I loved this movie! A wonderful family movie. Very moving. It can be a tear-jerker at times as well Great job!
This is a heart wrenching tale about a single mom trying her best toprovide for her family. Kathy Bates is outstanding in her portrayal ofa hard scrabble mom, down on her luck, who tries to start over andprovide a home for her kids. I can't say enough about her performance. This family goes through some really difficult times, so this isn'tnecessarily a feel good movie, although there are some inspiringmoments. Just when you think things can't get any worse for thisfamily, it does. My heart just broke.I think this movie does a great job if it causes us to take betternotice of those around us who are in need - and do what we can to helpthem. It becomes difficult, if you run into a women like portrayedhere, that is too proud to accept "handouts". But this movie is alsoinspiring in that it is a great example of the determination of thehuman spirit and what someone can do in this country if they make uptheir mind to be somebody and provide a better life for their children.
This review is from: A Home of our Own (DVD) This is a story about a terrible life that doesn't make sense until the very end. I cried and laughed and rethought my life since seeing it.
What a great holiday movie. Lets you know how it feels to be a poor family just trying to make it. And how things can all work out in the end.
I had never seen any promotion for this film when it came out. I am a Kathy Bates fan and was switching channels and happened across this. I started watching it and loved it. I wonder why I had never heard any word of mouth on this movie? If you haven't seen this, please either rent the movie or buy it. It is worth the time to watch it. It is basically about a family whom is living in LA and the father ups and leaves them. So the Mother must support her children. Her oldest keeps getting in trouble so she decides to take what little they own, and find a new home to restart their life. Mind you they are very poor and they vehicle they own is on it's last leg. They end up in Ohio living in a farmers half built home. It lets you see through the oldest son's memories of everything that happened along the way. You end up loving the family and hoping for the best. I hope you watch it!
This review is from: A Home of our Own (DVD) She has seen it as a teen and loved it but couldn't ever find it so I got it for her Christmas. But she has yet to have time to sit and watch it again because of so many thing's going on since Christmas.
As usual, Kathy Bates is outstanding in her performance. There aren't many movies that get to me emotionally, but this one suredid. I found myself identifying with more than one character: As asingle mother, it wasn't hard at all to relate to Frances' struggles. As a former willful but loving teenager, I sympathized a lot withShane, too.I felt myself sharing the family's joys, struggles and disappointments, and learned a few things along the way. Sometimes it's true that pridegoeth before a fall.A very believable plot and great acting throughout, this is a must-seemovie.

A very touching movie with Kathy Bates.A tear jerker.Anyone that has lived a hard life like in this movie will be warmhearted as a family can pull together with nothing but love, kindess and warm hearted people
A Home of Our Own was a great movie. My boyfriend, who is never affected by any movie actually liked this one. In fact he is the one who got me to watch it.
this movie is excellent. it makes me cry everytime i see it. it's too bad that more people have never heard of it. kathy bates is a wonderful actress, whom never seems like she's 'acting'. i recommend this movie to anybody. it's very heartfelt and contains struggles and situations that should make people happy for what they've got. life can be difficult with the competition that is in society and the amount of money that everything costs... i, for one, am more grateful and aware of what i am blessed with after seeing this movie!
I know a lot of folks talked about this movie being so heartwrenching, and at time a tear jerker, but this movie is as close to my childhoodas I can imagine. We weren't quite as poor, but I really grew up in ahalf-finished house and we were pretty tight on money. We neverfinished our house, but my mom sent three kids to damn good collegesand private schools while supporting us on a teacher's salary. And Kathy Bates nailed it just right. I think that this movie portraysa lot of things about people who are struggling to get by, and it doesit in a way that is very evenly balanced. I mean, her character ismostly sympathetic, but she shuts people out too. She's proud to afault. She wants so much to do it all on her own, that she doesn't seemto realize just how much help she needs. That sense that she is allalone in it; that's how we felt. I'm sure that's how my parents felt. Iliked how she found friends who knew how to handle her pride and stillhelp her. I loved this movie but it is hard for me to watch! I never got nails for Christmas, though!I think the bit about the disclaimer that this is all fiction is justthe standard CYA language the lawyers put in at the end of every movie. There's lots of novels that are "fiction" that are true.
If you know what its like to be poor, or even if you empathise with the unfortunate, then you will surely love this movie. It brings tears to your eyes to see the middle-aged widow, played by Kathy Bates, struggle with her six children, to build a house, from nothing. I believe if you want to give your kids a shock of reality, then this movie is as real as you can get. Many families live like this in the third world. You come away with an appreciation of the true things in life: love, and family values.
This movie is a wonderful drama. Kathy Bates plays a mom who one day decides to leave the city for a better life. She finds the perfect house: a half built "shack". From then on the family goes through many trials, but she goes from having only her family being close to... well I don't want to give away the movie. just see it.
If you grew up in a situation where you've had to go without you will appreciate what you have by the end of the movie. Its a story of facing adversity, accountability, and hard work, values that are long dead in the country
This review is from: A Home of our Own (DVD) This is a great movie. I'm surprised it didn't garner more attention considering it was made during a peak in Kathy Bates and Edward Furlong's popularity. I would definitely recommend this film.
This movie was as close to home as it gets. We were not as poor as theLacey's, but some of our Christmas's were skimpy. I particularlythought the casting was good and the plot line was very believable. When my grandparents first got indoor plumbing, the whole familygathered at their house to celebrate. No more long cold trips duringwinter! I imagine that most people who watched this movie wascritiquing the character development and other mundane points, butanyone who has been lacking the common necessities was looking at thisin a far different light. At first I thought more interaction withbetween Murray and the junkyard owner would have helped, then Irealized that this was about Frances and her struggle to provide forher children. Some of the kids characters were never developed but itdidn't matter. They were shown to be suffering during the bad times andenjoying the good times. I want to watch it again to see what I missed.
This review is from: A Home of our Own (DVD) This movie is an incredible story of survival. Well acted. Loveable characters. A must see.
I want to buy four copies because I want my children to each have a copy of this movie. We all have hard times and this movie gives people the inspiration to reach deep inside to overcome adversity. Without being sappy, it makes you laugh, makes you cry with joy, and you find yourself rooting and cheering all the way through.Loved it!! Loved it!! Loved it!!
If you "get" the comedy of John Water's movies, Little House on thePrairie,Match Game, and like Helen Keller Jokes...Then you MUST add this movie toyour collection!!! When I am feeling down I sometimes watch this movie andit is so uplifting because the characters and story in this film are oh somiserable. I agree, the Christmas morning scene had me rolling on the flooras well!! I like it especially when they finally get a toilet!! All thechild actor's need to be cast in future John Waters' films. (Edward Furlongalready starred in his movie, "Pecker" and I will bet anything that Johndiscovered him NOT from T2, but from this film. I think John Waters and Ihave exactly the same mind...Twisted as all hell!)
