5/10.
this is a really funny movie. martain lawrance at his best. i really can't say anything more this is a good movie. it's a must see
This review is from: Big Momma's House (Amazon Instant Video) It's an ok movie. My grandson really likes it and wanted to see it. I personally don't care for several parts of it.
