In the 60s in Beirut, the English journalist Leo Cauffield (Rupert Everett)falls in love with Sally Tyler (Sharon Stone), an alluring American war correspondent. Leo entices her away from her husband, gets a divorce from his wife and marries right now to Sally. After four years of unclouded happiness Leo simply vanishes into thin air. Sallys life turns into bedlam. Firstly, she thinks that he has been involved in an unpleasant incident, then she discovers that he is a Soviet spy and probably even a homosexual. Finally, it turns out that Leo is in Moscow and waits for her. Sally follows him in the hope to bring him back...
