good classic!

a simple twiste of fait is a good must see movie for everyone. it makes a good family movie! although not really suiatable for the really young kids. i own this film on dvd and i love watching it every now and then. its not one of those movies though that you can watch ovah and ovah in the same few days. i recommend this movie to everyone. the acting is pritty good for an older movie i think this is a definite classic.

Interesting Story

Movie got squishy with a lot of music and leaps of credibility as the story unfolds. It could have been treated more seriously and would have gotten a 5 star, at least from me.

Excellent

A great adaptation of a literary masterpiece, Silas Marner by George Elliot, all be it a difficult one to read. As a single father myself, I found this movie very inspirational. Although the movie strays from the darker greed that Silas had prior to the opening up of his world, Steve Martins character plays well the solitude that the writer wanted to bring across. Laura Liney is completely believable in her character, but Gabriel Byrne sees wrong fighting his Irish accent. As for Stephen Baldwin... his only decent acting roll to date. Sorry guy, you do a lot of great charity work, but you’re no Alec. If you are looking for a Steve Martin comedy... steer away, but if you are looking for something sweet with a deeper meaning, this is a truly great flick.GRG001.

A Wonderful Touching Movie

This movie is one of the best that Steve Martin has done. The only peoplewho wouldn't like this movie would have to be fans of Martin from The Jerkand The Man With Two Brains, neither of which movie I enjoy in theslightest. Thank the heavens that Mr. Martin broke out of his stereotype,and showed us he can REALLY act. Coming a long way from his thankfullybygone days as the Jerk, Martin shows us his tender side, in a touchingportrayal of a bitter hermit saved by the love of an orphan child. Whileitwas not the laugh a minute comedy I was mislead to expect by thepromotionsfor this movie, I still enjoyed every moment of it. Warm, sad, happy, andwistfully funny, it's a movie that can be watched many times and not loseits magic. And the Austin sisters who portray Mathilda at 5 and 11 areabsolutely wonderful, and are a perfect fit with Martin.

Custody Battle With Steve Martin-Simple Twist of Fate ***

Something very different for Steve Martin as he portrays a man whodivorced his wife when he found out that the child they expected wasnot his.Enter another child in his life when a young woman dies on her way tothe baby girl's wealthy political father. The father, who knew this washis child when he saw the dead woman, made no effort to claim the childas his. Instead, the child stays with Martin who loves her dearly andtakes care of her in a manner of a true parent.10 years later, the real father, Gabriel Byrne and his wife, LauraLinney, are childless and when Martin brings the child along with himto deliver furniture, Byrne confesses to all that he is the father ofthe child and a custody battle ensues.These custody battles are very cliché in movies. Of course, everyone iswooed by the child's kind words for Martin. The ending is unexpected,but a good one. Everyone gets what they deserve.

Excellent entertainment for all ages - no blushing necessary

A great simple fable, good for all times and ages. If anyone objects to some incongruities, such as the legal details, and such, then they forget that all movies must dispense with some real life restrictions, otherwise we'd never have 'happy endings' or some satisfaction out of some otherwise improbable situation. This movie takes us from one extreme of human condition to the other, and leaves us quite happy at the final (surprise) resolution. Hooray for Steve and the fine cast!

Excellent family law movie

When facing losing your child in the court system, a parent suffers aroller-coaster of emotions.Here, two wannabe fathers are fighting for their parental rights to adaughter.One father had been highly regarded in the community and had unboundedpolitical ambitions.The other father was a town drunk and miser who lived on the land ofthe other father.The movie is suspenseful at times, dark at times, light at times, andhas a great ending.

Truly a Touching Tale - lots of humanity!

Something about this movie really struck me and stuck with me. Steve Martin does an incredible job playing a quirky hollow loner who's cheating no good piece of garbage wife screws him over so bad he secludes himself away. Then one night an orphaned baby shows up to fill the huge hole in his heart carved by his ex ( not coincidentally over a baby he thought was his ). He pours everything into the kid and despite some quirky and unusual parenting habits he raises a great kid who is totally devoted to him no matter how poor they are.The "rich real father" thing is a bit overdrawn but it works as the lure to try to break up the happy family. Catherine O'Hara is also great as the neighbor who helps Steve out a bit with the baby.Martin's quirky sense of humor and physical comedy are on display yet his acting chops are also up to the challenge as there is a fair amount of understated subtleness he has to portray and I think he balances it well.This movie has a heck of a lot of small human realistic moments and dwells on the mundane more than most which is refreshing. The plot is kept short and sweet so that more character development and writing can shine through - again refreshing.I would have liked it even without the happy ending, but it fits well anyway.

The Real Silas Marner

As we all know, the real book, "Silas Marner" was first published in1861 by "George Eliot". Well, in the time the book was published, womenweren't "supposed" to write books like this. George Eliot's real nameis Mary Ann Evans 1819-1880. Her understanding of the "Human condition"and the effects of loneliness on a person are greatly adapted into thebook. If you read the novel, even though the wording of the book isdifferent than modern English, well... that's part of the charm of thebook. It takes you into a time when that's how they spoke. Whenconsidering the era of the book, and once again the adaptation of themovie "A Simple Twist of Fate", I believe that Steve Martin did anexcellent job. Although... there's no substitution for the originalwork.

Wonderfully funny family-oriented film

When my husband and I watched it, he had never seen it before, and he loved it too. Fun, with one of my favorite performances by Steve Martin. Great dvd!!!

This is an adorable film all should see.

I rented this movie and liked it so much that I bought my own copy. Steve Martin did a good job of taking this movie and making it modern from George Elliot's book Silas Marner. All the characters played their role well and it has great music and scenery. Everyone should at least see this movie once in their life if not more!

heart-breakingly wonderful

I am not a person who cries at movies (that's my husband's job) but this film gets me everytime. The young ladies portraying Matilda deserve Oscars - they're simply that good. Heartbreaking, beautiful, poinent (sorry, misspelled). The movie has a simple plot line, but it's told in such a magnicifant way. Others have expressed it better than I can. If anyone ever does find a copy to buy on VHS (let alone DVD) you won't be dissapointed. It's one to hold on to. If you ever need a good cry or to feel sad and hopefull about the world, this is the movie to watch.

Simply terrible!

This tear-teaser, written by Steve Martin himself, is so unbelievably bad,it makes you sick to your stomach!The plot is pathetic, the acting awful, and the dialogue is even morepredictable than the ending.Avoid at all costs!

This one's a sleeper

This movie is what I like to call a sleeper. The cable descriptions areusually terrible and uninteresting but this a wonderful heartwarmingmovie about love and family. When I played it for my sister one day sheargued that she didn't want to watch it but after it was over she fellin love with the sometimes sad, often times humorous story of a manwith nothing left to lose and the baby that saves him! Steve Martinflexes his acting talent showing that he isn't always funny/stupid. Andthe young actress playing Mathilda at age 10 is amazing and reallyreminds me of Amy Smart. Even though this movie is a little bit olderit still applies to life today and it is highly recommended by me!
