A few cheesy scenes couldn't spoil 28WL for me

Immediately, 28WL grabbed me with the familiar sense of abandonment andhelplessness that I felt in the first film. The crude actions that leadone to survival in the midst of the infection. The motivations of thecharacters were more personal. The action scenes were more violent, the infected just as violent butheld more intensity, and the plot drove through the film like aJapanese bullet train. Unfortunately, the chaotic scenes between theinfected and non-infected were not shot as clean as the first. DannyBoyle did a better job in respects to making chaos look clean. At times, it was difficult to collect my thoughts b/c of the fast pace.Several hoaky and unrealistic scenes took away from the film, but notenough to walk out of the theater disappointed. If you liked or loved28 Days Later, I highly recommend spending the $10 bucks to see 28WL onthe big screen to form your own opinion.-SC

A Superb Sequel

28 Weeks Later is one of the best worst-case-scenario films. While itdoesn't surpass the first film, it more than lives up to everyexpectation set by 28 Day Later and is a great sequel. The second installment of what is all but a confirmed trilogy takesplace six months after all of the infected from the first movie havestarved and died… again. American forces have moved in and are nowattempting to rebuild and repopulate England starting at the Isle ofDogs in London. Amongst the civilians now living in complete safety andquarantine is a man named Don, who fled a refuge under attack 28 weeksprior where he lost his wife and was the only survivor, or so hethought.Don's children, teenage Tammy and twelve-year-old Andy, come to livewith Don in the quarantine some time later. The mischievous kidsfinding it difficult to live in their new surroundings break out ofquarantine and attempt to find solace in their old home, and it's therethat they find their mother; alive, infected, but not symptomatic. And from that point on, the movie snowballs into the usualcatastrophic, apocalyptic, epidemic scenario film. Sort of predictable, but enjoyable none-the-less (and it's the very formula that always haspeople coming back for more). The biggest difference of all with 28Weeks Later is that this film is actually good. It's atmospheric andfrightening. There is a fair bit of gore, but it never gets lost in itsown indulgences. The film is well acted, well produced, and well worthit. When this film gets moving, it's one hell of a ride. The only problem with 28 Weeks Later is that there are far too manyclichés surrounding a survival horror movie that it's hard not to getbogged down in at least a few. There's the rag-tag group of survivors, the rogue military escort, the looming presence of a hidden evilenterprise, the "why in the hell would you do that??" situations, andmany more that it's a futile attempt to encompass them all. Thankfully,28 Weeks Later does enough of them right that it's hard to stay mad atit for too long.Survival horror movies are unique in the sense that no other film genrehas as many clichés to avoid and/or reinvent, and there are anastronomical number of ways to muck it all up. That said, 28 WeeksLater navigates through the pits of plot holes and stupidity wellenough that it manages to become stylish, frightening, and above allelse enjoyable. 28 Weeks Later is essentially the blue print for allsurvivor horror movies to come for the next decade, and makes me wonderwhere the hell Danny Boyle was six years ago when Resident Evil was inproduction. While not quite perfect, it really doesn't need to be.Personally, I'm just happy knowing that the end didn't involve blowingup a giant mutated something or other with a rocket launcher with onlythree minutes left before the mansion/facility/island blows up. (Ifyou've played and Resident Evil game, you know what I mean).4/5

Gorror at it's finest!

This review is from: 28 Weeks Later [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I'm the type of person who is not easily scared by cheap tactics, i.e. cutting the music right before something smashes through a wall. This movie plays on the fact that certain situations are scary and the filming makes you feel as though you are in the middle of the action. Gore abound with fast but not sickening camera movement make this a heart pumping thrill-ride. The picture and sound are wonderful on this Blu-ray release, especially if you can bitstream the new DTS-MA track. I was "blown" away by the airplane flyover and the machine gun recoil. This movie definitely benefited from a larger budget. It was so nice to see a well done horror movie. The picture and sound prodcution was excellent as well. I have not been this impressed with a horror/ zombie flick since the original Blade.

Noisy AND Repulsive

I saw this because I was impressed by 28 Days Later. It wasthought-provoking and very disconcerting. 28 Weeks Later, however, pushes the boundaries way too far, to the point where it becamerevolting and extremely annoying.Firstly, it was much too loud. I suppose the makers were trying toinvolve us by giving us a sense of the chaos the characters wereenduring, but I really could have done without the headache that wasinflicted on me.The opening scene was bloody and violent, I was thankful when it wasover, but my relief didn't last long. It seems every single scene inthis movie was designed either to scare the daylights out of us or torevolt us with gore. After a while it got on my nerves and I longed fora bit of intelligent writing. There was a bit, but not enough tooutweigh all the blood and guts and noise.

insulting rubbish

This film was completely insulting. Why was security so lax that civilians could escape a restrictedmilitary zone and not be found for several hours.Secondly, why would a civilian have access to a military quarantinefacility and a patient carrying a deadly contagion not be under heavyguard. There are other faults too numerous to list that treat the viewer likea moron. This film is typical Hollywood rubbish for the mindlessmasses.Don't waste your time with this film.

Road Rage on Speed

The comments on this movie are as diverse as night and day. But I tendtoward night. What is it with all the dark lately? Was also not reallyimpressed with the cameo-style camera work blurring edges so we have alimited view. And all that shaky camera stuff which should bear awarning not to be watched by people sensitive to this eye aching, brainjarring style. Far too manic for me and I kept thinking about the ragethat was inside these people and wondering why they didn't blow up. Asothers have said the first movie was scary in its silences.Anticipation can get your stomach churning. The first one was soreality based, well acted and well scripted. This second movie was justa screaming fest full of jarring movements and noise. Yes it was unrealthat London was to be repopulated in such a short space of time. Or wasthat a experimental plot, commissioned by some scientist from above.Conspiracy theories? Maybe I am giving them too much credit, but whoknows as we are told very little. Robert Carlyle was amazing as thefather/husband, who for all of the love he professed for his wife, lefther with very little hesitation to save his own neck. Then lied to hischildren about what had happened. He sure got his worse fear answered.I did find it interesting that he was/became so super intelligent as tobe able to be one jump ahead of his family and away from all attemptsto blow him up by the army. Clever Boy! I liked the army guy who triedto improve the situation rather than slaughtering all en masse. Pity! Some of the effects where good, but effects for me are getting a littletiring, rather a good story like the first one. And if the boy wasimmune then......... Think I shall go and meditate now. All this rageis getting to me

A sequel that stands up to it's predecessor.

I Liked this one as much or even more than 28 days. The movie here focuses on the aftermath of the rage virus, pikcing up the pieces where 28 days left of. The movie starts 28 Weeks later when around 1000 odd english citizens are allowed to return back to London but they are confined to stay in a military guarded and protected block of the city called sector 1. The story develops as one of the infected from outside the sector is brought into the sector as the subject does not show sypmtoms of rage virus but it is later found that the subject is immune to the virus but is neverthless a carrier of the virus. Unlike the previous one by Danny Boyle which aimed at more of a cult clasic or film noir style and pretty much focused on 5 characters against an army of zombies, this one is more centered on the emass infection of people and we also get to see the role of the army as a overseeing body which protects the people and also kills those very people without compassion following strict military orders when there is a chance that they have been infected. The zombies are portrayed with greater movement and agility and ferociousness than in 28 days. There is also more blood and gore. The direction is spot on keeping the tempo up and the tension pulsating. The Soundtrack follows the same grunge metal theme which acts as the coda for the diseased and hopeless london. The movie sustains interest because it paints this grand canvas of large scale infection seen and experienced through the eyes of a family. Robert Carlyle is the father of this family and it is about him and his two daughters and his wife and what happens to them along the way. I won't give away more than that. The spanish director of this film is really good and this is his first movie in the English language. This guy is going to make a lot of good movies. He is that good. He's a made a sequel that stands up to the predecessor.regards, Vikram

A worthy vehicle for the near-invincible rage virus!

After a second viewing on DVD, this sequel really grew on me. At thetheater, I was put off by what I thought at the time were absurditiesin the plot. The incompetence of the U.S. military brass seemed tooabsolute to be believed. But when I think about it, a little disconnectcan go a long way, especially when you're dealing with a beast likethis virus. This film is not a simple rehash of it's predecessor - it spins it'sown yarn. While the horror elements are undeniable, Weeks is structuredmore like a disaster movie. The first act provides plenty of buildupand foreshadowing. I don't think I'll be giving much away if I say thatat a certain point, things proceed less than perfectly. The writing issolid enough that I felt for the characters. Certain scenes deliveredextra dramatic and/or tragic weight and there were many visual imagesthat suitably conveyed the most ghastly of occasions.Following an original breakout like 28 Days Later is a thankless task.If not quite as bold and original, Weeks acquits itself well, successfully maintaining my fascination with the overall scenarioestablished in Days. If sensational bleakness is what you crave in yourentertainment, this franchise is hard to beat.

Great camera-work and music set a good mood, but characters make it a bad movie.

Great cinematography, great music and sound effects, they really setthe mood well.HOWEVER, a frustrating movie. If you care at all about believability ofthe characters, you will be disappointed.Midway through the movie, a bunch of characters do really stupid thingswhich move the plot along, and their actions aren't very believable.Things that make the viewer very frustrated.I don't know, that kinda ruined the movie for me, I like my charactersbelievable.Maybe I'm just in a bad mood :>

Mindless Gorefest

One star goes to the 4-note song that is repeated throughout this filmduring each of the many scenes of intense violence. Other than thescore, this film is a pure waste of time. It lacks all the finesse andstyle of "28 Days Later." At two hours of almost non-stop slaughter, ithas no character development and no plot. Granted, "28 Days Later" wasslim on both, but this sequel has dispensed with *every* element of agood movie. And, because it's a sequel, it also lacks the novelty ofthe original film. The director subscribes to the "scare the audiencewith sudden loud noises" school of horror film-making. Unable to walkout (since I was with someone who, no matter how bad the film is,refuses to do so), I came out of this movie thoroughly disgusted I hadto waste my time on it.

ALMOST as good as the original

28 Weeks Later is the sequel of the popular move, 28 Days Later. Whereas 28 Days Later revolved around the desolate country, 28 Weeks Later begins with the re-population of the cities. In doing so the RAGE virus is unleashed yet again, causing many people to turn into zombie-like creatures. I was a huge fan of 28 Days Later and I can gladly say 28 Weeks Later is a worthy sequel. Although they are entirely different movies, they feature the same cinematography and soundtrack, which allows them to seem closely related. The video quality is top notch on my upconverting DVD player and the sound was crystal clear through my surround sound speakers. Overall, I think if you are a fan of the original or just enjoy zombie-related movies you should check out 28 Weeks Later

Entertaining, violent and intelligent

A very good zombie film, it even surpasses its predecessor, the veryworthy 28 Days Later. Directed by Spanish director Juan CarlosFresnadillo, the movie starts 28 weeks after the first film. With thefirst outbreak apparently ended, an American led military force arrivesat the deserted London (in a not so subtle allusion to the occupationof Iraq), securing certain areas and allowing English citizens who havebeen abroad during the outbreak to return. Among them are two children(played by Imogen Poots and Mackintosh Muggleton; one of the bestscenes of the movie has nothing to do with zombies and have themrunning through the deserted streets of the English capital). Asexpected, though, the zombies have not exactly disappeared, and arebound to return with a vengeance. Robert Carlyle does a fine turn hereas a survivor of the first outbreak who becomes infected here (and theopening scene is great). Intelligent, very bloody, entertaining, whatmore can you ask from a horror film.

This film is a total joke.

What made the first film so amazing, was how incredibly real it allseemed. All the events happened, in a way that seemed truly possible. Now, we have this film. OMIGOD. Whatever semblance of believabilitythat's present, is so thoroughly thrown out the window from the get-go,it's unbelievable that viewers are sitting through the whole film.I mean, the kids are brought to a quarantined area, and warned NOT toleave, and there's military surrounding the safe-zone, and these twokids, after what seems like an hour there, decide to go look for theirold house. It was right out of a shlock made-for-TV movie, that wouldbe laughed at.And the coincidences that take place, make winning lotto seemabsolutely common. This film was soooooooo annoyingly bad.How could anyone say this was good??

not as good as the first but still....

as far as sequels go this one could have been better.. but, it was still pretty good. if it hadn't have been a sequel and was just a movie by itself im sure it would have been a lot better. but overall.. the movie had a great plot, lots of action, and a few twists.. good movie to own

Stupid Kids

I liked "28 Days Later..." and while not exactly eagerly anticipating asequel but if one came out, I would definitely see it.Regrettably, I didn't like it as much as the first. One of my favorite movies, "Aliens", contains a line to the effect "Incase you haven't been keeping up with current events, we're getting our(bleep) kicked!" That's my main problem with "28 Weeks Later". Thereare too many situations where the characters aren't keeping up withcurrent events. A savage disease had just ravaged mankind on the islandof Great Britain where the infected had maniacally spread the diseaseby attacking the non-infected. I'd think that would serve ample warningto those trying to repopulate the island. But, no. And the Harris children were the worst. The story revolves around the Harris family. Father Don (RobertCarlyle) and Mother Alice (Catherine McCormack) found themselves stuckin England but the children Tammy (bright-eyed Imogen Poots) and Andy(shaggy Mackintosh Muggleton) were able to be shipped off to a refugeecamp in Spain. The opening sequence shows Don barely escaping an attack from theinfected but Alice is not so lucky. Don makes to an area in Londonwhere, after all the infected have starved to death, a NATO operationled by U.S. troops begins the process of starting over again. It ishere that he is reunited with his children.Trouble starts when Andy craves a memento of Mom. So the he and his sissneak off the area that's supposedly a fortress to keep out theinfected should they happen to still roam the country. These two shouldhave been scared straight about the risks they are taking. That's just the first instance and it's not just with the kids. To methis spoiled the movie. I need this movie to give me sense andsensibility because it sure needs to overcome its gloominess.Another pet peeve is the many scenes shot with a jerky hand-heldcamera. That style is played out.

3 stars out of 4

The Bottom Line:More of a follow-up than a true sequel, 28 Weeks Later nonetheless does what good sequels should do: it stays true to the spirit of the original while doing something new; an engaging and stylish horror movie, 28 Weeks Later doesn't break new ground like the original did but it offers a compelling ~100 minutes and offers allegorical connections for those who care to look for them.

Gore, Scares, and Predictable

Compared to Land of The Dead, this film is a hundred times better.Compared to the original 28 Days Later, this film is also better. However, is it a great movie? As a horror movie, it really deliverslots of gore, some great gross-out effects, and lots of tension. I feltso much stress watching this movie that I had a headache when I leftthe theater. That is what I did not like about it. The lack of anymoments of relief. The lack of humor. The lack of spaces between theshocks and the gore. It did not have more than a couple of minutes ofspace between one set of mindless mayhem followed by another one.It wasjust one endless fall from the top of a building and you are watchingthe pavement getting closer all the way down and then splat, you'redead. In this case the splat is that basically everyone dies, which iswhat made this movie end with a bit of a disappointing thud. There was one good, slightly funny scene where a helicopter goesfront-forward near the ground chopping up zombies with its heli-bladesand spraying blood and body-parts all over the place, including brains, skulls, guts, etc. That was easily the least offensive scene in themovie (that should indicate just how gruesome the film was).Unlike the original Dawn of the Dead, which ended with some hope aftertwo hours of non-stop bloodshed, 28 Weeks Later ends with theexpectation of another sequel. The ending felt cheap, and as the newzombies entered another city, I had visions of Friday the 13th Part Xand Freddy Kruger Part 9 and I realized that this movie was just aninstallment in another horror franchise. Expect 29 Weeks Later in ayear or two, with more hapless humans dying because of their ownstupidity as the Rage Virus goes from town to town, and sequel tosequel, devastating the entire world until it finally runs out of fansand dies between sequels. The only thing that I liked about the endingis that the new zombies went to Paris; and in a way that's a positiveending.

Brutally good!!!

Just got back from the cinema, this will be my first post so bare withme..... and what a great film....it doesn't let up from the start withhand held camera work giving the film a hectic nervous feel to thefilm...... a very very gritty, fear filled film...highlyenjoyable.....just beware for some gruesome scenes.... As far ascomparing this to any other film, it is different to zombie films asthey plod along..these DON'T, its fast and furious from thestart...Robert Carlisle is as good as you would expect from a man who'scareer is littered with great films(and the occasional stinker,Plunkett and Maclaine!)not a usual role for but he definitely pulls itoff.DEFIENTELY going to be a classic Highly recommended

28 Weeks Later

The British Army has a center that is trying to repopulate the survivors of the Rage virus. This centers mainly around a family and how they react to the outbreak getting inside their safe and protected community. There are some very tough to watch scenes in this early on, but there was a lot of spirit to get the main characters safe. There is one scene that was so horrifying claustrophobia wise and the music blaring (that famous music from the first one) that will make your heart pound from fear. I loved the conflict the soldiers had also, when they were forced to gun everything down. The actor that played Doyle was great at really making you feel for him, he was so conflicted. I didn't think I'd like this, but they really surprised me.

Bloody good sequel to the franchise

28 WEEKS LATER (2007) ***1/2 Robert Carlyle, Catherine McCormack, RoseByrne, Jeremy Renner, Imogen Poots, Mackintosh Muggleton, HaroldPerrineau., Idris Elba.. Excellent sequel to "28 DAYS LATER" about a'rage virus' pandemic that unleashes zombie-like symptoms upon therecovering British populace with a family attempting to outrun theplague with the assist of some sympathetic American soldiers embeddedfor the apocalyptic showdown. Infused with adrenaline pumping actionsequences and more scary the terrifying silences created by newcomerdirector Juan Carlos Fresnadillo inheriting the mantle from executiveproducing filmmaker Danny Boyle, aided and abetted by the maddeninglyherky- jerky yet affective cinematography by Enrique Chediak and thejarringly bombastic score by John Murphy sends a shock to the systemand unnerves the gooseflesh from the core dread of the unexpected readyto pounce. Bloody good ongoing chapter in the ensuing franchise.
