They don't make comedies like this anymore....

This review is from: Big Business (DVD) I am SOOO HAPPY this is finally being released on DVD (my VHS copy has been watched so many times, it's not that good anymore!). This is a great story about TWO sets of twins that are born in this rinky dink hospital in Jupiter Hollow, only to have one twin from each set mixed with the other. It's a hilarious romp and definitely a feel good movie. I think far too many critics these days miss that point. If a movie makes you feel good and makes you want to watch it over and over again, that's a 5 star movie. Big Business will keep you coming back for a great does of monkey business!! Viva Tomlin and Midler!!

You can't outsnake me (hiss hiss, rattle rattle)

A great movie (almost as good as Maid to Order) Lily Tomlin should have won an Oscar for her dual roles, especially as country Rose when she makes her fingers in fangs and hisses while rattling her bracelets like a snake. She also talks to the fruit in her hotel room thinking it's bugged!) This movie is for anyone who has been given a half stick of gum by somebody and wondered what's the point of that?! 'What flowers do you want? Roses or Carnations?' 'Roses!' 'Hey! I'm Rose!' It's a great film! Fine cinema!

Snappy, flashy fun.

The lives of two sets of twins are about to be changed drastically. Sometimein the 1940's, the Sheltons, a wealthy couple, are driving through thesleepy town of Jupiter Hollow. Wife Binky is heavily pregnant, and shesuddenly goes into labour. Rushing to the nearest hospital, they find thatthey can't be taken in, since it is primarily for the use of HollowmadeFurniture employees. Mr. Shelton quickly buys the company, and they areallowed in. Meanwhile, slack-jawed locals the Ratliffs are expecting yetanother blessed event, and they give birth at the same time. Both mothersgive birth to twin girls, but a senile nurse accidentally mismatches them. Both are named Rose and Sadie, after Mr. Ratliff overhears Mr. Shelton'ssuggestion for naming the babies, and they go back to their lives.Fast forward to the 1980's, and things are very different. Sadie Shelton isnow the CEO of Moramax, and also a snarling, headstrong beast. Rose, however, is a dippy, scatterbrained woman, who somehow has become the seniorvice president. Apparently even the window cleaner knows more about thecompany than she does. Sadie has plans to liquidate the Hollowmade FurnitureCompany back in Jupiter Hollow, and put many of its inhabitants out of work.Back down South, the Ratliff sisters are shockingly different. Rose is ano-nonsense, spunky woman who plans to travel up to New York to try and stopMoramax from offloading Hollowmade, but she has little support from sisterSadie. She's a dreamer, who hates her life in Hicksville and longs to becomea part of New York's glitzy lifestyle. Upon hearing that Rose is travellingup north, she immediately agrees to go with her, but only if she can liveout her dreams first. With that, they're off, but many obstacles stand intheir path.Rose's slow but well-meaning fiance Roone is furious that she has travelledto New York, and quits his miniature golf tournament to go after her. Thegirls finally get to New York and stay at the plush Plaza Hotel, but theother set of twins are also guests. The men that desire them soon findthemselves in all sorts of confusion when they encounter them, lookingbaffled as to what is going on. Sadie's sycophantic colleagues Graham andChuck are also on a wild goose chase, desperately trying to find theRatliff's after receiving one of Rose's letters, promising to "raise somehell" concerning the deal. Things look headed towards chaos, but willmatters be resolved in time before its too late?Big Business is a prime example of those fluffy, crazy and highly enjoyablecomedies from the '80's that just don't seem to be made anymore. Maybe itwas just a time where much laughter could be wrought from such adelightfully decadent decade. This film holds all the qualities of that era;big hair, ruthless business deals, and everything in excess. These factorsadd up to its success. You can sit back and let it all wash over you, evenif it is both cheesy and fabulous at the same time. The scene where RoseShelton manages to lose her shoulder pad down her sleeve as she is trying tomake a valid point is proof enough that you're in laughter territory. Thestory is, of course, ridiculous, but that doesn't really matter once you'vegot into it. It's all about the visual gags, like when one Sadie is walkinginto a room whilst the other Sadie is walking out. It may not sound likemuch, but it is funny. Much of the film's hilarity is thanks to theexcellent performances by both Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin. Since they areplaying two characters each that are totally different from one another, youcan appreciate what fine actresses they are. Yes, their styles are anacquired taste, but once you see this, you'll be hooked. Midler vamps it upperfectly as Sadie Shelton, whilst her portrayal of Sadie Ratliff is sweetand heartfelt. Tomlin is equally good, and arguably providing more laughsthan Midler. Rose Shelton is adorable, losing dogs in elevators and snackinglike there's no tomorrow, whilst Rose Ratliff has some of the funniestone-liners in the whole film. The only drawback I could find was thesupporting cast, who come across as unnecessary clutter. Fred Ward doesbecome more annoying with each scene he appears in as Roone; Michele Placidois achingly unconvincing as an Italian Stallion, whilst Edward Herrmann andDaniel Gerroll are the most laughable and asexual gay couple I have everseen on screen. That matter aside, Big Business is brilliant. It isn't thereto make you think, it's the perfect solution for when you're bored and wantto watch some snazzy silliness. Midler and Tomlin are an inspired pairing, and it won't fail to make you laugh. One to remember.

Lighthearted Entertainment

This film for me has always been a guaranteed laugh. The southern accents and snooty New York attitude superbly played are hilarious! Bette Midler and Lilly Tomlin now how can you come up with a better duo other than double it.

super fun chick flick!

This review is from: Big Business (DVD) It is so much fun to watch these two virtuoso comediennes bounce off each other; and the double identities make it doubly fun. I especially love the contrast between Bette Midler's two characters -- the New York company exec has some truly memorable zingers. The men they all end up with are great too, though I see fireworks down the line for some of them!

If you enjoy a good laugh...

...watch this movie! Two newborn sets of identical twins are mixed up at the hospital - onepairfrom a rich family from New York, the other pair from a poor family offarmers from a small town called Jupiter Hollow. Raised in very differentsociety classes, 30 years later they're coincidentally about to crosspaths,as they're all staying at the Plaza Hotel in New York..This is probably the most amusing movie I've ever seen - lots of funnyremarks, scenes and situations - and Bette Midler is playing the role asthehotheaded Sadie (well, the two Sadies..) sooo good! One of those moviesyoucan watch again and again!

Hilarious

I thought this movie was hilarious. I have four children and we allwatchedthis movie over and over. Bette Midler and Lillie Tomlin were greatespecially in the bathroom scene when they first discovered each other.Thevarious boyfriends and husbands were also very funny. The scenes with thedoorman also added a little extra amusement to the movie. We also enjoyedBette Midler in Beaches a great deal even though this movie has a sad partto it.

a hilarious comedy - finally on DVD!

This review is from: Big Business (DVD) "BIG BUSINESS" is one of the greatest comedies ever made. Boasting full-tilt performances by comic geniuses Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler, it is a fantastic film. The story concerns two sets of twins who were mixed up at birth; the city super-rich Sadie and Rose Shelton, and Jupiter Hollow country folk Sadie and Rose Ratliff. When the Shelton's company Moramax decides to stripmine Jupiter Hollow, the two Ratliff twins journey to New York in order to attend the annual stockholder's meeting and kick up a big fuss. All the action takes place at the world-famous Plaza Hotel; the film is a delightful throwback to the screwball comedies of the 30's with the opening and shutting of doors, etc). The cast includes Edward Herrmann, Mary Gross and Fred Ward in fine supporting roles, though the spotlight is always on Lily (Rose Shelton and Rose Ratliff) and Bette (Sadie Shelton and Sadie Ratliff). Two thumbs up!The DVD includes a trailer for "Spy Hard". (Single-layer, single-sided disc).

Bette Shines

Bette Midler, queen of the live show, does not shine as much in moviecomedies (although she's outstanding in dramas). Maybe she doesn'tthrivewith a set script with multiple retakes or with interactions with othercomedians, I don't know, but she hits her movie comedy stride in BigBusiness. Maybe she's allowed to be herself more than in otherdisappointing attempts. If this is not an outstanding comedy, it isfunnyall the way through, with the "bathroom" scene a classic. If you likeBetteMidler, see this movie, now out on DVD.

Simple and predictable, but entertaining.

The plot: two women have twins the same day and their babies areinterchanged.Simple but entertaining. If you have watched other "twins separated atbirht" type of movies there is not much new in this movie.I found it to be entertaining mostly because of the contrast shown betweenthe non twins raised together and the simmilarities of the twins even afterhaving been raised apart.

"Not the most realistic, but certainly energetic, loud!!"

Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin save this sorry plot! They make it great! I love this movie!

Big Business is a must for any Midler/Tomlin fan

The script. The Direction. The camp performance from both Tomlin &Midler is pure genius. Every inch of this film is delectable. Very fewfilms are made like this anymore, and this was one of the last of the'80s of this genre - where the script and the direction was paramount. It's as fresh as when it was first released. Midler manages to be threecharacter in this film, the City Saide, the Country Sadie, and then theCountry Sadie pretending to be the City Sadie! Tomlin is subtle butwonderful as the neurotic City Rose and the feisty Country Rose, and isable to balance the act with panache. The dialogue is wonderful, and atevery point of the film you think the characters are going to be caughtout - the dialogue saves it for another time. You start rooting for thegirls not to get caught, then realise, they're not doing anythingwrong! It's Fate twisting itself in a knot the whole time.

comedic case of mistaken identities

I remember watching this as a young kid with my mother. I was surprised when this was released on DVD and bought myself a copy.*Big Business* still cracked me up. Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin both play a set of twins. At a small hospital in a small town, Jupiter Hollow, a visiting rich couple give birth to twin girls. At the same time, a local poor couple give birth to twin girls. However, an overwhelmed nurse misplaces one girl with another girl in their cribs.Fast-forward to their adulthood...the rich twin girls take over their father's company. Rich Sadie (Midler) wants to cut her losses and sell Jupiter Hollow. Rich Rose (Tomlin) is just not into this whole corporate world and just simply follows what Sadie wants. Meanwhile, Poor Rose wants to go to New York and give them a piece of her mind about this whole shebang. Poor Sadie just wants to taste the city life of NYC.Pretty soon, they'll meet and have a moment they'll never forget.*Big Business* is hilarious, especially with Rich Rose's obsession with pastries. Tomlin just cracks me up.A classic, indeed!
