Job Very Well Done!!!

This movie production goes to show you that you don't need a budget of 100 million dollars to create a brilliant film. You only need good writing and good acting to create a rare treat like this movie. Kathy Bates RULES!!!

Leaving L.A.

"A Home of our Own" is a film that shows the struggle of a poor womanwith six children who has had it with her life in Los Angeles. When sheloses her menial job, she decides to pack it and move on. We saw thisfilm when it first came out, but watched it again when it showed oncable the other night. The film was directed by Tony Bill. The best thing going for the movie is Kathy Bates. As the determinedand strong Frances Lacey, she does amazing work. Ms. Bates, one of ourbest character actresses, is a joy in the film. One thing that comesclear is her love for her children and her determination to get ahead.By relocating in a remote area of Idaho, her gamble pays off. Not onlyis she able to succeed in getting her own home, thanks to the kindJapanese man who owns the land, but she gives the children a positivelesson on how to be somebody and to struggle for what they want. EdwardFurlong, as Shayne, also makes a great contribution to the film.Watch it because the heart warming story.

Kathy Bates is a genius.

Kathy Bates with all due respect is not the most gorgeous actress in hollywood, that is why you can tell she's a great actress because she doesn't use looks to pull you in. Any and all women and mothers can relate to her in this film. It shows the world what mothers go through every day in their own form of it. This movie is truly moving and shows you how great your own life is and what you have. It is a great family movie and it turned on my waterworks. Good movie to buy too because I can watched it many many times and it never gets old. Give it a try. You'll love it and remember what you do have and who is close to you in life.

Must of been unadvertised

I had never seen any promotion for this film when it came out. I am a Kathy Bates fan and was switching channels and happened across this. I started watching it and loved it. I wonder why I had never heard any word of mouth on this movie? If you haven't seen this, please either rent the movie or buy it. It is worth the time to watch it. It is basically about a family whom is living in LA and the father ups and leaves them. So the Mother must support her children. Her oldest keeps getting in trouble so she decides to take what little they own, and find a new home to restart their life. Mind you they are very poor and they vehicle they own is on it's last leg. They end up in Ohio living in a farmers half built home. It lets you see through the oldest son's memories of everything that happened along the way. You end up loving the family and hoping for the best. I hope you watch it!

Ear plugs and blindfolds . . .

. . . are in order if you intend to watch this movie with your kids. My last review on it didn't seem to be much appreciated, so I'll site some of the specific reasons why I hate it. Mrs. Lasy constantly refers to her late husband as a #*&%$ Irish Catholic @#*&% - right in front of her kids. How is that supposed to make them feel? It is so dishonoring (and prejudiced). One of her little boys, in particular, needs his mouth washed out with soap. "Are you gonna sqeeze her b**bies?" he askes his brother, as he is getting ready for a date. C'mon. How gross is that? I can't believe that the average rating for this movie is almost five stars.

Sweet Tear Jerker, touches on all emotiones ...

First, I'm a sucker for true stories. This one is about a family with 5children so that draws me in even more. The acting was superb, KathyBates hits the nail on the head with her performance as the mother. Ifyou are a mother you will be drawn to her character. She may do thingsdifferently than you do, but you will admire her for what she does.Another memorable character is Mr. Moon. He too does a stellar job ofportraying the neighbor. It is a 'real' movie as far as I'm concerned. You will want to have a tissue handy because some scenes really grabyou. If you enjoy true movies like I do, this is one to watch. Iwatched it with a couple of my teenage kids and they did not "LOVE" itlike I did but they said it was 'good.'

Great Movie

This is an excellent movie. I highly recommend this movie to everyone of all ages. The point of this movie is not to take life for granted and be thankful for what you have in life. You can over come anything with the love and support of your family. Life isn't about money or what you have in life, but the love of your family.

Motivaional family entertainment. I was rooting whole time.

I want to buy four copies because I want my children to each have a copy of this movie. We all have hard times and this movie gives people the inspiration to reach deep inside to overcome adversity. Without being sappy, it makes you laugh, makes you cry with joy, and you find yourself rooting and cheering all the way through.Loved it!! Loved it!! Loved it!!

gripping story of the ups and (mostly) downs of real life

The narrator of this story is supposedly the 13 year old, oldest son ofthefamily the film is about, and he starts out by saying it's alltrue.Kathy Bates plays Mrs. Lacey, the mother to 5 children, the widow of anIrish Catholic SOB, as she repeatedly refers to him. They're poor, and on a lurch, pack up and leave their dumpy apartment inL.A. for who knows where. They end up in Idaho, working for a Japanesemanwho's also a widow, making a home out of a shack on hisland. You see (feel) the struggles of a parent, a mother, and not only that, butasingle parent and mother of 5 children who has practically nomoney. You see the relationships between siblings and between the children andtheir mother. You see the resourcefulness and hard work ethic of themother, sometimes taken too far, to the detriment of her own children(shunning the priest's attempts at helping out with free clothes or foodorChristmas presents). You see the struggles of the oldest boy, a 13 year old son, taking onresponsibility as the "man of the house," yet also being told to go gethisfather's belt for whippings from his mother. The mother finds work in a bowling alley, and you see her struggles withdating the bowling pro who works there.Every penny meant so much to them, that when their house is burning down, the oldest daughter risks her life to run inside and find the money jar, andcries on her mother when she has to tell her she couldn't findit. One of the sons discovers a junk yard on the way home on the schoolbus andends up making many visits, scavenging various items for the house, pullingit all the way home on a make-shift wagon. As someone else already commented, the Christmas morning scene ispoignant,as is the ending of the film. The ending was just another beginning, I would think, for thisfamily.

"When you're really really poor, everything you see is something you can't have. "

This is a heart wrenching tale about a single mom trying her best toprovide for her family. Kathy Bates is outstanding in her portrayal ofa hard scrabble mom, down on her luck, who tries to start over andprovide a home for her kids. I can't say enough about her performance. This family goes through some really difficult times, so this isn'tnecessarily a feel good movie, although there are some inspiringmoments. Just when you think things can't get any worse for thisfamily, it does. My heart just broke.I think this movie does a great job if it causes us to take betternotice of those around us who are in need - and do what we can to helpthem. It becomes difficult, if you run into a women like portrayedhere, that is too proud to accept "handouts". But this movie is alsoinspiring in that it is a great example of the determination of thehuman spirit and what someone can do in this country if they make uptheir mind to be somebody and provide a better life for their children.

For anyone who ever heard the story that their parents had to walk 20 miles in snow to school everyday

When I was little, my mother would pack up the Packard and load us kids in the back seat. She's bring along a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread in case we got hungry. And she'ddrive cross country to meet my dad in whatever port he had been stationed.Once, during a blizzard, my older sister changed a rather rank diaper on my little brother. RAther that travel with the nasty thing in the car, she threw it out the window. When we got to the next town, Mom got out and discovered that the diaper had frozen solid to the side of the car.A Home of Their Own, took me back to those days when you didn't expect much but hoped for a warmbed and something to eat. It takes the view back to a time when women were tough because they had to be.A lot of men were off to war and women kept the home fires burning. In this case, Kathy Bates finds herselfa single mom, trying to build a "home of their own" for her five young kids. The movie humbles you and remindsyou that life in the early 40's and 50's required imagination. Buy it for yourself and your grandkids. It's exciting and sad and offers us all a valuable lesson.

Wonderful movie

This movie is a wonderful drama. Kathy Bates plays a mom who one day decides to leave the city for a better life. She finds the perfect house: a half built "shack". From then on the family goes through many trials, but she goes from having only her family being close to... well I don't want to give away the movie. just see it.

not well known--too bad!

this movie is excellent. it makes me cry everytime i see it. it's too bad that more people have never heard of it. kathy bates is a wonderful actress, whom never seems like she's 'acting'. i recommend this movie to anybody. it's very heartfelt and contains struggles and situations that should make people happy for what they've got. life can be difficult with the competition that is in society and the amount of money that everything costs... i, for one, am more grateful and aware of what i am blessed with after seeing this movie!

wonderful film I just saw!

I just saw this film by accident on television and could not stopwatching, like reading a great book. It follows no formula and I couldnot stop watching to see what would happen next. I do want to say onething about the first person who reviewed the film and generally saidpositive things about it except that the narration of the film by theboy did not match up with his voice in the film. How did you miss thatthe reason for this is, when he is narrating the movie it is a memoryand he is now an adult man and not the young teenager we see in thefilm, which is his memory. So of course two different actors wouldportray the role, one on camera as teenager and another as an adult manlooking back on his life who narrated the film.

Kleenex time!

The first reviewer took the words right out of my mind. This movie was sogood, I had to watch it twice to see what I missed. So many movies outthere that deal with nonsense. This one touches your heart. I'll admit Ididn't want to see the movie because of Kathy Bates but this movie changedmy opinion about her. I was disappointed that the movie had an open-endingbut was satisfied that they family was going to be alright. One thingthough... The narrator's voice and Edward Furlong's does not resemble oneanother. I have changed my own rating system..... Out of 10 stars, I give"A Home of Our Own" 6 1/2. Get the box of Kleenex!

Single mom faces obstacles to establish permanent home for her family

An excellent performance by the entire cast. Kathy Bates as a single motherfacing the many odds that seem to conspire to prevent her from making a homefor her family. Especially memorable was the Christmas morning scene.

RhondaP 2012-04-19 17:59:36

A touching, heartwarming story.

Kathy Bates does a terrific job, as do the children who act along with her. They are a family who has nothing, but she fights every day for the chance at giving them more. They have tragedies and downfalls, but it's worth it to see their happy ending.Sure, movies with this theme have been made, but this is still worth seeing. It is always heartwarming to see a family love each other so much. It makes you wonder if they have more, because they have less.
