James Bond Adventure. A British spy-ship, the St. Georges, accidently hits a mine and sinks near a Warsaw Pact country. On aboard is ATAC, a communications device that could order Western subs to attack friendly areas. 007 is sent to recover the ATAC and the Russians, interested in getting ATAC, send a message to their local contact. Bonds investigations leads to Greece and he meets Melina Havelock, out for revenge, as the Contact has had her parents murdered. Bond also meets Aristotle Kristatos and Milos Colombo (known as The Dove) and evidence leads that one of them is the Russians Contact but both accuses the other. Melina and Bond sets out to recover the ATAC and not only goes up against the Contract but also against Bibi, a young ice-skater, who has a major crush on 007...
Movie Photos:
We have taken some photos of "007 For Your Eyes Only". They represent actual movie quality.
The Bond franchise entered the 1980's, after having a hard time in the70's. Despite great box office returns, and growing popularity, theyhad almost fallen completely away from the original concept of 007.Connery's last film was disappointing, bringing in campy humor thatwould follow through the decade. Roger Moore's first two Bond moviesseemed experimental, using humor and comic type scenes to captureentertainment. They hit the nail on the head with The spy who loved me,however was they hit the Hollywood space race with moonraker, which wascompletely out of line of a spy flick, using much humor, comic typehenchmen, over the top plan, and stereotypical bad guy. Finally, they took the franchise back to earth, with For Your EyesOnly, a no nonsense type movie. This one did not use any stupidcliché's seen in earlier movies, instead uses a believable storyline tocapture the entertainment. In this movie, Bond is sent to find a missing ATAC system that sunkaboard a British ship. He gets the help from Miss Havalock, who'sparents were murdered by a hit-man. Bond is to try to find who he wasworking for, leading to Kristatoes, who informed him that Columbo, aGreek smuggler, was the true man behind it. Bond soon learns Kristatoesis the smuggler, trying to get 007 to assassinate Columbo. He then getsthe help from the Bond girl and Columbo to recover the ATAC.What is best about this movie is how refreshing it is. The soundtrack, the overall fell of the movie is just great. I like how it deals with amore espionage type story, instead of another re-hashed, cartoon likestoryline that we have seen many times before. Moore, who many considerto be a low end Bond, delivers a great performance in this movie, finally getting his feel for the part. By the way, i eat my own poo pooall the time and it tastes great!
Moonraker really sank to the bottom of the Bond barrel. Fortunatly ForYour Eyes Only brought Bond back to reality and brought a breath offfresh air. The story is fairly simple and easy to understand, as Bontries to recover a British encryption device from the evil Kristastos(Julian Glover). The movie is not short of excitement and action, aseach sequence leads to another, with the best being the car chase andthe tense cliff climbing sequences. The characters are top notch. Topol really brings Columbo to life andyou really do believe in his character. Michael Gothard also plays oneof the more menacing Bond villains during Roger Moores stint as Bond.Silent throughout the film, really makes you think what he iswondering. The music, which is this time performed by Bill Conti. Although atfirst it may not seem to fit in well with the Bond series, the musicdoes actually go very well with the action happening, with a wonderfuldisco-type version of the 007 theme.I also feel that this is one of the more violent films of Moorestenure. The intensity and emotion is amazingly felt as Locque smashesinto Countess Lisl or killing of Locque by Bond in cold blood. This is one Bond film which is underestimated and should be viewed bynot just Bond fans, but also to any action fan.Bond will return in Octopussy
After MOONRAKER, my interest in the James bond series had suffered a majorblow. I actually was looking at several other films totakemy date to at the time, (senior year of high school then) where in thepastI never missed an opening night of Bond. As frustratedandannoying as I found Moonraker, I was joyfully relieved to see FOR YOUREYESONLY. This is, for my money, the best of the Roger Moore segment in Bondhistory.WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS WITHIN TEXTWhen the teaser kicks things off, I groaned "oh no," becauseitreally seems hokey and silly. Once Sheena Easton's title song fades, however, the movie starts taking shape. This one is not about worlddomination or blowing up a major city. It is a throwback to From Russiawith Love, with Bond on the trail of a crucial piece ofmilitarydefense hardware. There is a pleasant "Kerim Bey"-like alliance formedbetween Bond and "Colombo," (brilliantly played by Topol) a smuggler whoatfirst appears to be Bond's rival. Julian Glover portrays a subtle, yetevilenough heavy for this film and I have to admit there is a high schoolish"cuteness" to Lynn Holly Johnson as the skater who develops a crush onBond. Most refreshing of all, is that Bond actually DOES seem to be in some realdanger once again. This hadn't happened in several movies preceding it.Heis bashed around constantly, dangled from a cliff, cut on a coral reef, and chased down a ski slope by armedmotorcyclists. In the past, you would see him fall into the water and almost come out inafresh suit with blow-dried hair!! This is a refreshing throwback to theearly Connery days of Bond. This one is DEFINITELY a cutaboveMOONRAKER, which had me questioning whether the series shouldcontinue. The footage in some of one chase is the best I've ever seen anditappears that the crew was really determined to pull this one offandlay its predecessor to rest.If I were to find any weak points with this movie, it would be that thesoundtrack sounded silly back then and has become even more glaring whenviewed today. If I'm not mistaken, it's Bill Conti and not John Barryhandling that aspect for this film. That aside, this movie renewed myinterest in what I felt was a series that had said just about all it hadleft to say. For me, this one raised the bar and wasthe "GOLDFINGER" of the Roger Moore phase of 007. The last few RogerMooreones are pretty good, but I think he hit his peak in thisone. Here, he is comfortable and believable without looking so stiff. He stillappears young enough to be able to bed a twenty-something actress withoutlooking a bit perverted. By the time A VIEW TO A KILL hitthetheaters, this could not really be said. Even if you did NOT like theRogerMoore approach to Bond, you'll probably come away fairly satisfied withthismovie as an overall production.RATING 9 out of 10
It's all there - in a funny way - but it doesn't work.Blofeld is there from the outset, but this Blofeld is totallyuninteresting, and the vistas shown in the opening sequence are not exhilarating, notentertaining.Miss Moneypenny is still there - the original, Lois Maxwell - but JamesBondtossing his hat when he no longer wears one... Decide foryourself.John Barry is missing, but many of the others in the movie making team arepresent, yet the screenplay lacks focus and that magic touch which is thehallmark of the series. Moore is objectively no better, no worse than heusually is (which may say something about his so-called success in therole). In a short while Cubby will make an invitation to a member of the cast ofRemington Steele, get blocked out by its producers, and go with theerstwhile housewife of Vanessa Redgrave. The series is in a painful slump, and it will be years before it recovers.
If you ignore Moonraker (and who doesn't?), For Your Eyes Only representsthe pinnacle of Roger Moore's continuous climb. From "tragically crap" to"cheesy fun" to "strong and exciting" to (ignoring Moonraker) to this,Moore's reign has been a continual series of one-up-manship.This story is fun, funny, yet grounded in reality. There's plenty ofmoments for Bond to perform improbable escapes and heroic bends ofphysicalpossibility, but nothing too egregious. This movie, to me, does the bestjobof making Bon fantastical yet holding onto that core grain ofbelievabilitythat is so crucial to crafting a compelling character.I spotted just two flaws in the film. The villain, Kristatos (wonderfullyportrayed by Julian Glower... try to spot him in The Empire Strikes Back)isterribly undermotivated. The presence of the ice skating girl is totallyirrelevant to the plot. She should not have been in this movie, and shealso happens to be a terrible and annoying character. The strengths are numerous. It is so refreshing to NOT know the identityofthe villain right from the beginning. Even better, to be introduced tothevillain in such a casual, off-hand manner, is a wonderful touch.Throughoutthe history of the Bond film, there has been a tragic lack of plot twists, misdirections, or surprises. More of this, please, and be quick about it.Roger Moore is superb in this film, undoubtedly his best performance asBond. He's toned down the stupid quips quite a lot, he's a bit moreruthless, a bit more dangerous, and a bit more human. Fantastic. This is the best Bond film up to this point (with the possible exceptionofFrom Russia With Love, which I haven't seen recently enough to compare tothis).
The thing that made the movie for me as a kid was the intro- I wasalways a fan of continuity, whether in Bonds or comic books and getunreasonably childish when I see M Casino Royale disregard everythingthat came before. Sure the location didn't look great (why the hellwould Blofeld kidnap Bond from a lovely little rural churchyard to takehim to the isle of Dogs to kill him?) But it was Blofeld! And with agreat accent (ignoring Charles Gray's but what can you do?). What wasthe point about bribing Bond with a delicatessen, though? At least itreferred to a point in Bond's past which is usually ignored and yetcreated the man. That out of the way, where to start... Worst car chasescene of any Bond with the obligatory upside-down car being hitside-on. Why on earth the pursuers shoot at him from behind butconstantly insist on trying to ram his car of the road instead ofshooting his head off is beyond me. As usual with this period film, dayturns to night and vice-versa with alarming (ir)regularity. Malena seesparents shot to death from an aeroplane right in front of her and shesimply looks into the sky with a look as if to say she's thinking whatshe did with her car keys. And how does she have the resources to huntafter trained professionals throughout Europe, whether in Spain, Italyor Greece? And what is it with her crossbow?! Unbelievable escapes frompeople on motorised vehicles shooting machine-gun fire at prey etc. Asusual with Moore films, one can only shrug as he suddenly shoots up inthe air on skis and hits someone who happens to be, however improbably,in his trajectory. This happens twice or thrice i this film. Terriblelate 70s-style TV music; compare with the lush David Arnold score inthe latest film. Child nymphomaniac is casually introduced to Bond(looking exactly like everyone else in standard ski clothes) for 20seconds and so lusts after him that she finds out where he's staying, breaks into his room and jumps naked into his bed. And since when aresharks a threat in the Mediterranean??? If you're having mates over andthis is on the telly, you'll have a blast. But if you're one who justcame out of a theatre having seen Casino Royale, you'll be almost asdisillusioned as Homer when he saw Paint your Wagon.www.tracesofevil.blogspot.com
"For Your Eyes Only" should be for anyone's eyes, but doesn't have the staying power of earlier Bond films. This Roger Moore entry into the Bond canon provokes the most disagreement from fans, who consider it possibly Moore's finest outing as Bond, but consider the film to be surprisingly lackluster. A Cold War espionage tale (a nuclear launch device is being sought by the Russians), is cooked together with elements of "The Guns of Navarone"(to be supplied by a Greek magnate), is spiced with some exciting but physically impossible stunting (Bond outruns his enemies by making a wreck of the Winter Olympics), sprinkled with a fine powder of amazingly attractive women (what else?), and the viewer is left---not quite satisfied. Perhaps the main problem is the aging Moore, who, even at his best, could never exhibit the sophisticated dangerousness of Sean Connery. Has anyone ever noticed that only Moore, of all the Bonds, is blond? Unlike his predecessor (and his successors) Moore could never glower threateningly. He needs to do so, badly, in this film, if only to capture the Cold War grittiness of "From Russia With Love." Moore's inability to project deadliness is the curse of his Bond films, but "For Your Eyes Only" evens the score by assembling a fine cast, including Topol, as a friendly villain. Caroline Bouquet plays Melina Havelock, a crossbow-toting beauty with hair a la Crystal Gayle. Lynn-Holly Johnson plays a hyperhormonal teenage figure skater who is probably the only girl whom Bond ever sends home before daybreak...and too bad...and once again, too Roger Moore.
I'll go out on a limb and say that this is my favorite Bond movie ever - period. After the sci-fi fantasy feel of Moonraker, James Bond has been brought back down to Earth - so to speak - in an adventure that is upmost classic in all regards, and highly memorable to the very end. Roger Moore's much improved performance after Moonraker proves he can be ever much as Bond as Connery or the rest of them. Even the pre-credits scene gives Bond a chance to conclude some unfinished business from the days of SPECTRE. The first image we see is Bond standing above his wife's tombstone, and soon hostage aboard a helicopter piloted by remote by a man who looks like no other than Bond's old nemesis - Blofeld. He's even got the same white cat with him. But before the opening credits and theme begin, it would appear that Blofeld's end has finally come - especially since he never returns again in a Bond film. The plot is more down to Earth this time around too, and quite more realistic, pitting countries against one another instead of a super-villain attempting to take over the planet. There is however, a load of villains in the story, but all working for each other who in the end, have a connection to Russia. The plot revolves around an English system known as ATAC, which is top secret tracking controls. The ship carrying the ATAC system has gone down in the ocean, and various criminal minds hired by Russia are sent out to find the system, but along comes James Bond and a girl named Melina (who's parent's were murdered by these men) to find the system first. In addition to a well paced and written plot, the charcaters are certainly above average in this Bond film, both in performance and interest. As stated earlier, Roger Moore proves he can still be Bond and the Bond girl - Melina - is actually an intelligent Bond girl who shows she can have a great use in a Bond movie to get the job done. The villains, especially Kristatos and Eric Kriegler, both prove themselves as well. Kristatos - the main villain in the film - is intelligent and certainly has character. Kriegler is the KBG hitman, who gives Bond plenty of fights and chases throughout a variety of action scenes. The locations in For Your Eyes Only are also among some of the best. The films begins in Spain, and travels to the snow covered mountains in Northern Italy, followed by both land, underwater, and mountain locations in Greece. All the scenes are beautifully shot, including the action scenes that were filmed in these locations as well. The action is certainly non-stop in this film, and just about every type of action you can think of is in this movie from beginning to end. In addition to the numerous shootout and one on one fights, there is a car chase scene in Spain, plenty of ski chases on the slopes in Italy, underwater action, mountain climbing suspense, and a wonderfully shot scene of Bond and Melina being dragged through shallow water and coral reefs amongst the sharks. The list goes on. What joy it is to see that after some interesting (yet fun) films, Bond has returned to his roots - and with a silent bang. For Your Eyes Only doesn't have the ridiculous feel of Moonraker for sure, but quitely, this one snuck up, loaded with tons of action, great characters, loacations, and a well-written story that is a must own film period.Acting - 4.5Action - 5Characters - 5Story - 4.5Overall - 5
For Your Eyes Only was a slick, fast moving, witty Bond film. Roger Mooreonce again plays Bond, alongside Carole Bouquet. The action sequences arespectacular for the time, and the story is very engaging. This is RogerMoore at his best. Much better than Moore's previous Bond film"Moonraker".
Carole Bouquet is undoubtedly the classiest, most sensual Bond heroineever! But no sane person would ever comprehend her attraction to that oldgeezerRoger Moore...oh, that's where "suspension of disbelief" comes in. Justenjoy the scenery.
After MOONRAKER, Cubby Broccoli brought the series down to earth in FYEO -- a Bond remanicent of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. Roger Moore gives his toughest performance as 007 and gets put through the paces. Caroline Bouquet as Melinda, Topol as Columbo (a character in the Kerim Bey mold), Julian Glover (INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE) as Kristatos and Lynn Holly Johnson as a nymphet. Great action work (especially the wild "ride in the country" and the battle in Albania) interesting score by the late Bill Conti (ROCKY) and direction by former Bond editor and 2nd unit director John Glen. Based on the short stories "For You Eyes Only" and "Risico". This one harkens back to the classic Bonds and de-emphasis on gadgets and gimmicks.
This is clearly the best Moore version of James Bond. Moore finally takes his role seriously and behaves more like a real secret service agent than he did in his previous, mostly comical, turns as 007. I actually think this is Roger Moore's very best acting turn. Which also makes this is one of the very best Bond films. As usual the scenery is breathtaking, the colors vivid, and the ubiquitous, classic, and certainly cliched by now, ski chases, car chases and underwater encounters are extremely well-done. This film shows much better attention to detail than in any previous Bond film. It feels like everyone involved decided to give it their best and not just make a Bond movie but a good suspense drama. Which is why it's so enjoyable to watch. I guess the best clue that this movie will be different is the opening scene in which Bond gets the better of Blofeld once and for all in an exciting helicopter ride.Let's not forget the believable story that doesn't fall into the ridiculous "taking over the world" category. The characters are well-defined and they're not allowed to fall into the classic Keystone Kops buffoons we've so often seen in Bond films. Another welcome change is the absence of the farcical Bond stalker who pops up everywhere and fails time and again to get his man like the coyote in the Roadrunner cartoons. One of the few negatives is Carole Bouquet who, although certainly more than beautiful enough, is much too taciturn to make a compelling Bond girl looking to avenge the death of her parents at the hands of criminals. This role would have benefited from the presence of a more assertive actress. It would, of course, be possible to nitpick at this film but there are few bad things to say about this enjoyable outing. Check it out; it's watchable without even knowing who James Bond is.
MASTER PLAN: get a special device (the ATAC) to the Soviets. By thispoint in the Bond film series, one can see an odd pattern, in that theMoore Bonders either follow or parallel the Connery Bonders, in order:"Live and Let Die," Moore's first, parallels Connery's first, "Dr.No,"returning to the Caribbean locations and including a character namedQuarrel. "The Man With the Golden Gun" is similar to "From Russia WithLove," in that the plot is small scale, with hardly any gadgetry. "TheSpy Who Loved Me" is Moore's best, as grand as Connery's "Goldfinger,"with a similar megalomaniac villain. "Moonraker" followed the outerspace theme of "You Only Live Twice," with a huge budget. And now wehave "For Your Eyes Only," which follows up "On Her Majesty's SecretService" with the same ski chases & stunts, and the teaser begins withBond visiting his wife's grave-site - the wife who was killed in "OnHer Majesty's Secret Service." The teaser, where-in Bond has his finalencounter with Blofeld (also from the earlier film, but he's not named& his face is not shown here), ends on a very tongue-in-cheek note, butmost of the film after the credits is fairly serious in approach, withjust a few small silly unobtrusive jokes here and there. Sheena Eastonsings the title song; it's fairly well done, smooth, but unspectacular. This is probably Moore's 2nd-best Bonder after "The Spy Who Loved Me,"but one must keep in mind that most of Moore's Bond films were sub-par.This was John Glen's first directing job after editing several of theprevious Bonders; he'd return for the rest of Moore's run and bothDalton efforts. He brings a steady, assured hand to the proceedings, a'back-to-basics' approach after the excesses of "Moonraker." And, it'sprobably a bit too basic - quite professional, but there do not seem tobe any scenes which really stand out, as in a few of the betterBonders. M is 'on leave' here (actor Bernard Lee passed away aroundthis time), and Bond is raked over the coals by a couple other highranking Brits; Bond is barely tolerated in this one. Q has someextended scenes; there's a now-crude display of computer technologyinvolving an 'identigraph' which must have looked cool back then. Bondtravels to Greece to seek out a sunken ship and runs across a femmefatale (Bouquet) whose parents were killed by an assassin employed bythe main villain. The locale is nice and Glen stresses a lot of chasingon narrow roads and on the ski slopes (in Italy now). The villains, like everything else, are not very memorable, including a Nordicsuper-henchman, but the plot and suspense engage the viewer while thestory proceeds at a fairly good pace and you won't get too bored. Moorewas now in his early fifties and while his scenes with the mid-twentiesthirtyish Bouquet may still work with the more open-minded, the subplotof the teen actress Johnson wooing him will probably make most viewerscringe a bit - if they're not grinning and shaking their heads. Moorewas at his best when with the more mature Countess character andpushing bad guys off cliffs. He would return in "Octopussy." Roger Moore's second best Bond movie was also his most realistic. The film begins with Bond finally killing off arch-nemesis Blofeld, and then kicks its viewer into a tangled web of Russians, smugglers, and drug dealers. There are double-crosses abound and plenty of chase scenes. The movie also has a great Bond girl, Melina. "For Your Eyes Only" keeps to Bond standards and delivers a fun two hours that keeps the viewer entertained.
This was the first Bond movie I ever saw and it remains the best. Creators of the new movies should look to this movie for ideas on how to create suspense and intrigue to go along with all of the action. I like how you are kept guessing who the real villian is until very late in the movie. Sometimes, you don't need music to make a scene exciting, like when Bond pushes the car off the cliff. The underwater scenes were beautiful, and the mountain climb was amazing. I first saw this movie on HBO when I was ten, and maybe that is why I like it so much. It made a strong first impression.
For Your Eyes Only has some of the better action of the Bond films, butthere are so many other things wrong with it that it almost cancels out thequality action sequences. The opening sequence of the film, with the remotecontrolled helicopter and the villain in the wheelchair, is excellent, despite excessively cheesy one-liners (`I trust you had apleasant fright?'). The theme song for the film is awful, as is almostalways the case (except for The World Is Not Enough, which is one of theworst films of the series but had by far the best opening song). What youhave with For Your Eyes Only is a stereotypically god-awful 80s love song, and the soundtrack of the entire film consists of this 80s crap as well.I'mnot saying I don't realize this was made in the 80s, but this music is so`80s' that it's funny.(spoilers)One of the most noteworthy things about this film is that the action sceneswere either very well done overall or they were incredibly realistic. ForYour Eyes Only is one of the only Bond films with ski scenes that don'tonlyavoid coming off as plainly ridiculous, but that are actually very good. There is a particularly excellent scene involving Bond on skis beingpursuedby a motorcyclist that has a cool climax on a luge track. There was a goodscene with dune buggies, where one of the brief Bond girls in this filmsuffered a death that was disturbingly convincing. There is an excellentscene in which a Mercedes falls off a cliff, and as it lands on the rocksbelow, you can see the villain's body fall out the driver's side window.Thescene where the villains dragged Bond and Medena over the coral reefs, intending to make them bleed into the water, thus attracting the sharkswhich were meant to finish them off, was very good, and also involved oneofthe more intelligent escape scenes of the Bond series. There was excellenttension created by the rock-climbing scene near the end of the film - asBond scales a ridiculously tall cliff in order to gain access to aridiculously out-of-the-way hideout  particularly when there is a bad guyabove Bond, trying to cut him loose and cause him to fall to his horrible, bloody death below.Clearly, there is no shortage of satisfying action and fast paced scenes ofgood tension, but it seems that for every good scene in the film, there isapathetic discrepancy of some sort. In one of the chase scenes, Bond jumpsoff of a tall fence, using a pool umbrella as some sort of parachute. That'snot only unnecessary and far too lowbrow a stunt for a Bond film, it's alsojust dumb. And then in one of the car chase scenes, there is a car full ofvillains behind Bond who are firing at him like crazy, and then when theyare just beside him, they don't even shoot at him when he smugly nods atthem. I guess they were afraid that at such a close range, someone mightactually get hurt if they opened fire. And of course, what kind of a chasescene would that have been if at least one car of villains didn't winds upsitting neatly on top of a tree? I don't even think I have to mention howridiculous the indentogram was. During the cool skiing scene that Imentioned above, some poor guy gets a pie in the face for no apparentreason. After the excellent ski/motorcycle chase scene, the villain on themotorcycle, after having crashed badly enough so that the bike wasun-rideable, actually picks it up and shot-puts it at Bond. During therock-climbing scene near the end, Bond suffers a fall from the rocks thatwould have cut him in half in real life, or at least broken his back. Andnot only that, but he performs the superhuman feat of coming up with somemagical trick with his shoelaces that allows him to just climb right backupthe rope as though it was a ladder with rungs. However, despite all this trash, For Your Eyes Only did have one of thebetter stories for a Bond film. The effort to recover the infinitelyvaluable British encryption device known as ATAC is made much more complexby the character of the Bond girl (how's THAT for innovative!). Medena's(the Bond girl) parents have been killed by the people looking to recoverthe ATAC because her father has been assigned to search for it, and beingGreek, she intends to avenge them because as she says, `Greek women alwaysavenge their loved ones.' Unfortunately, if she avenges her loved ones toosoon, she'll kill Bond's only chance of finding out who is behind the wholeoperation. This is the kind of thing that you see in this film that is notvery common in other Bond films, and that makes a rare effort to put a newspin on this otherwise traditional plot.Oh, I don't want to forget the underwater scene where Bond gives Medenawhatis supposed to be a romantic look, but it's ruined by the fact that helookslike E.T. in a wetsuit. But the movie is still good (Moore still doesn'thave Connery's endless charm, though). The villains are very well presented(except for the fact that they all wear cute little birdies on theirchests), and the action sequences actually seem to have a little thoughtputinto them. There was a lot of crap, but there were also a lot of acceptableexcesses in this film, which is unusual. Usually when a Bond film goesoverboard, it goes WAY overboard. Roger Moore still screws up the Bondcharacter, but the film is still able to survive his strained performance.
This review is from: For Your Eyes Only (Special Edition) (DVD) FOR YOUR EYES ONLY is my favorite all time of all the James Bond Films. (Spy Who Loved Me is my second favorite.) It has everything I love in a Bond film;1 - My favorite Bond - Roger Moore2 - My favorite theme song: The title track For Yours Eyes Only by Sheena Easton.3 - My favorite chase sequences: Helicopter peril, countryside mountains, snow chasing....4 - The best of all the stories - I actually believed this relationship that bond inspires. In effect, this film and based on the stories of the original Ian Flemming novels, is the truest in its content and reliability for true "Secret Service" action. Roger Moore will always be the bond for me - playing closest to the novels in the sense the one eleiment that Roger brings to the character - is humor. The character is charming and has a great sense of humor if you read the books.Roger Moore gives his best performance along with Topal, this movies has energy and a lot of speed, drama and fun. The action, the exotic locals and the special effects along with the technology of the time are fantastic. It is actually one of the longer running ones as well. But you really can't tell the passage of time. This is a definite must in the James Bond Series and a must for Roger Moore fans. (8-25-02)
The only Bond movie with Roger Moore in it that is worth seeing. "Octopussy" is quite all right, but it doesn't don't come near this one. Moore is finally believable as a rougher 007 and the story makes sense this time, and keeps you puzzled for a while as well. I liked this Colombo chap, the Citroen 2CVv chase and Bill Conti's music, and Carole Bouquet is one of the best Bond girls ever. The only flaws are that awful, awful Lotus car and the parrot. See this film.
There wasn't much further 007 could go as far as sci-fi wizardry and fantastic characters after the cartoonish MOONRAKER that had seen James Bond propelled into space. What was called for was a `back to basics' approach that emphasized realism, exotic locations, less gadgetry, down to earth villains and a return to the ruthlessness that Roger Moore had exhibited in movies such as THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN and THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. What better way for the filmakers to return Bond to his roots than to tap into original Fleming source material. Taking characters and situations from not only the Fleming novel FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, but also the keel-hauling sequence from LIVE AND LET DIE writers Richard Maibaum and Michael G. Wilson wove together a complex and enticing cold war spy drama that included some of the staple setpieces underwater and on the slopes that had served the character so well in the past. As the late John Brosnan noted in his review of the movie this production is essentially one long chase, but in the one solitary tip of the hat to the fantastic plots of the previous two movies, here the stakes could not be higher. Those stakes are the fate of all the British nuclear missiles in the polaris fleet. Forget the kidnapping of a few nuclear warheads in previous movies, here the balance of nuclear brinksmanship is at risk and ultimately the fate of the world. This movie sports several of my favorite characters from the entire EON canon. Topol plays a brilliant, amiable Greek smuggler named Columbo and the good natured trust and friendship between him and Roger Moore's James Bond is clearly evident in every scene they share together. Noted British television actor Julian Glover plays Greek mercenary and chief villain Kristatos and I love the understated mannerisms and menace that literally oozes from every line. The movie also has one of the series most beautiful women with the appealing Carole Bouquet and this particular Bond fan had a huge crush on Lynn Holly Johnson who portrayed the chipper Bibi Dahl. Add these elements together and place it against the backdrop of the Italian Alps and the Adriatic and you have one of the best entries in the series.
The 3rd best Bond movie. Moore is good, so is the girl, the villain, Topol as Bond's ally, the locations, and the plot. The only thing bad about is that the henchmen leave a lot to be desired.
