Stan Smith, who works for the CIA and is constantly on the alert for terrorist activity. Stan will go to extremes to protect his beloved America from harm as evidenced by the terror-alert color code on his fridge, and his frequent knee-jerk reaction of shooting holes in the toaster whenever the toast pops up. In addition to Stans wife and teenage children, the Smith household has two rather unconventional members. Theres Roger, the sarcastic space alien who rescued Stan from Area 51 who deeply resents the fact that hes not allowed to leave the house, and therefore, has been reduced to drinking wine and smoking cigarettes, and Klaus, a lascivious, German-speaking goldfish the result of a CIA experiment gone seriously wrong where the CIA tried to give a fish a German mans brain. Stans son is a dorky teenager who tries to be cool. His wife has had a past life of sex and drugs.

We have taken some photos of "American Dad! - Season Seven". They represent actual movie quality.
This show is funny, but it's different from Family Guy. It's morestraightforward and political, and it didn't really get hilarious untilthe second half of the season, when the show became more of a weirdsitcom-mocking show than an trying-to-be-offensive show with shockingDID THEY JUST DARE DO IT THAT?! story lines.Stan, Klaus, Roger, and Steve are all reasons to watch on their own asthey throw in memorable lines but when they include additional people, their conversations with them are almost always laugh out loud.Hayley was funny but got in the way and became annoying, she alwaysseems to be there just to complain, a bad way of representing theopinions that go against Stan's conservative beliefs.
Before I get started let me get this out in the open...I am a HUGE"Family Guy" fan, and an admirer of Seth Macfarlane's work. These twofactors made watching "American Dad" even harder. From most of the reviews I have read everyone either hates "AmericanDad" for the non-original character ideas and concepts (in comparisonwith Family Guy) or they have a problem with the show being"un-patriotic". My reasons for despising the show are neither...but while I am on thesubject...The word Patriotism is having pride for one's country, andone of the great things about this country is that we have the right toquestion ( or in the case of "AD" or "FG" satirize) our government andits practices. In this since I respect "American Dad" for having the"balls" to do such a thing with this country in such a "terroristparanoia overly patriotic conservative right wing" state. No my reason's for not liking the show are simply that the jokes aren'tfunny. As for the comparison between "AD" and "FG" similarities betweenworks of the same artists are all to common and should beexpected...What annoys me about the similarities is that they try topass off the same character layouts with slight differences, and assumethat we will take these characters for a brand new original show. Allin all American Dad is a Diluted Family Guy. User Rating 3/10!
For those who know little about this show, don't believe the ignorantbashers. The sad truth (i really mean sad) is that the jokes, and plotlines in American Dad are much more interesting, humorous, andintelligent than any new Family Guy episode. I loved Family Guy. I sayloved because it seems to be the one that has fallen prey to recycledhumor and an obvious detachment from its original creator. I don't knowif lackluster Stanford grads were picked to write new Family Guy, orits just been watered down for mass consumption, but its return is sostale that MacFarlane needed another outlet source for his genius. Itis American Dad. It has the same energy that pre-cancelled Family Guyepisodes have. Along with that, it also has the same number of peopledisliking it for its dry sick humor, and overall intelligence. The factthat the show has generic characters is a joke itself for those who maynot have noticed. Its recycled Family Guy lines aren't out of lack ofcreativity. They too are inside jokes for those who know all the FamilyGuy lines. If you are a true fan of what made Family Guy great, thenAmerican Dad should fill the void of what it now lacks. Another showahead of its time for MacFarlane, which I hope gets cancelled andbecomes rare since its current issues are far too developed for mostpeople with Neilson Ratings boxes in their homes.
Wow. I am so let down. All American Dad was was a rehash of Family guywith frequent cheap shots toward Republicans. And its not funny. I cantake a joke- and Bush is definitely ripe for parody, but this show justmakes fun of republicans- all of them. And- here's the fresh, edgypart: not only is he conservative, but he lives next to A GAY COUPLE!!!HAHAHAHA!!! That's SO FUNNY!! The random references to Sean Hannity andFOX NEWS don't get many laughs, even from my liberal friends. I lovethe characters of Family guy, but I can see them in that show nowanyway, so there's no point in having the same characters in AmericanDad. The ridiculousness of having a talking goldfish is limited- Brian, the talking dog, could go places and do things. All the goldfish isgood for is the occasional one-liner. And-come on- and alien? I mean, Ithink that thing is an alien. What is it? Whatever it is, it's notfunny, and neither is much of anything else in American Dad. Pass onthis show and just watch Family Guy- it's got the same characters, butit's funnier.
Seth MacFarlane proves he's not a one trick pony with his innovativefollow up to the smash hit Family Guy. American Dad! is unfortunatelymisunderstood as a rip off of it's own predecessor but it is by farnot. American Dad! is completely different to Family Guy the onlysimilarities are the art and the amount of characters. While Family Guy focuses on random humour and pop culture referencesAmerican Dad! takes satirical aim at politics and has many qualitiesthat make me prefer it over Family Guy. Unlike Family Guy, AmericanDad! follows one plot line and one sub plot without random thingspopping in and out. That already makes it extremely different fromFamily Guy which has lately been following 3 or 4 sub plots per episodewith the random pop-ins. This show is great because it throws everystereotype and every exaggeration of a Rebublican and a Democrat andforces them to live in the same house together.Again for those comparing it to Family Guy I will elaborate on thecharacter differences. Peter Griffin is a pop culture obsessed dim witwhile Stan Smith is an overly republican jerk who is racist, homophobic, and overly patriotic. Lois Griffin is a caring wife whoseparty girl side is always coming out while Francine Smith doesn't enjoythe spotlight and does basically whatever Stan tells her. Chris Griffinis a slow, stupid, lummox while Steve Smith is a sex crazed, nerdyteenager who o thinks he's cool. Meg Griffin is a lonely, near suicidalloser, while Haylie Smith is a pot smoking, liberal, who will save acat before her father. Stewie Griffin is a possibly homosexual babybent on world domination while Roger is a fruity, television addicted, alien who doesn't shut up. Brian Griffin is an alcoholic, witty dogwhile Klaus is a sex crazed, loud, obnoxious, German fish.American Dad! has been pretty successful for the two seasons it's beenon and i look very forward to watching it's third one this fall howeverdue to the return of King Of The Hill and the moronic time-slot for TheSarah Connor Chronicles American Dad! will air Sundays at 7:30 which isdead air time and may face unfair cancellation next year hmmm just likeFuturama...weird.
...and I mean that in a good way. American Dad suffers the same wayFuturama suffered when it came along. It was constantly being comparedto The Simpsons, endless fans creating surveys over what show isbetter, and Futurama always got an unfair bashing that it didn'tdeserve.American Dad has the same problem, people don't seem to think of it asits own show. People expected it to be just like Family Guy, which itwasn't. But that is not a bad thing. If this show had been made bysomeone else, I bet people would have appreciated it a bit more.American Dad is great fun, great characters and stories. It's not quitea laugh a minute like Family Guy, but it's still good fun. Watch it,forget about Family Guy, and enjoy it.
I was expecting this to just be a family guy clone with differentcharacter, This is more than that, its hilarious. The characters andhumor are on the same sort of level as family guy but Seth McFarlanemanaged to work his magic and create a whole new different level ofhumor and wit for this show which sets itself apart from family guy.A secret service FBI agent, prone to overreacting must find a way touse his skills to help his family and their new illegal alien housematewith basic troubles in life. Problem is sometimes it proves too muchwith hilarious results.Remember this isn't a kid's show and I guess thats what makes this andfamily guy so special. They can put in all the added toilet humor itneeds and the writers seem to know how to do it perfectly. Thecharacters are great but the main character Stan Smith stands out aboveall the rest (With their alien friend coming in a close second). Anyonewho wants a laugh, drop everything and watch this.
this show is actually as good as family guy it has unique comedy andeverything it is one of the best shows ever made and it is good thefirst episode was quite funny then the second then the third i loved iti know its not a popular show but i like it is better than family guyand its one of the greatest show in the world and another thing i likethe alien he is genius Seth mcflarine is genius i love his showsespecially American dad of course better funnier and bigger than familyguy it is one of the funniest show and it will always crack me up andall my friends like it too they think its funny when i show them it andklaws the fish he fancies Francine i mean a fish fancing a human thatis unique!
Yes I am a cartoon fan both on paper and animated, some of my favoriteare "ren and stimpy", "the Simpsons" , some Japaneses animes ,someDisney ... For me "American Dad" was so so, I saw some episodes, notreally my cup of tea until I saw the last episode from the beginning ofDecember 2007 , the S03E07 one .... ffff man this one stun me and amazeme .Here the plot : a couple of neighbors gay guys(cool, funny, charming, intelligent, wealthy, toughs street fighter, sensitive during the allepisode) plan to have a baby while Stan Smith (unpolite, violent, stupid, criminal, pervert all over the episode) the "american dad"hates the idea, his wife Francine Smith (generous, kind, sensitive theall episode)thinks it is marvelous and offer to carry the baby , insecret fearing to be kill in many horrible way by her husband. So what we have there ... we have the difficult debate of "can the gaycan raise children properly" with a black and white plot where the oneswho are for are totally nice and the one who are against are totallybad ...bravo , very fair-play guys , welcome to the unique way ofthinking , welcome to the fascist state.and also we have the total betrayal of a wife to her husband , getpregnant from the neighbors without discussion and let her husband intotal ignorance until the end ...hum what kind of family can stand thatand who can agree with this kind of behavior... but don't worry foxes ,Stan Smith is so evil in this episode than you cannot feel any pity forhim ......and at the end we have ...it 's magic...a twist than finally no oneis against the idea of the story. So I resume totally unbalance Manichean story and totally promotion tobetray your family ...discusting.I'm open mind but I hate to be fooled around, I know now than cartooncan propagate bad messages, I hope this episode will kill the series ,because it just sucks , I wonder who is behind that unmoral propagandawho really spread poison in the mind ,well I know ...surrely the guysfrom the NEW WORLD ORDER.
This has to be one of the best adult cartoons ever created. It's hardfor me to compare them with Southpark. I think that in many aspects,American Dad is way better than Southpark. Probably because itaddresses to a much larger public, while Southpark contains jokes thatsometime require some background knowledge, before you can fullyunderstand them. Even for non-Americans, this series are equally funnyand enjoying. Great job! I recommend this to anyone who enjoys somegood humour. Now we can only hope that the American Dad Seasons will belonger and longer (from what I know a season of American Dad has moreepisodes than any of its "rival" shows). Once again, outstanding workand I hope to see this continue in the future and become a traditionalshow (and maybe see it promoted in other countries as well).
Was American Dad cancelled? I haven't seen it in 2 weeks??! It's beenmissing from Fox's Sunday night lineup and replaced with some awfulsitcom called Free Ride. Or did it just move to a different day? Didn'tFox realize they made a huge mistake getting rid of Family Guy? Theybrought it back once they saw the error of their ways....The show ishilarious. Seth McFarlane did it again(we owe him a sugar cube). Maybethe head honchos at Fox can't understand this humor.too smart for them.If it's about content, there are far worse shows on TV and I think youhave to be pretty quick to catch the really funny stuff. Can anyonetell me if its true?
American Dad is a great cartoon ,another fantastic show from the geniusmind of Seth Macfarlane. Its about a proud American father who works in the CIA and just wantsto protect his family. The fathers name is Stan Smith and the other members of his family ishis wife Francine, his son Steve and his daughter Hayley ,theirs also anIllegal Alien called Roger and a Talking German Fish called Klaus.4/5 STARS****-Dillon Harris
First off, I am not a Family Guy fan at all, but I can say that FamilyGuy is better than this show, if not by much. Like I said with FamilyGuy, I just can't get into American Dad, I do watch it occasionally tosee if it gets better but it rarely does. Some of the background art isgood, some of the voice acting is inspired especially from SethMcFarlane and when the show started it did have moments where it wasfunny. But it isn't now. The humour is less politically incorrect than FamilyGuy perhaps, but it is also very derivative humour. Very little of itmakes me laugh, the jokes are clichéd and predictable and the writingis becoming stale. The story lines are also very unoriginal andrepetitive and in terms of pacing the episodes are also quite dull aswell. The music doesn't make me want to rip out my eardrums, but I dofind it forgettable and mediocre. The character designs areunimpressive, they do look like sort-of clones of the ones of FamilyGuy, and then there are some somewhat poorly detailed side characters. The characters are obnoxious and I find it very difficult to relate tothem in any way, while some of the side characters border onstereotypes or annoyingly voiced. So overall, I understand people like American Dad, but other than somegood moments when it started and the backgrounds and voices I justdon't like it. 2/10 Bethany Cox
First off, I can't understand how anyone can find this funny.Political humor has never been my strong suit, (save for maybe"Boondocks.") and it never will be.Not only that, but consider if you will that all the characters aredirect opposites of Seth McFarlane's other characters from Family Guy.Steve is an unlikeable, annoying nerd, Francine in my opinion shows nostrength of character as a woman,(How embarrassing!) Haley is hardlyeven what you call normal... she acts like someone out of that stupidmovie, "Reality Bites..." bitch, bitch, bitch! By the way, who wouldbelieve a gay alien and a goldfish with the brain of a German athlete? And then there's Stan Smith... nut job and scheauvanistic pigextrordanaire... that's just taking the whole CIA worker thing a bittoo far.If Mr. McFarlane wants to keep his fan base, he should ditch this pieceof crap right now.0/10
I love this show. It's such a relief to see a show like "American Dad,"especially on Fox. It can't be helped that some people are toounconscious to understand the desperately needed, hilarious criticismthat it offers. It's "Sullivan's Travels" meets "Dr. Strangelove,"rolled up into an animated series. Yeah, it's probably too smart forthe masses, but we have to start somewhere. If it's marketed like "TheFamily Guy," during DVD release, then hopefully it will later berecognized for its absolute brilliance. Speaking of brilliance, airingthe first episode immediately after the Super Bowl was unquestionablythe most impeccably timed programming in the history of television. DidI mention that I love this show? That I need this show for sustenance?
I have to say, when this show came out, everyone thought that this wasway better than Family Guy. But in my opinion, compared to Family Guyor South Park, this show is total garbage. First, it just doesn't havethe same humour and jokes. And it doesn't feel as polished, kind oflike the newer The Simpson's episodes. Now let's first talk about the humour of the show. It isn't funny abit. Remember those times in Family Guy where it just make you laughyour head off like when Peter pushes Meg's face in his butt and farts?.Well, this has nothing like that. Just things like... wait, this showdoesn't have any jokes! That's right, just crazy and ridiculous stufflike when Stan drinks poison and everyone in the house is infectedexcept Hayley but then Steve breathes in Hayley's Protection Jacket. What's the laugh about that? Also the plots in each episode feels like it's rushed. Everything feelsso ridiculous and low quality. Yeah some are a bit entertaining butothers feel like a Children's Story book, it feels so primitive. In Conclusion, I wouldn't call this entirely bad but it has it'sextreme down sides. Like how the jokes aren't present. But if you neverseen this show and if you are curious about it, go ahead and watch afew. But if you already seen and love Family Guy or South Park, I warnyou, do not watch it. It's so inferior, it might be embarrassing tojust watch this with someone in the house.BTW, for all the people who think Family Guy is Garbage and thinks thisis much better than Family Guy, screw you. I agree, Family Guy mighthave lost it's quality from it's earlier episodes but American Dad isgarbage. The only way you can compare American Dad with another Family Guy spinoff is compare it with The Cleveland Show.3/10
It is very hard for me to write something that does not praise thecreators of Family Guy, but it must be done. I, along with many othersI'm sure, was ecstatic with anticipation for this show. I was hopingfor a show that was equally as funny as Family Guy, which could only bea good thing. How wrong I was. The aim of this show was to take on apolitical spin and generally poke fun at the government in contrast tobeing a plain funny show. This, in my opinion, is an opportune time fora politically satirical show. This and non-frequent jokes are the onlydifference from Family Guy. I was very put off by the unoriginality, each character has a counterpart in Family Guy. There is theoblivious, manly and dumb father. The sit-on-the-sidelines wife who is ahomemaker and suppresses her feelings of how she hates her life. Thereis the daughter overwhelmed by angst and the awkward boy. Don't forgetthe witty and pompous character with a strange accent who is smallerthan all the rest. Lastly, there is the stray creature that was takenin by the family who has an addiction to something. If you have seeneither show you will understand what I mean. This show relies toheavily on using political humor, though that is the aim, it uses tomuch of it. Most of the jokes are unfunny and repetitive. It is tryingto branch off clumsily from Family Guy,and a branch-off would mostlikely fail anyway. This was a failure waiting to happen and I knew it.
When The Simpsons got slow and started losing it's spark Matt Groeningdecided to focus ideas elsewhere and partnered up with David X Cohen tocreate Futurama which was expected by many just to be a lame rip off ofThe Simpsons however it was a smash hit and in my personal opinion isbetter than The Simpsons.American Dad! went through the exact samething as everyone expected it to be Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy 2 butonce again American Dad! is a huge hit and in my opinion better thanFamily Guy.We have the basic formulaic family set up thefather, mother, brother, an sister but with the addition of an alien anda talking fish were talking a new spin on an old idea. The charactersare absolutely amazing and original even better than Stewie or PeterGriffin. We have Stan the overprotective father who works for the CIAand is demeaning, racist, fascist, violent, overbearing, stubborn, and closeminded basically a Republican exaggerated and blown way out ofproportion.Francine is the semi ditsy mother who keeps to herself andis 100% comfortable being a housewife, she's soft and mothering butwith an extremely psychotic side as well.Steve is the geeky teenage sonwho cares about nothing but boobs and Star Trek his father is ashamedof him as Steve is extremely nerdy.Hayley is liberal hippie daughterwho is constantly doing weed, rebelling, protesting, and givinghypocritical speeches during the show basically your exaggeratedLiberal blown out of proportion.Roger steals the show as the effeminatealien whom the family found at Area 51 and have been secretly keepingsecretly in the attic, Roger is outrageously funny he' whiny, b*tchy, and addicted to TV basically a woman going through a middle aged crisisbut in n alien body.Klaus has basically served more as a supportingcharacter the family pet a German talking fish he serves his purposewith some good one liners but he for the most part just gets in the wayand it's evident as he is more and more excluded in each episode.Theshow is nothing like Family Guy this is like Seth MacFarlanes SouthPark his show to voice his political and social commentary in anextreme over the top and offensive way. This show constantly makes funof liberals and republicans and carries some of the wittiest and mostlaugh out loud hilarious lines in TV history not to mention PatrickStewart as a lovable supporting character named Bullock.American Dad!is amazing political satire without the flashbacks, charactersimilarities, and random humour of Family Guy.
Seth McFarlene had made American adult cartoons very popular with"Family Guy", a very funny cartoon. His next creation "American Dad"was funnier in my opinion.Republican Stan Smith is a man who expects his wife to do everythingfor him and is an over the top fan of George Bush. He lives with hissuffering wife Francine, his daughter Hayley, his son Steve, hisspeaking German goldfish Klaus and alien Terry. What I love about this show and "Family Guy" is that it is not scaredto tackle political issues, such as terrorism. Stan Smith's rants makeme laugh so much. Good stuff. Stan Smith later played his role in anepisode of 'Family Guy'Best Episode: Stan of Arabia- Part 1 and 2, Series 1 episodes 12 and13. Stan has been posted to Saudi Arabia with the family and loves itbecause of the law on women. Francine has a tough time ahead.
On first glance, American Dad looks like a carbon copy of SethMacFarlane's "other" show Family Guy. The animation is near identical, the lead character Stan Smith's knuckle headed optimism andin-your-face presentation doesn't so much recall Peter Griffin as grabyou by the throat and scream in your face and Roger the alien and Klausthe goldfish work in much the same way Stewie and Brian do in theprevious show. So far so very familiar, as though MacFarlane dressed uphis fourth FG series with different characters when it was initiallycancelled so as to stay on the air but stick with it, and American Dadwill eventually reveal itself as a superior cartoon to it'spredecessor.Sure, the humour is once again a mixture of insightful witticisms, biting satire and odd bursts into toilet humour but rather than thechaos of Family Guy where the plot seems to revolve round the jokes, here the opposite is true. The flashbacks are almost totally absent andinstead each episode features a structure and character developmentthat is normally missing from the first show. Okay some of the episodesfall a bit flat but nevertheless, there are considerably more hits thanthere are misses and when it's good, it's brilliant. "A Smith In TheHand" for example is in this writer's humble opinion, the funniestthing MacFarlane and his team have ever produced. What's more, American Dad is considerably more politically-orientatedand everything you could conceive about the USA's current state of fearmongering and distrust is put beneath a microscope and parodiedmercilessly. Stan Smith is a boorish depiction of all that paranoiarolled into one and some of his outbursts and overreactions arehilarious. Take the scene where he locks up his new Arab neighbours inhis back garden for instance in a moment that scarily recalls thenightmarish conditions of Guantanamo bay yet still manages to be sidesplittingly funny or any of his numerous conceited one-liners ("onlywomen have emotions son, they come from their ovaries").Only time will tell if American Dad can outlive the shadow of it's farmore successful big brother, but like the relationship between Futuramaand the Simpsons beforehand, it's often a far funnier and considerablymore focused show that deserves a wider audience. Highly recommended.
