Balls of Fury

In the unsanctioned, underground, and unhinged world of extreme Ping-Pong, the competition is brutal and the stakes are deadly. Down-and-out former professional Ping-Pong phenom Randy Daytona is sucked into this maelstrom when FBI Agent Rodriguez recruits him for a secret mission. Randy is determined to bounce back and recapture his former glory, and to smoke out his fathers killer - one of the FBIs Most Wanted, arch-fiend Feng. But, after two decades out of the game, Randy cant turn his life around and avenge his fathers murder without a team of his own. He calls upon the spiritual guidance of blind Ping-Pong sage and restaurateur Wong, and the training expertise of Master Wongs wildly sexy niece Maggie, both of whom also have a dark history with Feng. All roads lead to Fengs mysterious jungle compound and the most unique Ping-Pong tournaments ever staged. There, Randy faces such formidable players as his long-ago Olympics opponent, the still-vicious Karl Wolfschtagg. Can Randy keep his eye on the ball? Will he achieve the redemption he craves while wielding a paddle? Is his backhand strong enough to triumph over rampant wickedness?

Failure Of Comedy

I don;t even want to explain what this is about, it's just not worth me saying anything more then you should avoid having to sit through this movie. It's jokes are lame, it's humor is dull and it's plot is a seen-it-before 100 times scenario. The pacing is too fast, the ... euhh, sigh... take my word on it, avoid it.

Ridiculously funny

"Ping pong is not Macarena, it takes time and patience to learn". If you can appreciate the comic genius of this sentence, pronounced by your typical old and blind martial arts asian master you 're gonna like this ridiculously funny movie. If you can like what comes next ".. in fact it 's a like an old prostitute.. it takes years to master all her tricks.. and she keeps laughing at your mistakes.. but you still cannot help coming back to her and why.. oh why... well because it's the only one cheap enough that you can afford!" well then you 're actually going to love this movie :)It's kind of an hybrid between a parody and an homage to various martial arts movies, and what I especially like about it is that it's "overcharged".. I mean.. the jokes and funny moments are just gratuitously jumping one over the other giving that exceptional "overwhelming fun" sensation that you can also find in the "Naked Gun" series. Warning: not for people who take movies, life and themselves too seriously...

miss it at all costs

This one is the one to miss folks. Not even the great one himself (Christopher Walken) could save thisone. The lead character is at best painful to watch. Maggie Q was theonly reason for me staying through the show. Stunning woman thatMaggie. George Lopez, leave this OFF your resume there George. And forJason Scott Lee to be in this show is reason enough for someintervention and immediate rehab! Get some help Jason!! I rememberlaughing once during the movie. Don't remember which part either. Sadsad sad. Previews are silly yes, but the movie isn't. Shhhhhocking!Anyhow ladies and gents I am only writing more on this subject due tonot using enough lines and comments. Thank you IMDb. Now we must allbare the burden of reading the rantings of someone who went to thismovie on his only day off this week and kiss $4.50 good bye. Not tomention an hour and a half I'll never get back. And who are these otherpeople who did the other reviews that thought this eyeball burner was"hilarious"? Must be the director or producer. And if it takes 3 filmcompanies to produce a movie, man you're in for a rough ride already.Hope I now used enough space so I can submit. Take care all.

Giggles And Chuckles

HAHAHAHA. This movie was so funny it made my "balls" hurt...That's the kind of humor I was expecting on my way into the movietheatre. And to my surprise, the humor was much cleaner for the mostpart. And not just clean, but somewhat humorous. Not a bad movie forsomeone who's just looking for laughs. If you're seeking the comedy ofthe year, seek elsewhere, but overall I think this movie was a pleasantsurprise. At the very least it exceeded it's mediocre expectations. Notto mention it was satisfying to see people like stand-up comedianGeorge Lopez, and established movie veteran Christopher Walken. This isby no means a "must-see" movie, but if you have some down time, itwould hurt your "balls" to watch this movie.

"Balls" Without Bounce

"Balls of Fury" is founded on a clever idea; take all the clichés frommartial arts b-movies and apply them to ping pong. Unfortunately, thisflick doesn't deliver on its promising premise. The problem is mainlylead actor Dan Fogler. His timing is off and he has no appeal at all. He's bland and brings no life to the screen at all. It's too bad that the director couldn't get Jack Black for the lead. The role seemed written for him and it would have been interesting tosee him play opposite Christopher Walken. As things turned out, Foglerseems to disappear each time he's on screen with Walken. In fact, theonly thing that saves this film at all is Walken who proves once againthat he can do comedy. He's a natural; his timing is terrific and hemakes nearly everything he says worth a giggle or two in "Balls."Without him, there wouldn't be much to write about this movie at all. When all is said and done, there isn't much point to plunking down $10to see this in the theater. It's worth seeing for Walken, but probablybetter left for when it gets released on video.

more misses than hits in the laughs department

The humor is broad and predictably predictable in "Balls of Fury," alow-grade, though admittedly good-natured, sports farce that elicitsroughly one laugh for every five attempts at being funny (not a badration, I suppose, but not really high enough to make the movie worthseeing). The plot, which is barely worth detailing here, involves ahas-been table tennis champion (Dan Fogler) hired by the F.B.I. toinfiltrate a ping pong tournament (a literal "death match") beinghosted by a notorious underworld kingpin (played to the hilt by the oneand only Christopher Walken). George Lopez, James Hong, and DiedrichBader ("The Drew Carey Show") round out the likable cast.Despite a handful of laugh-out-loud moments and an air of genuinesweetness, there's no compelling reason to recommend "Balls of Fury,"aside from Walken's campy performance, that is. My advice, therefore, would be to skip "Balls of Fury" altogether and re-watch "Airplane" or"Naked Gun" instead.

Balls of fury!

It is not that bad. I am one of the guys who like this. It is not badcomparing to the movies that were recently released in Singapore.Underdog is not very good, can't even be a superhero movie. Shoot em'up is for hard-core action fans and basically is very violent andbloody. Then it is Balls of fury which I enjoyed watching. I thought itwas something like Prince of tennis, the live-action movie and theping-pong ball fights scenes are something like that. That, theping-pong ball fights, is the thing that attracted me to watch it. ButPrince of tennis is better than this. Balls of fury got the comedy andthe simple action which becomes a harmless fun movie. I like movies aslong as they are fun or entertaining. Balls of fury, though fun, isconsidered quite dumb for some mature adults or teenagers, the directorused stupid jokes like always get hit in the groin and banging into thewall. It has to be stupid to be funny. Sometimes, I admit that it isquite dumb in some of the scenes but it is fun, it got slow-motion ballfights, it got Maggie Q who is hot and it got dumb-a** jokes so whatmore you want for a dumb comedy.Overall, it makes a harmless movie that you can watch in your freetime. It can be funny sometime and it too can be dumb sometime. You maylaugh or smile at some scenes. I don't know but I smiled when watchingit even at the stupidest jokes. Best to leave your brains at home whilewatching. This movie is not to be taken seriously.

Ping Pong... or as the Chinese call it... Ping Pong.

A SPORT OF EMPERORS AND BANDITS ALIKE, PING PONG. Balls of Fury is a movie directed by Robert Ben Garant, starring Dan Fogler, Christopher Walken, and Maggie Q. In the tradition of such movies as Epic Movie and Scary Movie comes the outrageous comedy Balls of Fury. Balls of Fury focuses the viewer's attention to the underground world of ping pong, where "fortunes are won, and lost". The movie has very simple slapstick comedic taste and will keep the viewer laughing constantly. I personally enjoyed the comedy of the movie, but in truth much of the comedy used in the movie was not original. For example, there are scenes in the movie where FBI Agent Rodriguez (George Lopez) imitates Al Pacino Scarface. Also, it is seen that Rodriguez is an aspiring James Bond 007 sort of agent. Balls of Fury has very few flaws, and no plot holes, and the line-up of actors chosen for this film is simply amazing. I recommend this movie to anybody that enjoys slapstick like humor, and is hoping for a good laugh.

Funnier than an Englishman trying to make wine!

This film is very funny. Don't watch it if you thought Dirty Dancingwas great. You obviously have no sense of humour or reality! It'sfunny, funny, funny! Even if I could watch George Bush being run overby a Hummer, I'd still choose to watch this!!!!Christopher Walken is particularly good. We loved the joke about Elton John. The lead guy is brilliant. Just fat, sweaty, and lame enough for thefilm. We watch a lot of films and we really enjoyed this one. Thanks to the actors, producers and director for making this one, it'sa laugh a minute.

Fbi Triads and ping pong what more could u want

anyone who says they don't like this film doesn't have a sense ofhumour, this film is fantastic and nice to see someone new in the leadrole, Dan fogler is a great comedy actor and I'm sure we will be seeinga lot more of him in the future. James hong is brilliant in this filmas well as the super hot Maggie q. so if u don't take films toseriously and u want a good laugh at a great film buy this but if u areone of those people who is very sad and lives just to criticise theslightest plot hole or watches for the slightest mistake {which thereseem to be a lot of on here)don't bother. FBI TRIADS AND PING PONGBRILLIANT !!!!!!!

Gordon-11 2012-05-07 07:19:35

A really lousy film

This film is about a disgraced child prodigy recruited by the FBI toplay ping pong ball in order to smash a triad society.I expected cheap and brain off entertainment, but wow, this movie islousy beyond my expectations. The plot is contrived, inconsistent andridiculous. The master is supposed not to have foreigner students, andguess what? Christopher Walken is a foreigner! The electrical suitslook more like a kid's toy, but that's better than the panda whichlooks exactly like a toy. Execution of the plot is no good either.Camera work is bad, even for a comedy. Character development is nonexistent. How come Maggie Wong falls for Randy Daytona all of a sudden? There are lots of homophobic jokes in the film, but at the same timethere are loads of half naked buys running around in shorts! It makesme wonder whether the homophobic jokes are thrown in so that they canput hot semi-naked guys in the film. How come Christopher Walken agreedto star in this film? he just lost all his credibility! Believe me,this film is bad.

Funny enough

I saw this when it was released and then recently bought it and watched it again and was not disappointed either time. It moves fast, has some funny moments, is over-the-top at all times, and is silly, juvenile, and predictable. But, I liked it. It's a movie you just watch for fun, not to criticize. Believe me, there are far more mega-hyped movies that have come out over the last ten years or so that were no better. The last two Austin Powers movies, Blades of Glory, pretty much anything with Jim Carrey post-Liar, Liar, and the majority of Jack Black and Ben Stiller offerings. This received a fair amount less pimping and was just as funny. Many have compared Daniel Folger to Jack Black and I don't get it. Why? Because they're both big guys? Black is Robin Williams subtle, Folger plays it a bit more low key and it works much better in this role. George Lopez won't make you forget Marlon Brando, but so what? The movie is funny, quick moving, and is a good way to spend a little time in front of the idiot box. It isn't called that for nothing, you know.

Not worth the money or time... quite sad really...

What bugs me is how people are talking about how funny this is, and itsjust encouraging the producers and film companies to continue makinggarbage like this (i.e. the Scary Movie franchise with its 'Epic' &'Date' movie spin-offs.) I went to this movie not expecting a wholelot, and same with my buddy. Its not so much that I cant get my moneyback for my ticket, its that I cant get the 1h 45 minutes back that waswasted from my life. This movie was and is easily the worst movie I have ever seen.*And its sad that not even the great Chris Walken could save a disasterlike this.If any of you are contemplating and seeing this, I strongly suggest youto not waste your time. Im not one take in the perspective of otherpeoples opinions, but please... trust me on this one... I have seen alot of movies, and this one isn't even worth downloading.

Funny - if this is your cup of tea!

Comedy is hard to rate since it's so subjective. I happen to like thesilly gags and comments in this movie enough to think it was aworthwhile experience. The star, Dan Fogler (who I'm unfamiliar with) had a great innocenceand down-trodden feel about him, his dialog 'felt' genuine so it waseasy to be interested in his character. Christopher Walken played arole he's really great at: a crazy, exotic criminal. Many of his lineswere fantastically crazy - and he made them fun to hear. James Hong, the blind master/teacher also put in a great performance with somehilarious one-liners spoofing great martial-art teachers in othermovies. The movie is basically about a former child ping-pong star who isrecruited by the FBI to get close to their most wanted criminal. Thiscriminal, it turns out, is a ping-pong fanatic and hosts his owndeath-match playoff. There are some nutty plot holes, but for the most part, this movie waspretty satisfying. In addition the performances, the set designs werereally colorful and rich; they were really nice to watch. At this point in time, all you can do is watch the movie on TV. Irecommend watching the first 5 minutes. If you like the type of humoryou see, you'll probably like the whole movie. It's consistentthroughout.

Is This the Most Ridiculous Martial Arts Movie Parody Ever?

Note: I said "most ridiculous" not "best".Yeah, pretty much. The 20-minute spoof of Bruce Lee films entitled "A Fistful of Yen" from Kentucky Fried Movie, not to mention the blockbusters Kung Fu Panda and Kung Fu Panda 2, are serious (or not so serious) contenders for the prize, but there is something about doing a martial arts movie, with many of the classic martial arts movie tropes (and several of the actors), about ping-pong instead of martial arts that raises it to a whole 'nother level of insanity. In addition to a pretty clever script, the film benefits from some great performances. Christopher Walken flat out steals the movie in a performance perhaps best described as Christopher Walken doing his own Christopher Walken impression, which by the way is excellent, but no matter what lunacy he happens to be spouting at the moment, Walken plays his part completely straight. Another stellar, dead straight and relentlessly funny performance is handed in by James Hong in the classic role of the aged martial arts, uh, ping-pong master. You WILL laugh at a blind man. You won't want to, you were raised better than that, but Mr. Hong will not give up until he has you falling down, rolling on the floor. George Lopez gives a nicely understated performance as an FBI agent stuck with the assignment no one else wanted. Maggie Q is excellent in a part I only wish had been larger. Co-writer (with director Ben Garant) Thomas Lennon is nicely over the top as the demented East German champion who humiliated Randy Daytona in the Olympics and would like to do it again.Defects? Well, Dan Fogler as the every man hero, Randy Daytona, sometimes seems a bit overshadowed by all these lunatics surrounding him, but part of that is no doubt deliberate. I also thought the film would have benefited from less forced gags, which mostly succeeded but occasionally detonated or went on too long, and more straight if intentionally hilarious plot and character development. Mercifully, this 2007 film is free of the arguably unintentional racial bias that makes watching so many older American "oriental" film comedies so cringeworthy today. To be sure, ethnicity and stereotypes are relentlessly made fun of here but in an equal opportunity fashion. By the end it is safe to assume that everybody's ancestors will be ashamed and disapproving of the results,...if they aren't cracking up too much to be stern.

Insipid time waster

This movie contains one fantastically hilarious joke, a couple of chuckles, and a slew of corny sight gags and banal "wackiness". However, the humor wasn't so dreadful that I was disgusted, and I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't sink to anywhere near the depths of vulgarity that most films of this ilk plumb, so I give it 2 stars.

peterb666 2012-05-02 00:20:49

OK for a laugh - much better than expected

Balls of Fury is a fairly amusing movie. Certainly a lot better thanexpected and on a plane above the recent crop of so called spoofmovies.Christopher Walken is good enough to lift this film a bit but so muchtalent wasted - although I think as the principal villain – he couldhave been a little more over the top. Dan Fogler does OK too as doesveteran actor James Hong and game nemesis, Thomas Lennon. It is good to see that the writing, while not exactly brilliant, didn'trely on 98% smut to carry the 'humour' which seems to be the currenttrend in so called comedy movies of this type.

2012-05-01 06:55:29

Disappointing

I am so disappointed with this film. I wasn't expecting much from this flick, after all, just look at the title. I was hoping that it would at least be enjoyable, but it almost is a waste of time. This is definitely one of those movies where the best scenes are shown in the trailers. So, if you have seen the trailers, you have seen the best parts of the movie. The rest of the movie is a thing where you smile at best, there never is a bust-a-gut laughing moment. Such a sad thing to admit, because I love Christopher Walken as an actor. He is always interesting to watch, but even he is kind of dull in Balls of Fury. This is worth watcing on TV for sure when it is free, and maybe renting, but I wouldn't buy this movie. It is only worth buying if you find it dirt cheap used.

Goodbye Forrest Gump, say hello to Randy Daytona

I saw the movie at a sneak preview showing two days before the August 29 premiere. If "Reno 911" makes you laugh, then this is right up your alley. This movie is all about short laughs and awesome table tennis visual effects. If you want to see character development, don't waste your time."Forrest Gump" is from a generation separate from the current viewing audience. Whenever people think of ping pong, people will now reference this movie instead.
