Though many people think this movie is really crappy, its actually not.The comment below me said that the movie really is a piece of crap; butI find otherwise. Though it may not be a fantastic movie it does have alot of good qualities. The plot line it very interesting and the characters are portrayed verywell. Now-a-days you find a lot of actors really cannot act, but inthis film I did not find any real fake acting. The special effects arenot the most fantastic, but the movie was made in 1997. Overall ithought it was a fairly good movie, good acting, good plot, and goodscene portrayal. It was a very believable film; which I think is thebest quality a movie can have.
An above average specimen hungering for tasty morsels.
Let me begin by stating that I realized going into this movie that itwasn'tgoing to be a real think-piece: inept team of 'explorers' or 'researchers'travel down remote part of even remoter river, get harassed by deadlysnake, unintentional hilarity ensues. The main problems I have with Anaconda areasfollows: a.) How does a film with such a god-awful storyline ever getmade?;b.) why is Ice Cube in said film?; c.) come on, do I really need tocontinue? I'm almost disappointed in myself for taking time to write this, but I feel it to be my duty to prevent others from making the same mistakeIdid and losing 2 hours to this complete and utter brain-cell assassin. Ifyou, or anyone you know, ever feels compelled to go out and rent thisflick,or if it's ever on television and you think, "Oh, J. Lo's in it, it can'tbethat bad," think again. Remember Gigli? Enough said.
Anaconda is probably the most ridiculous movie I ever watched. The visualeffects are poor, and the "terrible snake" is visibly fake.Besides, the story is tired and one has to be really ignorant (not to saystupid) to believe that the Amazonian jungle is really like that (infestedwith killer bees, giant snakes and even a lost tribe). Give me abreak! To make matters even worse, the villain is absolutely incoherent, and no onecan explain why he acts like that. Besides, he seems to be as immortal asJason is.Summing up, Anaconda is only worth for its involuntary humor, due theincredible amount of nonsense it contains.
To be honest you didn't see the snake in the first 1/2 hour which made the movie slightly boring. It's about Jon Voights character - an evil guy who lets his 'mates' (Jennifer Lopez, Eric Stolotz, Ice Cube) into the world of Anacondas! I think that Jennifer Lopez did a really good job of acting and the snake looked pretty real but it needed the get to the snake quickly to make it a better movie!
After his filmic project, "The specialist", Luis Llosa bet hard with this movie that certainly lacks of central nerve in its script. A group of investigators go to the Amazon for making a documental about a tribe, but meanwhile, in the middle of a night storm they will aid to a strange (Jon Voight) who has other plans in mind. So, the film will experience a twist of fate just for showing the true proposal of this mysterious man: to capture anacondas.Special effects, and the well expected gore sequences will make the rest of this hodgepodge movie, that thanks to the presence of Voight, the alluring J. Lo and the young Owen Wilson are worthy to be watched. Entertaining, but nothing else, one of these recommended movies for a lazy afternoon.
Growing up in the 50's gave me the privilege of being one the lastgenerations of filmgoers to enjoy the Saturday afternoon double-featurematinee experience at the neighborhood theatre. These double-features wereprimarily low budget sci-fi/horror epics with slender threads of plot, lovely damsels in distress (Beverly Garland, Barbara Rush), square-jawedheroes (Peter Graves, Richard Carlson) and budget monsters from Mars, thegrave, melted icebergs, mad scientist's labs or atomic fallout. Well notreally. The monsters were usually guys in rubber suits (Creature From TheBlack Lagoon, This Island Earth), or cheap trick photography (Tarantula,Attack of the 50 Ft Woman), or `Mask and Glove' illusions (I Was A TeenageWerewolf/Frankenstein, Monster On The Campus), or, if we were really lucky,a Ray Harryhausen stop motion creation.Needless to say this wasn't great cinema, but what it WAS, was great fun. Were you scared? Not really. Did you have the need for everything to befact-based and believable? Of course not! You went to be entertained, toletyour imagination merge with the sounds and images and have a good time, laughing or screaming. Could anyone really take the monster from `ItConquered The World' seriously, or wonder whether `The Creature From TheBlack Lagoon' was biologically possible or if it could anatomicallydeflowerJulie Adams? Didn't matter. Instead, you let yourself meld into the film'sworld and travel along for the ride. Thus whether you were on the obviously and badly animated `Angry RedPlanet', or trapped with James Best on the island of dogs in make-up whichwere trying to pass for `The Killer Shrews', you surrendered to themagic. My heart weeps for the post `Star Wars' filmgoers, these people weaned onspecial effects, the MTVers and video viewers who've had their imaginationsand attention spans kidnapped and are told what to see and how to interpretit. I truly am sorry. You people missed a modern day, Grade B doublefeature, sci-fi/horror classic called `Anaconda'. And we hadn't seen onethis good since `Alien'.Being an intelligent man, I realize the futility of convincing thenon-believers who can't draw from the needed background reservoir tounderstand, so I won't bother preaching this film's virtues or try to winyou over by fact and argument. This, however, is what I willsay   This is a brilliant re-creation of the lost art of the 1950'sdouble-featurehorror genre; not really a homage to, more the real thing. It's `CreatureFrom The Black Lagoon', with a really cheesy computer animated snake inplace of a guy in a really cheesy rubber suit. It's a Saturday afternoonclassic for people who remember and understand them. Story is great, scriptis great, cinematography is great, direction is great, acting is great, thewomen beautiful and endangered, the heroes machismo and handsome, themonster phantasmagorical, and we get a bonus surprise by one of thegreatestAmerican actors, Jon Voight, doing a magnificent over-the-top, slimy, nasty, reprehensibly heartless villain, complete with a sly wink to the audience. His performance is the key to the film. He understood the film's intent andtranslated it to the screen for you. If it's in your realm of understandingand experience, you get it and are able to partake in this little slice ofcinema heaven. In 20 years, they'll be calling this a classic. I'm calling it onenow.
Except for Jon Voight's character, I didn't find any of theactors/characters in this film likable, just annoying. Voight washardly a role model, either. I wound up rooting for the anaconda. IceCube, Jonathan Hyde, Jennifer Lopez...all playing people with chips ontheir shoulders. Sorry, but rappers with attitudes or snobby Englishmenaren't entertaining to me.In here, too, is the all-too-familiar cheap shot against Christians inwhich they show the worst, most despicable person in the story and thenzoom in several times to show you the cross that sleazebag is wearing. They always want to make that association and they make it obviousevery time. What makes the movie tolerable at all is the great Brazlian swampscenery and good special effects with the giant snake. Yeah, sometimesthe snake scenes look a bit computer-generated but more than not, theyare just plain scary. A few of them are downright jaw-dropping as whenit flies through the air, swallows human beings or swims while on fire. This is nice on DVD with rich visuals and very good surround sound. If only the people in the movie were half as good as the scenery.
This form would not let me get this review on the air, so to speak, until I gave this BAD movie at least one star. DISREGARD that single star! This movie should have NO star! The people who like this movie need to get a life! ANY life! This movie is BAD. It is BAD. The acting is BAD. The script is BAD. The special effects are BAD. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE IS B-A-D. It is SO BAD it ISN'T EVEN FUNNY BAD. It's just BAD. And you know what, it is so BAD nobody should even care how BAD it is. BAD. BAD. BAD.
I had this movie for a while. This is one of the movies that I havewatched again and again. And I cannot say that for some other moviesthat have been rated much higher. I like the entertainment. I like thecharacters and the way they are played. The pressure and manipulationsused by the main character add to the plot. Watching the crew of theboat get eaten one by one, that part is done well. The film is OK forthe family to view. However, I did not care much for the ending, Ifound it boring. I also thing the ending should be a little lessviolent. Some of the characters did fit there parts well. Some times they almostseemed to be natural, not acting in a way.
This review is from: Anaconda (Amazon Instant Video) Probably the worst movie ever, I wish I had one good thing to say. Oh, younger J Lo I suppose.
I just can't get enough of Jennifer Lopez (J. Lo) as an actress, so "Anaconda" has become one of my favorite movies. I liked "Enough," but THIS movie has a giant C.G.I. snake--that's pretty tough to top.Speaking of the computer graphics, it's getting harder and harder to tell what's real and what's fake. I argued with my friend chatchi over whether or not they actually had a giant reptile swallow Owen Wilson (O. Wil)!On the subject of O. Wil, he should ditch projects like "Royal Tenenbaums" and stick to cool horror movies. Remember "the Haunting?" He was great! His sense of humor and charm set him up perfectly as "the guy you don't think will get killed, but eventually does."Jon Voight (J. Voi) commandeers this film with his comeback performance. He's really menacing as a modern-day pirate-type guy, especially with his unidentifiable accent, which lends him the perfect air of mystery. I don't want to give away such a masterful plot, but wait until you see J. Voi's surprise re-appearance later in the film!Eric Stoltz (E.Sto) is my second-favorite red-headed actor (nobody beats Danny Cooksey). It's too bad he's taken out early in the film by an aquatic wasp with the apparent ability to teleport into people's mouths. And of course, we musn't forget Ice-Cube (I. Cu). He's a terrific pick as the staunch back-up man to J. Lo. I loved him in "Trespass," and I love him here.If you want to see a giant snake movie, skip "Jaws of Satan" and go right for "Anaconda." Fortunately, "A" comes before "J," so it shouldn't be a problem.
This review is from: Anaconda (DVD) Bad plot, bad acting. But the camera does focus on Jennifer Lopez' number one asset.

THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE ALMOST EVER VISUAL SUPRISSES.greeat acting im glad that jon voight guy got eaten.and its suspensful. see it you might like it.
This review is from: Anaconda (DVD) One of my favorite classic "B" rated horror films. The storyline is a bit more creative than most of the films in this genre, and the action and danger levels remain high from beginning to end. A group head out on a boat into the Amazon to film a documentary about a lost South American tribe and end up doing battle with giant anaconda. Jon Voight seems ideally suited to the role of the creepy bad guy. Other familiar cast members who manage to elevate the quality of the dialogue include Owen Wilson, Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez. Also, if you're a CGI junkie and just really get into the spectacular special effects in so many of today's action/horror flicks, then the giant anaconda in this film may seem comical in comparison to current standards. But again, take it for what it is and you'll have a good time watching this movie.
Stepping into the deep footprints left by other classics of kitsch suchas Airport (all of them), Batman Forever, and most films starring JaneSeymour, Anaconda is a wonderful high speed slither around an at timespainful script and special effects which vary between the revolting andthe sniggerworthy on the viewability scale. It's Jaws of the Jungle, with a 60 foot long reptile threateningvarious deeply improbable members of an expedition seeking the 'Peopleof the Mist', the standard lost tribe of the Amazon (yup, them again). If there is really such a tribe, they'd better receive someremuneration for use of their name in this epic of its type. The briefappearance by their representatives was marked by probably thestraightest acting in the film. The rest of the cast provides us with a delicatessen of hams and sundryovercooked meats, all of whom appear to be having a great time withthis piece of amiable hokum. The beast at times is somewhat scary, providing some real jumps andgross moments, and the comely Carrie Wuhrer and Jennifer Lopez play upand appear suitably alarmed at the sight of this improbably largephallic symbol bearing down upon them with grim intent. It's pacily directed, and the opening scene, featuring the unseenbeastie stalking a hapless if rather seedy (and therefore deserving)victim, is conceptually a neat steal in the Indiana Jones scene settinggenre. From this point on, it's an obvious but well managed build upuntil the group jeopardy scenario is complete, prior to mayhem breakingloose. The cause of all the expedition's problems is none other than JonVoight, an overly fixated snake snaffler who arranges to be 'rescued'by them, and then proceeds to take over after the leader, Eric Stoltz, playing out of character as a professor, is paralyzed by a wasp sting.Yes. That is what I said. Not having any adrenaline in the kit bag, Jon then performs unusualsurgery on Stoltz, who then thankfully remains in a coma for most ofthe film, no doubt to the relief of his bank manager, agent andimmediate dependents. Snake catcher Jon, enjoying himself hugely, and chewing every rug insight, is after a real biggie this time, and needs transportation to,and bait for, his prey. These roles are filled by Stoltz, his boat, andcompanions. To achieve his ends he utilizes a lethal combination ofsneers, leers, lecherous remarks, sarcastic put downs and of courseassaults with rifle butts. However, these techniques work best with humans, not irascible giantsnakes, and things end in tears at bedtime for Voight, who is targetedsuccessfully by the snake (a truly classic interior shot of the snakeat this point is worth the cash for admission by itself), thenregurgitated whilst the real star makes room in its' tum for anunrequited but totally understandable pop at the beautiful Ms Lopez. Inline with the overall tenor of the film, the final shot of thesurvivors heading off into the sunset with their boat confirms thesuspicion that director Luis Liosa and the cast had had their fun andthen decided to cut their losses and head off into the next projectasap.Anaconda was always a film which would be hard to do straight. It's notthe '70's after all. So Liosa and the cast play it with a discernibletongue in their collective cheeks, which hits the right note. If you'rephobic about snakes, this film provides good aversion therapy. Even ifyou're not, it's worth a visit, as it provides a strong cocktail offrights, suspense, and unintentional giggles, all of which make it afilm which is hard to forget and easy to like.
Anaconda was a good movie but it could have been better. For one thinganacondas don't make screeching noises. Or anacondas dont slither fast onland. Some things on the movie was really fake. But on the other hand iliked it. It wasn't as creepy as i wanted it to be, but it was still creepy, just the thought of big snakes eating people. I would recommend this film toanyone who likes snake movies. Or if they like a good movie that gives thema good squeeze.
I remember watching this back in the day when it first came out. I really enjoyed it then and I think my enjoyment when I bought the DVD was just the same. This movie, imo, is like I say the original giant snake movie. It should have set the standards for other snake movies. Though as I have seen a couple others such as 'Boa' all I see is terribly written stories and horrific graphics. As opposed to this. 'Anaconda' showcases something no other giant snake movie has been able to produce. That something is the feeling of a story that could really happen, in a setting that makes it entirly possible. When you watch a movie such as 'boa' or any other giant snake movie these days with the exception of 'Anacondas: Hunt for the blood orchid' you see these stories taking place in rural areas. Happening right out in the open highways and towns and unfortunetly garages. I guess I can see what they were trying to do with that. Bringing the huge snakes to a home or in a big populated human area might let you connect more with the film because thinking they can just come out of the wild at any time and find you at your doorstep is a bit frightening. However, as I said, taking the big snakes out of the Amazon was a big mistake. Though it may scare you more, (which the awful graphics sort of stop that from happening in the first place so why bother?) by taking them out of that setting I believe they branded snake movies, for me at least, as stupid and cheesey and overdone from now on. But back to it. I rather enjoyed the snake effects in 'Anaconda'. Only a couple times did you actually feel that the snake was fake. At one point, when it was constricting 'Gary' played by Owen Wilson, it didn't look that great. With this movie I'm pretty sure they had like a mechanical snake at times with real texture and everything so it didn't all have to be computer animated and thats what made it a great watch compared to recent reincarnations. They went the extra mile to please the audience and imo it payed off. This movie also carried a good supporting cast. They each seemed to fit like a glove in their respective spots in the film. Made you really believe they were who they were acting. All the way from the boat's captain to the camera man. There was also some comedy mixed in along with some of its fierce snake scenes which really put it over for me. I saw another reviewer wrote that he just didn't like the camera man. I would have to disagree. Ice Cube had an important role and pretty much imo came through. His comedic side mixed with this 'Don't mess with me' attitude shined through. And even when they did have computer effects at points, it still looked pretty good. I mean you will always know that its not real but it doesn't look fake at all except at maybe two scenes. Which are Gary & Mataeo dying. The rest look plenty real for me. Add to all of this the suprising acting skills voight contributed as a poacher underminding a boat full of people so that he may get his pay day along with the scenes of knowledge of the great creature just totally caputres the atmosphere it needed. Really well written, directed and acted out by its respected cast. This has to be one of my favorites in my collection. A definite buy for anyone who wants to see an intising giant snake movie that actually seems like it could happen and actually seems real. Or, if you have yet to watch one of these because of maybe bad opinions toward them but you honestly wanna see or whatever then watch this first. Or just watch this lol, though I haven't seen hunt for blood orchid, it seems to be like the rest these days in graphics and it was rated 6/10 by someone I trust so the first and original will probably be all you want to see but hey whatever floats your boat. Some people don't even care about graphics they just think its cool and thats totally understandable, whatever you like. But with me I would just go with this right here. Its the best.
