negative comments on this show

i totally disagree with the writer of 12/02--and apparently, so do thehome audience members--yes, it can be degrading to women at times, butthe girls have learned, nicely i might add, to give it back--i am amiddle aged woman, and i find it fresh and funny, and everyone knows wecould all use a good laugh in this day and age--i hope this showcontinues for a long time to come-- i love the way Cheryl and Jim getalong, and quite frankly it somewhat reminds me of my husband andmyself--i cannot tell you how many times while watching the show, welook at each other and just start laughing, because we can relate tosomething the either said or did--it is also nice that the kids are inmost episodes, and that they appear to be normal, not all sugary like alot of television families--i think that is what makes it seem soreal--

Awful

I was bored so I watced this show- one of the worst on tv. It joins alltheother "Friends" wannabe comedies - yes dear, king of queens, 8 simplerules, life with bonnie, less than perfect- no one can every compare w/ Friends.the only other comedies out ther that have survived and are actually funnyare Frasier Seinfeld and Everybody loves raymond. not to mention one of myall time fav shows Friends! ATJ (according to jim) is NOT funny i repeatNOT funny- go ahead, watch it- youll see what i mean!

Every Tape of "According to Jim" Must be Burned!

According to Jim is one of the worst TV shows ever made. Anybody wholikes it must have an IQ less than 3.The jokes are completely hack, and I'm getting sick and tired of seeingJim Belushi in ANYTHING. Why is he even on TV, he has no talent at all?The only reason he has gotten any jobs at all is that he is JohnBelushi's brother. John tragically died so we are left with the nextbest thing (meaning the next ONLY thing), his no talent brother Jim.Luckily for Jim he has no problem using his brother's name to gethimself on TV.The best thing Jim was in is probably K-9 and does anybody want to saythat was a great movie? This show is terrible and the fact that itlasted more than one episode is proof that there are a lot of idiotswho watch TV, and there are a lot of people now who are too fat andlazy to change the channel.

Jim who??

I thought this would be a good show, I can't see how it lasted this long.Jim Belushi is bad, Courtney Thorne Smith is annoying so is her sisterDana,Kimberly Williams, the only character I enjoy is the brother Andy, but heisn't a mega comedy star. I hope Jim Belushi doesn't try to make anothersitcom after this one bites the dust soon.

According to Jim is a wonderful show

I am so excited that According to Jim is going to be on anothernetwork, I think it's gonna be on the new CW or the My Buffalo TV.Either way, I looove the show and Jim Belushi has always been one of myfavorite comedians. He just has a way about him that just makes itwork, whether it's drama or comedy (the principal or K-9) and seeinghim bumbling around and just being a regular dad (unlike in DesperateHousewives where the guys are all overtly studs) this just shows aregular guy trying to be a good man, husband and Father. Theperformances are worthy of an Oscar and many nominations. I startedwatching this show again a little while ago and it is still as funny aswhen I first started watching it. Bravo ABC, you continually raise thebrow of comedy (though My Wife And Kids shouldn't have been canceled)

Wanna-be critics with egg on their faces.

Well, here we are in Aug.2004 And "According to Jim" is still running aswell it should be. So for the people that said it won't be around after thefirst season, wipe the egg of of your faces please. LOLI am appalled that IMDB allows these wanna-be critics that make fun of andbad mouth the shows and actors. Granted they should be allowed to give ashow or actor a bad or good rating, but making personal attacks on themshould not be allowed and should be deleted or edited. And I would also like to see some of these people like "Charmedchica03 learnhow to spell. But mainly.. GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT PEOPLE!"According To Jim" launched in 2001, not 2002. Big difference when you aretrying to say: "the show won't last". Well, It's still running strong afterthree years. And KEVIN stated that: "Jim is trying to follow in the footsteps of hisBrother John".. Good grief dude! So far from the truth. I usually don't liketo talk about the dead however Kevins statement is so far from the truth. Adrug addict is no role model! A few years after starting to be well knownfor comedy and a few films, John B. Overdosed on drugs. (Acute heroin andcocaine addiction using needles) in 1980. He only has credit for 13 movieswith half of those TV shows. Off screen he was known as a hyped-up partyanimal. Jim B. however has a popular long running sitcom, and he has a creditedseventy eight (78) films under his belt. Now I ask you Kevin, who isfollowing in who's footsteps?Normally I do not post comments, however with these people creating unjustMurder on these boards, I felt I had to speak up. I have only seen this sitcom a couple of times due to a conflict of time andthought it to be funny and what amazed me was that the 2 episodes I've seenso far, actually had an ending instead of letting it hand as most sitcomsdo. As for: vanillaicet and howtvshouldbe, sorry I didn't have room to talkabout you and how you rated this LONG RUNNING fine show. Thanks, John

Pleasant surprise

I've done my fair share of slagging American sit-coms on this site, butyou know what? I like this one.I'm not even quite sure why, because it's pretty formulaic - slobhusband, naggy wife, loser friend (male), harpy friend (female) - butsomehow it manages to keep sight of the fact that the idea is to makepeople laugh, not preach at them. Oh, and the kids are kept largelyoffstage; something I wish more shows would remember to do.I guess it's because I like Jim Belushi. OK, he's playing the samecharacter that made him money in movies like K-9 and Red Heat but hell,he's good at it, so why not? Added to that is the fact that, as far asI'm concerned, Courtney Thorne-Smith will be a babe until she's 90, andshe's not a half-bad comedienne either; and the sparks they knock offeach other as a modern-day Beatrice and Benedict are done with obviousrelish and provide a lot of laughs. It's not quite up to the standard of MWC at its height, or indeed thebest of British; but I'm glad we're getting re-runs here in Belgium, and I usually try to watch it if I'm in.8/10

magicmmirror 2012-05-04 22:33:36

a regular guy just like us

I wish I could say that this show was unusual in it's banality, but itis usual in every way.It has the dumb husband, his smarter but boringand conventional wife, along with the idiotic sidekick for "comic"relief-it sorely needs it.Stale predictable jokes, with even morepredictable reactions from the laughtrack, punctuate this noxiousmental narcotic's nauseatingly unimaginative plot lines to leave meeither physically ill, or in a deep sleep more resembling that of aninduced coma. But it might be on for a while yet because it gives theaverage American a personage to which they can truly identify.A"regular" guy just like you and me.I live in the southern U.S, so to methis show is just the opposite of escapism.Down here, that obnoxiouscharacter is everywhere, in some form or another.Seeing him ontelevision is brutal overkill.

Watch it for Jim

This is one of a numerous array of TV sitcoms about families involvingverypopular movie stars. Most of them, however, will not last. You've seenwhat happened to 'Bette,' 'The Geena Davis Show,' and 'What About Joan?'.Everything on the show has been done before. There's nothing specialhere. The only reason that I can see it staying on the air is because JimBelushiis incredibly hilarious and the little girls that play his daughters areadorable. I personally think that Courtney Thorne-Smith was a horriblechoice because she isn't funny.

2012-04-27 12:49:03

Love the show

Please do not take this show off the air...my family loves it, andthere is 7 that watch it....Jim is so funny and so is Andy....Please weneed more comedies, less realities and especially less hospital shows, now another one is coming on. Real life can be so upsetting with thewar, the killings, the rapes; that a half hour of laughter justbrightens up everyones day. According to Jim is a real down to earthshow, with different things our family can relate to. There are severalpeople at work that watch to show and we discuss on our break. The kidsadd to the show also. Please for the sake of all the wrongs in theworld, lets keep some laughter on television.

Kalle_it 2012-04-26 23:07:17

Just another unrealistic "average family"

Jim isn't funny. Jim is a self-centered, childish, manipulative, pettylying moron. The typical guy you'd hate to have as a coworker, relativeor casual acquaintance. The very basic question is: how did he manage to score such a hot wife? How come she didn't send him packing after a couple of months? Oryears? See, that's the big issue I have with the typical "average slobwith a hot wife" sit-com premise. Unless Cheryl has an IQ of 60 sheshould have grown tired of Jim's shenanigans a looong time before theevents of the pilot episode.Instead we get to sit through Jim's stupid antics, while his wife justfrowns a bit but ultimately forgives him because apparently loveconquers all, even self-respect...The sidekicks are equally shallow, with the token man-child who'sequally annoying as his leader, and the smart-ass girl who's there justto antagonize the main character. And don't get me started on the kids... As usual, the little girls arethe voice of reason and can act in the sassiest way possible because inthe end they're right and teach the parents a lesson.A show where kids are the most mature characters is either a kids' showor a very poorly written one.Chalk one up for the latter...Frankly I'm baffled many find the show funny, or even bearable. It's ashackneyed as it can get, without managing to be remotely funny.

howTVshouldbe 2012-04-26 08:44:37

Just another obnoxious slob comedy

Network: ABC; Genre: Sitcom; Content Rating: TV-G; Classification:Contemporary (star range: 1 - 4)Season Reviewed: Series (3+ season)The only reason According to Jim' is even still on the air, as of thiswriting, is because it isn't a reality show. Launched by ABC in thefall of 2002 with '8 Simple Rules', 'Life with Bonnie' and 'Less thanPerfect', it was part of the network's pendulum swing away from thereality genera and back toward more audience-pleasing scripted familycomedies. It's much better than a reality show, but a hard punch in theback of the head would be too. So, now we're stuck with this monster. In that reality rebellion I'mafraid the audience may have given Jim Belushi, the cast and hiswriters the impression that they were actually funny. They aren't andas a sitcom the show is a waste of time and space on every level. Howmany ways can you say that something is bad? 'Jim' is nothing, like aspec of dust in the air. It has no distinct characters or comictalents. It has no vision or voice. It has no chemistry. It has nodesire to do anything creative or original. It doesn't want to tell astory or even strain to hard to tell a joke. It wants to be escapismand get a laugh every now and then and it can't even do that. At thesame time it isn't even bad up on an insulting level that I can getworked up and challenge it. The show is headlined with another classic improbable sitcom odd-couplemarriage in Belushi and Courtney Thorne-Smith ('Melrose Place', if thatdoesn't say it all). The husband/father is, typically, a tubby sportsand sex-obsessed idiot always needing to be wrangled in by his moresensible, down to earth, and never wrong wife. As much as this TVhusband lives in constant fear of not having sex, he is also so selfabsorbed that he will forgo opportunities for said sex so he can attenda football game, watch a football game or some other act of selfindulgence. They make up cute at the end of each episode so they couldgo through the same thing again. None of these shows have the guts toend with their wives finally filing for divorce. For those that haven't heard this a thousand times before: these kindof escapist sitcoms are designed to pander to the married/relationshipset - for the husbands to fantasize that they can be as much a pig asthey want and still get Courtney Thorne-Smith. Wives are to feel likethey are doing an act of charity raising both their kids and childishhusbands who are constantly screwing up and getting them intopredicaments. We're all supposed to hold hands at the end, look intoeach others eyes and say "that's just like us" or "it's so realistic".That illusion of familiarity is the only thing that keeps these showsrunning. Belushi, swallowing the slob sitcom clichés whole-heartedly, isflat-out obnoxious. Everyone else, including Thorne-Smith, cuteKimberly Williams and Larry Joe Campbell (as Belushi's fat slobsidekick) run around and fall all over the place trying their paltrybest to give this any signs of life. It is embarrassing to watch. Next time I come across another one of these cookie-cutter sitcoms, I'mgoing to make it easy on myself and just cut and paste this review andchange the names. See if anyone notices. Hey, you get out what you putin.*

Forget twins plots - keep it adult

OK, so, jim and cheryl are having twins.Forget it.your 3 kids are enough.kids ruin shows for adult viewing. i know lots of people who watchedthe show and thought dana's pregnancy was boring. no one cared abouther as a new mom.have jim cheryl and andy go on trips places, get away from the housescene.this is a good series but bringing in twins will ruin the show. audiences get tired of baby situations fast.jim belushi, use your star power and forget the twins.

Sheryl 2012-04-23 00:46:35

Nice Show

I don't know why some people say this show isn't good. Jim Belushi isfunny, not an ideal A* wonder parent, but funny nonetheless.Courtney-Thorne Smith is good playing Cheryl and is wonderful playing aparent. I find the character Andy more funny though the actor isn'treally much of a star comedian. Dana is a fine character too, I guess, but a little rough around the edges and she always makes fun of Andythey always fight. And the kids are adorable. I love Ruby and Gracie, but Gracie is more like Jim, rough and not very nice. Ruby is more ofthe kind one. It's a nice show, but some parts aren't that funny. I'd give the show 8out of 10 overall.

headhunter46 2012-04-18 06:54:54

Finally, a sitcom that is actually funny.

At last a sitcom that doesn't offend my mentality by resorting tosophomoric, lame jokes in an attempt to get some laughs. This show has some very clever gags. This is a show about a slightly flawed guy devoted to his family, trying to muddle his way through it all. He sometimes gets aself-centered idea that takes him off on a questionable path. But healways manages to find his bearings and be the dad and husband heshould be. Nothing raunchy or evil just some "guy" kind of mischief ornonsense, and often it really gets some laughs from me. Just watchingthis guy goof up and then have to figure out what to do about it is ariot. This is the only sitcom on TV that I even care to bother with.

I wish I could get the last 20 minutes of my life back

I've gone on this site for years, but was never compelled to commentuntil now. I just completed my registration simply to warn the publicabout this train wreck. This may be one of the top 5 worst shows I'veever seen. Not only did I not hear one funny line the entire episode, but who ever was working the canned laughter button (every laugh trackwas the same pitch and length, and nothing was funny) needed to pickhis or her moments. Sitcoms that are actually funny don't have theaudience laughing every 3 seconds, let alone shows with no funny lines.Do the producers think that peppering every second with canned laughterwill mask the horrible writing and convince an audience that there's ashred of humoristic value in the show? FYI,swimming in battery acid isa less painful way to spend a half hour of your life.

Funny Funny Funny, And Oh Yeah, FUNNY!!!

Okay I'll admit it, the first time I saw the commercial for this show Ididn't think it looked all that great, but I decided I'd watch it anyway, and I'm glad I did. Courtney Thorne- Smith plays Jim's wife, shes kindaannoying but she also makes the show really worth watching. Larry JoeCampbell who plays Andy is absolutely hilarious and him and Jim make agreatcomdedic team. This is the only tv show that I have actually fell off thecouch laughing to. I give this show 11 out of 10 stars. This show isstayingput and not goin anywhere!!!

The Greenman Rules

I love the episode where Jim becomes the Greenman. It is great! WhenJim tosses that little person through the window, the look on his faceis priceless. Then when he starts to address the Priest in his wife'sbehalf only to find out that she has become the Pee-Woman? Greatwriting and great casting along with great acting makes this a mustsee. I am attempting to find a certain photo from that episode. I'dlike to use it as my avatar on a message board because I think theGreenman is hilarious. Does anyone know where I can download a photo ofJim as the Greenman? Can anyone point me in the right direction to findsuch a photo?

The things I do to see Cindy Crawford...

When people complain about American sitcoms, "According to Jim" isn't quitewhat they mean, but it's close enough; this charmless vehicle for JimBelushi as a slobby, uncouth husband and father is still preferable to "MyWife and Kids," but not by all that much. (And yes, I do wonder how hischaracter pulled someone like Courtney Thorne-Smith; much more believable ishow much her sister [Kimberly Williams, going from bride (as in "Fatherof...") to bridesmaid, as it were] detests him.)The only reason I watched this more than once was to have some backgroundfor the only episode I was looking forward to, season two's "Cars andChicks," with Cindy Crawford as a manager at a car dealership. Like mostepisodes, it wasn't very funny (and as this episode was written by scribeswho used to work on "The Nanny," that stands to reason), but Cindy -required to do little more than be a total fox, which she did to perfection- raised it to the level of bliss while she was on, though nothing beats herFrogiteer bit on "Muppets Tonight!" Sitcoms like this come along everyday, but nowadays sightings of the woman who put the super in supermodel aren'ttoo plentiful...(Note to Touchstone Television; no man, or woman, should have to put up withthe sight of Jim Belushi without a shirt.)

grace72891 2012-04-07 22:44:47

I hate this show.

I've seen two episodes, and I hated them both. Courtney Thorne-Smith'scharacter is selfish while Jim Belushi's character is portrayed as justplain stupid. They display and glorify poor parenting skills. I don't haveaproblem with Jim Belushi or Courtney Thorne-Smith as professionals, but Ihope this show isn't on the air for long. It is a waste oftime.
