A Guy Thing Not A Good Thing

There were good actors&actresses in this movie. But the movie didn't make good use of them. The laughs were passable at best. Jason Lee who was funny and terrific in Heartbreakers. Performance was deadpan&uninteresting. Selma Blair in my opinion made the movie funny . Julia Stiles was terrific but the movie rely on her too much to make the movie. So rent it don't buy it.

Could have been better, but, it's a cute movie

This movie starts out brisk, has some slow moments in the middle, butgenerally moves along well, has a few very good moments, then peters outatthe end of Act 3. I was able to get to see this in LA premieres 2 times(with 2 different endings). Jason Lee is a star, but he is not tomorrowsleading man. He is humorous and holds his own, but he is better served asasupporting actor. Julia Stiles does 'ok' in a comedy role, new for her, butshe doesn't 'steal' this movie, the way a star of her caliber should. Foranactress who has so much potential(10 Things, Save the Last Dance, O), itishard to watch her continue to do roles that are so 'average', and thennothave her take the role and run away with the movie (like Daniel Day-Lewisdid in 'Gangs'). Selma Blair is a good young actress as well, and doesan'ok' job. I didn't expect an academy award performance from her, and shedidn't deliver one, but, her performance was adequate. Chris Kochdeliversanother film that is 'above average'.Perhaps the problem lies in the script more than anything else. I'did'like this movie! But, it is not a movie where you walk away andsay...'thatwas great!'...This 'story' has been done so many times before and therewasjust not much new here. The rehearsal dinner scene was probably the bestinthe movie, and Larry Miller gives an incredible performance in asupportingrole (he could be the best surprise of the film). If you want to go seeamovie that will make you laugh a few times, and have an enjoyableevening, Ican still recommend this film, but unless they have changed theending...again...leave during the church scene, or you will surely bedisappointed.

A Julia Stiles Thing !

Let's try to write about a movie after months of watching it. I've hadsuch a wonderful time while it. I believe watching a romantic comedyfrom the 2000s became such a risky matter, you don't know what wouldhappen or be shown of horrible images since (There's Something aboutMary) or (American Pie) which are the romantic comedy's mentors of theera! But this movie was a nice surprise, and nothing like what I fearedof initially (hidden dirty meaning in its title!). I believe this isone script to honor. It utilized some colorful characters and fancyironies, using many smart techniques (the continuous reveries forinstance). There is a creative spirit behind every scene, a smartdetail with every moment (the singing course at the end), and a realdroll situations (the Odyssey of losing the photos). Save the easyending, this is without a doubt a confirmation that (Greg Glienna) isenjoyable screenwriter, as his other works (Meet the Parents) and (Meetthe Fockers) were nothing but "Meet the Pain" for me. Actually it'shard to believe that the 3 got one writer, and it's just an insult tosay that this movie is far and away better than those 2 sins becauseit's far and away to compare it to them in the first place. The wholecharacters, even the little roles, were blessed by good people withperformance that hit the mark right ; (Julie Hagerty) from the 1980s'(Airplane) movies is one high memorable point in here as the nice mom,and this movie got me to love (James Brolin) finally in something; it'sa miracle ! He was that pompous idiot all along. The pace was fast, andthe directing is fine yet as a TV work, it wasn't as crazy as theevents sometimes and lacked some emotional feel as well, though theclimax was perfect. (Jason Lee) is the best example if you want tosummarize the cleverness and the loveliness of this movie. I onlyhated, and I mean HATED!, (Julia Stiles), she unlike the movie was socold and frigid, let alone being anything but a comedienne or aneffective part in a comedy, so how about being the lead's loveinterest?, in fact she was totally uninteresting !. I believe theromantic comedy lives a poor age at the 2000s, but small movies likethis with low budget and not very famous names managed to outclassanything bigger (or accurately looks bigger !). So, (A Guy Thing -2003) along with few ones like (Get Well Soon - 2001), (Just Friends -2005); with (Julie Hagerty) as the good light-hearted mom also, represented the best of what the American cinema could make at thatgenre lately. Thank god there wasn't one fart joke in it!

Julia Stiles makes it worth seeing

Sometimes the story of a movie is so predictable only a one or two thingscan save a that movie. 'A Guy Thing' is one of those movies. You can seeevery single little thing in the story from miles, which is not a surprisewith a movie that has its big climax on a wedding where people realizecertain things. I have just told you everything you already know before youstart watching. Luckily for this movie it has one or two things that saveit.Minor spoilers. The first thing I liked are the little jokes that do work and the secondthing I liked is the actress that makes those little jokes work. JuliaStiles is Becky, the cousin of Karen (Selma Blair) who will soon be marriedto Paul (Jason Lee). After his bachelor party he wakes up next to Becky, hedoesn't know yet who she is, but apparently they have not slept together.Normally they would never see each other again, but she turns up once ortwice even before Paul learns that she is Karen's cousin. Because Becky'sex-boyfriend, a cop, had Becky followed and photographed Becky and Paul haveto meet again to solve this problem. From here on, and actually from thefirst second of the movie, you can predict what happens. Because Karen isnot a bad girl she can not be the victim of Paul and Becky so the moviegives her Paul's brother Pete (Thomas Lennon) who loves her with all hisheart, so we guess (and we're right, of course). In a way have told you the entire story, but you already knew it. I haveleft out some funny surprises, but we must not look at the story here. Likeevery comedy it has some nice jokes, which helps the movie, but the bestthing here is Julia Stiles. I liked her in most of her other movies but hereI really loved her. She was charming, beautiful and funny. Jason Lee as theguy in this story is a pretty nice match. Selma Blair plays a character sheplays a little too much. She does a nice job so I must not complain. If youwant story and surprises, don't watch this. If you can like a movie for thecharming leading actress and the little moments she has with the guy youmight like this more than you think.

One nauseous blur.

What would you say about a man who was about to get married and washaving his bachelor party with some of his closest friends at aHawaiian guy bar? All smooth sailing until he takes his "bachelor hat"off. What would you say about him talking to one of the suggestivedancers and then sleeping with her? What would you say if that exactgirl was the cousin of his finance? A new low, right? Well PaulColeman, played comically by Jason Lee, leads this experience of anauseous blur and a new low. I got to say this is one of his goodleading roles. However I do believe his role in Vanilla Sky was betteracted. His finance named Karen is played by the up-and-down actress SelmaBlair while Karen's character, Becky, is played by the lovely andtalented Julia Stiles. Getting back to where we left off, Paul now hasto deal with one arising problem to another. He gets diseases, has todeal with certain people, and has to play his lie games with stealth orany member of each of the families could get P.O'ed, including one ofhis relatives that hasn't had a "bowel movement" for 14 days. *Vomit*All of this leads to the long awaited wedding with one hilarious scenebefore it recapping all the hell that Paul and his brother had to gothrough.Overall, A Guy Thing is quite funny and is all right. Sometimes thestory may seem to go nowhere and you get tired of scenes here and therebut it's a mixed movie. And if you're a Canadian and a fellow fan ofthe CTV Brett Butt sitcom, Corner Gas, you'd recognize a small roleplayed by Fred Ewanuick, the same man who plays the hilarious Hank inthe series. This movie is all right. It's another feather in Lee's hat(quite an empty hat so far, however). My Rating: 7/10Eliason A.

Loved It

Judging from the bad reviews, I must have watched this on a night when I wasn't too demanding. I just wanted a little entertaining .. not a deep story.DUUUH?!? That's what this movie is for!Yes, it is predictable. Yes, it follows an over used story line BUT it does it so much better than most.I had avoided this movie for a long time. I am glad I watched it though I do find Stiles irritating as usual. She puckers her brow for every emotion. She is a lousy actress in my opinion.I thought this movie was creative with the crabs, mugger, chef, spiked gravy, daydream scenes, brother.I laughed out loud a lot which is the supposed to be the whole idea!!

Spectacularly Bad

This is so incredibly bad. Poor actors. You can tell they're tryingreally hard to polish a turd, but we all know you can't. The writing isso obvious and facile, it's sad watching them try to sell it. The humorand pacing are so labored, it's hard to believe any of these goodactors signed on for this. That said, it's so awful that we're having a hard time looking awayfrom the screen. We just have to know where this trainwreck goes. Butthat's only because we caught it on TV. If we had actually PAID forthis, we'd be disgusted. So it gets 2 stars for being at least amusingly/fascinatingly bad. Andthe incidental music (as opposed to the trying-too-hard indiesoundtrack) is laughably reminiscent of an episode of Scooby-Doo... butnot as good.

A Guy Thing is just the thing

I gotta admit, I was looking forward to this flick for a while.. I'm a huge Julia fan, I caught the trailers and gag reels.. and you mix inSelma and Jason, c'mon? How can you lose?Well, I caught an early showing, and it was even better than Iexpected. You don't only get great stuff from the big 3, but you get agreat supporting cast, lots of fun twists, and a movie that balanceguy film and chick flick perfectly. You want a great comedy, perfect for a date? A Guy Thing is *just*the thing to see.

Aaron Martinez 2012-05-09 09:52:13

This was bad...

This was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen… I don't reallyknow why… Just your run-of-the-mill stories about guy who is about toget married, and starts to fancy someone else instead. Story has beentold a thousand times. Nothing new or innovative about it at all.I don't really know what was wrong with this film. Most of the timewhen these kinds of actors/actresses get together to make a film thathave already been made a million times before, it's reallyentertaining. There are usually little clever thing in them that aren'treally in any other. For some reason, this one just doesn't hold yourattention. You can pick out some funny parts, or clever ideas in it,but for some reason they're just not funny, nor clever in any way… Iwish I new how to explain it, but I don't… Just don't waste your timeon this one…

kcwells 2012-05-02 11:13:35

don't be fooled by bad reviews, this movie is fun, silly, and entertaining

I just watched this movie for the first time and decided to check out whatothers thought. I was SOMEWHAT surprised by the 5.3 user rating (what it isat the time I'm writing this), but I was even more surprised by the numberof awful reviews people have written for it! Seriously, at least half ofthem on here are ones saying it is "the worst movie" or some nonsense likethat. That is highly untrue. Granted, as with almost every other romanticcomedy bar a select few, the plot of this movie isn't the most original everwritten. However, this movie is quite fun and entertaining. It was sillyand cute, and made me laugh a lot. The acting is all pretty decent, andJason Lee does an excellent job in his role. I'm not saying this is thebest movie ever invented, but it was definitely a fun, cute, funny andentertaining movie that I would recommend to anyone in need of an hour andforty minutes of entertainment. The only thing I hate about the plot (andother movies like this) is that the innocent fiance gets mildly screwedover. I hate when that happens in movies. Poor girl. Haha, anyway, rentthis movie for a laugh and a fun time. Enjoy! 6.5/10, 7/10maybe

beachheel03 2012-05-02 10:11:44

The worst movie I've seen in a long time

There was very little, if anything, redeeming about this movie. Knowingthebasic premise before I watched it, I knew how it would end five minutesintothe movie. Selma Blair's character had the charisma of a speed bump. Thehijinks, I guess, were lame and unfunny. The bit from Billy Madison isrolling around in my head as I type this: At no point did any of itentertain. Everyone is now dumber for having seen it. Awful. Justawful.

Ryan J. Gilmer 2012-04-30 23:07:09

C rate comedy that could have been better

Jason Lee does his best to bring fun to a silly situation, but themovie just fails to make a connect. Perhaps because Julia Stiles character seems awkward as the connivingand sexy soon to be cousin-in-law. Maybe it is because she and Selma Blair's characters should have beencast the opposite way. (Selma Blair seems more conniving than Juliawould be).Either way this movie is yet another Hollywood trivialization of apossibly real world situation (that being getting caught with yourpants out at your bachelor party not stooping your cousin), which whilehaving promise fails to deliver. There are some laughs to be sure and the cast (even if miscast) dotheir best with sub grade material which doesn't transcend its raunchytopic. So instead of getting a successful raunch fest (ie Animal Houseor American Pie) we are left with a middle ground of part humor andpart stupidity (ala Meatballs 2 or something).

Get Over It!

Ok, so it's not Oscar worthy material? I'm sure you saw the previews--it is what it is--a sweet movie about not going for what's safe. And come on--Julie Hagarty is hilarious-- Do not watch this movie if you're looking for something deeper--it's fun, sweet romantic fluff which we all need once & a while. The commentary is a lot of fun & you have to play the interactive quiz.

Romantic comedy that actually works...

When it comes to mainstream romantic comedies, I try to avoid them asmuch as I can, but sometimes they are done so well, or dumb that theydeserve a viewing. This is the case with the A Guy Thing (I guess itwould be called Bro Thing nowadays) directed by Chris Koch ( Scrubs, MyName Is Earl, Snow Day) and starring Jason Lee and Julia Stiles. At itscore this is a classic love story where guy realizes that he lovessomeone else and that besides her he can be himself (wait 'till youstart living together and we'll see how that turns out for ya), butthere are enough gags and jokes to keep things interesting. Grantedthere isn't enough R-rated humor or nudity but still Jason Lee makesany movie work. And the fact that they didn't resort to any tricks oroverly sappy scenes only works to their benefit.Paul is getting married and we meet up with him on his bachelor partywhere he's quite bored and in love with his future wife. Even when theexotic dancers show up he doesn't seem excited, but he will be when hewakes up the next morning with one of them in his bed. Dazed andconfused he chucks her out of the apartment since his future wife isarriving in a few minutes, and he's not in the mood for threesome.Thinking that that's that he carries on with his life trying to forgetthe whole thing but he keeps bumping into that girl. But what is reallygonna rock his world is when he finds out that she is Karen's veryclose cousin and that she's attending the wedding…Check out my review site Rabbit-Reviews for movies that are worthwatching, Rabbit out...

Cheeky rip-off of a great play

A few years back I saw a play by the title of "The Perfect Wedding."Whileit's been awhile since I've seen or read it, I can say without a doubtthatthis movie is almost identical in plot to that play. The original farce, ofcourse, had quite a few more outrageous coincidents and far moreintelligentjokes but the basic lines are still there. Even though the originalauthoris NOT cited in the writing credits I would be willing to overlook that ifthe movie were anywhere near as good as the play. However, that is notthecase. Please, if there is anyone out there with an ounce of sense - readorbetter yet go see "A Perfect Wedding" if you can find it playing. If youcan't, watch this, it's good for a few laughs, and the pharmacist and thespend-mart guys are great fun even if the leading male is a bit of adolt.

No chemistry

This comedy stars Jason Lee as a doofus who is engaged to snotty SelmaBlairbut falls for her spirited cousin (played by Julia Stiles) right beforethewedding. A formula romp that is hurt by the complete lack of chemistrybetween the leads. Lee is ok as the buddy character he has played in manyother films, but he just doesnt have the charisma to be a lead and Stiles,an appealing enough actress, again demonstrates that she needs to fire heragents, who have the worst taste in material. Dumb. GRADE:D

DominqueZarinha 2012-04-23 16:09:34

This was actually good.

Despite what many IMDB users think, I actually had quite a lot of laughswatching this movie. It's about this man, Paul, (Jason Lee) who's going tomarry Karen (Selma Blair) but somehow, after his bachelor party, he wakes upnext to Karen's cousin Becky (Julia Stiles). The audience never really knowswhether or not Paul and Becky had sex but throughout the movie, Paul is justtelling lie after lie after lie. I found it hilarious when Paul starts toforesee what he thinks will happen if he were to reveal the truth. This is amovie guys should watch because exactly how Paul reacts to the whole thingwith Becky may be the same way in real life how some men would react. I lovethe way Paul tried to hide from Becky at the dinner I believe it was. JuliaStiles can do anything, she can do drama and she can do comedy, I loveJulia, I think she's got a lot of talent. The highlight of this movie is all of Paul's antics and lies, remindedme of men and their overwhelmingly strange behavioural patterns towardswomen. Regardless of if the movie did or did not do well at the Box Office,it still has those humurous moments that kept me interested and laughinghella hard of course. Rating 7.5/10.

as good as i expected

This was a pretty entertaining movie. It wasn't The Usual Suspects orMemento, but it wasn't trying to be. For once, Julie Stiles looked prettyhot. Jason Lee was awesome as usual. He was the only reason i watchedit, and as usual he didn't disappoint. I will watch anything with Jason Lee,and because of that i saw this funny, entertaining movie.

Guy Thing

This is a well done romantic comedy about a chap who is going to marry a "safe' attractive girl approved by the fam but falls for a wilder one who is spontaneous, full of life and of course cannot hold a job. The problem is that she is a cousin of the chick he plans to marry. My first copy of this film went bad so this is a replacement so it must be pretty good. The flick has numerous hillarious scenes including one involving two of the main characters being trapped in a shower-bathtub by a snarling attack dog.
