On a flight from Los Angeles to New York, Oliver and Emily make a connection, only to decide that they are poorly suited to be together. Over the next seven years, however, they are reunited time and time again, they go from being acquaintances to close friends to ... lovers?
As I cannot abide watching Billy Crystal at any time, I did not seeWhen Harry Met Sally. Therefore, I watched A Lot Like Love withoutbeing influenced by that so-called classic. Frankly, while I found themovie entertaining and mildly amusing, I also found it a bitscatterbrained and drawn out.The characters meet and have sex in an airplane bathroom almost beforethey have spoken a word to each other. It takes them nearly seven yearsto realize that they can't have all their ducks in a row and then moveinto a planned relationship, but they must take the bull by the hornsand follow their hearts. There are few outright laughs in this picture, but plenty of mild andendearing humor. Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet are good and have theright chemistry to make their mutual attraction believable. Thesupporting cast are basically props, with little to do with the story. It is a pleasant way to spend 107 minutes.
This review is from: A Lot Like Love (Full Screen Edition) (DVD) This product was in excellent condition when I received it. I was very happy with it and it did not have one scratch on the dvd.
This movie is so romantic and interesting. It's the best movie of lovestory that I have ever seen.Love is magic! The story betweenOliver(Ashton Kucher) and Emily(Amanda Peet) moves me deeply.Besidestheir love story, there are still something close to our daily life, suchlike job and affection. There is always something that differs from whatwe expect. This movie has influence on people to have positive attitudetoward life. And the soundtrack is great,is takes me into the movieagain.I commend this movie to who has dreams about falling in love.I'sa good movie that tells us everything will become better, and if youactually know that your love someone, don't let him or her go easily.

Everyone that knows me knows that I am a die-hard Dirty Dancingfan..it's only the greatest movie ever made.. Well..i'm actuallyputting this movie at Dirty Dancing status.. A co-worker told me that Ihad to rent it.. so..one night my fiancé and I were bored..and decidedto rent a movie.. I remembered telling the girl that I would rentit..so we did..of course not with my fiancé's blessing..what hebelieved to be a "girly movie"..was actually enjoyed for him..he wasright there anticipating with me..and begging for Oliver and Emily toget together..I have actually similar responses from other girls..theirguys liked it..;)
this is a great movie for (chick flicks). it is funny and touching at the same time. one of my favorites. ashton kutcher is great in this
Sweet movie that keeps a good balance between romance and comedy, butthe bonus stuff that didn't let this thing to fall apart was the dramatouch, that appears in the right moments, just enough to keep it realand bring few not to big but yet... surprises in an overall genredefined by clichés. Also the chemistry between the two main charactersis caught well, and the actors performance as young and naive oppositeto more mature later is captured successfully.I highly recommend it to people that don't favor the genre, because itis not pathetic at all, a feeling I get very often when I watch romcomfollowed by thought "get over with it and end for once".
Ashton and Amanda complimented each other beautifully in this charming, enjoyable, movie. I laughed, I cried. I am so glad I came across thislittle gem. From beginning to end I was drawn in to the two maincharacters lives and found myself comparing some of my own lifeexperiences and past relationships to the theirs. Ashton outdid himselfdelivering his best performance to date (Butterfly Effect taking aclose second). Both Amanda and Ashton were flawless and theircharacters totally believable. A great movie to watch snuggled up to aloved one on a rainy afternoon. Backed up with an outstandingsoundtrack, this movie is a winner in my books. I give it a 10 out of10:)
I rented this movie because I was in the mood for something awful, andthis movie exceeded my expectations admirably. There was literally amoment where I thought to myself, "Okay, this movie has overstayed it'swelcome RIGHT NOW!" It's not like it's the worst movie ever. AshtonKutcher can manage, and Amanda Peet can act like she can manage to act,if that means anything at all. Everyone else in the supporting roleswere terrible, but I don't know if that was their fault just due to thefact that none of them were even remotely interesting or necessarycharacters. Most hilarious in this film was the breakup scene between Oliver andBridget. It was like an school exercise in creating a generic break-upscene... everything in it was made so perfectly precisely to be exactlylike every generic breakup scene between two characters nobody caresabout made before.Very few subplots keep the action going, most of them are gimmicky. Thetrip north was okay, but stuff like the deaf brother (uh... FourWeddings and a Funeral? Yeah...) and the graveyard scene and even, to adegree, Oliver's business, was completely a waste of time, but nonenearly so much as Emily's best friend, who had to be one of the worstsupporting characters of uselessness ever written.--PolarisDiB
The only reason I watched this movie was because of the heavy bashing it received at the hands of the media. The best thing about the film is that it doesnt take itself over seriously and isnt scheming to be something it is not. Ashton Kutcher's character is realistic and boring at times. He's goofy in the film. Of course, A lot Like Love has it's share of filmy exaggeration. I loved the girl who played Emily in the film. She's hot, attractive, stupid and careless. I loved how she tries to think she's evolving all the time especially each time they show her a few years hence. Her hair keep getting longer and she becomes more polite. Some scenes in the film spoke volumes about how embarassing things can get. I could relate to some scenes in my own life. I don't know why (might ound stupid) but there was a feeling of deja vu with a few scenes too. THE GOODThe way it all starts and how stupid A.K is made to feel in the beginning, the deaf guy who plays Oliver's (AK) brother, the foolishly refreshing random soundtrack, Kal Penn's 20 second conversation with a girl on how he's gonna be rich soonTHE BADThe movie seems to drag 20 minutes before ending. I almost looked at my watch but I'm a patient little guy. Another bad thing about this film is that it may seem a bit adopted from other succesful movies to have come out in the recent past. Watch it. If you like this movie, watch a film called "Manhattan"
I must say I have never been a big fan of Ashton Kutcher however Amanda Pete is a different story she was in a Tv show called Jack & Jill which I really enjoyed so I took a chance and boy I was glad I did. This movie far exceed my expectations towards Ashton since most of his films has been more like overboard comedy which i never cared for. This film has a good amount of both comedy and romance and they balance very well.
it starts in the airplans bathroom..and aftr years the two unite, destiny brings them toghether, with individual heartbrks the two finlly find each other,,,rather fate brings them to each other... lovely flick.movie is tooo cool.. no messed ups, lovely encounters, dont miss the new yrs party scene ;o) muvie is funny and too sweet to b missed.. watch it wid d one u love!
When I first saw the previews fo this film I thought...ohh great another Ashton Kutcher film. Yes, that is exactly what I thought, but honestly...I enjoyed this one. I think Amanda Peet is a wonderful actress and she did amazingly well, and yes Ashton did well too. There are a few scenes that lag a bit, but the chemistry between the two keeps you watching. This is one of those films that you actually root for the main stars and that's what makes it more enjoyable. The music was great as well. I truly think this films script was really well written, sure some scenes could of been tighter, but overall this is a wonderful, cute...and enjoyable movie.
I'd been looking forward to seeing A Lot Like Love for about a month orso, and I didn't even notice until now just how much I expected out ofthe movie. The preview, to me, depicted the movie as being very funnyand sweet. And it was--it's easily one of the best romantic comediesI've seen. It's slightly similar to When Harry Met Sally, as you mayhave noticed from the previews, what with the time passing throughoutthe movie. Honestly, that's what really got me. I love how it wasn't aninstantaneous love, but one that developed over time. And as Imentioned in the summary, the movie was extremely funny and had somevery original ideas throughout its duration. And even though it was sofunny, the romance concept was evident throughout the movie. The actingwas very well done, in my opinion, and I plan on buying the soundtracknext time I go out and the movie as soon as it's available. I can'treally give you a summary of the movie that the preview doesn't alreadygive you without giving anything else away, so I'll just leave it atthis: If you feel like laughing with some romance on the side, A LotLike Love is a perfect candidate.
"A Lot Like Love" is practically a movie version of Amanda Peet's earlytelevision series "Jack and Jill," an affable WB dramedy. It feels likethat kind of period piece, comparable to 2002's "40 Days and 40 Nights"as the opening "7 years ago" should be more then ten years ago to makesense for the conclusion to be amidst the crash of the internet bubble. It's nice to see Peet again act clothed with people in her own agegroup instead of her trend of being the half-naked trophy object of anolder man. Peet and Ashton Kutcher are very personable on screen butthere is not much motivation for their characters from scene to scene, especially no convincing explanations about why their characters areever with other partners (let alone why these internet savvy folkscan't figure out how to use it to look for each other over the years orto stay in contact). The film incorporates a disabled character quite naturally andexemplarily, with Kutscher's character having a deaf brother and afamily that has comfortably adapted to that with signing. The NYC scenes are obviously not filmed in the city, though theassociation of Queens near the airports with cemeteries is accurate. The music choices in the soundtrack don't make sense for the periodscenes, much as it's nice to hear Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble" and AnnaNalick's "Breathe."
I'd been looking forward to seeing A Lot Like Love for about a month or so, and I didn't even notice until now just how much I expected out of the movie. The preview, to me, depicted the movie as being very funny and sweet. And it was--it's easily one of the best romantic comedies I've seen. Ashton plays a more subdued/thoughtful character than he usually does, and Peet plays a wild girl, and its cool to see how their characters change their hair, their clothes, and their feelings over the years. Peet is really good as Emily, the tough girl who has always had a man in her life is trying to figure out her place in the world. Her character is both vulnerable and stubborn. Ashton fans will also enjoy seeing him here - he's really kind of charming. The chemistry between Ashton and Peet is great, a cute couple. One great scene is when they are singing together on a long car ride, and other great scenes show how they support each other after a tough break up, or a death in the family, or losing a job. It all seems very genuine (you recognize parts of you or your friends in the characters). I had a lot of choices of movies to watch this weekend I'm glad I chose A Lot Like love.
I got free tickets to see this film and I thought, why not? And I'mglad... because I've watched a lot of movies in my life. A lot of crapmovies. But "A Lot like Love" is one of those movies that truly makesyou feel good. Makes you smile when the characters are happy. Makes youlaugh when they're being funny. Makes you sad when they're not happy. Ithink part of the reason why we feel that way is because we can relateto the characters. We've all been at that point with a person we love. We've all sung bad songs on the radio in the car and forgotten lyrics. It's a beautiful movie. Might not be the best. Might not be the mostoriginal. Might not even fall within any category... but it definitelymakes you feel good.
I made the mistake of seeing this movie on the big screen. I wish I would have saved my money and rented it instead. The plot revolves around Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet's characters. They become friends and then go to a party together. They loose each other at the party. This pretty much happens over and over again until they finally get together at the end. It is pretty much a dumbed down version of When Harry Met Sally, without the witty dialogue and great acting.
I greatly enjoyed watching characters Oliver (Kutcher) and Emily (Peet)grow and change throughout the course of this movie. What I enjoyedeven more was watching their relationship blossom. The dialog in thismovie is realistic, although perhaps the likelihood of the situationsaren't. The characters are deep and easy to care for. I definitelyfound myself wanting things to work for Oliver and Emily, and wasdisappointed each time something set them back. This movie is funny, cute, and touching. It's a great love story, acted beautifully. If youliked When Harry Met Sally, I'd definitely recommend this, as there aremany similarities between the two movies. In fact, I'd recommend thismovie anyways. If you're looking for a slasher movie with lots ofblood-shed, this isn't it. If you're looking for the greatest and mostground-breaking film in American history, this isn't it. It is however,an adorable movie that goes well with a Friday night and a tub of icecream.
"A Lot Like Love" is a courageous piece of art, drenched in social commentary and dripping with keen observations of the human condition. With this movie, director Nigel Cole earns entre into the pantheon of esteemed film directors and is hereafter worthy of mention in the same breath as Kubrick, Bergman and Kurosawa. Cole takes the modern love story and stands it on its ear by making the young lovers, Emily and Oliver (Amanda Peet and Ashton Kutcher) mentally retarded. The casting is sublime as neither actor must strain to play a character with a mid-forties I.Q. Kutcher, in particular, seems born into this role. In an early scene, he deftly captures the phases of a retarded man getting dressed: he struggles with buttons, is confident with zippers, and he goes positively bananas around velcro. The couple meet at the Starbucks where Emily works as a barista. Oliver stumbles in and orders a chalupa. Emily has no patience for the retarded man who acts like...well, like a retard, so she sells him an iced espresso and Joni Mitchell Artist's Choice CD and tells him not to come back until he digs the music. Oliver is smitten, and when he returns singing The New Radicals "You Get What You Give," the sparks fly. The young lovers must face society's scorn and disapproval. Here is where the genius of the film is revealed as it bores into the question of what comprises true love. The masses believe that it emerges from shared interests and outlooks on life, that similar views on politics, art and aesthetics provide the foundation for lasting romance. "A Lot Like Love" blows these misconceptions out of the water by revealing that at the heart of real love lies sex - fast and frequent sex with little chit chat to spoil the mood. You don't need to be Einstein to experience nirvana. In fact, being Einstein could be a hindrance, especially if every climax reminds you that the universe itself is contracting. "A Lot Like Love" points out why retarded people can now blend into the culture at large. While their functionality is no higher than in prior generations, the rest of America has throttled back intellectually, politically, and spiritually. All you need to understand now is size. Bigger is better. Navigate your monster vehicle down to Costco and load up on a side of beef, a big screen TV and seventeen pounds of creamed corn. Only one thing will shrink as this de-evolution continues: soon all of our kids will be worthy of the small school bus. See "A Lot Like Love" while you still have the noodles to appreciate it.
