In a theatre on Broadway, a group of friends remember the opening night from one year ago. On this night, the leading lady was apparently murdered. On this day, these people, all involved in the production, are brought back by the fiancee of this murder victim, a distinguished playwright, to read for parts in his new play. However, he believes she was murdered, and now wants to catch the killer.

Bud Davis is a country boy who moves to the city to visit his uncle. He starts hanging out at Gilley's, owned by Mickey Gilley himself. He takes a job at the refinery where his uncle works. He also meets Sissy, a cowgirl, and they fall in love and suddenly get married. And then their marriage is shattered when Bud sees Sissy allegedly seeing con man Wes, who teaches her how to ride the mechanical bull...and plans to rob Gilley's. When a bull-riding contest is announced, Bud decides to sign up. Can he win the contest and save his marriage to Sissy?

When Andy and Elizabeth buy a farm in Vermont, they can't imagine the trouble that awaits them. Louie is a New York slum landlord who is given 120 days to repair one of his apartment blocks. The problem for Louie is that he must live in the rundown block until the repairs are complete. Louie's father is the real boss, and he has no intention of paying for the repairs. This leaves Louie to live in the squaller his tenants endure all year round.
