A low point in the Bond series.

This is the Bond film that sees Roger Moore doing a Barbara Woodhouseimpression by telling a tiger to 'sit!'. This is the Bond film that hasa crowd watching 'Wimbledon' style as secret agent Vijay (VijayAmritraj) beats a baddie with a tennis racket. This is the Bond filmthat has 007 swinging through a jungle on a vine while JohnnyWeismuller's famous Tarzan yodel plays on the soundtrack. This is theBond film that sees James getting fully made up in a clown disguise inunder two minutes. With all of that, plus a boring baddie in the form of Steven Berkoff, adull and overly complex plot, uninspired direction from John Glen (ashame, after the excellent action scenes he gave us in For Your EyesOnly), embarrassingly stereotypical depictions of Indians and Germans, and a forgettable theme song by Rita Coolidge, and this is the Bondfilm I doubt I'll ever bother to watch again.

The most fun Bond film

A massively entertaining entry in the Bond series, Octopussy is alsoone of the fastest, funniest and gleefully ridiculous action adventuresof the 1980's. After the relatively serious thrills of For Your EyesOnly, Octopussy returned to the high-camp shenanigans of Moonraker, only this time they remembered to add some excitement and a fast pace.Saying that, maybe it's the title, maybe it's the fact that Roger Mooreis all too obviously getting too old for the role, maybe it's StevenBerkoff's wildly hammy performance (about as far from 'TIMID!!!!' asyou could possibly get), maybe it's those ludicrous red jumpsuits theOctopussy girls wear, but the 13th Bond adventure doesn't half get somecriticism. I have no idea why; of all the sillier Bonds, this is easilythe best; admittedly the humour is almost of a Carry-on quality, but itlooks like everybody involved is having a right laugh! The plot is a silly tale of conspiracy, betrayal, clowns and prettyFaberge eggs, but the pacing of the film is so fast, lively andentertaining that it really doesn't matter. Roger Moore is always goodfun as Bond, and he has some absolutely golden lines to cherish here.True, he was getting on a bit, but who cares? Bond isn't supposed to berealistic, and the story is so brilliantly pantomime that he fits intothe scheme of things very nicely. As for the villains, Louis Jourdan isamusingly slimy as Kamal Khan, while Berkoff hams it up to entertainingeffect as Orlov. Gobinda (Kabir Bedi) is a dice-crushing behemoth whoplays it totally straight for the most part, except in a hilariousmoment when even he realises that climbing on top of a plane mid-flightis a pretty insane suggestion. These aren't top drawer villains, butthey're more than good enough. As for the girls, Octopussy herself, played well enough by Maud Adams, is a solid character, but KristinaWayborn as Magda is achingly wooden; her dinner date with Bond notbeing the film's finest moment. Q gets a bit more screen time thanusual and makes the most of it, while new sidekick Vijay (played bytennis player Vijay Amritraj) is quite likable and as usual for Bond'ssidekick, he won't make it to the end of the film. Despite the film's endearing silliness, it's also quite exciting too;the post-credits pursuit of a British spy dressed in clown gear isbrilliantly tense, while the lively chase scenes throw in plenty ofsurprises and tricky challenges for Bond to encounter. Okay, the Tarzanyell might make some cringe, but I don't mind it. An extended set-pieceon board a train is pretty spectacular, and even the countdown to thebomb still gets me every time! The first half of the film is anabsolute riot, with Bond visiting India and the writers having a ballwith a chase that takes in tennis, hot coals, sword swallowingperformers and a lot of cash. The scenery here is especially lovely, probably the most picturesque and attractive of all the Bond visits. Incomparison, events in East Berlin are gloomier visually, but even moreexciting on the action front; in fact, once the pace starts to quickenaround the halfway mark it really doesn't let up until the end. JohnBarry's score is one of his absolute best, a dreamy, romantic andsinister swirl of arresting hooks and even a new signature tune for theaction sequences which is mightily impressive. Easily one of the most fun Bonds, Octopussy is preposterous andextremely enjoyable. Don't take it too seriously and you should enjoyit!

"That's my little octopussy..."

If OCTOPUSSY is not the most unfortunate title of all in the James Bond series, then I don't know what else could be. However, if one can get past this somewhat inundated label - taken, as was the previous 007 entry FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, from one of Ian Fleming's short stories rather than his novels (each of Fleming's book titles had already been used up by this time)- one may aptly find some true gems to be salvaged here. The storyline presented in this movie, however, has nary an inkling linked to Fleming's little OCTOPUSSY. Yet actually - though I'm normally quite the stickler portending the sort of thing that involves literature being fathomed into film - when it comes to fathoming Commander Bond in any manner or depth, let me just say: I Do Not, Nor Have I Ever, Come Across Any Problem With Expanding upon the Liberties of Whim, nor even Elaboration~For there's no denying this 007 action flick presents all the optimal Moore-era Bond movie offerings in the full force of their stigma, and that's certainly something I care about: exotically beautiful locales, attractive leads, tense action, and dry cheeky humor. And though, evidently, there's something intangible that's lacking here, I cannot say I haven't immensely enjoyed this movie each time I've seen it over the years. An extremely valuable collector's item: a Faberge Easter Egg, is to be auctioned, "Property of a Lady," at Sotheby's shortly following the murder in Germany of Her British Majesty's Secret Service agent 009, who'd had the article d'art on his person when he was killed. It's correctly suspected that this collectible, of which there are more than one or two counterfeits roaming abroad, is being used to finance something severely counteractive to the well being of Her Majesty's realm. The "Lady" in question is a beautiful, albeit elusive, jewelry smuggler who happens to know a thing or two of Bond and the type of man he is. She's known as Octopussy (Maud Adams), but she's actually not to be seen for several scenes hence... So- in the eventful and intimate meanwhile, it's Magda (Kristina Wayborn), a member of the Octopussy Circus, who serves to stir Bond's romantic juices. While Wayborn is undeniably pretty, her aura is rather stiff and stoic in comparison to the ardent and colorful scenery (John Barry's musical score enhancing the atmosphere to a vividly lush pitch). Really, it is not until Octopussy, our aquatically exotic and mysteriously oblique adversary enters the picture, that the movie suffers itself to turn beautiful.By this time, James Bond's assignment has put him in quest of that swank little egg - and he's pitted against two very hearty villains: Kamal (Louis Jourdan) and General Orlov (Stephen Berkoff). They plan, with the aid of their dangerous henchmen: Gobinda (Kabir Bedi) and the evil twins (David Meyer and Tony Meyer) to set off a nuclear bomb on an American airbase in Germany. Bond's quest leads him through London, Germany, thence onward as far as Delhi, India: all settings being sufficiently aesthetic and atmospheric for the discriminating Bond aficionado. And if I sound ironic, it's indeed likely due to the convoluted aspects surrounding my own morose mind. The dilemna has only tentative factors to do with the (ornate as possible) elucidation of my praise for this movie. In other words: I like this film, but I cannot succinctly tell you why.......Overall, John Glenn's direction is very riveting, very scenic, very good; Moore's getting a bit old here for the role, and this really should have been his last appearance as Bond (but he came back oncemore, for A VIEW TO A KILL); the music herein is seamless and perfect; and, without doubt, the storyline and characterizations are very excellent. I really could go on and on and on.... but this time, I won't.This is Roger Moore's 6th outing as 007, and the 13th film overall in the series. The year was 1983 - which was, incidentally, the same year Sean Connery came back as Bond in the unofficial (non-EON-franchised) entry, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. For my part, I must allow that Moore upstages Connery, if only for this moment - and only for the sake of posterity: for, whether or not this was a most singular fluke of timing, or a concerted effort to bring James Bond blatantly into the scheme of box office intrigues, I'd already had the pleasure of the likes of NSNA with the earlier film, THUNDERBALL (yesss, but that's another story, for another day), so it all seemed more nostalgically symbolic than entertaining. Truly, in 1983, even though James Bond was looking a little too seasoned for the intense physical action demanded on the big screen, the active magnetism of the icon left no doubt as to his universal allure.

Good – but at times you think you are watching Indiana Jones rather than James Bond!

‘Octpussy' is a different Bond film. Bonds ‘golden' era of the 60's andperhaps the 70's were well and truly over. Now we were into the 80's – adecade with started well with the great ‘For Your Eyes Only (1981)' – andproducers were perhaps facing the uphill task of keeping audiencesinterested in Bond. Even more pressure was faced upon them when it was foundout that the original Bond (Sean Connery) was returning to the role to shoota rival, unofficial Bond film (‘Never say never again'). Moore's contracthad run out, and producers were quickly thinking of a new actor to play thepart. But then, with Sean's film to be shown at theatres at approximatelythe same time, Moore was re-hired as Bond, as producers did not want toomany actors playing Bond at the same time confusing audiences. Moore was tooold and wrinkled by then, but he does pass the test as being Bond with‘Octopussy' – he does shape up fairly well here – but its his last (A viewto a Kill) which was definitely one too many for the grandfather like figurerunning around and womanizing people who seemed to be his grandchildren. Apity, because in his 70's films, I felt Moore was a really goodBond!!If you watch ‘Indiana Jones and the temple of doom', you can expect prettymuch the same here, so it is pretty hard to compare ‘Octopussy' with theearlier Bond films. Why they called it ‘Octopussy' I don't know – as wedon't see the woman with the title name until the films latterhalf!‘Octopussy' does have the great Bond elements – the exotic locations, stuntwork, humor, action and gadgets. I found the effects fairly averagethough, as in the pre-credits sequence you can EASILY see a pole dragging alight plane which is supposed to be flying through a barn. But I guess itall adds to the fun of the film. All in all, ‘Octopussy' will keep you entertained. Its not one of the best, but its not one of the worst, either. The only thing that really annoyed mewas the ‘circus' theme towards the end with Bond dressed up as a clown. Thefirst half of the film, as in this case, is perhaps better. But there is afinal scene when Bond is fighting with his enemies on the wingtip of aflying plane which is pretty good, and the fight sequence on the rooftop ofa moving train is all right too.‘Octopussy' is a good Bond to watch if you are sick in bed and needentertainment to pass the hours away. There are better Bond films to watch, but ‘Octopussy' is fun in its own way.3/5.

Another really good one

I was asked today which JB is the best, I think I would say "Octopussy". Ithas a feeling to it that few other Bond films have, namely you can actuallysense the shortcomings of James Bond. Does he even have any? Well, have alook at his pained expression by the very end. Also, the tiny aircraft in the beginning does exist. It is the world'ssmallest jet aircraft, and had just been designed when they wrote thescript. Also, "Octopussy" has the very best beginning of all JB's...

Never really takes off and doesn't seem to know when to stop

"Octopussy", the sixth James Bond movie starring Roger Moore, of seven, unfortunately turned out to be another weak one. The Bond moviefranchise sadly took a great fall after "The Spy Who Loved Me" with"Moonraker", and then improved with "For Your Eyes Only", but not bymuch, in my opinion. After that came this film, which sadly turned outto be another step back for the franchise. More than once, I triedwatching this, but eventually gave up, feeling I wasn't in the mood, before finally watching the whole thing. I tried to get into it, butrarely succeeded.British agent 009 is fatally wounded during an undercover mission, disguised as a clown in East Berlin, and dies with a replica of apriceless Fabergé egg in his hand! Bond is soon told about themysterious murder, and informed that the real egg has just made it toan auction in London. This auction is where the British secret agent'smission begins, and he is to find out why 009 was murdered. Hewitnesses Kamal Kahn, an exiled Afghan prince, purchasing the item(though Bond has secretly switched it with the replica). His missionthen takes him to India, where Kahn's palace is located. In thiscountry, Bond meets a mysterious woman known as Octopussy who is closeto Kahn, and also finds that Kahn is working with Russian General Orlovto have a nuclear device go off on an American Air Force Base, leadingto World War III!This Bond film has some good parts, and I think that includes areasonable intro, and the scene where 009 is being chased in his clownsuit is definitely one that got me excited. More excitement followsafter that, but unfortunately, it's only occasional excitement. There'salso an occasional laugh, including some scenes involving Bond and Q(no surprise there), but not enough to make up for the lack ofexcitement. For the most part, I was pretty bored, and may not be ableto fully explain it. I just found that it never really takes off, andlags too much. It doesn't help that the film may seem longer than itis. To me, it seemed significantly longer than probably any previousinstallment in the Bond movie franchise, even though it appears it'snot! In other words, another problem I found with this film was that itreally doesn't seem to know when to stop. Sometimes, it almost getsfrustrating! Watching this movie wasn't the first time I've been bored by a JamesBond film overall, but this time, it may have been just slightly worsethan ever before for me! This clearly isn't the least popular film inthe franchise (it appears "Moonraker" and Roger Moore's last outing asBond, "A View to a Kill", have less appeal than this one), but thereare definitely much more popular ones as well, and I can see why thisisn't one of them. Moore was in some decent movies in the franchise, and I haven't forgotten the fact that he had his 81st birthday a coupledays ago, so I guess this is the best time I can find to say HappyBelated. Nonetheless, while I haven't seen most films the veteranBritish actor has appeared in, I know "Octopussy" is not one of thehighlights of his career.

It just goes way too far

Why did this movie have to turn out the way it did, why? It starts offgreat, with one of the best opening sequences of the franchise. Then itstays great for about another hour. Most of the movie, in fact, is great. But (SPOILER!) when James Bond is racing against the clock to stop a nuclearbomb from detonating and takes the time not only to dress up like a clown, but to put on all the lipstick, outlines and even a teardrop on his face,I'm sorry, that is just a little over the top for me. Could've had himwearing a clown suit and maybe even a little makeup, but it just went toofar. And then it doesn't get any better when a gang of back-flipping circus womentake down a fortress with no trouble whatsoever. It--it was just too MUCH! Ican deal with laser gun-shooting battles in space, and indestructiblehenchmen with steel teeth, and yes, to some extent, I can even deal with aninvisible car (no, wait, I can't deal with that; that was equally asstupid)...Anyway, the point is, there is a not-so-fine line betweensuspension of disbelief and outright stupidity, and this movie wallowed inthe latter.Maybe in a couple of years, a seventy-something Roger Moore can star in aremake of this called "Never Say Pussy Again."

The biggest, the best Bond ever!

Octopussy is the biggest and best Bond ever!Roger Moore is simply fantastic as 007.The action goes on forever. It feels like you are on one hell of arollercoaster ride!

Octopussy is a good movie

The story takes place in India. It is about a jewely smuggleing lady who ownes a circus. She has a friend who plans to blow up the US air base during the circus.

One of the best cold war films ever.

Octopussy is one of the best cold war films ever. It really goes into depthwith its main plot. Rogue communists are trying to take things into theirown hands being dissatisfied with the way the Kremlin is handling armscontrol talks. The plot is to have a nuclear bomb explode in West Berlinfrom an unknown source. The hope is that the Americans and the Germans willcall it a nuclear accident and that the already high calls for nucleardisarmament in Western Europe will lead to the dismantling of all nuclearweapons. This would give the Soviet advantage in conventional forces anopportunity to invade Western Europe. After you grasp all that you can just sit back and enjoy the film. MaudAdams does a great job claiming to know nothing about what her associatesare up to while maintaining a profitable smuggling business. I think thatRoger Moore did a great job in this film. The humor was actually good andnot corny. The East German circus twins definitely portrayed that toughcommunist loyalty well in this film. Octopussy is a film worth repeated viewing for both the action and the plotscheme.

Rather underrated Bond flick

By 1983, it didn't take a genius to figure out that Roger Moore wasnearing the end of his time as James Bond. But as "Octopussy"demonstrates, at fifty-five years old Moore was still as suave as ever.Referencing Ian Fleming's short story "Octopussy", the twelfth screenadventure of 007 is partially based on another of Fleming's tales, "TheProperty of a Lady", and is partially entirely new material. The storyinvolves James Bond investigating the death of agent 009, and theorigin of a Faberge Egg found with the body. The trail leads Bondacross India and Russia, and Bond eventually discovers a plan to begina third World War.The Bond adventures had been getting sillier and sillier ever since"The Man With the Golden Gun" in 1979 - the peak of the goofy crazebeing "Moonraker" - and in 1981 the producers opted to go back to amore serious Bond for "For Your Eyes Only". "Octopussy" has the moodjust about right - serious, but occasionally silly as well. Only oncedoes it go over the edge - when 007 releases a Tarzan scream in theIndian jungle. There's some good thrills in this film, directed by frequent Bonddirector John Glen. The best of which is probably the short, butgrabbing pre-title sequence, which involves 007 in a mini-plane toescape from an enemy base. There's another score by John Barry - whowas also reaching the end of his Bond adventures - which doesn't liveup to what we've come to expect from Barry. Louis Jordan makes a verynice, albeit ferret-faced villain, while Maud Adams returns to play thetitle character. All in all, I find "Octopussy" to be a good, quite entertaining, andrather underrated Bond adventure. Next up was Roger Moore's final (andnot a moment too soon) outing as Bond: "A View to a Kill".

A classic bond movie that has a touch of brown sugar.

A bond movie that is easily one of the best. Moore does an excellent job despite his age.

Yet another quality Bondmovie!

009 is fatally wounded in East-Berlin, but he still manages to go to theBritish embassy in the city, where he falls dead.He had a golden egg in his hand, which is worth a lot ofmoney. But the egg is a fake and the genuine one will be sold at anauction.Roger Moore as James Bond is sent in to investigate, and he soon tracks theegg down to Kamal Khan and a mysterious lady called Octopussy. Most of the movie takes place in the former West- and East-Germany, andIndia. The actionscenes are as always spectacular and well directed, andJames Bond has many jokes up his sleeve. An excellent Bond-movie!8,5/10

One-two punch...

Not since the initial release of 'Dr. No' and 'From Russia..' had twoBond films been back to back epic, never mind 007 epic. But following Roger Moore's best Bond vehicle in 'Eyes Only' came anear perfect follow-up on 'Octopussy'.Released to trail Sean Connery's 'Never Say Never Again' unofficialBond film for Warners, the two went head to head for bragging rights. As many figured Connery would win, Moore's film held it's own... andthough many will always have a differing opinion, the two films racedneck and neck to a photo finish... Moore, though, won the title byplaying a better storyline, even if Connery played a better Bond. With a better supporting cast than one had seen in a while, on thecoattails of 'Eyes Only', 'Octopussy' sported a mature and morememorable Maude Adams, Louis Jordan in a villainous turn, and a Q whoeasily branched out even further... with a title alone that beggedinterest.Moore's second best vehicle, he reaches Bond Epic for the secondstraight time.If only he had kept this his farewell Bond performance.

Bond #13: Clowns and toys

This is a particularly colourful adventure with its mostly Indianlocation. Kabir "Sandokan" Bedi appears as a killer, Maud Adamsreturns, Kristina Wayborn looks breathtaking, the versatile LouisJourdan is a villain with style ("you have a nasty habit ofsurviving"), and the story about a stolen duplicated Fabergé egg isinteresting. However, there are a too many silly things in between (theclowns, the Tarzan shout, or Bond hiding in a plastic crocodile), andfurthermore the part playing in East Germany is not really spectacularafter the Indian jungle. We have seen fights on trains and thecountdown of a bomb before. So, "Octopussy" is a movie with a certainnostalgia, charming entertainment, but the best times are gone, andthat's exactly what one could say about its competitor released alittle later, "Never Say Never Again" with Sean Connery.

Moore as Bond as Clown - perfect summary of Moore's Clownish Bond

I can't explain WHY I am watching this wretched excuse for a Bondflic on Spike TV tonight- I guess the pickin's ain't easy onThansgiving evening. When I first saw this Roger Moore Bond flic in theatre, and whenhe showed up in the clown makeup, I basically said to myself"Self! That's it! No more Moore!". Don't get me wrong- I am theworld's No. 1 fan of Moore as "The Saint" (and even as the BritishCousin in the "Maverick" TV series). And, to be even moreeven-handed- I really liked his 1st Bond- "To Live and Let Die".Why? He played it, for the most part- with an air of seriousness. After that, ugh. Bond turned silly doesn't work. Yes, I did plodthrough the total amount of Moore Bonds, and yes it's not all hisfault. When finally, after a seemingly long while, Bond turned up inthe 4th incarnation, Timothy Dalton (or is that the "5th"- if you are apurist and rate Barry Nelson as Bond One?). I was so impressed-a Bond of the Novels and early Connery- serious when it requiredit. (Imagine my delight when TD only got to do 2 films; Brosnan isOK- "Goldeneye" being the best of that Bond). If, for some reasonyou are reading these comments and are considering "Octopussy"for viewing, I recommend viewing any of the first 7 Connery andLazenby Bonds, or either of the two non-Moores mentionedabove.I prefer my Bond to stir me- not leave me shaken....

Roger Moore's penultimate 007 outing. 1983.

The movie is quite a disappointment after the increased standard of ForYourEyes Only only 2 years before in 1981.Roger Moore is showing his age! I think he may have been 55 in1983.The stunts and action sequences e.g. the acrostar mini jet, are excellentasis the photography by Alan Hume but the plot is disappointing andmixed. The film was in competition with a rival James Bond production of thetime,Never Say Never Again starring Sean Connery. The film has India as a main location as well as Berlin andGermany.Witness Roger Moore modelling a safari suit in the jungle scene and doingatarzan yell!Q adds some humour to the movie, especially in the action packed finalewiththe Octopussy girls. Gadgetry such as LCD TV wristwatches and acid pensareused in the movie. The Union Jack emblazed balloon that Bond and Q use adds some Britishnesstothe production. The things I do for England! The MI6 office team of M and Moneypenny are showing their age and the filmadds Miss. Penelope Smallbone to the cast as Moneypenny's assistant. Shewassadly no longer seen in the series! The theme song by Rita Coolidge of 'All Time High' is different to theusualBond themes and doesn't mention Octopussy in the lyrics atall.

Long in the tooth Moore having fun in Octopussy

1983 marked the year that two James Bond 007 were released. The unofficial Never Say Never Again, a Thunderball remake featuring Sean Connery, and the EON produced Octopussy. Roger Moore's sixth Bond movie is a step down from the grittier tone For Your Eyes Only in it's tongue and cheek approach.Going to India, Bond uncovers a smuggling operation involving Fabrage Eggs, a dead 00 agent, and a circus front operated by the title character (Maud Adams). This is to be Moore's Penultimate Bond film as the aging actor intended this to be his last movie, only to make one last appearance in A View To A Kill.

OCTO*****

At 56, Roger Moore again brings urgency and charm to his portrayal as 007 and this installment is very good. From an escape into his acro-star jet to the breath-taking climax on the wing of an airplane, OCTO***** is a great film and as for Roger Moore, he somewhat began to show his age.

David_Frames 2012-04-25 08:22:49

Now thats more like it!

After an experimental adventure in which Glen attempted to bore theaudience to new levels of excitement we have Octopussy, not justentertaining because it has the word 'pussy' in the title but enjoyablein many ways, particularly in its winning mix of cold-war schcainary, racial stereotyping and countdown to Armageddon plotting. After amemorable opening sequence in which Moore has a lucky escape from aback-projected missile, 009 gets the knife in East-Berlin dressedinappropriately as a clown and on the run from some very unpleasantcircus performers. He makes to the British embassy just in time to dropa fabresay (sorry about the spelling there) egg and so Bond is sent toinvestigate and, well you know the rest. Octopussy succeeds where theprevious Bond failed because it better balances the by-the-numbers plotwith more interesting characters, including a good turn from the blokethat tried to poison Columbo in the episode with the restaurant criticas the bit of nasty and a slightly more assured tone that isn't afraidto punctuate the odd serious moment with some well chosen punnery -'thank goodness for hard currency' etc... Also gone is Bill Conti whomade For Your Eyes Only a test for the ears as well as the eyes and inhis place its a big 'welcome back' to John Barry who does his usualsterling work, asking only in return that all Conti's synthesizers werecovered in walnut oil and destroyed before he got to the studio. Glenalso manages to pull off a genuine exciting climax with Bond executingsome dangerous driving against the clock to defuse that old standby, the ticking Neclear bomb. Enough fun and good moments to go around thenalthough there was a sign here that 'ol Roger was beginning to feel hisage a wee bit and that the series formula needed a bit of re-invigorateshakeup. It would get it but first there would be the small matter ofthe pop, fop and cop show that is View to a Kill...
