Set in the "third century of the second calendar", and at least 700 years in the future, Blake's 7 follows the exploits of revolutionary Roj Blake as he leads his band of rebels against the forces of the totalitarian Terran Federation which rules the Earth and many of the planets of the galaxy. The composition of the titular "seven" changed frequently throughout the series - with Blake himself being written out after the second season. The initial group of six characters - Blake, Vila Restal, Olag Gan, Jenna Stannis, Kerr Avon and alien Cally - included Zen to make up the title. They capture supercomputer Orac at the end of the first series, but Gan is killed during the second series. Blake's 7 is a British science fiction television series produced by the BBC for its BBC1 channel. Created by Terry Nation, a prolific television writer best known for creating the popular Dalek monsters for the television series Doctor Who, it ran for four series between 1978 and 1981. It follows the exploits of a group of political renegades, led by freedom fighter Roj Blake, and was inspired by sources as diverse as The Dirty Dozen, Robin Hood, Brave New World, Star Trek, classic westerns and real-world political conflicts in South America and Israel. Popular from the time it was first broadcast, despite a TV budget inadequate for its intergalactic story, it remains well regarded[1] on account of its dystopian tone, moral ambiguity, strong characterisation and its memorable final episode. It has since inspired a comedy short and a series of audio-play prequels; a proper remake, either live-action or animated, has been rumoured for many years, though never reached fruition.

In 1979 Clive Sinclair, British inventor of the pocket calculator, frustrated by the lack of home investment in his project,the electric car, also opposes former assistant Chris Curry's belief that he can successfully market a micro-chip for a home computer. A parting of the ways sees Curry, in partnership with the Austrian Hermann Hauser and using whizz kid Cambridge students, set up his own, rival firm to Sinclair Radionics, Acorn. Acorn beat Sinclair to a lucrative contract supplying the BBC with machines for a computer series. From here on it is a battle for supremacy to gain the upper hand in the domestic market.
