Beastly plays as an apologia for bad boys and the saintly girls who find them irresistible.

Better than expected

Beastly really surprised me. its witty comments come just at the righttime. the makeup artistry in Beastly was beyond what was expected. thesoundtrack was enjoyable and smooth running throughout the film. AlexPettyfer's (kyle) acting was an improvement. i didn't have much of agood outlook on his acting career until this movie but he showed he canconvey more emotions than "im running for my life" and "teenagers findme sexy" and i think a lot of that had to do with the makeup. NeilPatrick Harris really moved the film into its comedic moments, Lisa GayHamilton also an untapped talent she really puts a lot of emotion intoher small talking parts in the movie. all in all this movie exceeded myevery expectation in design, characters, makeup and music. its worthseeing if you go to the theater or rent it at home.

How ridiculous, corny, and obvious is all this?

Beauty and the Beastly.

'BEASTLY': Two Stars (Out of Five) Modern day hip youth retelling of the 'Beauty and the Beast' fable. Ittells the story of a self obsessed high school prettyboy who is cursedby a witch into being scarred and physically 'unattractive' until hecan find true love. It stars Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer asbeauty and the 'beastly'. It's written and directed by Daniel Barnz andadapted from a novel of the same name by Alex Flinn. The film scratchesthe surface on some universal themes about general human relations butfails to explore them any further than the surface regions. Like thelead character in the movie the film is pretty light weight andsuperficial.Pettyfer plays Kyle, the son of a wealthy news anchor named RobKingston (Peter Krause). He's always been obsessed with looks andhimself like his father taught him 'beautiful people have it the best'.After playing a prank on a fellow classmate (Mary-Kate Olson) andhumiliating her, for being unattractive, he's cursed by the studentinto being 'as ugly as he is on the inside on the outside' until he canfind someone to love him and state it. Now a 'scarred monster' he dropsout of school and is home schooled by a blind private tooter (NeilPatrick Haris) his dad hires for him. He's shut away from society at aprivate condo where his dad initially agrees to stay with him until heeventually neglects him there permanently. Kyle then finds interest ina beautiful former classmate named Lindy (Hudgens) who he used toignore and make fun of in his old days (despite her obvious goodlooks). He begins stalking her and gets it in his head that she's theonly person that can cure him of his curse. The movie has some somewhat interesting conversations about the natureof our looks obsessed society and how it plays a dramatic effect onpeople's lives early on in the film but then quickly turns into aroutine teen romdram (romantic drama). The film is supposed to be anargument against superficiality but ultimately succumbs to it (like somany before it). Olsen plays the 'unattractive' student when it'sobvious to almost everyone that she wouldn't still be a celebrity ifshe wasn't considered the complete opposite by most. The monster Kylebecomes is still perfectly physically fit and his scars and tattoosmake him look more tough and cool than 'unattractive', maybe he's not aprettyboy anymore but he's hardly 'unattractive'. If they really wantedto make him 'unattractive' they would have given him a big forehead andnose. Kyle also learns nothing by falling for the most beautifuloutcast high school reject any school has seen. If the film reallywanted to send a message about looking beyond outer beauty they wouldhave had him fall in love with a plain and or physically out of shapegirl. Pettyfer and Hudgens also give two of the worst leadingperformances I've seen in any recent film and the directing and writingis just plain bad. Despite it's apparently good-hearted efforts thefilm falls flat on it's face.Watch our review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd0S1srQ9T8

Music Video Cuts

"Beastly", another of these awful music-video drunk movies is ahypocritical flop, with a mis-mash of awful melodramatic dialog andgreat looking young actors in great looking backgrounds. Beyond adoubt, after getting pummeled with no less than 2 dozen snazzysoundtrack cuts littering this movie like a garbage-dump, Beastly washeavenly to turn off once the end-credits rolled. Is there anythingredeeming here? Well everybody looks good, but the message of the storyis contradicted and hypocritical to the look and framing of the movie. For Beastly, style trumps substance, as it's not how one looks on theoutside it's the inside that counts. Too bad the movie was hung up onit's own style, look, and music cuts to right the ship, and our earswere hurting by the end of this turkey. Ruining a movie with sceneafter scene of putzy music videos unfortunately seems more popular thannot in movies these days, a lazy out for directors, and a disturbingtrend. Give Beastly a miss.

Bad Movie

There is very many words to describe this movie, all of them are synonyms for the word bad. I feel bad for the actors, because this probably pushed them down in there career. You have to wonder if the actors even tried though in some scenes... I know the writing was what made this movie bad, but the acting was throwing salt on the wound, and then squirting lemon juice on it too. All in all this might be one of the worst movies of the century.

Read the Book, Don't See the Movie

I was so excited to see this movie after hearing about it. I loved thebook and was extremely excited for the movie. That movie was so farfrom the book they could have renamed it. The movie had strongcharacters but a weak plot and barely any climax. Compared to the book, that was a complete butchering of the story. They cut out someextremely important events within the book. The ending was completelyruined. It was supposed to be full of suspense and adventure, excitement and nerve. The movies ending was dull and pointless. It wascompletely changed from the events that happened to the location of theevents. THE NAMES IN THE MOVIE WEREN'T EVEN RIGHT!! I was disappointed.Basing it an a movie stand point, and not compared to the book, it wasokay. Boring and cute. A basic romance. Nothing to special. Definitelynot something I would see again. I was extremely disappointed with thismovie. I would have thought it would have been better since theypostponed the release date for half a year. If you ask me, wait for theDVD and don't waste your money.

Mediocre, at best.

I wasn't planning on seeing this movie, but after a group ofgirlfriends convinced me it would be a good chick flick, I caved.Going into this movie, I haven't read the book, just seen the Disneymovie quite a few times. I was expecting this tragic love story, justlike the original movie, with plenty of tear-jerking moments, but itjust wasn't there, in terms of script and acting. The plot was rushed, and therefore the audience didn't have enough timeto appreciate the story line, even though we all know it like the backof our hands. Our Beast, Kyle, was more of a brat than a beast, and even aftertransforming, I was expecting this monster of rage, and he just whinedand moaned and was more comedic than anything else.Lindy, who was our Beauty, really only stood as a placeholder for agorgeous woman. Vanessa Hudgens is a gorgeous girl, but that's reallyall she is. Her acting is very flat, with one moment standing out inparticular. She's just been told some devastating news over the phonein a conversation that lasts all of 10 seconds. Acting 101: Acting isthe reality of doing, she just pretended, and there's no two ways aboutit. I didn't see a role model to young girls in her, I just saw apretty face. However, there were some exceptions, Neil Patrick Harris was impeccablewith his comedic timing, and really saved this movie from otherwisegetting a 1 star. Mary Kate Olsen also pleasantly surprised me, as shewas good at convincing me she was this evil enchantress. However, forher entire time in the movie, she looks like a haute couture modelrather than this disgusting ugly creature.Overall, it's not terrible, just not that good. Neil Patrick Harris isreason enough alone to see this movie, and to get a look into what someconsider "21st Century Beauty and the Beast."

My Perspective on Beastly

The concept of this story is brilliant, it's a shame the director failed to pull it off. Every great movie has at least one actor pulling us out of our seats and into the story. It was like watching a series of scenes like clips, it didn't flow. A two dimensional feel with depth. The set can sometimes be too sterile when filming and the chemistry between actors never reaches it's connection, maybe that was it. What ever occurred during production, nobody should have heard the words that's a wrap. The story deserves a remake because it addresses a flaw in human nature that rarely penetrates our fear of being rejected. Beastly is another Beauty and the Beast story having a different twist.

alex is back!

great pic of alex pettyfer in 'popstar' mag. other than that, nothing much has been mentioned about the summer release.alex was in 'tom brown's school days' and 'alex rider: operation stormbreaker'. they were hoping for a full series of movies based on the books, but 'rider' bombed at the box office.alex did a great job in both movies, esp. 'rider'. it is good to see him back and working. i hope he gets the recognition he deserves, even if it is only becuz of people wanting too see vanessa hudgens at the movies. the added bonus of neil patrick harris, might bring in the adults as well, making it a family movie nite.the story is 'beauty and beast' told from the beast's point of view, which hasn't been done before. alex spent 4 and half hours in make-up (and 1 and half getting it off) every day. but i hope we get to see a lot of him as he is as well. he has certainly worked hard in everything he has done. (martial arts and stunts in 'rider'.) he deserves a break.

Beastly doesn't quite cover it. Not even monstrous, gruesome or grotesque come close.

A Nutshell Review: Beastly

Fairy tales are getting a modern day makeover, with Catherine Hardwickesexing up Red Riding Hood with a Gothic treatment, and Cannes nowgetting all hot and heavy with Julia Leigh's Sleeping Beauty, which isgetting a number of negative press for being much ado about nothingsave for plenty of nudity. Beauty and the Beast gets the teenageromance treatment that stays in perfectly PG territory that deals withthe superficiality of vanity and good looks, with the usual reminderthat beauty comes from within and is more than just skin deep. Highlypredictable, with hot leads of the moment in lead roles to carry thisfilm through.Based upon the novel by Alex Flinn, Daniel Barnz directs and writes thescreenplay for what is firmly a tale for the teenage demographic, casting Alex Pettyfer, best known to date for his portrayal of John inI Am Number Four earlier this year, as the rich kid Kyle, introduced asan A-One jerk running for presidency of some green club that he hasabsolutely no concerns for, only to boost his CV and banging on hismean streak, arrogance, money and good looks to canvass for votes. Heinsults the weird dresser Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen), who turns out to bea witch that hexes him with a curse, turning him into a hideouslylooking bald guy complete with ugly scars and tattoos, that he becomesa walking freak show spurned by his dad (Peter Krause) even. But with money comes the solution to a lot of things, such as buying apenthouse away from the city to house Kyle away from public scrutiny, with Ducati bikes and limos at his beck and call for use. If there's asingle takeaway from the film, it is that money talks and solvesproblems, from hiring of a blind tutor (Neil Patrick Harris) to impartlife values and to crack a joke or two, to that of a housekeeper Zola(Lisa Gay Hamilton) who sees the beauty beneath the extremely uglyfacade put up by Kyle. The both of them form the nucleus of the newbeastly household supporting Kyle in his quest to break the curse setupon him. Before the curse gets permanently set in 12 months time, Kyle has toseek out true love in order to be rid of it, and to get the person tosay those 3 sacred words. With absolutely no social graces or skills totalk about since everything about the teenager is money andmanipulation through his appearance, he finds it terribly hard to tryand connect with others, obliterating his past smug life, until hehatches a plan to try and seduce Lindy, played by Vanessa Hudgens, tomake that goody two shoes fall in love with him, or at least that's howdirector Daniel Barnz made it seem like. You know you'd come to expecttrue love that will eventually take over, but somehow that rang quitehokey and convenient, since Alex Pettyfer made it seem like he's reallythe master manipulator, scheming and planning for sparks to fly andchemistry to be exploited in order to work toward Kyle's selfishobjectives. So the redemption didn't actually feel sincere, and that's why thisfilm failed in its wanting to tell a moral story that all that mattersis the beauty in one's heart and intention. After all, the Beast heredid quite the unthinkable, in blackmailing Lindy's dad to send Lindyinto his abode in order to stay safe since she's wanted by some thug, and of course to fall into his plan of slowly romancing the lass inorder to be rid of his hex. Surprisingly though the household's tutorand housekeeper encourages and assists him in this dastardly plan, eventhough you're supposed to imagine that they see beyond his cruel facadeinto that heart of cold, which is quite a stretch in this story ofconvenience (such as having no other suitors readily available),especially in the final act.Vanessa Hudgens ditches her recent bad girl turn in Sucker Punch forsomething a little more Disney-like, that damsel who is in distresscrying out for someone to sweep her off her feet and the burden oflooking after a drug junkie dad. It's a pretty lightweight Belleequivalent she plays here with little depth in her Lindy being quiteimpressed with the highly engineered efforts to woo her, hopeful thather crush on the biggest jerk in school would turn into something moremeaningful, and possessing that requisite heart of gold. It's a little ironic that a film that seeks to speak up againstsuperficiality and vanity, would be nothing more than that what itwanted to speak up against. Not the strongest nor sharpest Beauty andthe Beast retelling out there.

Surprisingly okay

Well, there I was at the theatre with two friends, flipping a coin todecide whether we would be seeing 'The Adjustment Bureau' or 'Beastly'and, as you may have guessed by now, 'Beastly' won. Begrudgingly, Iwent into the cinema with very low expectations.I think the fact that I went in not expecting anything very good madethe movie better for me. I didn't go in wanting to see the book adaptedon the big screen (I hadn't even known of its existence until a fewdays ago) and I was fully committed to making fun of the film when thetime called for it. I went in expecting anything from just plain bad toa cheesy, sometimes sweet and all-around okay movie. And the all-aroundokay is exactly what I got. Not good, not bad but so okay it's average. The plot is a fairly simple one: It's beauty and the beast. Just in NewYork and with teenagers. Basically, our hero is Kyle, played by AlexPettyfer, a snobbish and shallow teenage boy who lives with his equallyshallow and snobbish father. Kyle is transformed into a 'beast' by awitch called Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen) after publicly embarrassing her,but not before he meets his love interest Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens). Therest one can easily figure out by knowing the original 'Beauty and theBeast' tale.I'm going to say it now that you're probably not going to getemotionally attached to the characters. The script moves in a rushedway that detracts from the film and story. You're not going in for anamazing, mind-blowing script or anything, so I guess it doesn't reallymatter too much. In addition, the characters are underdeveloped andsort of flat, and the acting can only be called mediocre by moststandards. (Except for, of course, Neil Patrick Harris, whom should berenamed 'Scene Stealer: The Man'.) Where the film does shine, however,is with the make-up. Making Alex Pettyfer, a model, look, well, notunattractive but not everyone's cup of tea is neat. Every cut on hisface looked real, all the tattoos that seemed to literally pop out ofhis skin looked painfully realistic and, generally, the transformationwas interesting to see. I, for one, really liked the make-up and, dareI say it, I think that the make-up people will get some nods when thetime comes. However, I can say in all honestly that I really, really did not likethe editing. It looked like an amateur's work in Sony Vegas Six and itwas quite bothersome to me. Films don't need flashy effects to makethem better. The film also has some really good tunes playing throughout scenes. Themusic did fit the story well. So, should you see this movie? Well, that all depends. If you're likeme and you were not-exactly-forced to see it, but you were broughtalong with some friends, then you might find it surprisingly sort offun and, well, cute. If you're going in for serious movie-goingexperience, yeah, don't waste your money on it.

Done Before and better

This movie is the same old story which has been made into countlessmovies. We have a person who is a obsessed by his good looks andtherefore of course will be punished and will not become his old selfuntil he has gone through some trials that will teach him that beautycomes from within and not based on the outside. We all know that in thereal world this is not the case and it's a fairy-tale.Going into the movie i did not have high hopes and i must admit i wassurprised not because the movie is that good, but because it's not thatbad either, the story has been done 100 times and has been done betterthan this but something about the main actors makes you feel pleasantlyentertained and if you have 1½ hour which have to be spent on somethingthis movie is not the worst thing to throw on the DVD.Just don't expect to be wowed or see anything new and anything thathasn 't been done before. Therefore i cannot in good will give it more than a 2.

Wonderful !

My 14 year old daughter and I both love this movie. It is nice to see someone realize they are not stuff and above others because of money and beauty. Beauty is as Beauty does.

Beautiful teen romance

Beastly was a movie that transported me for the time I watched it. It'sabout Kyle, who is way too into his looks. When he disses the wronggirl, she turns him into a beast. He has a year to find someone wholoves, truly loves, him to get his old looks back.Okay, so you probably know this. It's Beauty and the Beast.I liked the movie because I really related to the characters. AlexPettyfer as Kyle and Vanessa Hudgens as Lindy (the "beauty" of thestory) had excellent chemistry, and I was always rooting for them toget together. The thing about romances is, you usually know how it'sgoing to turn out. Unless it's Nicholas Sparks, the two leads are goingto get together and live happily ever after. However, I have to saythat there have been a lot of recent movies (for example Leap Year orLetters to Juliet) where I've seriously wondered whether that's reallya good idea. The two leads just didn't seem to belong together. Thiswasn't the case here. I genuinely liked the two characters together andI (along with many people in my theater) actually sighed when there wasa setback. This movie was also really beautifully filmed. From the roses in Kyle'sgreenhouse to the Manhattan skyline Kyle and Lindy gaze at to Mary-KateOlsen's costumes, there was always something to see.Performances by the supporting cast, including Mary-Kate Olsen, NeilPatrick Harris, and Peter Krause were also excellent, and NPH inparticular provided some great humorous moments. No, this movie probably won't appeal to grown men, but for people wholike romance in general, this was, overall, a really enjoyable movie!

Wasn't as good as the trailer showed it to be

To say it was good is really if you are seriously young or if you arein to those sappy movies where they have a happy ending. I thought thismovie was going to be good but to my disappointing it really wasn't itwas to some extent like beauty and the beat other then the fact therewas no real look into the story. It was very quickly moving on so thatyou couldn't really get into the movie which was a shame really for amovie that looked so good but I guess you can judge a film by itstrailer. The acting was OK but was very serious and not that romantic.I wouldn't really suggest going to see it unless you want to see aromantic film with no action or real story to it. The only real good bit is learning how real the dad only likes his son( Alex) when he's handsome and will do anything to get him beautifulagain which made feel quite sad that's how the dad see's him.The beast really didn't look much like a beast almost like some onewith lots of tattoos also he still had a six pack so it made him lookeven less ugly.So I wouldn't see this movie unless you in there with a child or wantto watch some boring romantic film.

Melanie 2012-04-27 10:21:00

Not So Bad

I was surprised at Vanessa Hudgins' performance. It was better than expected. Also, Mary Kate Olson (or was it the other one) was suprisingly good as the witch. Neil Patrick Harris was hilarious. The movie moved slowly at some points, and the dialogue got a little corny. But the movie had some endearing moments, and the characters were believable. Overall a pretty good, harmless, teenagery flick. Not a total waste of my money and not a bad modern take on a classic story.

Rafer Guzman 2012-04-26 12:35:32

Beneath it all, however, is a movie with a good heart.
